Solomon King - This Beautiful Day Query

I don't know if I've put this on here before, but has anyone else on here got a Solomon King - This beautiful day on UK Columbia stock copy to compare with mine?

This is the third copy of this I have had and the other two before this, both had the 'A' side as 'Say a prayer'.
This one however has got 'Say a prayer for me' as the 'A'.
I was wondering if anyone had the same on theirs?
It is listed on the UK Columbia Discography as 'Say a prayer' as the 'A'

Yep Say A Prayer is definitely the A side.  This Beautiful Day is the A side of the Levi Jackson issue.

Pete, I think he's getting at the fact that this copy has ''Say a prayer for me" printed on it, and not just "Say a Prayer"

Oops sorry.  Yes that is unusual. The matrix number in the dead wax should tell you if it's a second pressing, probably say something like 7XCA 32660 A-1 or A-2

Pete, matrix number is '7xcA32660-1' on the Say a prayer for me side and '7xcA32660-0' on the This beautiful day side.
I didn't know that this was re-pressed. If it is a second press does it still make it an original copy?

When I say a second press, I just mean a second run, after the first lot has sold out, though I wouldn't have thought this sold more than a thousand copies but I don't really know.  It was never reissued as Solomon King so yours is the original, but it's unusual, I've had a dozen of these over the years and I think all were Say A Prayer.

Phew!! you put the willies up me then (to coin a phrase) :sweatingbullets: . I wonder how many many there is about with that title on the 'A'. Never seen another but there has to be more than one surely?

Also don't know if it will help at all, but opposite the stamped matrix, there is also stamped 'KT'??

 

That's just a stamper reference I think, it's either that or a tax code, you used to find them on the centrepieces of EMI label releases.

:hatsoff2: HI ALL   As Pete said 2nd or 3rd stands for the pressing runs for a record a reissue would be just that, Solomon King Columbia DB8676 has the matrix 7xca 32661-0 "say a prayer" & 7xca 32661-1  "this beautiful day" the matrix # is at 6o clock on EMI records, the KT is the tax code at 12 o clock, 7 at 3 o clock you have a letter that stands for the pressing run, 'G' is the very first run & you will find it on all DEMOS and blank test pressings, the next pressing run would have the letter 'R' these letters come from the word GRAMAPHONE & each new pressing run will have a new letter, so the third run would have the letter 'M' at the 3 o clock position.

Your record will be a late run, so check the letter to confirm, as it has a miss title, it would seem it is a withdrawn record as I have never seen one, the record was deleted and re promoted under the name of Levi Jackson, as far as rarefy I have always believed the Solomon King DEMO & the Levi Jackson issue to be worth the most, your record with a misspelt title would not make it worth more money in my opinion & some collectors might think it is worth less :g: DAVE

7XCA 32660-1' at 5 O'clock on the 'Say a prayer for me' side and '7XCA32661-1 at 11 O'clock on the 'This beautiful day' side.
 

The letters 'KT' are at 5 O'clock on the 'TBD' side, and at 10 O'clock on the 'SAPFM' side
At 7 o'clock there are 2 'Gs' together on the 'TBD' side,
and on the 'SAPFM' side at 2 O'clock there is the letter 'T'

:hatsoff2: HI ALL to right it's complicated, as I was comparing your info against my Demo, as I said G means the very first pressing you will see it on all of the EMI Demos, as for GG I really am confused, it may be a export record, but the record did get released in Europe so any thing I say is just a guess on my part, the best I can do is ask the 3 Amigos of UK SOUL, Mick Pete & Roy if not John Manship may know, you can always send a scan to RECORD COLLECTOR magazine as they have many UK pop collectors who love this sort of stuff, they always get back to you, sometimes they print your letter, :thumbsup: DAVE K

I have attached images of all of the letters that appear on both sides (indicated on each photo)
I have also attached the full labels of both sides so you can see that it is a British release copy.

While tidying up the record room I came across #1 of Dave McCadden's Soul Galore mag from 1996. He reviews TBD and mentions the a-side as being "say a prayer to me".

What I tried to say was that the copy he had for the review obviously stated "say a prayer for me" on the a-side.

I have written to 'Record collector' as suggested above by dthedrug, and I have included all of the markings and images.
Hopefully they will get back to me explaining the 'GG' and the 'T' markings as well as the title difference.
I will post back if they do.

I know, I'm back again, but the more I look at this record, the more it begs me to investigate why it is different.
Has anyone had any more info on this? I wrote to Record collector but they never got back to me, and no one I have shown it to has ever seen another.

The query is, why is the 'A' side title different? What do the (GG) stand for? as it should be a  single 'G'.
Why is it different to any other I have seen?

I just checked my demo for you - the pressing run letter is a single G at two o'clock, as is normal.

I thought they doubled up the letters like your 'GG' once they'd run out of the letters G R A M O P H L T D (ie after the tenth run), but that does seem highly unlikely in this case - it was hardly a million seller!  :g:

(And the A side is just "Say a Prayer" btw)

I picked one up a long time ago in a job lot and was told when I enquired to the seller, that it was deffo a boot and no reason to be on parlaphone, so am wondering if it is actually my old copy?

Not a boot I believe pressed by Federal records (West Indies) and contemporary to it's UK original release. 

 

Those Federal releases were made for the whole Caribean (and other isolated destinations) market so I'm guessing that a first run of 50/100 pressings to test the demand could be a probable number. They did a lot of very small runs of 45s that never met any demand. But when a certain tune got popular they repressed as many runs necessary to meet the demand while it is still there (weeks, months, years…) and that explains why some Jamaican presses are so rare no matter what condition and some others are not.

Most boots were done in the 70's when the scene was fresh and demand for vinyl was outstripping supply.

That's 40 yr + now !

I thought that the one on eBay that has just sold was a legit west Indian demo. I contacted the seller and offered him quite a bit for it (naughty I know) but he wasn't interested, and wanted to let it run. I think if he knew it was a boot he would have accepted a decent offer like mine. It did end up for quite a bit more than I offered him. The release is also catalogued on Discogs
