Does any of you veterans know what to expect when buying Soul Pack AA aka Northern Soul Connoisseurs Pack from Rare Soul Vinyl?

 

Northern Soul Connoisseurs Pack

 

Is the description genuine or the usual 'seller trying to get rid of a pile of junk?'. Not expecting any great rarities of course just wondering if it would be a good starting point for a young collector trying to build a collection of quality soul music.

Is that Anglo-American?  If so, it won't be junk.  It won't be rare stuff either just overstocks probably but I've had a few in the past and they were fine.

 Hi All Because every body is aware of the current prices of rare records today? (WHAT!) you will not find the big newbie these days, but if you buy from a reputable dealer as Pete said or SOUL BOWL you will get some quality items, that I'm sure you will value far more than the price paid, Plus they are great fun,

I love how everyone talks about how dealers know the price of everything nowadays, like when they were making up soul packs in the 70s, they didn't have a clue and were right royally arsing up by putting Purple Mundi's and rare funk 45s etc in there. Back then, soul packs were stuffed full of the crud nobody wanted, too.

 

I'm sure a soul pack bought now will throw up a few gems a decade down the line, as people start getting more into 80s stuff and future genres like "three step" and "power ballads" come to the fore...

As mentioned not expecting rarities in such packs, just hoping for nice low to mid range titles to enjoy. I'm pretty young still and a total novice anyway

Before buying a soul pack ( that I'm sure will be good) have a little search on here for the threads about  cheap soul records £5, £10 records, Some amazing stuff!  Lots of sound clips, and many easily available on e.bay or by posting a want on here. Enjoy your search, and good luck........Rob

Thats what I'm afraid of actually. Obscure or not, i don't want late 70s or 80s titles. Especially not when buying a pack titled Northern Soul Connoisseurs Pack. I would expect the majority to be 60s which is what i love the most. Only bought one pack before that got described to be Northern and it was full of things like Brass Construction, Brothers Johnson and some Grace Jones even . Than again i also hope its not all Northern either as i like a lot of crossover and R&B too. The Anglo-American pack attracts me because of the description...  STOMPERS, SIXTIES, MODERN, R&B ETC ETC. have no idea what to expect hence my plea for advice from you guys whom i consider to be true connoisseurs.

Thanks Rob i heart your advice. Thing is i'm in Belgium and postage adds up to the cheapies when bought seperately. In comes my interest to buy a soul pack from a reputable dealer in hopes to get score some of those records you mention. I'm a poor student and £300 is a lot of money for me. Just love those 45s so much... 

Go for it mate , what you don't like try and sell . you should at least get your money back and have some tunes you like

Hmmmm.i don't know what the postage to you would be my friend...but if you put up a list of multiple buys, you could buy a lot of tunes for £300....the guys on here would know without a doubt...keep your options open as if you get a pack and your not keen on 30% of them there not such a good deal....better to cherry pick 10 you really like, get them, and have a think about what you do next when you have saved a few more pounds....don't rush buy, you have years to collect!......take care mr oomph.....Rob

If it helps, here's a sample of what I've had from Anglo's Modern Soul Packs a few years ago.

I don't think any are "rare" but they all have some quality to them and the condition was generaly Ex.

Do soulbowl still do soul packs ? I bought several in the late 70's... wish I'd bought 100's !!! Dickie Wonder Eddie Billups to name but 2 gems I was lucky to get ! 

They're £3 each if you like a third of them you're better off than buying 30 off here at £10.  You'll find stuff that you'll never be able to play out.  Doesn't make it bad just not right for most venues.

I'd be surprised if you looked up the 'book' value if there's less than £900 quids worth.

My last one was over a grands worth by the latest price guide (though I doubt I'd get a grand in real life obviously)

You'll find stuff that you'll never be able to play out.  Doesn't make it bad just not right for most venues.

 

And there's the rub. There's a perception these days that anyone wanting to collect will also want to DJ eventually...

tim's soulpacks are very good,at the mill just recently....having sold a pack a week prior, we walked in as he was hurriedly making up another for the same customer...that's £600 in a week!...of course there's no guarantee there won't be duplicates, but it's the essence of not knowing exactly what's going to be in there that intrigues people....he definitely wouldn't fill them full of junk..tim stakes his reputation on honesty and quality. blues and soul mag used to advertise soul packs in the 70's..and people used to buy those even then....because "you never know what you're gonna get"...threw up a few bunny sigler's "girl don't make me wait" when nobody wanted to know it...until it went stellar at the casino...i suspect you will not be throwing £300 away with this offer though.

 Hi ALL  Looking back at soul packs that I got in the 7ts from Contempo in Hannaway Street, they were excellent at the time when records were very expensive to buy, most of us seem to forget this fact,  in my first pack I got  "fire" Ko Ko Taylor, "just like a yo yo" Ruby Winters at the time still being played at the WHEEL.

the soul packs from contempo in the 70s were 10 for a £1 . thats 10pence each! then they had to be packed adressed and posted. how did they do it? and what must they have paid for these records that had to be shipped all the way from america. i had a few back in the day nothing rare joe simon on sound stage 7 mad lads , emotions ,major lance on volt, dells on cadet,continental 4 jaywalking , five stairsteps cutom, some king releases. They were great records for a 16yr old who had only heard a bit of motown and top of the pop soul at the local disco. Really its what started me off on the journey and over 40yrs  and 7000 records later still buying.
