Hi All

Was with Gary Samways at the Llandudno weekender. He has posted this evening on Facebook that he has got back home to Swindon and he has been burgled. His entire collection (about 3,000 records) built up over 35+ on the scene is the only thing that has been pinched; as such, he surmises that it must be someone who knows him, knows about his collection and has some idea what to do with it.

He is still getting his head around all this. The Police have been there and apparently been as helpful as they can be.

Needless to say, our thoughts are with the guy.

Any ideas, info, etc gratefully received. Feel free to message me at this stage if you have any info about a collection being offered, sudden items coming up from someone who perhaps you would not expect (some rare items in there - Gary has never sold a thing in his 35+ years of collecting), or any whispers you might have heard. I will pass on to Gary. Or, if you know Gary (I am sure many on here do), feel free to contact him direct on here or via FB. Please keep it to hard facts and info rather than general tips and advice.

Thanks.

Melba Moore is a hard number to pick up. No one will be able to sell two copies now you have flagged this up. And a word to the trembling scumbag who may be reading this (if you can read), do the decent thing and return the records as fast as you can and avoid a custodial sentence, more offences on your criminal record and the vendetta (look it up - it's not a type of scooter) heading your way.

Hiscox Vinyl Collectors Scheme (number available on request)

Sickened by this Gary, I've just been reading over the page some of the records that are missing and my breakfast is churning. I want to form a posse of a couple of thousand of us roaming the country for your records and get them back to you tonight in pristine nick. Some fecker knows something.

Anyway, since posting the above early yesterday afternoon, I have had quite a few requests for Hiscox number. So for any that are interested - 0845 072 8535 ask for a proposal form for the vinyl collectors scheme.

So sad to read this and haven't seen it on FB. I wish I had something in my collection to give you, but from the previous post, I couldn't come close with the calibre of your stolen items. :(

A real violation of your whole life. Your memories, not just your collection.

3,000 records or there about is a lot of weight/bulk to shift for someone (I’d say could well be more than one person?) especially when in a hurry to get in and out quick without causing suspicion or alerting neighbours, passersby etc. Stating the obvious I know, but they would need a car also to get away from the house. By the sound of it you need to go through your FB list of friends and see if there are any characters there that could be involved and also know where you live, know you have a collection worth taking the risk for etc.

Was the whole lot in boxes/record boxes or on shelves as may also confirm likelihood of more than one person to get that lot out and away as that’s got to be a good few trips if just one person from the house to their car and back in the house for the next lot. Are the records in plain white card sleeves or do you label them up or use coloured sleeves.

Hope you get some luck in finding out some more — just need one or two records to turn up for sale that you know are definitely yours (markings, label writing etc.) to be able to trace it back.

really sorry to read about this,i hope u find yr records and nail the thieving scumbags !

Anyone who knows the value of the records and therefore this scene, will already know that it will be difficult to sell these on without suspicions being aroused.

The thieves have stole these for own gain I would say, so if anyone notices a DJ(/s) who have suddenly got a lot of 'new tackle' in their sets it should raise some eyebrows.

If you haven't already done so Gary, I'd send the list as you can remember to every dealer you can think of. Also, any second hand record shops in a 10-15 mile radius. I hope the vinyl Gods are looking down on you and you get them back and also lose some hands in the process of the scrotes that nicked them

A very nasty business altogether. I personally believe that who ever has done this knows you Gary. Not nice to think about I know but it's just too specific a crime to be anything else in my view. Records are viewed as worthless junk to the wider public I think so it has to be someone who knows what they are and who you are and what you had record wise.....

They are too bulky and awkward for any normal thief to even contemplate taking. Why not just take the telly instead ? It's easier to flog ! No ones gonna buy them but unsuspecting Soulfans.

I really feel for you Gary, just hope you get them back soon. Let as many people as you can know about it.... They'll surface sooner or later and I just hope the culprits are caught.....

If they are, do let us all know won't you.

Good luck mate,

Best, Ivor

So do I Ivor and I'll wager most that have read this sad thread think the same. I'm wondering if the person or persons who stole them are reading this thread?

That is was saddens me nearly as much as Gary losing his lifetime's collection. This scene is made up of people that care about each other, that want to help each other out and you know and knew that Mr Thief. This is not the act of a friend and don't think of trying to out these records in other countries in time, the Soul Police are internationally ubiquitous and omnipresent.

A 'Find Gary's Stolen Records' facebook group can unite and alert everyone who knows this music to be watchful. There is no end to the detail that can be posted about these records, so that's you fooked mate! Give them back and do it now. Stash them somewhere safe if you have to and call the old bill anonymously and let them know. Be a good egg and leave Gary's address (which you're familiar with) with the records.

Wonder if some reward money might help get these back?

Unless your loaded Gary I can chip a ten or a twenty. If some other kind souls did similar it may help. If they never turned up and you used the reward money to buy back some faves, that would be better than the current unimaginable miz?

Hi Gary, sorry to hear this.  while ago Posted about 3 being taken from my collection from my house by one of my close close friends in the time span that they were taken I can get it down to 8 friends being in my house at various times. But still don't know who it was.  Lisa doesn't want anyone round the house again. It still upsets me as whoever took them I regarded such a close friend I would have seen them ok with a lend of the £3 or 4 hundred quid that they  were worth. Hope you get lucky bro and they get a good battering they don't deserve being pissed on if they were on fire. It does take a lot out of the scene that has been  inside your heart for a lot of years. Regards kimbo

nice idea simsy but I suspect they are tucked away somewhere for now, whoever had them will probably sit on them for a while then drip them out

I'm happy to donate reward money too...

Anything I can do Gary, just PM me....

Lots of practical insight here. If the records were in white 200 boxes, that's 15 trips to the car/van. Was the vehicle parked in the road or on a drive? Someone down your road must have noticed the vehicle. Do any of the local houses or shops have CCTV? If you can access the pictures, you may recognise a vehicle or even a number plate, probably of someone you know, who lives in the local area, and much as I hate to say it, someone who frequents soul venues, knows the music and is totally unscrupulous, reckless and a danger to all record collectors.

Yes, & I noticed recently someone who got caught thieving records some years ago, at least 10, maybe 15 years ago, was DJing some where recently....disgusting, shouldnt even be allowed in a venue IMHO....I know its a long time ago & yes you could argue forgive & forget, but an open apology on here maybe would have gone some way to understanding, on the assumption said person is repentant....
