Black Knight - last I spoke to Gary many years ago and seem to remember he was diagnosed with something but can't recall what - cancer/MS?

Ivor Allen - used to attend Allanton and took up half the bloody record bar

A N Other - cant recall this one but he dealt mainly in Japanese LP's - P vine etc.

Boogaloo Records - Leicester etc.

Yeah, l picked up his stock in a hire van for Tim. 

I am sure it was a bit earlier than that, it was a bit of a nightmare getting back to Tod.

The f*cking thing would not go into 1st gear, John Atkinson came with me that day.

Didn't realise this was same guy - used to like his lists - remember buying Alex Brown on Sundi off his list in around 1988/89 - think it was £30

Garry at Black Grape sold his stock back to the US to Craig Moerer / RecordsbyMail

 

Gary at Black Knight sold his stock to Tim Brown at Anglo American.

 

Both top draw fellas, still loving the music and still around.

 

Had a long chat with Gary (Black Knight) only a few weeks ago at Clifton Hall revival.

 

Glad to say he was looking very well.

Last time i saw Ivor Allen he was driving his old volvo estate, he had that many crates of records loaded in the back that the exhaust pipe was scraping on the road, he was still living in the same area and dealing then, but if you wanted to visit his house you had to spend well, otherwise it wasnt worth him going into the attic to sift thru his crates and humping stuff down,..he dint mind back in the 70s, but dont blame him now we,re all getting on, a great fella and very knowledgable and he can chat abit too,,lol

I have no idea what was in the stock, it was all boxed up.

I think Rick and John went through it, the days after l dropped it off.

 

I did spend a lot of time going through the stuff that came over from Martin Koppel a few years earlier.

A bloody big container load it took 4 of us about 6 hours to unload it.

I seem to remember Cliff & Trev from Northampton buying stock and having the back of an escort filled(that being an understatement). I thought it was a dealer from thr south was that black grape also. Long time ago tho. atb Kimbo

Was it mike ward who sold a few p.vine and japanese things, I remember a guy down in colchester or that neck of the woods who also had that stuff. . Mike  had some good 45s also. Like that morris 45 'cant we melt the ice', which never turned up in any quantity.

Shortly afterwards Gary sold up and I still have that sleeveless LP!! I always loved the £5 recommendations on the front........ Curt Darin, Second Re$$urection and loads more that I can't think of now.

Was it mike ward who sold a few p.vine and japanese things, I remember a guy down in colchester or that neck of the woods who also had that stuff. . Mike  had some good 45s also. Like that morris 45 'cant we melt the ice', which never turned up in any quantity.

I think the guy you are both thinking of from Colchester way was Dave Porter who ran Spin-Off Distribution. He used to specialise in  mainly Japanese releases…..Also Southern/Deep Soul was his thing. Used to do sporadic lists of 45s as well alongside the regular current releases available at the time … great bloke. The Jap stuff was extremely difficult to source back in pre internet days….

Cheers you two. The last I heard, Dave was a taxi driver in New York. I seem to recall buying some bits off eBay from him, but that was some time ago.

remember buying the Tommy Tate Malaco LP plus quite a few other new jap releases at the time also

god I really do miss getting "lists" from people like that and loads of others

like me, I'm sure we all had a few people that were dealers in general soul but weren't active on the northern scene - always managed to keep them from the masses!!

i vote to ban vinyl sales from the internet and we all go boy back to getting lists through the door

i kind of miss those Wednesday mornings hitting redial on the phone to get through to soul bowl - only to be told that what you were after was gone! - then scouring the list again and finding something else later in the day that was still available - off to get my dad to write a cheque or a good old postal order sent to kings Lynn - no PayPal in those days

i remember when I was doing the all nighters at Allanton, I got a phone call from him

i had never heard of him and honestly thought it was a "wind up" due to his strong accent - don't recall exactly where he was from

he informed me that he was coming up to scotland to the all nighter and gave me more or less the exact time he would arrive in order to get set up

told me what kind of floor slace he neede for tables etc. AND most importantly always told me "ALL ME RECORDS ARE BRAND NEW JIM - I DONT SELL ANY SECOND HAND RECORDS"

i honestly thought it was one of my mate winding me up

But, almost bang on time there he was waiting at the hall - loaded with bloody records

quite a character indeed he was !!!

Ref ivor allen-great bloke.I had the pleasure of working with him at my employers in Bradford-he was an agency driver there and left about two years ago.He pops in to work every now and again and  has a chat. Still drives a Volvo estate-I think he is a Volvo enthusiast and allways seemed to have spare parts in his estate car.One of those guys who would help you out and he never seems to age-still got the same haircut he had twenty years ago and usually has a big grin on his face!And before anyone asks he doesn't have any records left but I am sure he could sell you a gear box for a 1980s Volvo estate!!!!!!!!!!!

Currently residing in New Jersey. My designer Jaffa has an apartment in the same block as Dave, so he sees him pretty regularly. He's still selling records.
