Only three known copys exsist ! Now here's the heads up on it...

I've had my copy for around twenty year always knew it was something special and a thing of beauty besides being a choice soul record. So recently and over the past year or so posted photo on FB always liked by some of the serious collectors/dj's alike and had quite a few snapping at my heals to sell them it,imeadiatly dismissed not for sale !

Now then just this week i decided to investigate the said 45.

So now it was up to me to track down aussie  collector Frank Driscoll and see what else i can uncover, tuck me 2 mins in all and i was chatting.....

Me - Hi Frank,Just wondering about the heads up on the Garland Green - Angel Baby 45, Just read up Anoraks Corner Exactly how rare is it. Sorry about poor pic quality just a snap with the phone can scan it at a later date if require.
Thanks in advance

Frank - It's a rare record, yours is only the third copy I know of 100% to exist, I'm sure there are more but not too many. It's very hard to put a value on though, get a couple of Aussie label collectors after it and it could fly. It was pressed in Clayton, a Melbourne suburb, by Astor. The thing with Aussie releases is a lot of them are dog rare, it wasn't a country where soul was either played or bought much from what I can work out anyway. Rumour has it that every Friday afternoon the plastic recyclers would call into Astor and clear the shelves of dead stock which was of course melted down! I've been collecting Aussie 45's since 1980 and there are still quite a few I know were released but have never seen so there are plenty of very rare releases.

Me - Wow mate that story sounds a bit Frank Wilson to me its almost identical.

So Soulfolk history in the making with this very rare 45 and with only three copys known too exsist 100%, Be intresting to see what you think and what its really worth never mind top dealers offering peanuts or guessing what it will sell for, i put it to you what would YOU be prepered to offer too own this Holy grail "Angel"

Stevie (Mantis)

In all honesty how many of you even knew it exsisted ?

I'm sorry am I missing the point. It's just a rare foreign issue of a common U.S. 45. Stunning it maybe as a song, but you can buy it today on the web for £25 from many buyers on U.S. Uni. Steve is ri

The curiosity value of the record was certainly interesting enough, if you're into that sort of thing. What I found bizarre was the descent into abuse between the thread starter and the Aussie label collecting punter who wanted to buy it, amongst other things.

Hope that clarifies folks. Back to your on-topic musings!!

Done and dusted now, I still have the great 45,and glad to share it and the story [not sneakly keep it too myself in private}  and yes find out what its worth would be rude not too, everyone doe's at some point.

some people do like rare original formats..i certainly think you`d get £100 for it..the fact that the orig usa 45 is cheap maybe would keep it down in price

Dave's hit in bang on. I'd have thought most long term collectors have also got 'collections within collections' and that's something that also adds to the FUN element that Dave referred to. Within todays collecting scene with almost everyone in it for 'DJing purposes', sometimes it's forgotten that it's meant to be fun!

I was once asked 'Why would you buy 45s that you don't particularly like', my answer was exactly that... cos it's fun trying to build up labels, or find all the cardboard discs, or the Motown Little LPs or the Philco 5 inchers, etc etc.

I have records from as diverse locations as India, Taiwan, Israel, Yugoslavia and just about all points in between. Are some of them worth out? Who cares..... they look great when you dig em out.  AND... the hunt never stops, it's organic, now THAT's what you call a hobby! ;-)

Regards,

Dave

Great comments plain and simple Thanks Dave

Great comments plain and simple and like i said above its a thing of baeuty,,, Thanks Dave

Well I think you should sell it to me, Stevie - for £100 (plus p&p).

BUT..

With the guarantee of 'peace of mind', due to the fact I would be making the purchase solely on behalf of my lovely wife - who rates Mr Green as one of her all time fave artists, and who NEVER unloads her vinyl delights (not by choice at least), purely based on the fact that each and every disc she owns has special memories attached - people, places, times, events, etc. For her to unload any  of her vinyl pieces would be tantamount to sacrilege in her eyes, a massive injustice to her own beliefs, and a total disrespect to those aforementioned memories/reasons for treasuring an item in the first place!

So a home where it would be treasured - just as if it were a child delivered through birth.. A home where it would be revered for an eternity (at least).. A home where it would be guarded more closely than even the Crown Jewels..  What better home could there possibly be?

The knowledge that you have entrusted the safety and future of this iconic piece to a caretaker of my wife's ethos and pedigree is something you simply cannot equate in terms of monetary value.. Priceless !!

So, Stevie...

Is that a deal then?

Stevie, Mate..

Me - personally, would happily offer you the £1k (huh, it's only money, eh?) - a lifetime of just looking at it would more than recompense any outlay of that magnitude. But - alas... NAY!   Unfortunately, the miserly excuse for a housekeeping budget allowed my Good Lady  severely restricts her single item spending power (lest she amass a better collection than I..)- with purchases limited by the figure beggingly previously quoted   :shades:

Wtf? Private conversation?!! Don't you dare paste my private conversations from Facebook over the net, take it down Steve pls..

Malcolm

Sorry should have asked first but we were only discusing  the story of a 45 and you trying to buy it from me not planing anything ilegal ?

Well it’s only taken 9 years since this thread was started, and 20 years since I became aware of this 45 on Aussie MCA, but I just got a copy!

Will sit next too Garland’s two other MCA 45s a treat, and enhance my chin stroking technique no end!

And this was a wired thread !

Don’t know the tune, aussie only 45? Any other variants?

trust me, you must know it. Easy on US, Uk etc, but dead hard on Aussie, as said above, 3/4 copies back in 2015, I have seen one other for sale in 20 years since I knew about the release, the chap above had that.  Looks like I got a bit arsy in 2015...happens...

I get it, most folks who don't collect variants and different territories, won’t be amazed by this, I don’t collect British, would not know where to start, but the Oz and NZ stuff is obscure some of it. I'm sure I will probably end up selling this for less then I paid, but then that’s record collecting isn’t it...

Sorry just been on YouTube, decent tune, and I guess uni is the USA 45?

I remember "Angel Baby" by Garland Green getting plays at the Highland Room, at the Blackpool Mecca in the mid 70's.

Always thought the flip "You Played On A Player" a great record as well.

I don't collect Australian records, but they do look good!

That determination to own a record you are aware of and want for a long time is something that must happen to us all.  I know I’m guilty of it and have also then sold the items once I’ve owned them a while.

I’ve never thought about where all the classic Garland Green UNI tracks might have been played.

that's really interesting, by the time I heard them they were compilation tracks, and not really rare enough to be played out… I’ve missed out there.. that happens doesn’t it, second, third, forth time around, new to some, old hat to many….
