Happy New Year to one and all. A new year means a new beginning, so here is what is now the 10th Soul Source photography thread.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed over the years, whether by posting up pics, commenting on them, or simply liking them.

My first contribution is a short iPhone slo-mo vid of some fireworks as seen from our balcony as 2021 departed and 2022 began.

Here's to a great year ahead!

More excellent pics from everyday folk north of the UK border courtesy of the BBC News website's weekly collection of "Your Pictures of Scotland" (31 December - 7 January 2020).

The top pick from the selection (for me) is this one. I love the golden light and it just says "Scotland":

This week's BBC News "Your pictures of Scotland" offers a great selection of photos taken by readers. I particularly liked this sunrise.

It's a bit dull and grey over here for going out with the camera, but hopefully that'll change soon.

Not my photo but I saw this on a fb  group. Fantastic clear views from the Old Man of Coniston in the lakes, to Snowdon earlier this week where the conditions high up were superb.

I'm guessing that with the continuously poor weather, people here haven't had much in the way of chances for photo opportunities. That's certainly the case here in NL where it seems to be never-ending blustery winds, rain and grey skies. It doesn't look like that's going to change for the next week or so, which is a real shame. I can't wait to get back out again.

In the meantime, "Your pictures of Scotland: 28 January - 4 February", courtesy of the BBC News website, provides some inspiration.

Lots of great pics, and I particularly like this one of a swan in flight. I would have been well happy if I'd taken that myself.

I've lived up in Yorkshire since I was 4 yrs old. But was born in Penllyn, which is a small village near Cowbridge. Still got some family down there and always make a point of getting to Oggmore and Southerndown when we visit. Six Nations is always a time of mixed feelings as well.

Are you from round there Ed?

Sorry..just saw this...

No, I'm a Donny Lad:) but my Father's side lived at Ogmore Vale, so every year up to being 14 it was a couple of family holidays in that area.

Porthcawl being the jewel in the crown!

Ed

I have yet to venture out with the big lens this year, been a lot going on, work, wife trying to get me to fit out my man cave with wardrobes, plus visiting kids and grandchildren.

The view from Thursday afternoon's sunny bier session at a nearby lakeside bar/restaurant with a local expat chum who's also into Northern.

First time out on the bike for me since Oct/Nov, so although it was only a 5-mile round trip, I did struggle a bit. Mind you, the Laphroaig we had to round off the afternoon, and generously poured large by the bar owner, probably contributed to the trip back being somewhat slower than the outbound leg.

Must admit I did use the glorious sunset, seen about halfway on my return journey, as an excuse for a quick stop.

Well it was one extreme to another for me today , was trying to get a few shots of a less than cooperative Red Kite in the garden when I spotted this little chap just five feet away in a conifer , a much more obliging fellow who paid not a blind bit of notice of me as I took a few snaps as he was munching away ...

First time out with the camera this year, and first time out with a gadget I got for Xmas and which I'd been looking forward to trying - a 2x lens extender. This doubles the range of my Nikkor 55-300mm lens to 110-600mm.

Must admit to being a tad disappointed. It didn't help that the light was intermittent, going from sunny to cloudy and back again continually - the longer the lens the more light you need, and the day just wasn't really bright enough.

Also, I'd read that lens extenders reduce your aperture by about two stops. However, in reality I found it halved it, so the maximum apertures of the lens - f4.5-5.6 - is now f9-11. The only time that's going to work is on really bright sunny days.

Even at ISO 800, the fastest shutter speed I could get was 1/800th of a second at max focal length, which isn't fast enough for hand-held use - especially when in my unsteady grip (even as a child, I was never going to become a surgeon with my shaky hands!).

So, a bit disappointed, as said, but I'm hoping the experience, and therefore the pics, will improve as the sunnier days come along. Anyway, here's a few pics I managed to get yesterday.

Little grebe - aka Dabchick. These little buggers can spot you at a range of about 50 metres, and as soon as they do they dive underwater and swim to the other side of the pond. Go round to the other side in pursuit and they'll do the same again. Grrr...

A flapping goose.

I'll continue to practice with the lens extender, but next time I'll pick a brighter day.

Well this is obviously not my image , but I think it needs posting if only as a taster of what delights are heading our way shortly from the marvel that is the James Webb Space Telescope ...

And who better than the delightfully excitable Dr Becky to explain it all for you ... 🥰

A gloriously sunny day here in NL, so we took the opportunity to get the balcony boxes and other plant pots filled again. Primula and viola for us this year, in the main - blooms all summer long and brilliantly low maintenance. Bring it on…

And yes, that is a classic Dutch windmill in the background.

Can't actually remember how long it is since I tried a bit of solar imaging , trying to piece together the rig from umpteen boxes following a house move proved interesting but nowhere near as interesting as trying to remember my processing 'recipe' ...

Anyway , enough waffling , here's the efforts for what they're worth , standard 'whitelight along with an inverted view and a 'coloured in' offering just for the hell of it ...

The winners of the Scottish Nature Photography Awards 2021 have been announced.

The overall winner is landscape photographer Darren Cole, whose winning image portrays a dramatic scene of a muirburn fire, a controlled fire to burn away dead vegetation, below snow-covered peaks near his home on the Isle of Harris.

A football match, obviously - and in a very empty stadium - but as someone who stopped following the 'beautiful game' many years ago, I've no idea what we're seeing beyond some very tiny figures on a pitch. Was it important?

Lower league Cup final.

My team were losing 1 0, then 2 1, then 6 minutes into injury time, we equalise.

In Extra time, we eventually win 4 2,

I stopped watching the ' big teams' 22 years ago.

Well done to the team you support - and thanks for the explanation about the pic.
