The Northern Soul Top 500 Final Edition

The Northern Soul Top 500 Final Edition magazine cover

In 2000, the first book of its kind focussed on the popularity of the music culture NORTHERN SOUL.

A skilful and accurate appraisal of the much spoke of ‘scene’ culminated in strong sales not only from seasoned event goers and collectors, but newcomers with a thirst for knowledge about why these records are so sought after while largely being ignored upon first release.

Fast forward 22 years and the author reinvigorated decided to re-assemble the entire popularity of the legendary music genre by categorising THREE different 500’s, DJ Top 10’s and a Bubbling Under.

What is the true number 1 single?

Which 45’s have sky rocketed in value?

Contributions from legendary scene figures and historians such as Richard Searling, Tim Brown, Val Shively, Ian Dewhirst, Ginger Taylor, Karl White, Steve Woomble, Jonathan Woodliffe and many more.

Fascinating facts and trivia with a lifetime of experience.

The traditional big turntable hits followed by the emergence of a Soul night chart and a Rarer more collector focussed listing, are all featured in one glorious salute to probably the most remarkable music culture of all time.

The Northern Soul Top 500 is available September 1st from Amazon, Goldsoul and good retail outlets.

Hi Kev . Congratulations.
Looks like an essential read and definitive reference book capturing an expert Northern Soul record etc appraisal for 2021/22, with an impressive raft of ‘experts’ contributing.

Is the book hardback or soft back or available as both ?

Interesting to see some of the folk who have been referring to the "Top 500" in deragatory terms for years now get to "contribute".

I wonder when some last attended a venue

As the comment by Chatty was probably aimed at me given the names mentioned....I was at a venue this weekend just gone.  I attend one or two a month work permitting, I work 4 on 4 off so work as many weekends as I don't.  I did dance quite a bit Saturday, with many I danced too probably in the 500 (I have no idea what is in it btw).  I have no desire to hear the top 500 week in week out having spent most of my nighter life promoting lesser played, semi and unknowns, that is still my outlook now, for some its like listening to the same episode of top of the pops every week, how boring.

I do love the classics and that includes many of the top 500, some I don't, they are after all what I grew up with initially and what got me into the scene. I don't think I have been derogatory to the music, but like I said I prefer to hear something different on my nights out and have been vocal about this over the years.  Some people/Djs just don't know when to give a record a rest, familiarity breeds contempt as they say.

I didn't contribute to any of the Top 500s either.

anyone who writes about Northern Soul gets my vote👍...but what i'm not looking forward to is the rush (once the book has been received) of people telling me thay bought this that and the other from the lists for 2 woodbines and a brown-split with bitter😴.
