A Different World - The Holland Dozier Holland Songbook - Various Artists (Songwriter Series) - CDTOP 520

'The Sound Of Young America- an extensive salute to the classic songs of Motown and Detroit's flagship tunesmiths of the 60s and 70s.'

Release notes

Holland-Dozier-Holland songs have been revisited many times by all sorts of artists, and “A Different World” brings two dozen diverse names and interpretations of their repertoire, with Motown and Invictus stalwarts like the aforementioned Supremes and Tops (as well as  Martha and the Vandellas, Kim Weston, the Miracles and more) sharing disc space with The Band, Brenda Lee, The Vanilla Fudge, Laura Nyro and even The Fall – just a few of the non-traditional names who reinterpret Holland-Dozier-Holland’s vison of ‘The Sound Of Young America’ in their own individual and inimitable ways.

My sentiments exactly. This looks like a compilation for readers of Q magazine rather than anyone likely to subscribe here. As such, not illegitimate, but compared to the compilations of Van McCoy and Thom Bell productions, for example, this is a very different proposition that won't be finding its way into my collection.

For which Mrs Finn is very grateful.

There are a couple of dodgy choices. The Fall, Vanilla Fudge etc but I guess it shows the reach H-D-H had on popular music. The rest of the CD is pretty good.

The Donnie Elbert track is a big favourite of mine the stereo version I have on an All Platinum sampler blows away the 45 cut though, the strings really come to the fore.

The version of Dusty Springfield - A Love Like Yours is from the 1978 45 release. There is actually a better version she recorded in 1974 for an unreleased ABC/Dunhill LP, which is more (dare I say it) Northern.

I buy pretty much every Kent release, but this is a strange one. I don't have The Band, The Fall, Vanilla Fudge or Laura Nyro and don't have any particular desire to hear them. I've made a playlist of the rest of the tracks and it's pretty decent.

Laura Nyro's 1971 album, 'It's Gonna Take a Miracle' is worth getting hold of.

Yes, with Labelle and some good Motown covers.
