Just read a revue of this by Ian Levine in an old Black Music magazine from October 1975.

A record I"d associated with Richard Searling later Wigan Casino.

So was this played earlier ?

I've got a cassette tape that Ian did for me around 1973/4 with Jimmy Burns on it. I'm not sure Ian played it at Blackpool or The Blue Room at Sale but may have done a couple of times with little response . The tape was on repeat in the car so much that it slowed up or ground to a halt.

He had so many of this type of record that he wasn't pushing. By this time he was moving to more 70s records such as The Carstairs, Oscar Perry, Marvin Holmes etc.

He also revues Joseph Moore "I Can t Get To You" in the same issue along with some more 60s.

As far as I recall Sam had the copy off Levine (Jimmy Burns) and started playing it before Richard did. 

As always I could be mistaken 😂

The first time I heard Jimmy Burns was at Wigan Casino in the late 70's, but I'm not sure if it was Richard Searling or Soul Sam that played it.

I thought Jimmy Burns was great, but was not too keen on Brand New Faces. I do also like the Bobby James version as well.💫

Some records stick,  Jimmy burns is one of them.   

  Soul Sam spin, late 70s,  who played it first, no idea, but I remember Sam pushing it.

Wasn't that Arthur Fenn that was playing Brand New Faces? I always associate JB with Sam.

Maybe Merve, I don't know.

I didn't hear Arthur DJing until the Snaith events which were pretty much all "Modern "

Soul Sam was playing Jimmy Burns in 1978. 

It's on a tape at an all lighter at Colwyn Bay loaded on Mixcloud. 

I also recall him playing at Coalville Tiffany's around the same time.

Ian Levine described Jimmy Burns as a 60's stomper in the review. Now, given some of the "stompers" which were played around the same time, lots of them 100 mile an hour non soul rubbish, I would say that Jimmy's record was more mid tempo. Just a personal opinion.

Either way it's a fabulous dance track, something I've always liked, and one I associate with Martin (Soul Sam).

 Correct  Sam had it Sam time as johnny hampton , delites etc  quite a while before  wigan

Correct it was arthur  who I first heard play brand new faces

Delites, Lover recall being played at Notts Palais all-dayer in 77 a short time before I heard Jimmy Burns and Johnny Hampton. However all three were first played by Sam to my ears 😊.

All three are great records. The Delites is my pick of the bunch. I've always loved it, fantastic dance track and I concur - I always associate this with Sam.

Certainly not what I would class as a 60s stomper.

 

Sulerb record but more mid tempo as you said.  I switch between this and Bobby jones love both versions.

Ian Levine may have played it @ Sale but probably not @ Mecca @Rick Cooper or maybe once or twice but not enough dancefloor respone.

Like you say "turnover", Ian played Jmmy Raye about the same time without success and passed it on to Soul Sam. 

As an aside, I recall John Manship played Don Gardner to little appreciation and sold it to Ian from whom Sam acquired it from and played around the same time as the others mentioned.

Yes that's how I remember it too but at St Ives/Wirrina. Toni Basil as well covered up as Lauda Edmunds-Break These Chains.

Toni Basil was (according to KR top 500) was an acquisition from Ian Levine collection as was Jimmy Raye Philly Dog Around The World.

Jimmy raye Philly dog was the record that got me into northern.  Raw energy an awesome record.

I seem to recall that Richard got Jimmy Burns from either Levine where he’d got a few things ,or a trade with Soul Sam .I’ll try and find out Paul ,ok 

I’ve just asked Richard ,he got Jimmy Burns from Levine ,along with  Don Gardner ,Billy Watkins ,JD Martin ,Jay Traynor and Georgie Porgie on Jubilee ( still don’t know that ? ) what a hit !! Cheers Eddie

Prior to that didn’t John manship own the don gardner and sell or trade it to Levine, i’m sure I’ve heard that story told ?

I thought Jimmy Burns was great, but was not too keen on Brand New Faces. I do also like the Bobby James version as well.💫

Bobby James is every bit as good as Jimmy Burns and hard to tell any difference  just rarity, even then Bobby’s isant that far behind if truth be known , I sold it a few years ago ,one I will never get back
