Been listening to this track, which is new to me and absolutely great. I understand that this is an acetate only, has there been any reissues of this? Are there many acetate cuts out there? Interested to know more about this track.

What are out there came from Ady, a few of us have it.  I've been playing it years now, way back to early Lifeline days.  Ady did say it would possibly be out sometime in the future??

That can't be a Maltese cut.  Is it known to be a Carnival production, or a later recording?

I’ve been with Rob Thomas this evening and mentioned this track, he seems to remember it being covered up as Hilda Ogden, Arthur and Mick H covered it has Estha Grant, he said it was actually Jean Shy, but acetate only and Ace have the rights now to it? The plot thickens

Thanks Chalky, I really enjoyed listening to the snippet list, it's easy to see why The 100 club has been leading the way all these years. I wouldn't have thought the Kenneth Wright track as your typical 100 club dancer, however I haven't visited the place for ages so what do I know. I agree the Norma Jenkins sounds wonderful.

Yeah it was Hilda, I remember Rob playing it in his car to me.  I also had it covered as Esther Grant.  Think Arthur and myself were the main two behind it after Rob packed it in other than Ady down the 100 Club.

My recollection .. Norma Jenkins - Come On And Take My Love ... a George Kerr tune scheduled for release on ABC .. but it never happened .. she did get an ABC release on her duet with Troy Keyes in '68

George had a very long association with Norma starting during his time working at the NY Jobete office with Miss Ray where she was used as a singer for demo recording which included 'Try Love (One More Time)' .. which he co-wrote with Sidney Barnes and gained a release via The Sparkels on Old Town.. and of course 'The Airplane Song' (Maltese) & 'Can You Imagine That' ( Desert Moon) which was a big 70s spin .. plus other GK associated releases

Is that the same woman as Chicago Soul singer, Jean Shy?  I've always thought that that surname couldn't be her born family name.  Maybe if it was spelled "C-H-I it stood for "Chicago"- hence "Jean Chi" .  Maybe that was her nickname, later used as a stage name.  But after becoming her official stage name, she spelled it "S-H-Y" instead of "C-H-I" to avoid people thinking it should be pronounced like "Chee"?

Jean Shy was born Andria Jean Alexander in Chicago, IL.  She did have a local hit as part of Tim and Jean with "Spring Fever" .

Thanks!  I figured "Shy" wasn't her real surname.  I bought her Brunswick and Dakar records.  I also remember "Spring Fever" but didn't buy it.

Flip side of the Maltese boot , thought it sounded familiar.

What Andy Rix says is correct, we're still clearing rights. The flip is terrific too 'Dont Start Something You Aint Gonna Finish

I’ve had an acetate for many years .. didn’t know who it was to be honest

I played it as Clara Hardy when I first got it.. interesting to find out it’s Norma Jenkins

Mal, there's a you tube post of this acetate that seems to be recorded a lot slower than this.

Sorry It's okay it's been posted slowed down. I don't know why as it sounds better at the correct speed.

Could be, probably is if he/she is a bootlegger. That said, sounds like her to my ears.. folks take a listen, is it her?

 

The recording sounds like the singer could be Norma.  But it is difficult to be sure.  The voice doesn't give telltale clues that it is another person.

Just heard from George Kerr,he’s just listened to the acetate and says it’s Norma Jenkins with Sidney Barnes and was cut at Jobete in NYC
