Where do people see the scene being in 20 years time?

Even though there are a few younger people getting into the music, i dont think that enough are coming through to keep the scene going in years to come.

I for one dont want to see the death of northern soul but is there really anyway is can stay strong.

I know that a lot of people dont like youngsters turning up at all nighters and often moan whwn they aren't taking it seriously enough. But this cant go on. Without younger people coming through, it could all be over sooner than we think!

How can this be prevented?

Average age now must be 40+

So in 20 years, the scene will be confined to residential homes.

my opinion it will just shrink dramatically with an event once a month somewhere around the country. might be a good thing mate. I will be 51 then.

Who will the live acts be, apart from possibley Little Carl Carlton and Little Stevie Wonder, both in their late sixties! Tribute act maybe? Tribute DJ's like Soul Sammy and Ritchie Sterling?!!

Now wonder the prices of records are getting hyped now as no one will want them / pay for them in 20 yeras time

20 years time!!!! think the scene will go back to being "underground" like it's birth... only this time... 6 feet underground! There just aint enough interest from todays youth to maintain the scene as it is. and to be honnest why should there be? They have their own music, their own scene. In my opinion the resurgence in the scene over the last decade or more, has been fueled by "returnees" (like myself) folks who have had kids grow up, have the proverbial "disposable" and the time to get out more and relive their youth.

A point of interest Hippo made was with regard to the hyped prices asked for records!, as a collector I wont pay the ridiculous prices asked for what sometimes, is nothing more than "The Emporer's New Clothes". Today i might pull a record from the racks and think "So this is going for 500 quid now!" 20 years from now I might be pulling the same record, and think "Wonder what this sounds like?" Ah! Altziemers!!! I cant wait! think of all the new tunes am gonna hear!

Think it'll happen sooner than 20 years time.. but yes agree there will be fewer events, and a much smaller dedicated crowd going to them... do you think we'll be reminiscing about the good old days, talking about "Lifeline tracks" and "New Century oldies" as people now do about Wigan/ Stafford/ Yate etc.... ?

What can be done to prevent it?

Nothing the scene then will be like the Rock and Roll scene now much as they want it to keep going without new blood the scene is bound to die out. I think there'll still be collectors much as there is with RnR but little else

Interestingly, i can remember having this conversation with a group of fellow soulies. at a boozy soul night out 25 years ago.after getting thru numerous shots of vodka, we concluded our conversation by saying that it wouldn't matter to any of us because we would all be too old and too grown up to still be involved, result? all of us now in our mid-40s are still involved and still love the scene much more then we did don't know about being grown up though Del x

The sad part is that whatever is left of the scene in 20 years time todays top tunes will be by then played out oldies.

Will there be a geriatric version of the soul police or will they have handed in their gun and badge like in the films.

Yeah but there's always the forgotton, or re-discovered oldies syndrome.

On the subject of the records. All the time there is hundreds of thousands of pounds a year changing hands for these records, there should always be a scene. Ebay is relatively recent in the history of collecting desirable and rare vinyl and I'll bet the difference in turnover has dramatically increased for rare soul since it has been around. Imagine going back in time to the Torch and telling those people about how you got something nice on Smash from a guy in Maryland off the internet.

My point is we don't know what's round the corner. I want to believe that people will always want to own and hear rare soul records. I also think that if it did take a bit of a dramatic dip in years to come then some Ian Levine alike character could come along, re-hype it and cash in, a sort of Malcolm Maclaren moment.

Who knows, we need to keep the faith, tell yer kids, tell yer friends, tell anyone who'll listen. Keeps on burning . . . .

In 20 years time.... wherever the person "has" to be dependent on age.... anything from nursing or residential home to still being in "their" home ....

Average age.... doesn't matter.... except the "do's" still (if at all) happening will be afternoon "tea dances".... so there's no worries there then about he/she "lasting through the whole niter" ....

Younger people.... can't see it "going on" through them because of "their own scene(s)" today.... which may be like how ours is to us now.... who would have thought that 20-30 years on we'd all be still "doing it" today.... I didn't if I'm honest.... thought it'd be a "few tapes to remember" getting played in the car ....

Death of Northern Soul.... if being realistic then it will happen "as we know it" today, at some stage ....

But (in line with this thread) to all you "DJ's and collectors".... what you "have to decide" is WHEN this is going to happen.... because you know you'll have to make sure you put all your "big money 45's" on eBay to get rid of them for a decent pension fund before "every one of them" becomes a "can't give it away tune".... never mind being a £200, £500, £2000 or "name your price" piece of 7" vinyl as they are now....

WHAT I'LL DO IS SAVE YOU THE "WHEN" AND THE "EFFORT" INVOLVED and take them off you now for £10-20 a each.... that's GOTTA be a FAIR DEAL if you've got a 500 box.... that's a "pension" of £5000-10000 NOW rather than just having to "wheely bin" them later when you "can't" sell them .... Go on.... you know it makes sense ....

I don't think you give us younger generation very much credit. There are lots of younger DJ's and collectors, maybe they are unoticed becaused people don't want to notice them. I am 23 years old and have son of my own. I'm sure he'll tell me all the things your kids have told you growing up. No one can foresee what will happen in 20 years, so just keep on pushin'. If you're gonna sit around and talk about how it's gonna be dead, then get out now. Leave it to rest of us still living it.

They say "You can't take it with you", so it's not gonna die just because you did!
