Mormar44
We heard from Dave last nite "I'm on a boat with free beer"!!!!!!! OMG.... I think Dave and John enjoyed the weekend's hospitality to the max. The idea of having a fridgh at the back of the stage with free beer for the DJ's is an idea that they are hoping will be taken up by all venue's they DJ at !! When I saw him on the SS Heidi with 10 bottles of Becks in his arms and 5 minutes later up for some more I wondered if it was free onboard. Not sure how long its gonna take him to get over the trauma of some guy landing in the middle of the decks halfway through his spot on the boat though !! Link to comment

After 5 minutes Dave told the guy that he could get up off hiss knees and he was forgiven. The fixed smile on Daves face didnt convince anyone !! It looked like a drunken accident to me but there were rumours circulating that it was one of Malaykas german fan club protesting at the ( disgracefully) short spot she got before Rimmer chucked her off !! Fantastic weekend from start to finish, thanks very much Ralf and Jan Definately back next year. Link to comment
Dave Thorley
Bit of a review Hamburg, old style dock city, with the docks and the ships right in the city centre, home of the mighty left wing St Pauli FC, which is supported by people from all over Germany. Also home of the Reeperbahn, famous 60's red light district where the Beatles played and the location of The Madarin Kasino. The city has a long tradition of a soul music scene along side the early german mod scene. The Madarin Kasino, ledgendary night club which has played a big part in the dance scene of the city for many years, used to host the Mojo Club back in the day. The venue comprises of three rooms, a club like main room, which was host to the northern line up. A middle room were modern was played and a smaller room that worked as the Crossover/R&B room on the saturday night only. So all in all a good place for a weekender. People travelled from all over germany for this first event, plus a fair few over from the UK. On the friday the venue filled fairly quickly with about 600 through the door. Saturday had near 1000 coming throu the gate. Due to it's location at one end of the Reeperbahn and the middle of club land, people came and went allnight long. The main room was kicking right through, boths nights. The crowd happy to dance to anything thrown at them, although everyone's playlist was rooted in the 60's. The concrete floor played hell with the old bones of those from the UK, but didn't hinder everyone else throwing themselves around with great gusto. Billy Wiz found himself a nice spot up on the stage to dance, so was like a wirling dervish all night. Nice to catch up with some of the Greatstone crew and those from Yorkshire that had made the trip. Also great to meet up with my old DJing mate from Yate, Steve (The Original) Smith, now a resident of Berlin. Musically the main room was spot on with a mix of current german hot tunes from the likes of Thorsten, Lars and Marc Forrest plus classic dancers from locals Markus and hosts Jan and Ralph. The crowd were very kind to Dave Rimmer, John Weston and myself when our time came to hit the decks. The modern room, was bangin' on the friday night, with outstanding sets from Lars, Marc and Malayka. But no one had a poor set, a great night, even though the sound system worked against you. Saturday night the system was fixed and sounding great, but the room was harder to work. As the third room was open off the modern room, so it became a bit of a corridor with people walk across the dance floor. But both these rooms looked great, as they had once been a massive chinese restaurant. So although now fitted out with dance floors, systems and bars, all the original decor is still intact, making them look very cool and moody. Saturday afternoon was spent at a bar on a small platz by the river. Everyone chatting and listening to a more laid back set of tunes, weather was nice so half in the bar and half outside sitting round tables. Then finally sunday and the boat trip. The boat was packed from 3pm to 9 when it finished. Docked every hour for some to join and others leave and spent it's time traveling up the river, round the old basins and some of the canals. That boat was rocking, in more ways than one, killer. Fantastic weekend, great hosts, cool music, funky city. Dave Rimmer
interesting theory, not true though.... I didn't chuck Malayka off, I chucked Marcus off It was a drunken accident, that it turned out was Dave Thorley's fault because the guy was passing drinks to Dave when he fell over. I must admit I seriously considered some entirely non accidental consequences, which would have involved seeing if he could swim when he was unconcious, but then thought shit happens, it could just as easily have happened to anyone else, and it was actually my beer that he knocked off the shelf onto the decks. Funnily enough in a normal venue I always remove any glasses near the decks and never put my own pint on the same table as the decks, on a boat of all things I ignored my own rules and put a bottle on a shelf above the decks ! I was actually more worried about being electricuted than the record that got covered in beer The guy was absolutely mortified, and about half an hour later came to speak to me with what seemed like half a pint of vodka and a beer for me (I think he waited half an hour for me to calm down ) On this occasion there was no harm done and we parted as friends with a promise to have a drink in Nuremberg in December. Guest toby
My first visit to hamburg (but i will return). Arrived friday 05.00 at Stanstead to be greeted by the Essex soul crowd Helen,Mark & Ginger Dave + a few more cant recall names sorry ,so it was game on.. Got to hamburg via Dusseldorf early afternoon, hotel sorted, nearest bar sorted,on the phone to Dave Rimmer/John Weston, told them base camp was the Irish Pub next to my hotel, met up with them very early evening and again game on. Dave was very happy about the "Kerry" on sale chuffed as nuts he was, after so many beers time to walk up the Reeferbahn, what a place that was, live sex shows in every other doorway, sex shops the odd shop & eating house but it was sex sex sex everywhere.(No i did NOT take part in any of it). The venue..Mandarin Casino.very busy ,great tunes played in both rooms and as stated Free beer thanks to Dave Rimmer cheers Dave mines another dozen bottles (hic).Me & Mandy left about 05.30 am knackerd, back to the hotel a little kip and off to watch the Rugby in Daves base camp pub "the London Pub" England won so all the better and after even more beer time to freshen up ready for the Saturday session all nighter. Saturday nighter was outstanding,I went in the Modern room to be with Dave Thorley and he was on fire playing wonderfull tunes, the crowd loved him and after more free JD & Cokes/beer off to catch Dave & Captain Weston in the main hall. Daves quote off the night"This is Northern soul.get off youre asses and Dance" and did he get em up YES he did fantastic sets well done mate. met up with Bill Wiz who seemed to take over an area of dance floor that had so much talc on it you could not even walk accross it,untill some nice foriegn person tipped a whole bottle of beer over it,poor old Billy.Loads and loads of Brits in the place it was like going to a local soul nighter,i never realised that Ginger Dave had such twinkle toes for dancing all night long with Helen & Mark, good on ya people. Sunday boat trip was a revalation, too many people on such a little boat, but good fun, again free beer thanks to Dave Rimmer.Captain john Weston nearly went over the side on numerous occasions, Funneist comment of the day "Dave ,Keb Darge wants his teeth back" spoken in all seriousness by Katina, poor old Dave did'nt know what to say so he went off to get yet more free beer, great stuff. Best bit of the whole weekender,we were in a pub when Dave got a text from John Weston all it said "I'm lost",when Dave phoned him and asked where he was, no answer from a near crying John. Then we all fell about laughing, how the hell are we supposed to know where he was, never mind said Dave more beer anyone.. Thanks must go to Ralf & Jan for a well organised/run weekender thanks guys it was great fun.. A big thanks go to Mandy,Dave Rimmer,John weston,Pete Bennett & Andrea,Dave Thorley,Makayla,Helen & Mark,Ginger Dave,Katina,Billy Wiz & Mike and to anyone who ive forgot thanks for a great weekender we WILL return.. Guest malayka
now, a bit more awake again, i remember two funny stories which happened to me on the weekend. when i was djing, i played my chester rosewood cover up, a guy came to the desks with pen and paper and asked me what the record is, i told him it's a cover up and he asked me if "cover up" is the name of the group or the name of the song.... sunday boats trip, there was a whole in the floor behind the decks, you had to be careful that your feet don't get stuck in there, and i don't know why, i got very scared while imagined that i drop a record, it falls down and sinks into the bilgewater...i also was told - while beeing on the boat - that the captain of the boat, when he gets drunk, drives very close to the big seaships, which didn't make me feel more comfortable... amazing weekend, through and through... Billywhizz
10 thousand miles is a long long way from the scene you love,10 thousand miles is a long long way to find out its all the same, with all the family faces you know it was like being in your back yard Dave thorley, Dave Rimmer and John Western, and all the other djs there the music was superd, 60's up tempo up front with a few 70's thrown in from start to finish if you like your dancing that was the place to be, bit of a down fall it was a polished concrete floor, but with plenty of talce it was overcome, the young german soulies are really friendly, i can't get over how good the music was over the weekend really enjoyed the boat trip, who was the tall blonde girl doing the backdrops and some floor work she was good and (lovely) she came over and wished me a safe journey home i see butch just coming over for the next one he's got to pull something magic out of his box to keep the floor going if your looking in im only joking bring your burnley box with you i hope everyone got home safely spread the faith don't keep it. The dancers for making it so much fun to spin 45s to (no matter in which room), the promoters for being so adventurous and capable to try to and succeed in putting on such a great weekend, all Soulies from near and far who made it such a great time and fun and everybody else that I may have missed out now. Hamburg sure now holds one of THE German Soulweekenders! Great stuff Ralf`n´Jan, great stuff! Marc Link to comment
