I think it all depends on how much recent exposure the 'reactivated' disc has had, there are hundreds of records that were played for a few weeks or months back in the day at different venues that have never really been played again, so for all intensive purposes, to most on today's scene they are almost like recent discoveries........of course this is only my opinion & im a great advocate of spinning new material, but the pool of totally unknown records is getting smaller by the day, so it makes sense to dig back into the distant past for things.

There were also & still are regional spins, a record that could be quite familiar to say the South Coast soulies, but could be relatively unknown or unplayed else where.

When it doesnt make sense is when its a top 500 regular oldie spin that we all know anyway.

ive spent 20 years of collecting forgotten wigan casino spins and there are 100s that never get played and ARE good too!

more recently ive been doing the same with mecca oldies too hence my leanings towards 70s at the moment

but as some are so old and forgotten they still seem new and take an equal time to 'break' as a newie

plus its great fun too!

There are loads of little known and underplayed oldies,a lot were only played at one venue for a matter of weeks, and if you travelled around the country to different venues it would be mostly new to you.It's great to see small venues like the Attic Mansfield giving these records well deserved spins again.

Possibly Ezzie, i was a bit lifeless meself by then bloody great night of music too, current biggies which you want to hear and loads of stuff i didnt know and wanted to hear, that can relate to this thread really cos that night proved to me that reactivation of oldies dont have to be ones that we already know,

it's nice to hear oldies again that not been spun for years.

My dad always say in this part of the country you never hear Apple peaches pumpkin pie and i guess like many it's been played too much before so they fed up with it

One man's overplayed oldie, is another persons underplayed oldie.

It depends where you live, where you go, your age, where you went in the past and so on.

However, underplayed oldies sound far better to me than a new record that honestly just wouldn't have been played 10 -15 -20 etc years ago.

all good points....in the 80s i was in norwich now im in bristol some friends havnt heard tunes that were huge back then for me and vice versa some of their faves from back then ive never heard...

new discoveries are always great especially as a collector aswell as dj/dancer but shouldnt be played out just because they are new.. they should be of the same quality of the tune they are replacing...would rather have a night of known killers than a night of unknown fillers to be honest !....

Surely great tunes are great tunes - it's mainly down to NS politics and DJ snobbery I reckon that certain tunes stop getting spins.

I don't DJ, but if I did, I'd have no problems at all in playing some tunes that are considered "played out" - funny thing is I have been to soul nights very recently where I have heard "The Night", "Landslide", "Sliced Tomatoes", "Heatwave" and even horror of horrors "Do I love You" played AND the floor stayed full each time!

The thing is once a great tune always a great tune. It seems that a lot of DJs are going for this "Rare soul" niche and have got into a national p*ssing contest to see who can play a whole set without anyone recognising any of the tunes rather than entertaining the crowd!

Stop being snobs and rifle through your boxes and crack out some oldies - they'll always be better than that modern soul/disco shite anyway

It took a hell of lot of badgering the DJ until he finally caved in - but all my hard work was worth it

I think what has happenned over the last 20 odd years is that DJ's and serious soul fans have yearned for just that "soul" music which in essence is what it originally was all about. I too enjoy the 4 beats to the bar white and white sounding classics that were made legendary at Wigan but why oh why is it so bad to play stuff that no ones heard - even if its all nite long and especially if its soul. Just think all these sounds would have had to been played for the 1st time at one point

Don't get me wrong - i love to hear a reactivation but like i've said before it doesn't just depend where you go or what part of the country you're in but who's playing it i.e Butch playing Hold on help is on the way - G Davis/R Tyler at Jacks - would it have been accepted if anyone else had played it ?????

Well the Salvadors has been hammered to death. As for JF, I did reactivate this briefly down here, because it wasn't being played anywhere round here. It might well be top 500, but at the local do's it wasn't even in the top 5,000. As for The Crow, you'd have to ask Mick Smith about that Think Keb started that one off again anyway.

I know its not a dig at me Helen , what i was trying to saying was, i buy records that i like for me first and formost, then if i get asked to dj i have to have faith in my taste and try to judge and play to the floor with the tunes i bought for me, still with me you see i dont buy a tune i dont like but i know it will fill the dance floor (not anymore anyway ), thats what i was meaning but you have made me explain myself more now You know me Helen and i do always try and play for the floor and i aint afraid to chuck in the unexpected even though there is a chance it could bomb, if it bombs it bombs but you got to give a few tunes a chance in a set but i wouldnt go down a certain road of playing up me arse if the floor was empty but i wouldnt play safe either (hopefully not anymore either), i do try and mix it up a bit but then it depends on where you dj too, different venues different style of tunes expected,

I know where your coming from though cos ive heard djs do a set with their backs to the dance floor and played the wrong tunes for the venue and didnt give a shit, do you play modern at an oldies night or oldies at a rare soul night or rare 60s at a modern night

but no matter where you go its great to hear some tunes that are either forgotten or unheard before well it is if you like them anyway,

Get your dictionary out & look up Northern Soul........you'll realise then that the whole point of the original scene was/is to find new tunes to play..........gets harder, thats why reactivations of interesting oldies is so vital too these day's. I dont think anyone is saying that the top 500 for want of a better expression, arnt on the whole good records, but do you really want to hear them out every week, to me this isnt a Northern Soul scene as it goes against every ethic, that the original pioneer DJ's & yes those at Wigan & all the venues from the 'golden era' were trying to acheive, along with some very hard working DJ's these day's. I have no problem with anyone wanting to listen to Frank Wilson until they are sick, but pse dont fob me off with venues playing this & the like constantly, as being the 'real' NS venues..............stay in ya time warp guys, I'll come & visit once a year & have a thoroughly good time, but the rest of the time i'll stick to the genuine article thank you . BTW 'Rare Soul Shite' was what this wonderful music of ours was known as prioir to the term NS, some on the scene prefer this term so as not to be asscotiated with what the rest of the world think is NS .

I think it's all about striking a balance. It's great to hear a really familiar tune that makes you feel all warm n fuzzy but i also love the excitement of hearing a tune for the first time n then rushing around asking people 'whats this..who's it by..aint it great...' In the old days i used to carry a note pad around wiv me and write down the new tunes i hadn't heard before, now i put them on me phone so i dont forget to look em up wen i get home.

If you went to see the Who and they didn't play 'Substitue' or 'My generation' ud be disappointed wouldn't u? (ok even if it's not ur musical genre u know what i mean) Why did we go to the forum to see Mary Love, Tommy Hunt, The flirtation..etc etc..It wozn't coz we wanted to hear all their new numbers and yet unrecorded ones woz it?

My plea to DJ's is mix it up a bit, a nice balance of rare n familiar will always get the party started.

I can remember being at the Blackpool weekender where Bobby played. Sure you were there sat on the table with a load of the Irish guys too.

MBCBTM was an old Youth club fave for me. Seeing him sing it there was the highlight of that weekend for me.
