It's the same Van McCoy song as done by Donnie Elbert (that was unreleased too - came out on a Joe Boy 45 a few years ago taken from an unreleased acetate). Can't recal who else has done this song off the top of my head BUT Aretha's unreleased version from her latest CD sounds the business to me?

The track's producer Ralph Murphy confirmed to me, several years ago, that it was by Chris. He was producing both Chris and Donnie at around the same time (he did the Musicor single on the former, and "Along Came Pride" on the latter) and thinks that the tape box for "So Soon" may have just been mislabelled. I know the fellow who Glenn Gunton licensed it from, and I don't think that there was any attempt to mislead on either his or Glenn's part. Bottom line is, it's a really good record by anyone!

I do appreciate your kind words on the U-Roy set, BTW. The man is a godlike genius in my book!

That's four of us, actually. Aretha's the most overrrated artist in the history of soul music IMO. I don't think she's bad by any means, but she's not even as good a singer as her two late sisters were, let alone some of the other names that she's made out to be better than...

...I guess the bottom line for me is that I've never forgiven her for crucifying "Respect"

Yes it is, if it had been undiscovered as old vinyl would have been just behind the Parliaments and J. J. Daniels as best new aggro soul discovery of recent years, fantastic tune.

And Chalky and especially Steve G go and wash your ears out with undiluted bleach, thought you two would have been in tune enough to agree her brilliance, shocked is an understatement.

And for Rachel the whole CD is fantastic, especially side 2, which are leftovers and better than most other artists inclusions of that period, IMVHO (which is the only VHO on this I should say!)

I am not arguing with Tony as dont want to blow any future chances (however slim) to get a Kent credit for something at some point in the future!

She's never improved on anyone's original version of anything - for me it's her original material or versions of relatively obscure material (like 'So Soon') that works best...

About 2 months ago, Kev Briscoe made me listen to the entire set in his car (I didn't take much persuading).

Needless to say, I was on Amazon the minute I got home.

The entire CD is an essential purchase (even for the mutt n' jeff blokes above ).

Soul People... make sure its in your stocking this christmas!

Can't get over excited about either version, but if I had to choose it would be Donnie Elbert, I'm afraid.

Back to the subject in hand, i agree with everything you have said above

I know what you mean about Parliaments etc and agree folks'd be creaming themselves if it had surfaced as a one off acetate etc BUT Chris Clark managed to make itself into a monster from being originally an unreleased track on a CD (and one or two others too, which might make another interesting thread on it's own i guess?), so hope for it yet eh? As someone said earlier, it's a carvers jobbie ain't it, then watch it go

Legendary 60's Soul journalist Norman Jopling licenced "So Soon" to Glenn at Joe Boy in good faith as being by Donnie Elbert.

Norman was actually sold the master, on an acetate, by Donnie Elbert from the days when Donnie was based in London (doing A&R for Polydor I believe). Donnie told Norman the that he (Donnie) was the artist.

Pete Lyster played the Aretha version at Soulvation on Saturday and it rocked the place.

oh my god was the reaction to that how that was not released in the first place that is pure quality.

I wouldn't mind a copy on vinyl to play out. that is like one Aretha song i love more then anything else she did, it has to be a great record and i would class it in my top lists of Northern soul.
