Went into bespoke tailoring in 74 made loads of baggies... with secret pockets. also later on 1950's style wind cheetas (james dean style) with one off record labels embroidered on the back. Still have the paper label from my Skinners original paralells with price £3.75 stuck inside my record box. Also the Bowie baggies with pleats all round the waist. But personally speaking cant beat the fashion from the wheel/mod/skin days so smart but oh so cool.

Jeloneks is long gone,Wilkos superstore on that site now...Shoe corp also demolished you probably wouldnt recognise Mansfield now if you visited,and its so called improvements are not for the better either.

i still have my baggies made at the same tailor who did them in the 70's... keith malinson in rotherham, he is due to retire anytime now, he used to have blackboards outside the shop with all the prices for pockets , channel seams ,turnups etc... he also made jackets, circle skirts ....and still does now !

we would pay a deposit and pay weekly till he would hand them over

he is a true "old school" tailor and a gem to chat to, makes wicked clothes to die for in true northern soul style !

I have pdf of a brown leather Skinners badge, I have it on my PC desktop but cant load it into this thread !! Sorry....

I bought the the Skinners from Longton/Stoke and went back for another pair later that year I think that would have been around same time March / April 1973.

I think they were from Liverpool as were originally deckhands or dockers workwear.

They attracted a lot of interest when I went out and about ! Some guys in Brum wanted to buy them off me at Oasis and send me home bagless ...tehe.

Mine were both in blue denim, loads of dye in them because got wet once ice skating and legs were blue when I took them off.

Oh yes there was more to us soulies those days ice skating & tenpin bowling etc..

Skinners were almost certainly dockwear, the shop worker told me they were from Liverpool/Manchester....perhaps we have a Liverpudlian SS member who could confirm?

In 1970 I had workboots and cut the leather from front of boots to reveal steel toecaps, polished em up a treat , what a plonker I was / am .... tehe

Hi Datch - I am sure I must know you, I recognise several faces on that photo but the old grey matter just cannot put names to them - as a regular at the glider during those days we were often in Peterborough on a friday night or saturday morning trying to score whilst trying to elude Geoff Capes (strong man & copper) at the same time. Do you remember Fo Fossitt, his old man used to work on the door at the glider so we got in for free - I used to hang around with Nicky Venables, Terry Wyler (RIP) & that crowd at the time.

Back to fashion - early seventies I used to have long blonde streaked hair & get a lot of my clothes from a mod / suedy type shop in East Ham, I used to turn up at the Torch in a pair of white skinner type jeans, rib striped airtex shirt & a black jacket with small white spots on, it was kind of pilly

By the way if anybody has an old pair of Skinners - I will pay big money for them, size & condition does'nt matter, just about to open a scooter / mod / skin / northern soul shop up here in Jakarta & looking for all kinds of gear lol

The photo was taken in '74.The guy with the vest on standing is Mike Hutchinson (Hutch) from Sale,he was at ours last night for the footy,and I picked his brains about it.He reckons he was hiding from the camera behind the guy who suddenly did a backdrop!Incidentally the same photo was used to publicise the play "Once upon a time in Wigan" that was doing the rounds recently.

The main man in York for all your tailoring needs is a chap called Mr Seymore used to be in Church Street now in Bootham still used by the better dressed person on the scene. Trevski say no more. I couldn't afford this style of dress had make do with half mast Sta-pres, 501's, didn't do Skinner or Brutus. Ben Sherman fitted shirts Red socks & crew neck sweater to match with brown loafers later club soled black brogues. They lasted about 10 years

Harrington jacket, with the lining tailored to fit your tool of choice or suit jacket with a ticket pocket and half a dozen buttons on the cuffs The lads who I knocked about with were a cross between skins and boot boys were a bit older than me and were required to wear the Dr Martin boots in Gold, Silver Cherry red and black depending what position you were at in the pecking order. I started going to nighters and they used to take the piss as did most not on scene. I had my head shaved at York's nonsense barber called Derrick down an ally way and I had shaved in partings giving me the nick name "Football head" by some. First in York to have this style, A couple of years before it caught on with the Punks.

I did eventually get some tailor made Prince of Wales Check parallels and a Suit and the last thing I had made by Mr Seymore was my wedding suit.

I hated the brutus Pattern shirt the ones with the likes of Laurel and Hardys with rounded collars. Hated cheese cloth shirts, flares, Major Domo boots

And do you mean the zip up cardigans, we called them football jumpers. My team, Southport, played in Old Gold, the nearest you could get was Yellow & black. The propper ones were some type of wool, but you could get cheep versions on the market made out of nylony acrylic stuff!. The colours were brighter, in blue & white or red & white but they were not real. The same thing was a black jumper with a red & green star on it. They came out with a cheepo version of that one with 3 stars, as worn by Wigans abortion on TOTP

Fly is an old, old, friend of mine.

We grew up together, same rough old housing estate.

He was around for just a couple of years, (early Wigan & Sammys as you say).

He started a Building company in 78, with his late brother, Albert.

Good lads, both of 'em.

Lives in Dinnington and doing really well last time I saw him (a couple of years ago in a Restaurant).

Remember those rupert checks,also the cardigans,Iwas about thirteen when they came out and although I had a pair of skinners bought for me at the time had to nick the cardigan and a few other items and leave them at the bottom of the garden and change back into what I went out from home in,sed to stay out all night then too (worth the slaps)and go over kettering from corby to the north park etc.Also did a shop at the time with a mate of mine and we got about 200 shirts,top class (got nicked for it later down the line)patchwork brutus shirts and loads of them round collar paisley and other design shirts among them I also got another one of those cardigans of the dummy that was in the shop window as when we got in there was a race between me and my mate to get said cardy but he fell over a rack of shirts so I got there first.Frank wright loafers were the footwear along with dm s (never had them and a type of wedge shoe thats sole looked a bit like a brothel creeper but not quite as clumpy.Remember the star jumpers and also parallel trouser the same width as skinners 24 inch I had a black pair and wore them with a barathea blazer,round this time lads such as Wilky were wearing torch badges on theirs.The sta press and button down shirt thing was around when Iwas about 11 and had even then a few of each with a harrington.Mispent youth early years hanging round with older lads but it was great .I was quite big for my age and when I was 13 used to have to go to the bar on occasions for my mates Kieth Harpur and George(of later on chemist robbing fame )to get the drinks as they couldnt get served even though they were three or four years older than me.Unfortunately leading such a quiet life led to some time away but hey swings and roundabouts though I look these days and dont think I would want a son of thirteen doing whgat I did but hey times were different then.Oh I always wanted a prince of wales check harrinton back then but never got my hands on one but the top coat of time and I have always really liked them had to be the sheepskin.

Outlets : Stolen from Ivors and Justin's in Manchester Loads of us used to send our mums shopping for us , as older lads used to hang around outside and roll anyone carrying a Stolen from Ivors bag

We had mass gatherings at TREWS the tailors in Halifax 73 onwards, trousers , jackets , waistcoats , comparing drawings of what we wanted . Also used to have coats made at Burtons

Petrol blue parallels Friggin Tartan flat caps , penny round collar shirts

Outlets : Stolen from Ivors and Justin's in Manchester Loads of us used to send our mums shopping for us , as older lads used to hang around outside and roll anyone carrying a Stolen from Ivors bag
