Since my last post "Calling all promoters" I think the majority of us have reached the conclusion that there are TOO MANY VENUES!!To help me next make sense of the current "scene" can you help by answering the next fundamental question.

Is the pursuit of "D.J.'ing" on the "Northern Soul" scene the root of all our problems - clashing, soaring prices of "in demand" records, venue overload,local feuds.

Have to say thought round here all DJs played OVO. Had a shock recently when I saw local man playing carvers of released stuff. I was going to complain to the promotor, but then remembered he was the one that booked said DJ in the first place.

I would have still said something too.. just because I promotor books a DJ, doens't mean they know every single record in a DJ's box & what labels they're on....

The promotor might have been grateful to be told....

Everyone wants to be a DJ these days...used to be rockstars...but the emergence of the Superstar DJs means all the kids want to be one...When I first got into DJing back in 89 I was the only one out of a large group of friends who was musically anal enough to persue it haha...now there is a stigma attached to being a DJ so much so that I loathe to mention it when meeting new people in case they put me in that vacuous catagory I despise.

I have always supported hammie,taffy,toby and co.....sometimes I despair. Of copurse it's well known by me and everyone else that these fellas are genuine and I've said so on many an occasion (and I've been around longer than you chrissie ) I'm not talking about these guys and well you know it they will always have my patronage because they deserve it full stop.However I'm not gonna list all the wanna be's......not enough room on here lol......T

To be fair to you, you managed to have a snipe at the Brit in another thread, and I haven't seen you do that before, so maybe it's pastures new in your fight to rid the scene of your perceived dross? Have to be honest though I'm put off of any of the venues that you support purely because I'm starting to think that everybody who goes to them is the same mindset as you. Shame cos I would have liked to have tried Burnley for instance, but the way in which you tar promoters supporters (back-slappers is your term of reference) of specific venues with the same brush must be rubbing off

Back to the actual subject matter of the thread as opposed to your personal grievances. There are too many venues, but it's not just about wanting to be a DJ, it's more about filling a need and that is people don't want to travel anymore. Everybody is that bit older, most like a beer and the essence of the scene, which to me is dancing, (how else do you celebrate listening to something fantastic) is on the wane. Socialising has become increasingly more important to many, so the purist soul scene that many desire is struggling. Beeker said in the other thread, the scene needs new blood, and he's right, but it's not going to happen, because it would need to be a positive environment for them to want to be part of it. Until the negative element retires to their tea dances they're going to stay away.

I bet its the same, had the Workies (Workingmens & Social Club) on a Thursday, club next to Foxes Biscuits on Friday, Saturday the Ambulance hall then on to the Casino this was all in one small town up north.

Agree, we had thursday, Friday, sat, Sunday events back then....Grantham Football Club, Newark Bowling Green, Brit Club club, Wigan and Palais, ALL in a week sometimes.

Hmm. I reckon most of the exciting new records I've heard in the last few years have been played by "recognised DJs". In fact you could say "big name" DJs. And mainly at nighters.

Get out more! And cover a wider range of venues!

I organise one gig a year. I am not the promoter, there is no promotion, it's simply a gathering of like minded people playing their collections and if folks wanna come join us they are more than welcome and we have a fantastic time together every year. Not all of the people who attend are collectors but it's fair to say that most are. But here's the crux.....I get inundated with people from UK who contact me, explain that they are 'DJ's/Promoters' on the UK Northern Soul scene, most are local 'DJs' who play at their own gigs and their Mates, (some of them actually go on to tell me the history of the UK soul scene ), and offer their services as "DJs". Most play the same records as each other, some play boots.carvers etc and most of us could hear their records without leaving our homes. I explain that the event is a group of long time collectors getting together to share their collections over a weekend, in the sun, with great food, wine, and we dance our asses of for 3 days. Inevitably....VERY FEW of the "DJs" who get in touch, once they realise it's not about names on flyers, or playing the latest Frank Popp gubbins, actually want to join us unless they are 'DJing'. What a farce. But of course......"the only reason they set up their own gigs and DJ at them is they do it for the good of the scene, to hear something different and their passion to share the music with others".

I would venture that in my experience, if a lot of people weren't DJing at their own gigs, they simply wouldn't DJ anywhere else and therefore their interest/involvement with the music would peter out.

I have no axe to grind with 'DJs", some of my close friends are "DJs". It's entirely up to each individual to enjoy the music exactly how they feel it's right for them. How people enjoy their involvement in the soul 'scene' is completely their perogative. But in answer to Des' original question I would answer yes.

I think more and more people are driven by attempting to get that 15 minutes of fame by standing behind a set of Technics and not by a love of the music and a passion to enjoy it with like minded people. That's why our particular weekender "DJs" are by invitation only, all attend as listeners first, DJs second and do so at their own expense. Unique? Maybe not, but it certainly lays a foundation for an enjoyable bootleg/pressing/carver free weekend that usually throws up a few 45s that we start chasing the minute the gig ends.

This years "DJ's" from UK include Dave Greet, Dave Ferguson, Howard Griffin, Alan Pollard, Karl Heard, Russ Vickers, and Chris Dalton. You won't see their names on flyers every weekend at local "dos", or indeed at many national events, but I think it's fair to say that they reflect the ethos of what is best about both the collecting scene and the passion that comes with it when asked to 'DJ'.

I don't really understasnd why my life story has anything to do with a theoretical question. The question I originally asked is not aimed at those who want to D.J. but haven't "made it" but EVERYBODY who has that urge to D.J. and at what degree is that urge detrimental to the scene? If I'd have said it was a Mate that gave me a "spot" how does that relate to the question. If you want further clarification of why I've been asked to D.J. wait until you see my name on a flyer and ask the promoter, coz I'm F***ed if I know!

As far as i'm aware the only real "true"soul fans these days are mostly the one's with the records.

By that i mean the people who really care passionatly about the scene , not the people who go out on a Friday or Saturday night to a so-called soul event,where the order of the night is to have a natter ,a good drink ,then a bit boogie ,then tittle off home and forget all about it till next month.

And then do it all over again! Now that's "ground hog" in my book.

So called wannabe dj's imho opinion are, from my experience,people who go to the bother of spending hard earned cash on records ,in the hope of bringing something different to the table and sharing their finds with like minded soul fans.

The biggest problem i find is people who run venues who think or thought there was money to be made .These are the people who don't care what medium the music come in ,as long as it's well known and fills the floor.The theory is not so much "Northern soul is a dance scene" rather than the more idiots i can convince that this is "Northern soul",the more money i get at the end of the night!

Maybe this is why collectors become wannabe dj's ,because theyre sick of crap venues and just wanna be somewhere ,no matter how big,with like minded people!

i for one have the utmost respect for most of the well known dj's ,who are as passionate today as they were all them yrs back,rather than the ones ,who have made a reputation and just play safe boring music all night,take the big payment and drift off ,straight after their mediocre set!

One last thing ,a real soul fan would never approach a dj,during his/her set and tell them they are crap.

Just to reclarify, and with all due respect Nev, the first question i.e. "Calling All Promoters" specifically asked if promoters had had a good night on a specific, busy Saturday, with some interesting replies, and also after some off site feedback I'm pretty convinced that some very worthy events did lose numbers due to a bit of "congestion". This is a follow on question, asking whether there is an obsession with "D.J.'ing" on the scene that in cases can be detrimental to the scene itself . However, although i may agree to disagree with you that this is not the same question as before, I did agree with your further points!!

JUST BEEN READING a lookback thread about a local venue to me and all the guest dj's thanked all and sundry for going to said venue and how good said venue is,and how they hope it remains good...........but none of THESE FELLAS GO TO SAID VENUE UNLESS THEY'RE BLOODY DJING......and it's no f**king good either posting up "have a great night lads,for anyone who ain't been this is a great club".and then settle down to watch corrie...this is the scenes problem in a nut shell

I have been on the scene since 1967 and still have the same vest from Wigan with sweat stains from the last night there.... I can bring our Vera and maybe a couple more people if you can stick some names on my guest list...

I have also done nights at the talc and towel, a very well loved chain pub that promotes real soul music..

Make sure the mic is good quality, i like to give the bastard some hammer after a few pints and some of the other...

Can also bring you my resident djs with over 400 years of soul life between them.. No need for hotel for this lot, the only sleep Wednesdays after Corrie and then its the weekend again...

As a dj team we go under the name of nine times out of 10... That means we get the crowd moist with our classics 9 times out of ten, ha ha ha.... You could give us a block booking for the next few years if you want, we are really in demand and looking to other well established weekenders too..

Well, firstly Andy, its a reflection of your mighty ego that you feel im referring to you. Ive actulally been taken off far better venues than your own (think its known as little caesar syndrome and i dont mean a soul artist !). Secondly, ill tell you now 'F--k off', there you go . Its a sad reflection of your absolute lack of musical interest that you havent got a clue what has been and is being played at your venue! BUT, I have been stood next to you when youve played 'Love slipped through my fingers' on a boot! With the excuse that you broke your original.

Anyway, if you keep thinking people are talking about you and you steam in with your incredible lack of articulacy and thought, you may well get more replys like this one. Good luck with the 'Greatest night on earth'. I think we ALL remain eternally grateful to you and await a time when we can all bask in the sunlight of your self reflective soul. There is too much me, me, and me on this site!!! And most off it is of childish and pathetic behaviour from people who have too much time on their hands and just want to cause shite!!!!!

It's the music that counts and I've loved and lived it for 34 years now. Why cant people keep their soul-destroying opinions to themselves as I for one am sick to the back teeth of hearing them on this site!!!!! Constructive criticism yes. Bullshiting and backstabbing please keep to yourselves. I normally bite my tongue to stop myself posting on here to some of the absolute garbage that some people post, but things are getting well out of hand so decided to put in my two peneth. No one need answer to this, as I don't really give a shite if you do or don't agree and I certainly won't be posting or reading anything else on here again!!!!!!!!

I want to enjoy the rest of my life and will do by going out every week and listening to records sung by brilliant, talented black musicians and singers giving their all. With friends who I respect for their love and passion for this music and their company I enjoy being in!!!! That's why I love it so much!!!!!

I'm answering because I do "give a sh*te".... the music "does" count.... however many years are behind people.... but the simple answer is.... read what you "like" to read.... ignore what what you "dislike" on here.... perhaps "too simple" sometimes for most of us....

But if you "read" summat you "don't like or disagree with".... whose fault is that.... I'd say "yours" for clicking and reading such threads....

Suggest ignore such threads then you don't have to "throw your two penneth in" and then finish by saying "not posting, not reading anymore"....

You wouldn't have stated your "sick of reading such and such" and "I'm outa here" without "clicking to read what you don't like" in the first place....

Is the pursuit of "D.J.'ing" on the "Northern Soul" scene the root of all our problems - clashing, soaring prices of "in demand" records, venue overload,local feuds.

Des Parker hi des , would like to mention , to many promoters greedy ones at that? not helping to bring new and better djs with personality thru , reason being is that they re not well known from the old days , so what most of em were pants then and still are now ? to many so called top promoters djs etc who cant srop slaggin each other off , tryin to tell u that u cant put a night on cause its to close to theres, breakin a new tune in or re spinning an old classic again to push up prices so high its not possible for most people to buy original records, what we have is a precious gift in soul music and human life lets treat both with respect before its to late ktf

I know we all like a full dancefloor, a packed venue...but there is a certain beauty to be held in under attended (???) events, the sparsity can affect a much more intimate atmosphere for the attendees.
