Brenda Holloway 'Here are the pieces of my broken heart' Acetate
Andy Rix replied to Mace's topic in All About the SOUL
That is a real Motown acetate ... MV inked on the label is Micky Valvano ... it appears he was trawling tapes to listen to in case there was something of interest .. so acetates were cut for him to do that Andy -
He gave us more than we realise ... a sad loss indeed Andy
-
Such sad news ... Rob, Dave Brown & I spent a few hours with him one afternoon in the Philadelphia International Studios ... he certainly was a character May he rest in peace Andy

The Matadors - Say Yes Baby - Chavis 1034 Asking £550 for this slab of solid soul from Wilmington, Delaware ... price reduced ... clearly I was on the high side and happy to discuss if interested Written by Terry Lee & Ron Leatherbury, whose mother recalled that "all the young men, in the Matadors, have passed away including my son Ronny, except two young men and only one on the recording, they are Monroe Tucker (second tenor) and Umar Hassan El (lead ) ... the other group members, all deceased now, were: Lonny Wise (lead ) Robert Moxley (1st tenor) Ronald Leatherbury (baritone) and Phillip Thomas (bass)" Vinyl is close to M- ... a mark on label as pictured The blip on the MP3 at circa 1.50 is not on the 45 .. it's my PC playing up Payment & postage can be sorted but it will be what is expected and usual no hassle guarantee Please PM and I'll respond ASAP Andy Say Yes Baby - DUB.mp3

Brenda Holloway 'Here are the pieces of my broken heart' Acetate
Andy Rix replied to Mace's topic in All About the SOUL
Good find ... I'm sure Robb K will be excited to see these given they nearly all featured on his infamous tapes way back when. having listened to the sound clip I can tell it is the same acetate that Robb had access to ... The surface noise gives it away .., it is a beautiful vocal performance I've always loved the Brenda version and when I asked her about it she did say that she was rather upset that Gladys got to record it 'properly' I wonder who wrote the artist names on the labels ? Up for offers .. Shirley Edwards - Dream My Heart - Shrine 110 This copy came from Harry Bass, who co-wrote & produced it, and he obviously played it a lot as the vinyl has suffered as a result That aside it's a nice piece that rarely comes to the market these days You can listen to the track, recorded direct from the 45, and view the scan to consider how you would grade it Obviously I'm not looking for a 'mint' book price offer ... but as I'm not sure what to set sale it at thought it best to go via the offers route I'll keep this open until 21.00 Monday 16th October .. I reserve the right to sell early ... or not at all .. If interested PM me and I will keep in touch ... I'm not on here all day, infact some days I don't get the time to check in so please be patient Postage & payment can be sorted out later on Thanks for looking Andy 01 - Shirley Edwards.mp3

Hi Chalky I think James T was in the Mellow Fellows ... but I'd need to go through my stuff again to pin down the ebb and flow of who was in what group & when And just to clarify that the photo is of the 'teenagers' who were the band on the recording Andy- 12 comments

50 years ago today four guys drove from Wilmington, Delaware, to Frank Virtue’s studio located on 1618 N. Broad St, Philadelphia to record their debut single as the Mello Souls. Silas, Fisher, James T and Randy were accompanied by their manager Mr Marshall and George Lewis, who co-wrote both of the songs. A group of local teenagers, Keith, Kenny, Larry, Johnny and Frank provided the music. ‘I Got My Pride’, which featured Silas on lead, was cut in one take and this was the song that was pushed as the A side. ‘We Can Make It’, with Fisher on lead and James T providing the response vocal, took 3 takes as Mr Marshall couldn’t quite synchronise his tambourine with Keith’s guitar intro; an intro that he acknowledges was inspired by ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’ which had been released five months previously by The Supremes Despite local promotion and live shows the record didn’t make the impact that had been hoped for. The disappointment felt by the group was further compounded by a failed audition at Motown and as a result they simply dissolved. For us the rest as they say is history Andy

No help on the question but as random information Dale Warren told me that the inspiration for calling the record label Sidra was because the guy who financed it ... Can't recall the exact details just now ... Had an affinity with the Meditteranian sea so named the label after the Gulf of Sidra ..... He said it created some interest with the FBI given its proximity to Libya .... To be honest you couldn't make it up ... I actually thought he was joking but apparently not Andy

Good shout ... couldn't see the Carol King book in there Andy

You did him the alternate version with the funny guitar in the break .... I don't think that version has ever been released ... Sound quality was a bit low-fi Andy -

Couple of pics of Duke Browner ...solo one is when he was 22 & the other with his wife, Jeanette, and son Barney Jr
-
I contacted the son of Duke Browner today about the Gucci promo ...... I've tried to talk to him for a number of years about collecting royalties but he does not seem interested. he is very polite but that's as far as it goes. he said he has no 45s and no master tapes I will keep on trying to touch base with him if only to see that Duke's wife gets some money Andy
