what is the oldest (by first written date) side on an NS release
When I bought a boot of the Sherrys my and was plying it in my bedroom whilst coming in to land my mum bounced in saying 'ooh I remeber this from tye war'... Another one was Goodnight Irene. Hate the record, but as biggies go how about Can't Help Loving Dat Man? It's from Porgy & Bess - Gershwin 1935. Dx

new releases - money machines?
Hasn't this gone on since the absolute dawn of Northern Soul with Clifford Curry be flogged for serious cash covered up coz you could it was still available on general release on Pama? Certainly in years gone by I've bought things like Larry Wedgeworth for what at the time was pretty serious money with the details scratched off because it was still available on general release in the States. At the end of the day as has often been said - a record is only worth its original sales value - all the extra is paying someone else to have the nowse to track it down (or indeed buy it when it was still easy to get) so you don't have to. Dx

Blue-eyed Soul?
My understanding was that it was some kind of Block project - at least my old copy (bought from Gene Robertson and flogged to Mark Sargeant) came with a sheet with information on everyone involved. What killed it for me was that horrible slow break at the end - that drover me to sell it in the end. Dx

Blue-eyed Soul?
Aren't we into the realms of appalling pop-sh*te that we should be ashamed was ever played rather than 'blue eyed soul' here?
-

What reationship does the northern soul scene have with soul?
At its best Northern is a perfect storm of soulfulness, danceability, stunning performance, backing and production - that 'true' northern ideal is a very rare thing IMO. What's played at ALLNIGHTERS though varies wildly around that ideal; from pop sh*te to jump blues garbage, through excessively poppy motown, disco and garage psyche to inappropriately slow tempo deep-ish soul stuff - a broad church of secondary shades of the true god ; ) Dx

John Peel's unknown soul record from 1975?
Re-him 'hating' soul music. Wasn't Sandie Sheldon supposed to have come out of his collection????? Dx

Is there an appetite for something different?
Sorry without any qualification this is a silly question.

when does a ''wanna be'' DJ become a DJ?
Yes - as we used to tell one lad all the time - if you can't afford to pay for the big rarities and current in-demanders you need to make your own niche playing less obvious (and less costly) sounds otherwise you're just another soundalike also-ran (and there are FAR too many of them already)... And at the end of the day the DJs that are really respected by those who are not simply nostalgia zombies are those who have a musical personality and spin sounds that mark them out as different. Dx

when does a ''wanna be'' DJ become a DJ?
I think 'wannabe DJ' is a tag largely used by people who've been trudging round the scene for years without actually breaking through in a big way themselves (usually because they aren't actually very good DJs themselves) and by those with a great deal of money who think their cheque book defines their talent as a DJ trying to deride people they look down on basically coz they're not rich... REAL DJing is about reading and answering the floor, understanding how to structure a spot properly, saying 'you like that one you know? NOW listen to this one that's even better that you don't'... It SHOULDN'T be a pissing contest over hackneyed crap that's impressive simply because it's expensive - frankly there are numerous records that nobody would give a second hearing to if they weren't four figure sounds. Dx

Lou Courtney - Let Me Be The One???
And mine - perhaps THE favourite. Though I DO love Miss LL (a real record for when you're massively over-cooked) - one I won't sell. Anyone know where it was first played - the boss couldn't remember. Dx
-
Lou Courtney - Let Me Be The One???
Karl Evans is Arin Demain apparently. Dx
-
l'Ambassador - Bradford
Reckon it's about 3 weeks before an original venue revival night... No bad thing though. Dx
-
Wigan Burns, Piano remains
It looks pretty obviously like a still from a TV screen so may well have been from an Imber World News report. Dx
-
Ian Levine lookalike bootlegs
They should be pretty obvious to anyone used to handling original 45s - there are more than this. Dx
-
Ian Levine produced tracks; Your Fave
Barbara Pennington is head and shoulders above the rest IMO. Dx
