  3. I remember one night we were on our way and couldn't find the place. We were all well blocked and must have passed this police sergeant three times who was standing on the corner of a street and looking suspicious at us.As we were passing the local police station. Psyco (Chris Jenkinson) who was in the car with us suddenly said "stop the car and i'll go into the station and ask the old bill the way." Talk about bottle, we were amazed at Chris.Needless to say he came out with directions and as they say a good night was had by all. One record always sticks in my mind from Clifton hall,I think it was a Searling cover up,Over the top by Roy Dawson covered up as the Chicago gangsters. Regards Fred
  4. Rudy's Scarborough, brings back memories, some good and some not so good.Sadly the manager John Rona (from Barnsley ) got kicked to death in an alley near to the club. And I think the murder was never solved. On the pleasent and funny side Bub was a regular DJ at the club on bank holidays and was always up for a laugh, on one occasion I remember Bub setting off a fire extinguisher and covered a bouncers head with foam to which Bub was barred from the club. All of us were just rolling about on the floor laughing! Regards Fred.
  5. Just shows the bbc are out of touch with their listeners, or do they really care? the fact that many people signed the petition, seemed to change bbc's decision makers mind and to put on special one offs with Brian, only seems to add insult to injury.Sadly it's the usual case of after the horse has bolted.Only to read later that Tony Blackburn will be presenting future shows from 6.00am like someone has said above if it wasnt for bbc I player I just wonder how many regular listeners would tune in at all Regards Fred.

  9. I remember when I was a teenager and used to frequent a coffee bar in Huddersfield, namely Studio 58 on new street where a lot of the Huddersfield "wheel" crowd used to go they had lots a tasty "wheel soul sounds" on the juke box, one notable record which immediately comes to mind was "On Broadway " by the Drifters. Studio 58 was the place to be and be seen where the Huddersfield "In crowd" were always there and where us young uns would like to be in and amongst them.People I can remember from those times were:- Ralph Senior,Frankie Carr, "Cobber" whose real name was Ian Hicks and his mate Keith Nestor, Pip,Mick Haigh, (mosh) Lesley Brown, Andy Crossley and Dave Clegg,I,'m sure i've missed a lot off but we're talking many years ago. Regards Fred Ward

  17. Does it really matter which record was played first, when and where, surely the fact that they were played and we were and are privileged to hear such great music is the one thing we all agree on.Two of my favourite sounds were played there, in no order:- Johnny Sayles:- I can't get enough of your love and Earl Jackson:- Soul Self Satisfaction. Regards Fred.
  18. On Saturday the 18th of June 2016 my wife and I had the pleasure to be at Tommy Hunts 83rd birthday. We arrived at the Lion public house in Castleford ,which to locals is known as a bikers pub and yes there were motorbikes parked outside with bikers having a beer and generally chatting. We went inside and ordered some drinks at the bar. The crowd were a mixed bag consisting of "soulies",rockers and others of all ages from the very young to I would say 60's.The compare went on to the stage to announce that Tommy would be on stage at 9.30pm. It wasn't long before Tommy was announced and he proceeded to step on to the stage and was greeted with a huge round of applause. Tommy then thanked everybody from the bottom of his heart for coming to celebrate his 83rd birthday with him. He went on to tell everyone how he started singing and the groups he was in and his involvement in the music industry. He said he was going to sing some songs that were favourites on the Northern scene and said to the sound man are you ready to roll with the first song .Now you would be forgiven to think that at 83 an artist would find it hard to hit the notes and struggle to sing with the years taking their toll. But in the case of Tommy you would be very wrong. He then went into a fantastic rendition of "cracking up over you" which he sang with passion and perfect deliverance. This shone through and the crowd responded with a massive round of applause. His next song was the one for which he is probably best known "Loving on the losing side", which again was delivered passionately and with such professionalism. Tommy's third song was called "Soul In the Sun" liked by some but not by others, which is the classic Willie Mitchell "The Champion" to which Tommy had written words to. He sang it with strong vocals and perfect tone the crowds response was to dance along in front of the stage generating an atmosphere which bounced over to Tommy and back to the crowd. Not once did Tommy falter with the words and notes, ending with a rapturous applause. It was now time for a break and a perfect opportunity for Tommy's daughter to present him with a fully decorated birthday cake complete with miniature roman candle fireworks in full flow. He sat down and posed with the crowd for photographs and then announced that he would be back on stage later on,it was now 11.30pm and we had to leave due to commitments as we had to be up early the next day.I'm sure Tommy would have kept the crowd entertained until the early hours of Sunday. If you ever get the chance to see Tommy perform don't pass up on the opportunity as you will definitely not be disappointed. All the best Fred Ward
  19. Sometimes it depends on what you are viewing youtube on, as you'll find a difference sometimes when viewing on a pc, phone or tablet. Quite often you'll see a record on one day only to find another day it will have been removed due to copyright infringement. Just had a look on youtube and as said previously there are a few on with the oldest being 7 years ago. Regards Fred.

  24. When in was a young lad my father's best friend who years before were in the army together, used to come up to Yorkshire from South Wales to visit us,I remember he was a rep for Philips records, and drove a Humber Sceptre which then was a nice car.One year he was coming up and I was going back down with him to stop for a few days, he arrived in a new car a Humber Super Snipe which was dead smart.I remember us travelling down when he said I'll put some music on and would you reach behind my seat and get that small box of records. He told me what record to pick out and said pop it in the slot of the record player attached to the underside of the dash.I Was amazed at this record player when it played not once did it jump when travelling over bumps and it would play the other side of the record if you wanted it to.I remember it was made by Philips played good and sounded clear.I've not seen one since and would say at the time it would be the early to mid 60's It must have been state of the art then.I sincerely hope you manage to find one and get it up and running in your car.Can you imagine playing real vinyl in your car, a must for "Soulies". It will be interesting to see how you get on,who knows you might start a trend that brings back the in-car record player!. All the best Fred Ward.
