  1. The public reaction and the box office opening for the film obviously has the industry agog ... the parallels with what happened in the early 70s on the UK pop charts are uncanny ... when all of a sudden years old tracks by The Tams and Archie Bell and the Drells started shooting up the charts from out of nowhere.
  2. Also a great opportunity for Universal to cash in by putting together a clever video of Shirley Ellis' "Soul Time" and releasing it as a single/download and see it rocket up the pop singles charts in time for X Mas ...
  3. Excuse my ignorance regarding the marketing, promotion and economics of motion pictures in this day and age , but is it not conceivable that having seen the extraordinary intial reaction by the general public and media to the film - and notwithstanding the immediate release on DVD - the distributors may actually decide in the coming days or weeks to give the film a full general cinematic release on as many screens as possible in the UK ? In the same way that they normally would for a major US big budget film ? In other words re-promote and re-release it on a whole different level ?
  4. The National Australian Northern Soul Weekender, now in its 17th year, is taking place this weekend 24/ 25/ 26 October 2014. https://www.facebook.com/events/635397959859765/801764159889810/?notif_t=plan_mall_activity Any soul source members from the UK going ? Or already on their way ?
  5. Yes, but the northern scene is just powering on in Australia... https://www.theguardian.com/music/australia-culture-blog/2014/oct/18/northern-soul-down-under-australia
  6. All the interest in the film seems to have inspired this story in the Guardian about the Australian Northern Soul scene: https://www.theguardian.com/music/australia-culture-blog/2014/oct/18/northern-soul-down-under-australia?commentpage=1#start-of-comments
  7. According to the Time Out article , regarding Frank Wilson, "only 250 copies of the 45 were ever pressed" "What happened to the music? Thanks to the competing efforts of a handful of DJs — each unearthing obscure soul stompers to keep their dancefloors fresh — the northern soul scene excavated a treasure chest of classic records. Some, like Gloria Jones’s ‘Tainted Love’ or Chuck Wood’s ‘Seven Days Too Long’, became well known after being covered by Soft Cell and Dexys Midnight Runners respectively. Others, like ‘Do I Love You’ by Frank Wilson were saved from total obscurity (only 250 copies of the 45 were ever pressed) to reach the giddy heights of being featured in a KFC advert."

Phil, were you one of the original DJs at the original Wheel ?
  9. Two different issues of this , and with different running times.
  10. The O'Jays doing a version of Jerry Butler ?! Don't think so !
  11. Surely Brian Phillips who is on here would be able to confirm whether it was a Wheel record ?
  12. Surely these artists continue to perform of their own free will ? No one is forcing them to get up there. Many have no alternative but to keep performing simply to make ends meet .
  13. Here's the best way to own it ... an Aussie RCA demo
  14. As a general proposition, you're absolutely correct. It's a joke that that the " EX " grade is even a part of the UK system ... not to mention the fact that many UK soul sellers use as their lowest grade "VG" when in fact they should be grading such records as merely Fair or Poor ! And the multiple ++++++++ plusses phenomenon seems to be particularly prevalent with many sellers in the Uk too ....
  15. Ady deserves the recognition if for no other reason that no one has been more responsible for introducing northern soul to the world than Ady and Kent Records. In an age when there was no internet, no youtube and no down loads those first two Kent LPs - For Dancers Only and For Dancers Also - and the many that followed have proven to be absolutely pivotal moments in northern soul history. Several generations of soul people from Sweden to Germany to Japan to Australia to the US and many other countries all around the world, let alone the UK, will readily tell you without hesitation that their introduction and lifelong love affair with rare soul music was established via those Kent LPs. In fact it would be fair to say to say that without Ady's contribution, northern soul today would most likely still be nothing more than a curious local movement little known outside the UK.
  16. There is of course this famous photo of Dave Godin and Ian Levine outside the Mecca from 1971 which uses the term " Rare Soul '71 " in the background advertisement.
  17. Great to see the Queen at any time and she looks to be in better health than she has been in recent years. However judging from that performance on the Letterman show, she is really having trouble reaching those high notes that she so easily managed in her prime. Understandable at 72 years of age ... Would still love to see her live any time, any place though. What a shame that her fear of flying has prevented her from performing outside the US for decades ...

  19. US or UK prices here ?
  20. It is part of soul folklore that Dave Godin was the first to coin the term "northern soul" but ... was he really the first ? Nowhere in this article is the phrase "northern soul" used by Dave, it is only the headline which states "Up-North Soul Groove". And it's not unreasonable to suggest that editor John Abbey may well have formulated that headline himself , not Dave ? Having looked closely at Dave's other Blues & Soul pieces of the time , he didn't use the term "northern soul" in that famous report on his first trip to the Wheel either. Not doubting for one moment Dave Godin's great legacy to soul music but just trying to establish the precise facts. Anyone ?
