"Ain't no sunshine "/ "Harlem " One of the best double siders EVER . "Harlem " for me is the Number one Blaxploitation/ Northern track . Played "Grandmas hands " live at Carnegie hall ( maxi single )very loud for some reason just two days ago . R.I.P . Bill .

Maybe the 900 doomed copies were rescued somewhere between the trunk and the crusher/remelter ? Several copies of this were available in the record bar at Wigan in the summer of 1980 for £ 25.00. A big play for Rushbrooke at the time .

A member on here called "Donkit" regularly advertises in the miscelaneous sales section that he has stylus/cartridges for sale at reasonable prices ... maybe p.m him , see if he has any ?

Do you need Cartridges as well , or just the stylus ? The cartridge should dictate the type of stylus you are after , if you need both , Concord or Shure brands would both work well.
  7. Remember those times well , it was a kind of third faction at Wigan .Tim Finch mentions it in the Northern soul book , says something like the newies crowd , the mods and us. don't remember any real hostility towards them other that the label " plastic mod" being used . My overall impression was that the place was used as a kind of backdrop to their Quadrophenia fantasy , gangs of guys huddled together in parkas , just thrilled to bits to be there, many slumped over tables by 3am ,just clogged the place up really . Of course some of this crew stuck around , I would imagine the vast majority became New Romantics casuals or whatever by 1981 . Even back then I got a sense that the real northern crowd at this point were the true descendants of the early sixties mods and these 79 guys were little more than these kids Around town today with keep the faith bags and t shirts , after all to be accepted on the scene in the seventies took a lot more than a trip to the tailors . Loved the film by the way , 40 years ago , wow .

Think maybe the Epic release was to cash in on Donnie Elberts popularity around this time, all his 45s seemed to have different labels , Jay Boy , London , Avco , Mojo etc , i know his Jay Boy 45 was from 66 , maybe if he was living over here and doing shows , this built up the interest/enthusiasm . Am i the only one on here that is not altogether happy/ comfortable with his name ? cant understand why really , am fine with Donnie Hathaway .

  18. As was mentioned earlier , Greenpoint in Brooklyn is a place several record shops either sprung up or re located a few years ago , come out of the subway at Manhattan Ave , you have " The Thing "( massive cellar in thrift store full of mainly albums and 12s ) .Not too far across the road . not sure if " The Record Grouch " is still on Manhattan Ave . Running parrallel , but behind the main street , you have a road that has " Academy records annexe" , and if you carry on further up for about ten minutes , you will come to "Co-op 84 records ". ( Permanent records used to be on this road but had moved to Park Slope Brooklyn a couple of years ago ) On the way back from co op 84 , get back onto Manhattan Ave until you get to Calyer street , this is where you will find " Captured Tracks records "( Hipster vibe , plenty of soul albums and 45s ) Spent time in New york regularly for years until recently and always found this to be a fruitful circuit . The shops did seem to move , open and close a lot though , it was a fast changing scene .Think Greenpoint became the place where they set up shop after Williamsburg became to expensive .

" Job Opening " and " Dr Truelove " both have some fantastic lines, couldnt pick a favourite
  20. Derek Howes record bar at the top of the stairs came immediately to mind before I started reading the comments ,. Couple of purchases from there mid seventies , Marjorie Black ,"One more hurt ", Sue orig 0.85p . Edwin Starr " You're my Mellow "Ric tic orig ,£ 3.00 . Not really bothered if Hmv closes to be honest , not bought anything in there for decades . In the words of the only HMV UK demo I possess "Its alright ". What is mildly concerning is I thought "Fopp" was also owned by HMV . I do call in there now and then , plenty of bargain books ,only last week the Detriot 67 was on sale for £3.00 or two for £5.00 (paperback ) Would be a pity if this place folds as well , I did hear it was mainly a overstock outlet for HMV.
  21. Leaning more and more to this kind of sound , previews ( the ones i dont already know) sound fantastic . Will be my first C.D. purchase for a couple of years .
  22. In the seventies I kind of equated people who didnt buy pressings as those who had less passion , Who could resist some of the sounds as they were re pressed ? actually owning a copy of that record you had loved for months sometimes years , the main focus of life bieng to travel miles to hear it and many others, At that point , there were no down loads , c.d.s etc and if you wanted a copy , that was pretty much the only way .They were irresistable ! That has changed today , but still some people still prefer to have a copy on vinyl than on C.D. Also , if we take away those who have NEVER owned a pressing , never played one , never sold one , never lent out an original to be copied , there wouldnt be too many people left , If we then apply the same criteria to the people around in the 70s heyday , I cant think of any . ( they were around no doubt) Several of the main dealers currently have sections for " repros" "represses" or the like and theres not usually much distinction here whether or not they have been legally repressed or not ( in fairness some do state" legit reissue " or similar ) . Ok , Hang me now !
  23. A man of integrity is needed here to sort out this situation , someone beyond reproach , respected by all . Didnt Simon Soussan resurface recently ?
