Alice Clark - What Do We Know?
It simply says that the lack of sales (and I daresay a recording contract) saw her drifting away from the business. Apparently she has not been heard of since her final recordings. Its a bit vague unfortunately but it does look as if she simply took herself out of the music business completely. Pity but not unique in the 60s and 70s, when there were so many great singers making so many great records that not everyone could break through.

Alice Clark - What Do We Know?
The CD is excellent. we had a thread on Mary Gresham a while back and Alice falls into the same category of highly gifted artist who didnt record anywhere near enough, or get the breaks she deserved. 1968-72 with just 15 recordings.......

Ben E King Rip
We've lost some great names over the last few years. Alas Ben is now added to the list. Thanks for the wonderful music Ben, and RIP.

Fabulous....as you say she sure can sing. Great to hear her on material like this. She should do more.

New Or Recent Soul Releases And Cool Official Vids
Talented guy Anthony Hamilton. This is a lovely track. I'd highly recommend two outstanding female singers, Lizz Wright and Ruthie Foster. They dont do dance tracks but they can sing and I'd say are very soulful ladies.

Percy Sledge Rip
Another great from the golden era passes. Percy handled the tender country slanted ballads to a tee. True love travels on a gravel road is a particular favourite but there were so many more.

'send Him Back' On Radio 2 Drivetime
I remember Liza hosting the afternoon show on R2 with Mark Radcliffe many years ago (filling in for the cretinous Steve Wright) and it was cracking fun. The music was generally tripe but occasionally they would play something good which they would obviously enjoy. Surprised they weren't teamed up for a regular show. They definitely had something.

Mary Gresham Any Info
From the CD and for me one of the standout tracks.

Mary Gresham Any Info
i'm looking at the inlay card for The Voice from the Shadows CD. Born Selma, Alabama August 1943. Went to College, worked as a teacher before going into music. Married Chuck Cooper and worked as a duo. First recorded at Muscle Shoals in 1968. Had 4 sessions in total in MS with various producers with the final one being in 1977 but seemingly no commercial success. Quit music in 1982 but returned a decade or so later to play some local gigs. The CD is a very good collection with some first class material on it. Just another talented artist who never got the breaks, nor the success she deserved. A familiar tale for many Soul singers from the 60s and 70s.

News: George McGregor - Detroit's busiest drummer.
That was a treat. Always good to hear from one of the backroom boys.

Cd Compilations - Your Favourites
The Dave Godin Deep Soul Treasures sets are very fine. Kents Where Country meets Soul series is top notch. The History of Soul series is well worth searching out. And I've enjoyed the recent CD's from Kent featuring the songs of Phillip Mitchell and Sam Dees too. But there has been a lot of very good compilations.

Sax Solos That Give You Chills (With Clips)
Heard The Isley Bros This old heart of mine on the radio at the weekend. Its a glorious record of course and I never tire of that wonderful baritone sax break. About 1'30 into the track

Empty Dancefloor - Dj Reactions
I'm reminded of that brilliant Morecambe & Wise sketch with Andre Previn where Previn says to Eric "You are playing all the wrong notes", to which Eric replied, "I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order" Isn't DJ ing largely about playing all the right records in the right order, with the better ones being more adept at spotting what that is?

Female "big Beat" Ballads - Your Faves?
This is another nice one from Ketty
-
Stick By Me Baby
There might be a very good reason why it wasnt released........ No way a 60's or even 70's recording i would say.

Empty Dancefloor - Dj Reactions
Has to be "Panic and start looking for sure-fire stuff in your box " but without the panic. Berating the audience is not a good idea and bursting into tears is just unseemly.

Vintage Soul Radio Show Sunday 01 March 2005 # 400
