Don't Mess with Syl Johnson

an Interesting article...

http://www.philly.co...yl-Johnson.html

Reading between the lines I guess this affair may now be in the hands of lawyers or heading that way...

clip below..

Chicago soul man Syl Johnson, who was the subject of a massive retrospective box issued by the Numero Group last year, has a beef with fellow Windy City resident Kanye West and his Watch The Throne partner Jay-Z. It seems that last year, West's lawyers and Numero were in negotiations over the use of a sample of Johnson's song "Different Strokes" on "The Joy," a West creation targeted for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
Talks broke down, and the song didn't make the album, but now it's turned up on Watch The Throne, the celebrated collabo by the two hotshot rappers, even though an agreement was never reached.

Esther Gordy Edwards RIP

Just had this sent,

Motown figure Esther Gordy Edwards dies at age 91

By JEFF KAROUB, Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — Esther Gordy Edwards, who helped build Motown Records alongside her brother Berry Gordy Jr. and led efforts to turn its original Detroit headquarters into a museum, has died. She was 91.
Edwards died Wednesday surrounded by family and friends in Detroit, the Motown Historical Museum said in a statement.
Edwards was a Motown executive for nearly three decades, holding numerous leadership positions within the music company whose artists included Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and The Four Tops. Motown Records, which Berry Gordy started with a family loan in 1959, churned out scores of global hits from the building it dubbed "Hitsville, U.S.A." in Detroit. The company moved to Los Angeles in 1972.

NEW YORK (AP) — Nick Ashford, one-half of the legendary Motown songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson that penned elegant, soulful classics for the likes of Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye and funk hits for Chaka Khan and others, died Monday at age 70, his former publicist said.
Ashford, who along with wife Valerie Simpson wrote some of Motown's biggest hits, died in a New York City hospital, said publicist Liz Rosenberg, who was Ashford's longtime friend. He had been suffering from throat cancer and had undergone radiation treatment, she told The Associated Press.

Wilton Allnighter Sept 2nd 2011 cancelled - next one 11th Nov 2011

The Wilton Allnighter scheduled for September 2nd is cancelled.

The next allnighter at the Wilton will be re scheduled for Friday 11th November 2011.

Details and DJ line-up for the November date will be arranged later.

As a suggestion made by many of you, we may have just three or possibly four allnighters next year, provided we are able to continue.

Our 18th Anniversary was a packer - such a great night, THANK YOU!!

But numbers were down again in July.

The earlier start & finish times of 9.00pm - 4.30am adopted in July had a mixed reception, but the majority thought it was a success.

We have said this before - "We just need to balance the books, not make a profit, and the Wilton Allnighters will continue".

Thanks

Jerry Ragovoy Has Died

I've just woken up to some very sad news that my Ace colleague Mick Patrick e-mailed to me in the small hours of this morning.

I'm sure that Mick won't mind if I reprint part of his e-mail here:

"I just spoke to (his wife) Bev Ragovoy, who told me that Jerry has died following a massive stroke. He did not suffer, and his twin daughters and Bev were with him.

On Sunday Jerry filmed an interview at the Bottom Line for the documentary film on Bert Berns being made by Bert's son Brett and daughter Cassie. He was taken ill in the taxi back to their hotel and instead went directly to hospital. He went into a coma. His vital signs seemed good, but he died suddenly last night.

The family will be holding a small private funeral, but are planning a bigger memorial service to celebrate Jerry's life, probably in September"...

It's an eternal regret of mine that I had to forego the opprtunity to meet and have lunch with Jerry last Summer, in London, for reasons that I now cannot even remember. Now I shall never get the chance....

He wrote or produced some of the greatest soul records of the 1960s, often both. Our world of music would have been a much lesser place to live without Jerry's massive contribution to it...

...May he truly rest in peace.

sad news indeed

here's a fascinating 1 hr plus interview...

(music: The Moments - Baby I Want You)

"...Morgan State, named them The Moments and took them into a studio, hired some strings from the air force, $25 the lot. We put together this record and we didn't know what to do with it after that. We had an apartment full of records and we couldn't give them away, we passed them onto the DJs and kind of forgot about it. The record surfaced a few years ago on eBay and sold for almost $5.000. There's not too many copies around now, so needless to say, we went through the basement looking for them to find them, but it was a fruitless search. (next slide / plays music, quickly stops) My degree was in engineering, as undergrad, then I went on to get a graduate degree in engineering. I worked on the space program and gave some technical talks in Munich, but all the time playing in bands at weekends, a singing group locally. I was into A.M. radio, things like that. Next. (next slide) I'd moved to New York, Fonce moved to Los Angeles and through different trials and tribulations signed to Motown Records.
This chart you see here is called I Wanna Be Free and if you notice right under it it says Gladys Knight. Well, up on the upper right it says Gladys Knight, but underneath you'll see a subtitle saying I Want You Back. This song was supposed to be cut on Gladys Knight, but the night before Fonce and Freddie were due to cut the song, Berry Gordy phoned up and said: "Forget that, I've got this bunch of kids I want you to cut on and change the lyrics." They were bummed out because they had Gladys Knight and who are these kids? The kids turned out to be Jackson 5 and they changed the title to I Want You Back, so that (points to slide) is the original music that shows it. I don't think Gladys Knight knows that story to this day ......"

Supercorsa Blog 2005-2011

In A Reflective Mood
Posted by Supercorsa, 11 July 2011 ·

Just sitting here on my day off, meant to have been doing some work on the computer, but as always logged onto Soul Source and got distracted.

I've been reading Ian Dewhirst's thread about having enough money to be a top northern dj, mmm interesting.

Let's be honest if money was no object, the majority of people would go and buy whatever their heart desired or dreamt of, wherever that be records, cars, houses, clothes or whatever. As for wiinning the lotto or Euromillions, you'd buy your own venue and wouldn't need to worry about anything at all, you could play your 50k set and pay other dj's to play their 50k sets, it's obvious (or hypothetical). All the thread seems to have done for me is just recycle all the old chestnuts that resurface from time to time, oldies v newies, preplanned set v reading a floor, originals v boots, collectors v dj's

As for money, it's all relative. If you're unemployed or earning £40k+ a year however much you spend on records is purely up to you! Who are we to condemn someone for buying a £5 reissue/boot rather than spending £100+ on the original. Morally for instance, is the person buying a new Kent release of (for arguments sake) The Hesitations - Is This The Way and playing that out rather than the GWP release, not doing more to benefit the Artists/Writers etc., than the person who pays £50 for a secondhand GWP original, which benefits no-one only the seller?

I'm just content to spend a little each month on one or two bits of vinyl, lately it's ranged from the odd recent Kent release to the oldie that I've always liked or even Mary Wells Sounds Superb LP from the local car boot sale. My only gripe is that I buy on payday (as impatience or bills mean I can't delay), then 2 days later there's a list on here containing something else I would have preferred to buy!

PS Still not missing going out.

Apathy Or Priorities?
Posted by Supercorsa, 16 February 2011 ·

I have not been out to a soul event since the 100 Club anniversary last year. The less I go out the less I want to. Don't get me wrong I do enjoy attending events, just not the travelling to and from them. Take the 100 Club for instance, I love just listening to the music (as I'm not a dancer) and trawlling through all the record boxes, but driving there drove me mad. It was a Saturday evening and the traffic seemed like rush hour! I have to drive, unfortunately haven't got the stamina to go all night and I swear I will never go on a night bus again, not that they go near to where I live anyway.

Also I get 2 weekends off in 4, so spending time together as a whole family is important to me. I didn't realise how important this was to me until recently, when a work friend became a murder victim, leaving behind his kids. A man who was always cheerful, pleasant, decent, well loved, also just a few months older than myself. So now my priorities have changed, my family is coming before my own enjoyment. And you know what? I seem to be enjoying my life more as a result, I just wish my friend was still here to be able to enjoy his.

Rest In Peace Dainsley.

It's Nice Inside, Why Go Out?
Posted by Supercorsa, 09 June 2010

I've recently been reading some posts and been thinking to myself, glad I don't get out much.

There seems to be a lot of doom and gloom merchants about at the moment. Whoa is me, all do's are crap, how much longer can the scene go on for, all dj's are not playing what I want to hear, all dj's are ignoring my requests, etc., etc., For fooks sake just enjoy yourselves, too many people worry about what others are doing. Also what's with all the implied terms, if you've an issue with a venue, promoter, dj, whatever or whoever, then why not just name them? Otherwise it makes the whole point, well....pointless really.

As for myself, the longer it goes on that I don't attend anywhere, the less I miss going out. I'm quite happy to sit at home and pick up one or two records a month to enjoy indoors. I'm not a dancer, I don't drink, petrols not cheap and as I'd be attending on my own I tend to stay indoors with the family instead. Also the money I save on not going out I can spend on records. I sometimes wonder how many more like me are out there. The only time I tend to go anywhere now is if friends(who are not on the scene) want to attend anywhere.

Whilst I'm on the subject of record buying, I'd just like to recommend some of the sellers on here that I've bought from this year... Pete S, kjw, bitchdj, Chris Anderton, 45cellar and others in the past amongst them Mark Bicknell, Godzilla, Darcyboy, Pikeys Dog, In Town Mikey, Bearsy, Donkit, Headsy. Apologies if I've missed any off .

One last thing. Can dj's, that includes the ones who wish to either educate or entertain , can you please use the playlists forum more (you'll find it in the lookbacks forum), thanks

Feeling Somewhat Indifferent.
Posted by Supercorsa, 16 February 2010 ·

Sitting here feeling a bit cheesed off. Suppose I'm just feeling abit down really, not that I've got reason to be, just bored .

Anyway I just want to post up this request/greivance. Why aren't more playlists posted up in lookbacks? I know some people are of the impression that others should attend venues to hear what is played, but it's not always possible for some to attend events each week. In my case I probably get out about half a dozen times a year to soul do's, so I usually go to places I know. However just occasionally I'd like to attend somewhere new, but this is made somewhat difficult when I'm not sure of what to expect. I don't mean I only like to hear what I know, more what type of sounds are played, 60's, 70's, RnB, etc., So when there's no playlists to get an inkling to what's played at certain venues, it makes making a decision of where to attend that bit more difficult. Nothing worse than a thread talking up an event with 50+ posts before it and just half a dozen in lookbacks after an event (& then no playlists)!

So to finish, I know it isn't always possible to post up playlists, but everynow and again wouldn't go amiss . Thanks.

The Receiving Of Records And The Joy It Brings!
Posted by Supercorsa, 08 January 2010 ·

I was pleasantly surprised this morning to get a visit from the postman (sent out a van, no other post for the rest of the street ). He presented me with a parcel containing 3 round shiny black things! How exciting to be opening something that you want, rather than the socks or other usual christmas fare that you may have received a week or two ago.
Within the parcel were 3 records, that cost me about half of what just one of them would've cost me from a well known dealers site. Just had to play them all twice (whilst dancing around the living room in my dressing gown and slippers ), because I couldn't believe the bargain that I felt I'd got. Anyway, I'm now in such a good mood, I'm even willing to venture out and go shopping with the wife!

I'd just like to thank Chris Anderton, for the records . The Royal Mail for such an excellent service, especially considering the weather the country is currently experiencing.

Cheesed Off
Posted by Supercorsa, 01 June 2009

Sitting here on a nice warm day a bit cheesed off.

I've had a nice weekend off work. Had a pleasant day out with the family on Friday, then spent the weekend at the in-laws. Saturday night attended Soulfusion in Gloucester with family & friends.

Return home to find my daughters had friends around whilst we were away. They've made a mess and eaten all the food in the fridge! So as a result, the wife has been complaining about it all through the night and morning before going to work. This hasn't helped my mood as I've got to go to work this afternoon, hate going to work at the best of times, let alone when it's sunny out!

Anyway I digress, the postman has been and left me a recent vinyl purchase off Ebay. Now I don't spend a great deal on individual records, so I tend to be a bit selective so to speak. Anyway I had bought a copy of Jo Armsteads - I Feel An Urge Coming On, nothing terribly expensive or rare. On the listing it stated ZTSC stamped, no mention of it being a boot, so I took a chance. Upon opening checked deadwax only to discover indeed it is stamped, but not an original one. It's a boot , what makes matters worse is that the listing quite clearly states will not accept returns.

So now I am really cheesed off and definately don't want to go to work this afternoon .

Just A Quick Update
Posted by Supercorsa, 22 January 2009

Didn't realise it had been so long since I posted anything in my blog.

I think I'm suffering even more than normal due to lack of funds. I was planning on attending Farnborough this weekend, but dunno if I can afford it. This week the wifes car and mine has (or is going to) cost us in the region of £200 - £250! Firstly the wife's car needed a new tyre - £40, then we discovered the MOT was due to expire - another £55. Whilst doing the MOT we found out need a section of the exhaust replacing - £70. On top of this whilst travelling to Gloucester last Saturday a stone thrown up by a lorry cracked my windscreen, cost me an excess of £60 (lucky I was insured fitters said with new trims could've been looking towards £500). So automobiles have left the old wallet a bit empty .

Still at least I managed to get out last weekend whilst staying in Gloucester. I managed to get along to Soulfusions 3rd anniversary do with my brother-in-law. I thought the venue was great, 3 rooms, great bar and just far enough off the beaten track so as not to attract any passing pissheads/handbaggers. We definately intend on going again at some point in the future.

So with a lack of funds the old record buying has had to be curtailed somewhat. Although I did manage to pick up a cheapie last payday off ebay, a nice white promo of Joe Simon's When, for the total cost (inc postage from the USA) of a tenner. I don't think it ever sells for much more, but when you can still get quality records like this for such a small amount it keeps me happy .

A Recent Post And Some Thoughts Of Late
Posted by Supercorsa, 13 August 2008 ·

The following is a post that I made on a lookback thread. I was trying to get across that I personally am sick and tired of all the recent threads and arguments with regards to too many events. I've been to events that are rammed and those that are almost empty, but I've enjoyed them all.

Yet another lookback thread, where there is not a playlist posted. To be honest the chances of me attending an event in Barnsley is almost zero, but I just wish to post an opinion on something. I feel the best way for a promoter to answer any critisms is to if possible post up a playlist or two. That way people can see what type of stuff is being played and if indeed it is to their liking. I read the initial post and the impression that I got was that the DJ's didn't get the dancefloor active, but were playing to chinstroking mates. Then again this may not be the case and that in actual fact they are playing something different to the norm and are going to stick to that policy, as that is what they believe in. This is just like so many other thread with regards to too many events, etc., as of late, people can't make an informed decision as to what event to attend as people (or punters as many are called) I believe are split into three categories. Firstly the group that like to hear what they know (for arguments sake oldies), secondly the group that like to hear new and different stuff (newies/rare) and finally those that just go out socially to see friends and don't care what sort of music is played (which imo is probably the majority of this scenes attendees).
I will admit to not being a dancer, but I would say dancers add to the atmosphere, but then again I've attended Solid Hit Soul before when there has been about 20 people in on some nights. Musically fantastic (imo), but not enough punters to continue you would think. But no the lads perservered, stuck to their beliefs and now it's one of the must attend events of the London scene.
The comment about the dj's can give us the tunes, perhaps they have been but they weren't to everyones liking. There must be hundreds of tunes that when first played no one liked, but with persistence have become popular. But also there must be tunes that some people consider played out or even cheesy. For instance Ain't No Mountain High Enough Marvin & Tammi, a few years back Mick Smith played it at a 100 Club anniversary. I was there and the dancefloor went crazy people dancing and singing along, thereafter the record was in demand and the price went up. However if it hadn't been played by Mick at the 100 Club, but by some other DJ at a small local night would it have took off like it did the answer is no. But the other side of the coin is a Dj at the George plays a tune that no one dances to, but insists on playing it because he likes it, he gets slagged off for having an empty dancefloor. Then two months later, Butch, Mick H, Soul Sam (take your pick) plays the same record to a packed floor at some allnighter, people come on here raving about it (resulting in everyone playing it out). Do punters of the George then go back and say to the DJ who played it first, sorry we were wrong and you were right? What I'm trying to say is that everyones tastes are different, try talking to the promoters, if you don't like the music policy or it's not going to change to your liking, then don't go. I have recently come to the conclusion that I am going to just go to the venues that I want to, not necessarily those venues where it seems to be cool to seen at. As so many have said before, life's too short.

A Weekend Of Mixed Emotions & Failed Plans
Posted by Supercorsa, 18 May 2008 ·

I was really looking forward to this weekend to celebrate my mates 40th, the plan was to attend Soul Revolution on the Friday night followed by the 100 Club on the Saturday. Unfortunatey the weekend didn't get off to the start that I had imagined.

Friday afternoon was spent at my Uncle Harold's funeral, a sad story made worse by the fact that things could have been so much different if the knowledge was there so many years ago. From since I can remember my uncle was a patient (resident) in mental institutes. He was a serviceman (RAF) in I think the Suez conflict, but when he returned home and to civvy street he had a breakdown (smashed windows in the house and other forms of unusual behaviour). From what I can gather it was probably some form of Post Traumatic Stress (another uncle told me that he thinks he was also suffering with a touch of malaria at the time), but in those days it was a case of lock 'em up. I think from there on in he just became institutionalised. He used to come home for weekends when I was younger, he was always smoking roll ups and asking for fags, that and warning us that the Germans were coming! He wouldn't hurt a fly and although he wasn't well he'd never allow me and my brothers or sister fight or argue with one another. My mum says he was a lovely young man, I learnt at the funeral from another uncle that when he was in the RAF he gave my Nan his paybook and just got by on a few bob. RIP Uncle Harold.

Later that evening I was in not so much of a sombre mood as I was travelling up to attend Soul Revolution in the company of my friends Gary (also brother in law) and Shaun (celebrating his 40th). Anyway after managing to get past Kenny on the door, after he insisted that he had to cross us off his list, we were unsure what to expect not having attended before. Anyway we found the Soul Or Nothing room at the back to find the other not so young man celebrating his 40th, that being Bearsy. Luckily I was very nearby when James presented him with a bottle of champagne for his birthday, so I managed to sneak a free glass, cheers! Spent a while in there whilst waiting for the downstairs room to open, nice to meet and greet James, Steve Cato, Baz, Simon M, Bearsy and the real surprise for me was seeing Rich Buckley who I haven't seen for what must be a couple of years. I was standing (I'm not a dancer) there when a tune came out from the speakers which I love, I knew I'd heard it before, but couldn't remember the name of it. So upto the decks I went to see a Coral label with the words Ortheia Barnes & I've Never Loved Nobody on it, what a fantastic record I love it (if anyone will have a copy for sale on Friday 30 May -payday- I'd be very interested), thanks for spinning it Baz. Anyway the rest of the night went by in a blur with time spent between the two rooms, enjoyed listening to Matt Male spot whilst chatting to Bearsy, funny thing was his spot was longer than planned I think Baz's watch had stopped . Matt Male spun another current fav of mine this being Jesse Fishers You're Not Loving A Beginner, dunno why he wouldn't accept my offer of £40 for it . Tune of the night for me though had to be Soul Incorporated's My Proposal spun by James Trouble, I've heard this before on a Scenesville tape, but never out loud, thought it was fantastic. Anyway before too long it was time to leave telling everyone who would listen that we'd see them at the 100 Club. I managed to stop Rich Buckley and his lovely young lady from falling prey to illegal minicab drivers and after dropping him off home (not Leeds!), stopped off for a burger and a birthday kebab for Shaun before arriving home at about 4.30am.

Managed a couple of hours kip before I was awoken by my 6 year old son wanting to go to football training, went back to bed later with the intention of getting up to watch the cup final. Woke up during half time, so I missed the best half!

Arrangements had been made for Saturday night to go to the 100 Club for the allnighter. Left my house at 9.30pm with a tenner in my wallet and the intention of stopping of at a cashpoint, picking up Shaun, then proceeding at speed to Oxford Street. Here is where the plans went astray. I went to the local cashpoint only to find I have no money . Not wishing to dissappoint Shaun I went round and told him of my embarrassing predicament and said if he wanted to I'd still go, because as I was driving I'd only have drunk water all night anyway. As an alternative to this we decided to pop down to the anniversary do at Farnborough for a couple of hours instead. In respect I'm glad that we did. On arrival was a bit unsure as the car park didn't seem that full, but once inside there was a respectable crowd in attendance. Nice to have a chat with Terry (Mr Tea) & Colin (Soulsmith) before they departed for I believe the 100 Club (gits! ). Andy Hutchins and Matt played a couple of great sets, first time I'd heard either of these play hopefully not the last. Nice to chat to Mischief, Chris and Moldie as always.

So I hadn't managed to get to the 100 Club and help Shaun & Bearsy celebrate their respective 40th birthdays as intended, but still as I realise now it's not the end of the world. I'm sure I'll get down there soon. And to compensate today I'm going to celebrate at home with my family the fact that I've won the Soul Source Fantasy Football League. Like I told Bearsy he maybe 40, but I'm no.1 !

Frustration In 2008
Posted by Supercorsa, 15 February 2008 ·

I haven't been out to a do since going to Lightwater before Christmas. I only get two weekends off out of four and what with family commitments it's sometimes hard to get out and about. I also admit to being bit of a lazy git and not wanting to venture too far, but when I'm off work the nearest event seems to be a good couple of hours away. When I'm at work there seems to be a load on nearby, tonight is a prime example. I'm on lates and Solid Hit is on, another event that I've had to miss. When I am off the wife seems to have my weekends planned out for me visiting relatives.
The next weekend I have off is at the start of March, but the wife wants to visit her Mum for her birthday and Mothers day. I've had a look at the events calendar nothing on in Gloucester, where the mother in law lives, that weekend. So I look ahead to the following weekend when I am off again. Great I think to myself, Lightwater is on and as I haven't been out for a while think I may venture up to the 100 Club afterwards. Then when checking my diary, b*****ks!, realise this is the same weekend as my brother-in-law's (he's also one of my best mates) 40th birthday weekend away to Weymouth. So that means I have to wait for another two weeks after that before venturing out.
Whilst at work this evening I've put in for a day off next Sunday, as hopefully I may get down to Rochester on the Saturday for the Kent Soul Club 2nd Anniversary do. I've got to get out soon I'm going stir crazy!
I apologise if I seem to be rambling, but I am so pissed off!

Buys Of 2007 - December
Posted by Supercorsa, 16 December 2007

Finally , here's the last of the record purchases for 2007. I was hoping to buy a few more this month, but what with Christmas and all, just couldn't do it. Anyway I did buy a couple more cheapies, these being the following:

The Odds & Ends - Let Me Try - Today
Chuck Jackson - Any Other Way - Wand

So the total soul purchases for 2007 equals: 50 7" singles, 3 LP's & 1 CD. As for the amount of money they've all cost, erm I can't remember and at this time of year I'd rather not let the wife know!

Anyway, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and hopefully see you all in 2008!

Buys Of 2007 - November
Posted by Supercorsa, 20 November 2007

Here's the penultimate listing of purchases for this year, you've only one more month to suffer. Only three records this month, what with my finances being tighter than a ducks backside. For next month I'm going to have to give copies of my wants list to people in the hope I get some for Christmas .

Anyway here's Novembers three 7"s:

Dee Dee Sharp - There Ain't Nothin' I Wouldn't Do For You - Cameo
David Ruffin - Everything's Coming Up Love - Motown
Peggy Gaines - When The Boy That You Love (Is Loving You) b/w The San Franciscan TKO's - Make Up Your Mind - Kent 100 Club Anniversary (1998)

Buys Of 2007 - October
Posted by Supercorsa, 23 October 2007

Only two more months of this to go . Anyway here's this months purchases, including for a change a few albums and a cd. I don't normally buy albums except at car boot sales maybe, but bought one for a quid (David Ruffin) in a RSPCA charity shop, gave me the urge to buy a couple more.

Bobby Reed - You Are - Brunswick
Edward Hamilton & The Fifes - I'm Gonna Love You - Jameco
Carl Carlton - I Can Feel It - Backbeat
David Ruffin - Everything's Coming Up Love - Motown LP
Garland Green - Jealous Kind Of Fella - Uni LP
Jackie Wilson - Whispers - Brunswick LP
Maxine Brown - Oh No Not My Baby (The Best Of Maxine Brown) - Kent CD.

I bought the Maxine Brown cd at the recent Kent Records 25th anniversary event at the Forum. Well after Maxines performance it would have been rude not to. I wish on the night I'd had enough cash to buy Mary Loves & Tommy Hunts cds as well, but unfortunately I just wasn't in the position to. Anyway I bought the cd and one of the posters for the night then went upstairs to hopefully get a few autographs. I'm not one for getting autographs usually, but I thought it had been such a great night wanted some sort of momento. So upon my arrival upstairs I saw Tommy Hunt and Winfield Parker, but no Mary, Maxine or the Flirtations. Somewhat disappointed thinking I'd missed the ladies, asked the gents for a couple of signatures whilst thanking them for a great night. Then to my great delight to my left I saw the ladies appear at the top of the stairs. People who know me would say I can be a bit mouthy and full of wit, but I was speechless when approaching Mary Love and Maxine Brown. Just mumbled my thanks and asked for autographs on the poster. I did get Maxine to sign the cd booklet though. Finally getting The Flirtations to sign the poster, just got to wait for payday now to go and get it framed (hate those cheap clip frame things). My biggest regret was not asking someone up on the balcony to take a picture of me with the artists . I don't like to ask people to do something for me when I don't know them, still hopefully I'll get another opportunity, not the end of the world, just seems like it.

Finally I'd just like to add that I'm glad that the event finished at 2am, people leaving happy and on a high wanting more. Whereas if it was an allnighter think in the morning you'd just be left with a small band of regular allnighter goers and in a large venue like the Forum don't think it would have the same atmosphere as somewhere like the 100 club. Hopefully Kent and Ady may arrange another one in a year or twos time, but if they do, they're going to have their work cut out to top that night. I can honestly say it was probably the best soul event I've ever attended bar none (and I was sober drinking water all evening). Thanks once again to Ady and his Kent colleagues for such a fantastic night.

Buys Of 2007 - September
Posted by Supercorsa, 24 September 2007

This month has been very disappointing for me in record buying terms. The main reason is lack of funds or should I say buying stuff for the kids new school term (shoes, uniforms, pens, folders, etc.,) taking priority. Mind you I'm not too downhearted as I haven't seen any records that I've been desperate to get listed for sale this month anyway. However I did manage to buy one record, this from Pikeys sales listed on here, plus I also received the freebie at the 100 Club on Saturday.
Here's the two records:

Etta James - Mellow Fellow - Argo
Milton Bennett - What's One More Lie b/w The Hesitations - Go Away - Kent 100 Club Anniversary (2007)

Buys Of 2007 - August
Posted by Supercorsa, 20 August 2007

As I know I'm not going to be buying anything for the rest of the month (lack of funds), I thought I'd do the monthly list today. Also the fact that two records were awaiting my arrival from work this afternoon nudged me into doing it. Anyway on with the list.

Shirley Wahls - Why Am I Crying - King
The Artistics - This Heart Of Mine - Okeh
The Falcons - Standing On Guard - Big Wheel
The Ambassadors - (I've Got To Find) Happiness - Atlantic
Johnnie Mae Matthews - Baby What's Wrong - Blue Rock

I actually only bought the Johnnie Mae Matthews the other day for the princely sum of $9.95, on an Ebay buy-it-now listing. So with postage from the States works out at less than a tenner, can't be bad, just got to wait for it to arrive now. Managed to get The Artistics for £50 (I outbid someone by just 1 cent for it on ebay), which I think is quite reasonable when I've seen copies listed for £100+. Admittedly it's not in mint condition, bit of writing & damage on the label although it plays fine, but as someone once said you can't play a label.

Hoping I might be able to splash out a bit next month, that's if all my relatives put large amounts of cash in my birthday cards.

Buys Of 2007 - July
Posted by Supercorsa, 28 July 2007

Well it's the next thrilling instalment of records purchased this year. These blogs must read like a telephone directory , but I've started so I'll finish, as Magnus once said. One thing I must say is that I seem to be buying more stuff on Buy-it-Now, than bidding on in auctions. I seem to think that the vinyl is in better condition, than on some of the auction stuff I've won in the past. It was a poor month for buying records, with only three added to the collection. Still it's three more than I had this time last month.

Well here they are, as before no expensive tunes just collection fillers:

Charmaine - Young Girl - Serock
Azie Mortimer - You Can't Take It Away - Okeh
Inovations - Just Keep On Loving Me - Hit Sound

The bottom two arrived in the post yesterday (27/07/07) and upon opening was suprised to find them wrapped in a couple of pages of The Meadville Tribune dated 23 July 07, now that's what I call quick delivery from the US.

Lightwater 30 June 2007
Posted by Supercorsa, 01 July 2007

Just thought I'd add what I posted in the Lightwater lookback thread.

I arrived early to find the doors locked, until they finally submitted and told me to stop with the JJ Barnes impression. Inside discovered Moldie and Chris hiding hoping that I would get bored and go home. I would go home, but this wouldn't be until I had attempted to drink the bar dry of Greene King Smooth . To keep me out of trouble, Moldie asked if I'd like to spin a few records before the official start time of 7.30pm, I think this was just a ploy so that he didn't have to talk to me for any longer than need be. Anyway I did my stint at the decks, possibly the best set of the night, after Chris's, Dave's, Warren's, The Barrow Boys (Phil & Rob? Told you I'd drank a lot), Keith & Maxine's. I must say that I thought it was one of the best nights musically down at The Crossley Club, if I'm honest I prefer it in the one room (too lazy to keep going up & downstairs for drinks). I was in that much of a good mood (drunk), I actually had a dance during Dave Abbots set! Finally had to call it a night before I lost my sense of balance, good job the wife doesn't drink. Gave a lift home to Terry (Mr Tea), who must also have a loving wife. As he was getting her to take him back today, to pick his car up. Finally just want to say thanks to Moldie and the others who DJ'd, plus all those that attended for a great night.
Here's what I played for those who are interested (might not have been in this order):

Frank Butler - How I Feel About You - Space Age
Jimmy (Soul) Clark - Tell Her - Moira
Billy Butler - Help Yourself - Brunswick
Jimmy Delphs - I've Been Fooled Before - Carla
Edwin Starr - I Have Faith In You - Ric Tic
The Temptations - Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue) - Gordy
The Supremes - He's All I Got - Motown
Brenda Holloway - When I'm Gone - Tamla
Mary Wells - Keep Me In Suspense - Atco
Theresa Lindsey - Daddy-O - Golden World DJ Copy
Barbara Acklin - Am I The Same Girl - Brunswick
The Lovelites - My Conscience - Lovelite
Jean Wells - What Have I Got To Lose - Calla Promo Copy
Barbara Mercer - Call On Me - Sidra DJ Copy
Jimmy Norman - This I Beg Of You - Samar
The Precisions - Instant Heartbreak (Just Add Tears) - Drew
Louis Curry - I'll Try Again Tomorrow - M-S
Deon Jackson - Ooh Baby - Carla
The Sheppards - How Do You Like It - Mirwood
Occasions - There's No You - Big Jim
The De Vons -Someone To Treat Me (The Way You Use To) - King
June Conquest - What's This I See - Curtom
The Impressions - You Ought To Be In Heaven - Abc
Bobby Bland - Shoes - Duke
The Superiors - Can't Make It Without You - Mgm DJ Copy
The Mighty Marvelows - Talkin' Bout Ya, Baby - Abc

Buys Of 2007 - June
Posted by Supercorsa, 30 June 2007 ·

Well half the year has gone already, doesn't time fly when you're having fun!
I've only bought three records again this month, although if I may so myself, all quality tunes. I'm still waiting for one to arrive from the States. I arrived home this morning, after taking my son football training, to be greated by a parcel containing one of my ebay purchases. I was a little disappointed to find it wasn't the one I was hoping to receive before tonights do at Lightwater. Then on the other hand very pleased that it arrived so quickly when it was the last one purchased, so I can't complain really. Anyway on with the show, here they are:

The Royal Esquires - Ain't Gonna Run - Prix
(Bought for just £30 at Solid Hit Soul, seller knocked off £20 from marked price of £50. I'm never quite sure of the sellers name, he has boxes marked up with the name Soul Incorporated. Is his name Des Parker? Whatever his name is, he's a top man in my book! )
The TSU Toronados - Please Heart Don't Break - Rampart Street
Maurice Jackson - Lucky Fellow - Lakeside

I am quite certain that I'll be playing, some of the stuff that I've bought this year, tonight at Moldies event in Lightwater. Whether anyone will like any of them is another thing altogether!

Buys Of 2007 - May
Posted by Supercorsa, 04 June 2007

May has been a very poor month for me, both financially and record buying wise. However I still managed to purchase three pieces of vinyl, although I'm still waiting for two of them to arrive in the post.

Emanuel Lasky - Lucky To Be Loved (By You) - Wild Deuce
The Artistics - The Chase Is On - Brunswick
Jackie Wilson - I've Lost You - Brunswick

Right where did I put that list for next months payday....

Buys Of 2007 - April
Posted by Supercorsa, 28 April 2007 ·

I said this month was going to be bad, I only managed to get 2 records. Mind you, they did set me back a few bob between the pair of them.

Lorraine Chandler - You Only Live Twice b/w The Metros - My Imagination - Kent 100 Club Anniversary (1997)
The Sheppards - Stubborn Heart b/w How Do You Like It - Mirwood

I just hope the Sheppards gets here in one piece!

During the month went to a local car boot on the bank holiday Monday. Whilst looking through some blokes stuff I overheard a conversation between the seller and another bloke. Seems the bloke had bought a box full of northern soul records for £160 from the seller (seller said worked out about £1 each record) the day before. The seller said a few people had had some stuff from the box before he bought it. The buyer was moaning saying that there was nothing of real value in the box and he couldn't find any references to the records in goldmine book. The impression that I got was that the buyer collected doo-wop & rock n roll and that he'd bought the records just to make money. I thought to myself, hope he's got a box full of disco demand stuff, the money grabbing b&*%**d!

Buys Of 2007 - March
Posted by Supercorsa, 03 April 2007

Haven't bought much this month, mainly due to being skint , I've only purchased five records.

Gene Chandler - Such A Pretty Thing - Checker
Bobby Bland - Shoes - Duke
Ben E King - What Can A Man Do - Atco
The De Vons - Someone To Treat Me (The Way You Use To) - King
The Temptations - Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue) - Gordy

Looking at my bank balance this afternoon, I think April will be a bad month as well.
Oh well, hopefully may be able to scour the old car boot sales soon, they usually start in earnest after Easter.

Right, I'm going to join Dave Rimmer & Matt Male in listing what records I buy this year. If only to keep in check how much I'm spending when I can't really afford it. With the risk of opening myself up to some ridicule with the stuff that I buy , here we go,

Darrow Fletcher - The Pain Gets A Little Deeper - Groovy
The Volumes - Gotta Give Her Love - American Arts

Deon Jackson - I Can't Go On - Carla Promo

Just paid for something else today, that can go on the list for February.

Firstly, I'd like to thank Moldie for asking me to spin a few tunes, it was a privilege to do so.

I apologise for shooting off quickly at the end, but had a call to say my son was ill at home. Got home to discover he'd been sick all over his bed and sister during the evening!

Looking Forward With Some Trepidation
Posted by Supercorsa, 12 December 2006 ·

This weekend (16 December 2006) I will be DJing for Moldie at his Lightwater event. I'm excited and a little bit scared at the same time. I've only DJed before at my club for non-paying customers, so I'm a little worried that this time paying punters may be disappointed with what I play .
My small collection is more than enough to fill the 45 minute slot that Moldie has given me at the start of the evening. I know traditionally this is sometimes the most difficult spot to fill, as most do's are quiet at the beginning . But then I suppose there is less pressure as I may not be playing to the floor, that's not to say I don't intend trying to get people to dance. If I just get one person up and dancing then I'll go home happy.

Mixed Emotions
Posted by Supercorsa, 17 October 2005 ·

Well I had another stab at holding a Do, it's been a few days now so I've had time to collect my thoughts. It is very much a case of mixed emotions, pleased with myself for playing (primarily) original vinyl only, honoured that Moldie, Chris & Mischief agreed to DJ (Thanks Gents), disappointed that not more people turned up (more for the others than me) and finally embarrased for getting pissed and dancing so badly!

Some promoters have different reasons for holding events I'm not going to go into all that, I'm just going to give mine. I am on the committee of the Staines Ex-Servicemens Club, as such I can get the use of DJing equipment plus the main hall for free. True it is only a small venue and I can't get an extension past 11.30pm, but I am able to play the sort of music I want to hear and also that what my friends want to hear (if only they'd turn up! ).

Anyway here's what I played (What I can remember playing anyway ), not necessarily in this order:

Marv Johnson - You Got The Love I Love - Tamla Motown
Marvin Gaye - Chained - Tamla
Jimmy Delphs - Almost - Karen
The Undisputed Truth - You Got The Love I Need - Gordy
The Contours - Just A Little Misunderstanding - Gordy
Syl Johnson - Try Me - Twilight
Majestic - Send My Baby Back To Me - Equator
Barbra Mercer - Hey!! - Golden World
Barbara Mason - Ain't Got Nobody - Arctic
The Occasions - There's No You - Big Jim
The Precisions - Instant Heartbreak (Just Add Tears) - Drew
Barbara Randolph - I Got A Feeling - Soul
Eddie Kendricks - Date With The Rain - Tamla
Joe Turner - Two Loves Have I - Phillips (French)
The Exits - You Got To Have Money - Gemini
Edwin Starr - I Have Faith In You - Ric Tic
Edwin Starr - If My Heart Could Tell The Story - Gordy
The Five Stairsteps - Change Of Pace - Windy C
The Superiors - Let Me Make You Happy - MGM Promo
Lorraine Rudolph - Keep Coming Back For More - Jetstream
The Voice Masters - You've Hurt Me Baby - Bamboo
Little Charles - Guess I'll Have To Take What's Left -Jewel
Tammi Terrell - I Can't Believe You Love Me - Motown
Kim Weston - Helpless - Gordy
Martha & The Vandellas - My Baby Loves Me - Gordy
Edwin Starr - Girls Are Getting Prettier - Ric Tic
Jackie Wilson - (I Can Feel Those Vibrations) This Love Is Real - Brunswick
The Avons - Since I Met You Baby - Excello
Jimmy Robins - I Can't Please You - Jerhart
Jimmy Norman - This I Beg Of You - Samar
The Magicians - (Just A Little) Faith And Understanding - Kent

I sometimes wish I had a Monday to Friday job that enabled me to go out every weekend to a Do, but I don't (then I wouldn't have to hold me own!). As a result I have to be a bit more selective when I go out, because having only 2 weekends off a month and wanting to spend time with my wife and kids, I sometimes may only go out once maybe twice every two months. So I go to events that I know I'll enjoy rather than events that are sometimes seen as the place to go.
The one event that I have been to this year as often as I can has been Solid Hit Soul, it's not because of numbers. It was because I was made to feel welcome, also they play quality records which is a bonus! Others have been Moldie's events in Lightwater & Farnborough, reasons being they are local to me and I enjoy the music played there (which again is different to Solid Hit Soul). I am not a great traveller, I don't want to be driving for an hour or two to somewhere, knowing that I've got to drive home afterwards. One reason is I can't be arsed to, and another is the wife doesn't like being left on her own in the house with the kids too long at night. So that is why you won't see me at too many allnighters! Any other event I go to would be primarily due to the people who would be there, the Derby Alldayer being a case in point!

Anyway I can now look forward to planning the next Do to attend. Is that events calendar fixed yet?

Frustration
Posted by , 12 August 2005
Can someone explain why whenever I plan to go out, something crops up to put a spanner in the works?

Last weekend for example I had planned to go to the 100 Club for the allnighter. What happens, my 3 year old son gets upset because Dad's going out, this in turn makes the wife all stressed, who then in turn doesn't want me to go! So being the soft touch that I am, I stay in.

As a result of that I look ahead to this weekend. I scour the events listing and see the NCSC allnighter in Stoke. I haven't really ventured up north (Stoke is north from me) and never having attended a NCSC event before, thought I'd push the boat out. Having saved money from last weekend, plus stashing away the money I received for my wedding anniversary on Monday, I was looking forward to scouring through all those record dealers boxes.

How fate has a cruel way of knackering any hopes I have of getting out of a weekend! Our cooker has broke (well the oven really), so now the money that I had stashed is to be used to purchase a new cooker!

Why me?

A Couple Of Days After
Posted by , 26 June 2005

Well I needn't have worried about the room being half full of soulies & half full of members thinking this is shit. As the room wasn't even half full!

Anyway where do I start? I know, my brother-in-law who started playing his records at 7.30pm. Thankfully nobody was there to hear them apart from myself, I managed to kick him off before anyone turned up. I said it was the crap that he was playing that scared people away! He was playing stuff like: You've Got Me Dangling On A String - Chairman Of The Board, You're More Than A Number - The Drifters, Under My Thumb - Wayne Gibson, I won't bore you with the rest. To be fair though he did play his Gino Washington - I'll be Around - Mala Promo, he bought it about 20 years ago for £2.50 thinking it was GENO Washington & The Ram Jam Band! Since he's found out it's true value he won't sell it to me!

Anyway I started playing through from about 8.20pm to 10pm. I was just playing whatever I liked with no set playlist in mind. I was pleased when someone asked me about one of the records that I was playing, Unit Plus - What's The Price Of Happiness? - Verve DJ (it was because of this record that I taunted Pete-S on here, which lead to the introduction of the following smilie ). Anyway during my stint at the decks some people actually turned up, amongst them Soulsmith, Moldie, Mr Tea plus a few others. A couple of girls actually danced to some stuff which pleased me!

It was nice to meet Moldie & Soulsmith, especially after going to various Do's that they've held and having spoken on here. I was more than happy for Moldie to spin a few tunes, which he did between 10pm & 11pm, and very nice they were too.

After Moldie, my mate Shaun had a stab at spinning a few tunes (out of my record box) mainly Oldies. Before long I took over for the last 10 minutes or so. Just long enough to play a couple of requests one for Mr Tea (Jeanette Harper - Pick Me Up And Put Me In Your Pocket) and one for my mate Malcolm ( Little Hank - Mr Bang Bang Man). The last two tracks played were Timi Yuro's - It'll Never Be Over For Me & Jimmy Radcliffe with Long After Tonight Is All Over.

Did I enjoy it? Yes I did!
Would I Do It Again? I'm not too sure, we'll have to wait and see.

One thing I did gain was a change of opinion, that of playing CD's at Do's. It never used to bother me, but I played one track off CD allnight (Timi Yuro), to be honest not all my records are originals, but I did take some satisfaction from playing records instead of CD's.

I would just like to thank those that did turn up, it was appreciated. I'm just sorry we couldn't have had a few more in, maybe next time.

The Day Before
Posted by , 23 June 2005

Sitting here worrying about tomorrow evening.

I have had to attend allsorts of disco's & karaoke evenings as well as listen to hundreds of middle of the road bands down my Club. So now I'm on the committee, all of a sudden I think I can suddenly promote an evening of Northern Soul, under the guise of the Staines Ex-Servicmens Club. Originally I planned it because I get one Friday evening off out of four. This Friday I'm off, my mates wedding is on the Saturday, it's payday, I don't go to many Do's (one a month if I'm lucky), free venue, free equipment, so I thought sod it I'll have me own Do.

The Club has basic equipment, but will it be good enough? They bought two new decks (bottom of the range Numark TT1610's), which have been used about three times in the last 2 years. The speakers are in use everyday for background music or when the bingo's called. The amp, CD player & mixer were all donated to the club, tell a lie the mixer is my mates. Whenever I attend anywhere nowadays every mixer I seem to see in use has more switches on them than Concordes flightdeck. Then I think to myself "I'm not a fucking DJ anyway, so if anyones records are going to get knackered they'll be mine".

I have received offers of equipment from Soulsmith, which I felt I had to decline. As it's really the Staines Ex-Servicemens Club that is having this Do and not me. The Club will be the one who makes the money over the bar, I will not recieve one penny from tomorrow night.

Records are my main concerns, have I got enough quality tracks for the evening. I have got a collection of approximately 400 singles (a mixture of originals/reissues/bootlegs), but it is probably more than adequate for tomorrow evening. However is more than adequate enough? That is why I put on the flyer "Across The Board Tunes played from Across The Board Formats, Original & Non-Original Vinyl & CD's", as I felt I may need to play tunes that people may want to hear that I just don't have on vinyl, but do have on CD. For my mates who attend soul nites even less than I do, all they want to listen to is stuff like The Right Track, If That's What You Wanted, Our Love Will Grow, Do I Love You, even possibly The Snake! In my opinion most people on this site would cringe at the thought of going to a Do like this, let alone playing these records.
I suppose the problem I'm faced with is that my tastes have changed over the last 18 months, whereas my friends taste haven't changed over the last 18 years.
Do I play what I want to hear or what they want to hear?

It doesn't help when I know people like Soulsmith maybe coming. I mean he has been involved at events (Chalfont, Lightwater), so I don't want to appear like a complete twat who doesn't know what he's doing! Also people passing the Club have seen the poster outside and have been enquiring about it. What I don't want is half the room full of soulies thinking this is shit and the other half full of members thinking this is shit. Mind you it could be worse: dancefloor =

Thinking about it, I'll take Andy F's advice (could've been RBmans can't remember) and just get pissed. That way then I won't care if it's shit at least I've had a go!

Publisher: Marsupial (BMI), tracks 2 to 5

Some history from the website.

Kingdom Come Forever Records came into existence as of May 2011 and the owner is Lou Barreto. Lou has been around the music business, not only as a writer but as a record producer and promoter in conjunction with another producer, Rod Bumgardner (also a writer). Both of them were the producers for all the songs on the CD album that features Gloria Jones, Jimmy McFarland, and the Tiaras. Lou wrote most of the songs on the CD album, but Rod and Nick Drury were the writers on "You're My Man."

Lou drop out of the music business in February of 1983. Lou said, "the Lord God" spoke to him in February of 1983 at 7pm in his apartment. It was just a few words, "I open and close the doors and I control everything that you are seeking." Lou said, "He flip out in one thousand of a second" and from that day on he became a Believer in Jesus Christ with one purpose, to pursue the will of God to do the will of God. It was the Lord, it was the Lord and there was not a fraction of a doubt. It was the Lord, the un-invited guest that spoke to me. Amazing. It's been twenty eight years since that amazing moment in my life. A miracle. The music era of my life sort of came to a halt from 1983 to 2008.

To continue with the story of Lou's involvement with the music business, Lou, back in the year of 2008, had nothing better to do than to do an internet search on one of his songs and up came several of his songs. To his surprise, the songs were very popular with Northern Soul crowd in the UK. From that moment on Lou became involved with the music industry trying to collect back royalties from record companies that had his songs on many albums and Lou became more involved tracking down record companies that were exploiting his tunes. Eventually Lou became involved with the formation of new record company in 2010. He decided to go back and examine what tapes or vinyl he had on Jimmy McFarland, Gloria Jones and the Tiaras and what he could do to release or license the songs to other companies for distribution.

Lou made the decision to form Kingdom Come Forever Records back in the year 2010. Lou made the decision to create a CD album compilation featuring Gloria Jones, Jimmy McFarland and the Tiaras. Gloria's version of "Gone With The Wind is My Love" was lost and forgotten some years ago. In June of 2010, Lou and Rod Bumgardner found the vinyl recording of Gloria's performance which was recorded at Nashville West Recording studio and when Lou heard it, he said "Wow." He finally, after4 months, made contact with Gloria Jones and got together with Gloria in Los Angeles in November 2010 to sign an agreement to release the song. Gloria was excited about the song as it was being played. Gloria said, "It's a blessing from heaven above." Gloria is still musically active & known in the US, Sierra Leone West Africa, UK, & Germany for "Tainted Love" and many other songs that are listed on YouTube. The Tiaras performed the back up vocals for "Gone With The Wind is My Love." Gloria currently resides in several parts of the world-United States, West Africa and she is involved with the creation of a new school of music to educate the younger generation in Sierra Leone. Gloria is still available for engagements and performance on TV, Radio and stage. Gloria has been a very busy lady and looks great. She also has a son Rolan who is involved with the music business as a performer in the LA area of California and another son who is married.

And Lou discover another song that was lost and forgotten years ago. It was Jimmy McFarland's original "Blowing My Mind To Pieces," with the Tiaras doing the backup vocals. . Jimmy's never released performance is powerful and exciting. Not only did Jimmy record the original 3 minute version, but also a new arrangement which is on the CD. The CD features both the original and new arrangement. Jimmy is very active in the music business as a performer in the San Antonio Texas area. Jimmy has recorded many tunes over the years from "Lonely Lover" to "You Make Me Feel Like A Man." He was also the lead singer for the Los Blues Band and played various instruments. Jimmy is still available for engagements and performance on TV, Radio, and stage.

The Tiaras are also feature on the CD with their performance on "You're My Man" and Love's Made A Connection. Their performance speaks for itself. A blend of soul with a touch of Rhythm and Blues. The Tiaras are from the Orange county area and some reside in Los Angeles. The Tiaras performed all the back up vocals for both Gloria and Jimmy. The song You're My Man" by the Tiaras really sounds like a winner. It has to be heard. Edna Woods of the Tiaras, back in the 80's, also performed with the Ikette and Tina Turner back I n the 80's for several years-touring with the group in the US and the UK.

The songs by Gloria and Jimmy has never been heard by the general public music audience or radio jocks-including the Tiaras song "You're My Man."Kingdom Come Forever Records will attempt to promote these songs as new releases to the general public since the arrangements on these songs can be consider as current with today's sound and message with a twist of Soul, Rhythm & Blues, and Pop. The CD Digital Downloads will be purchased on CD Baby and the Physical CD can be purchased at Kunaki Distributors via Kingdom Come Forever.com website.......

Scarborough Autumn Weekender 2010 /2011

Thought you'd find this piece from the Bridlington Weekender Mag interesting as a look back / forward to the Scarborough Weekender in October
Scarborough Autumn Weekender. Looking Back, Looking Forward , Looking to become a classic.
Cast your minds back to a sparkling sunny weekend in the Autumn days of October 2010 and the wonderful setting of Scarborough. Glorious sunshine shimmered across the bay during the day and framed the magnificent Spa Pavilion against the South bay cliffs, glistening off the tall glass structure. Then cue the music and let the first Scarborough Northern and Rare Soul Weekender get under way and straight into the groove.
Based over two rooms, with a 90% 1960s music policy, the main room being classic oldies and current floor fillers and the rare and underplayed room it does exactly what it says on the tin. The crowd began to find their way up the stairs, or in the nifty lift, through the broad foyer area which quickly became a wind tunnel for the door staff. A lasting image for me will be Lynne Brady huddled up in her coat trying to prevent frostbite setting in in the brisk North Sea breeze every time both double doors were open into the smoking area!
However the temperature soon rose as the brilliant main room sprang into life with the early birds trying out the new floor for size! I was pleased to see a totally new set of faces (to me) mingling in with familiar friends, a large contingent had made their way down from the North East and Scotland to attend. Also a fine showing from West of the Pennines had also made the journey.
As the attendance was capped at 1,000 for the inaugural event, most made the effort to get there early and were inside by 10.00 pm on the Friday, including travellers from the South coast and Norfolk areas. This lead to what can only be described as a cracking atmosphere inboth rooms as classic and underplayed oldies followed one after theother in the main room. The over-riding fact was that people werethere to have a great time and dance the weekend away, which they did to tune after tune after tune. All the D J s played blinding sets andgave the crowd exactly what they wanted.
Several visits to the rare room found atmosphere by the truck load, with a different ethos to the music and several tempos of sound intertwining to prove that not everyone wants the traditional style of 60s soul. However the dance floor was equally as busy as the dedicated faithful and rare soul searchers used the floor to their advantage. This room also feature a balcony, which was ideal as a place to watch, listen and learn as Tony Hatfield and the gang pulled out sound after sound to the applause of the appreciative audience.
All too soon it was 2.00 am and the first session of the inaugural Scarborough Weekender came to a close and people began to wind their way back to their digs. The council even kept the funicular railway- cliff lift to you lot - open at this late hour for people staying in the South Cliff district towering above the Spa Complex. The lift has been there since 1875, making it just a year older than Soul Sam!
The glorious sunshine returned on Saturday, although it was intermingled by a couple of sharp showers. A quick foray into a couple of the towns famous record shops found the usual suspects hovering in the corners and around the soul sections flicking through the piles of vinyl albums and 45s on display. A few rye smiles on the faces as I stopped to chat in the town later told their own tales of "vinyl discovery", mostly at bargain prices!
The afternoon session was perfect for this venue, with a more relaxed feel and the superb cafÃÆ’© situated on the ground floor adjacent to the main entrance for those wanting something to eat.More akin to a chill out session early on, as the afternoon crowd grew sothe floor became busier and by the time the session ended people didn't really want to leave !
Onto Saturday night and the buzz and groove of the Friday continued, yours truly opened the session at seven thirty, I decided to mix in several truly underplayed Oldies. I was amazed at the comments I received and the attention this got to the decks "I haven't heard that for years", "What's this Rob " and "I didn't know you had that" were just a few I can recall.
By the time I'd finished my hour's warm up the room was on its way to being packed, people seemed to want to savour every minute of this session and were really up for it.
Super oldies sets from Dukesy, Bridgey, Richard Cryer, Rob Wicks and Pat Brady. Ensured the dancers had little time to rest their feet before the next classic tune hit the decks. A full dance floor all night speaks volumes to the quality of the records played, indeed the DJs seem to "up the ante" as it became obvious that people were there to dance and not sit looking into their drinks!
I took the opportunity to keep up regular visits to the rare and under played room as did many others again the balcony area provided a birds eye view on the proceedings with the bar handily situated to get drinks whilst watching and listening.
A welcome feature and much commented on was the smattering of rare 70s / crossover tunes now being played in this session-we always listen to what is being said and read on to findout some great news! As with the main room, the dance floor was especially busy. As I had a little more free time on the Saturday evening I spent time talking to friends new and old, the generally feeling on the Scarborough weekender was that it was long overdue! Many had attended events during the 1970s in the town and had very fond memories of the place.
Throughout the evening I kept an eye on the Bars and no one seem to wait too long to get served, once again a great friendly atmosphere and a noticeable buzz throughout the venue. All too soon it was time to say goodnight and head off to my digs for some rest !
Sundays seagulls were in fine voice when I woke from my slumber, a quick shower and something to eat and it was down to the Spa for the all-day session, I was pleasantly surprised at the number that were inside soon after the 12 noon opening time, althoughI had to make my excuses and leave around 4.00 pm myself due to family commitments.
All in all a fantastic inaugural weekender, witheveryone leaving with smiles on their faces and praise for the fantastic venue. A big thank you goes out to all involved from theDjs to our flyer teams and ticket agents and to the people whoattended to make it very special indeed.
Thank You!
After the initial success of this event and after protracted discussions with the management team the North Yorkshire Soul Collective in association with Pat Brady records are delighted to announce that the 2011 Scarborough weekender will take place over the weekend of 20th 21st & 22ndOctober 2011. After substantial refurbishment we are now able to offer the ultimate room for Northern Soul enjoyment, The Grand Hall is up and running and ready to go-go !!
Somewhere in the region of £4 Million has been spent on the upgrade of the North side of the Spa complex including acompletely relaid dance floor to competition standard. Just wait till the Northern boys and girls get their feet on that.
At the time of writing the DJ line up is being shaped and is awaiting confirmation - but there will be a full page advertisement along side this article if all goes to plan-so take it from there.
I can tell you that Barnsley's favourite son Yocky isnow available to join the line up this year.
There will also be a Northern Soul "Home International" as hosts England take on Scotland with the busiest dance floor as the prize.
As with the 2010 event, we are keeping the room format basically the same, with the main hall being 90% classics and 10% current floor fillers. The York Soul Club are again calling the shots in the Rare and Underplayed room with Captain Tony Hatfield at the helm, guiding the rare soul "Matelot's" across the tempestuous dance floor.. well it is the seaside after all! Expect plenty of surprises in that room.
To make the 2011, 2nd Scarborough Weekender extra special we have been listening to comments from YOU ,the people and we have now added a THIRD room to the event, loosely titled the Modern Room it will cover the years 1975 to present day, again with emphasis on keeping the dance floor busy. Bridlington residents John Kane and Martin Dixon have already agreed to join the line up. Watch the press for more details this also fills a void leftby the announcement of demise of the Prestatyn Legends Weekender earlier this year
Tickets are priced at just £30 for the whole weekendand there is a fantastic range of reasonably priced guest houses, hotels and apartments to suit all pockets and taste. Tickets are available to buy over this weekend ask at the door for tickets or visit Pat Brady's recordstall.

Essential New Ace Release For Impressions Fans

Because it's not on Kent - and because the Kent releases themselves were so strong this month - one of the most important CDs that Ace has released this year may have escaped your attention.

It's not one of my compilations so I don't mind shouting about it from the imaginary rooftops - but it''s one that all lovers of early Chicago soul should be aware of on a 'need-to-own' basis...

'Bandera Doo Wop' is possibly not a title that grabs the attention of your average Soul Sourcer - but it's a must for all fans of the Impressions, as it contains all of their surviving pre-Falcon/Abner/Vee Jay/ABC demos and masters - including their original demos of 'For Your Precious Love', 'Sweet Was The Wine' and 'I've Got A Girl' , Curtis Mayfield's first recorded vocal, and a song that later became Major Lance's first single on Mercury.

A lot of restoration work went into the salvaging of these demos. The fi isn't always as hi as you might wish for, but the music is priceless - and how often do you get the chance to hear one of the greatest groups of all time at their youngest and hungriest, laying down rough demos of their songs in the hope that a record label boss might think that they had something that 'the kids' would like?

It won't be to the tastes of everyone on here (although it ought to be) but I wanted to make sure that everyone knew about it , as it's in Ace's 'Limited Edition' series and there were only 1500 copes manufactured - a good percentage of which are already gone...

Those that are left should be available from your usual Ace/Kent retailer until stocks are exhausted!

Benny Spellman Rip

Sad news, "Fortune Teller", what a legacy to leave. Rest In Peace.

[r]18048[/r]

Benny Spellman, the vocalist whose double-sided recording of "Fortune Teller" and "Lipstick Traces (On a Cigarette)" is an enduring classic of New Orleans rhythm & blues, died Friday in Florida after a long illness. He was 79.

Mr. Spellman was born in Pensacola, Fla. He attended Southern University in Baton Rouge on a football scholarship; at Southern, he also began singing.

Back in Pensacola in 1959, Mr. Spellman encountered New Orleans R&B band Huey Smith & the Clowns. The band's vehicle had broken down; Mr. Spellman offered to drive them back to New Orleans. He elected to remain there after falling in with the burgeoning rhythm & blues community centered around the Dew Drop Inn.

He became one of the many artists to give voice to producer/songwriter Allen Toussaint's voluminous 1960s output. In 1962, Minit Records released a 45 rpm single with Mr. Spellman singing "Lipstick Traces" on the A-side and "Fortune Teller" on the B-side. Both songs were written by Toussaint under the pseudonym "Naomi Neville."

"Lipstick Traces," with Irma Thomas on backing vocals, proved to be Mr. Spellman's most significant national hit, reaching No. 28 on Billboard's R&B chart. He also contributed backing vocals to Ernie K-Doe's smash recording of another Toussaint song, "Mother-in-Law."

Given his limited national exposure, Mr. Spellman worked the Gulf Coast and local circuit, performing at parties, dances and whatever gigs came up.

"I wasn't making that big money like K-Doe," Mr. Spellman once said. "I'd play three gigs (in one night) to make more money."

Indicative of the enduring nature of his recordings, many artists would later cover songs originally recorded by Mr. Spellman. The O'Jays, Ringo Starr and Alex Chilton all later did "Lipstick Traces."

The Rolling Stones and The Who each did versions of "Fortune Teller." "Raising Sand," the Grammy-winning, million-selling 2007 collaboration between Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, contained a spooky version of "Fortune Teller."

After the market for New Orleans rhythm & blues dried up in the late 1960s, Mr. Spellman largely retired from the music business. He worked for many years at a beer distributorship.

He suffered a stroke some years ago and was unable to attend an August 2009 ceremony at Ernie K-Doe's Mother-in-Law Lounge inducting him into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. At the time, he resided in an assisted living facility in Pensacola.

Instead, "Deacon" John Moore and Hall of Fame president Mike Shepherd traveled to Pensacola and personally presented Mr. Spellman with the plaque noting his induction.

"Thank you Lord. After all these years, I finally made it," Mr. Spellman says in a video of the presentation. "I waited a long time for ya'll to elect me to the Hall of Fame. I'm still living; all them other cats are gone. I don't want to be honored when I'm dead. I want to be honored when I can still move."

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Spellman. A funeral is scheduled for June 10 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 140 West Government Street in Pensacola, Fla.

Bob and Gene - It's Not What You Know - 45 out now

Here's a tasty slice of summer pie from Daptones Ever Soul imprint...

Bob and Gene -: "It's Not What You Know (It's Who You Know)" - "Lonely Nights"

below form the daptone site

Tweezed from the beautiful MO DO tape boondoggle, back in '05-6, this un-released single has been a planned release for some time and an office favorite for too long. At the tail end of the "Bob & Gene" era, say about 1970-'71, the duo was a little frustrated. Despite the time and effort the young men were putting into their song writing and production, things were not working out as planned, the guys needed a breakthrough.

They sat in the basement of 50 Orange Street one night and put together a record expressing their frustration. There was no band - just the two of them. They had a guitar, bass and piano, but no drums... some reverb, EQ's and the 4-track. Astoundingly the percussion cooked up on these two sides come from only pots, pans and box's - yes, even what sounds exactly like an open high hat on "It's Not What You Know."

The songwriting and vocal performance are no less remarkable. Bobby Nunn and Eugene Coplin penned the two songs featured on this 45. "It's Not What You Know" deals with the frustration - asks and answers the question. Q: "did you you ever wonder why/ the boss's son don't have to try as hard as you?" A: "it's not what you know, it's who you know... stop jitterbuggin' start elbow rubbin' and things are going to get better."

In "Lonely Nights," listeners familiar with the group's LP If This World Where Mine will hear an extension of a familiar theme. The song originated with the late Bobby Fonville, a fellow Buffalonian songwriter and close friend of William Nunn Sr. Fonville would often come by the Nunn house to brainstorm. On one such visit he sat on the couch and played a melody on his guitar, Nunn and Coplin were feeling the vamp and added their bread and butter to it, "Lonely Nights" was the result.

Debbie Taylor To Appear At The Scottish Weekender

Yogi has confirm that Debbie Taylor is to appear at the Scottish Weekender in Dunfries, November 4th, 5th, 6th. Tickets went on sale for this event two weeks ago and already two hotels (The Queensbury & Best Weston) there have sold out with around 400 tickets sold. The event will bring together some of the worlds top soul and soulful house DJ's over four rooms.

Tickets are availble from the main event site at the link below. I have posted this here as many people have told me that they were not aware tickets were on sale, we have constantly updated the post in the events section, but being down on the second page people have not seen it.

This is Scotland's first major soul weekender in many years and the response has been fantastic.

http://scottishsoulf...p/the-soul-hole

Debbie Taylor was born Maddie (pronounced Maydie) Bell Galvin in Norfolk, Virginia. As a young child she sang gospel in her father's church and toured nationally as a gospel singer while a teenager. Recognition led to recording contracts while she was still a teenager. From a brief marriage during her 20's, she changed her last name to Myles. To ensure the correct pronunciation of her first name, she adopted the phonetic version, Maydie. She currently resides in Connecticut where she is still actively singing under her real name, Maydie Myles. More information about her history and current activities can be found on her website, maydiemyles.com.

It's believed that Debbie Taylor first came to the attention of Decca records through her church singing. Her first recording with the Decca label in 1968 produced the tracks "I get the blues / The last laugh is on the blues" (Decca 32090) and Check yourself / Wait until I'm gone (Decca 32259). Neither track achieved much in the way of commercial success at the time of their release however today both are much sought after releases which give the earliest indications of a vocal talent that would beguile listeners worldwide.

She parted company with Decca and moved to the New York based GWP label
Research: Label Discography, http://soulfulkindamusic.net/gwp.htm which ran its affairs from 150 East 52nd Street. Her 1969 debut single with GWP "Never gonna let him know / Let's prove them wrong (GWP 501) was also the launch single for the label. In that year she also recorded the uptempo "Don't let it end / How long can this last" (GWP 510) and a flip side to the Hesitations single "No brag just fact" titled "Mamma look sharp" (GWP 512) which saw her showcase her vocal diversity in a style very reminiscent of the great Billie Holiday's interpretation of Strange fruit.

Despite having released three records in 1969 between then and 1972 she recorded and released only one further recording - "Don't nobody mess with my baby" / "Stop" on the GWP subsidiary label GWP Grapevine.

In 1972 she left the GWP label and was brought to the Perception / Today label by its then Vice President Boo Frazier and David Jordan. It was during her brief stint at Today that she recorded the seminal soul / funk album "Comin' down on You" with Vice President of A&R Patrick Adams and songwriter producer David Jordan providing not only musical direction in the shape of songs but also with Adams infusing the recordings with a soulful vibe that was to become his trademark.

Taylor's tenure with Today was another short stint. It resulted in the album Comin' down on You, and one single released from it. Many regard this as her most productive / prolific period as a singer. Her collaboration with Adams, the then manager / producer and co-writer for label matesBlack Ivory, resulted in her covering the track "No if's, and's or but's".[1]

In 1973 demo / promotional recordings on the Polydor label of the Mavis Staples track "I have learned to do without you" released on Volt Recordsin 1970 began to surface. The track was released that year with the flipside "Cheaper in the long run". Commercial success still eluded her and by 1975 she had moved to and was recording with Arista Records.

It was during this period with Arista that she recorded what many consider to be the soul single - a track in the classic Northern Soul style. "Just don't pay" backed by a phenomenal vocal performance of "I don't wanna leave you" - both tracks penned by David Jordan.

Don Varner 45 Out today May 31 2011

Shotgun Records most current 45 release is unleashed today
This release marks the first time out on 45 for this powerful version of "Power of Love" and is delivered by Don Varner ( penned by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham)
This 45 is now available via all the usual suspects online and beyond.

Paul m the man behind Selecta and Shotgun does mention in the pre-release forum thread both future plans and the thinking behind this fine release and the choice of sides.

"...will soon issue a series of Quinvy / South Camp albums on Selrec / Shotgun but first I want to release a few 45s to focus on some individual tracks that deserve special attention - such as Power Of Love '

" ...It was overlooked by many when it appeared on one of the Charly LPs back in 1989 but now I hope it will reach more people. For the Shotgun single I've remastered 'Power Of Love' from a 2-track stereo mixdown tape and I'm very pleased with the quality. It's rich, warm and punchy and should sound great in the clubs....."

"It would have been easy to issue 'Tear Stained Face' on Shotgun but it's always more of a challenge to create interest in something new or different. I chose 'Masquerade' for the flip side of this one but it was a difficult choice because Don cut so many great tracks at Quinvy - and I welcome any suggestions for future 45s and flip sides.that has plans to feature more..."

The full forum thread can be read here

The 100 Club is back!

The 100 Club is back!
I hope I am putting this into the right place, my first thoughts where to add to the look backs section but in the light of the 100 Club thread some time ago with Ady having concerns at numbers dropping and the real fear of the club closing down, I thought it appropriate to let people know what it's the real state of play as far as this wonderful and very important club.
We got a car full from the South Yorkshire Soul Searchers, great way to split the fuel costs and company is always good on a long journey from Sheffield to the Smoke.
We arrived, found free and easy parking and strolled around the corner to Oxford Street and The 100 Club. There was a crowd outside, great sight and one of the taken for granted sights of yester year!
The mood was infectious with smiles and warm handshakes and none of the perceived London standoffishness, a real Allnighter with the real deal in the house!
Clambering down those famous stairs and bang! The place is rammed and quite simply vibrant!! Is this really The 100 Club that was struggling last summer??
I promise you al faithfully that I am neither exaggerating nor am I on any agenda, The 100 Club is back!
The healthy mix of young and old and the complete crossing over from genre to genre that represents the best of what was and is British youth culture is finely represented and celebrated by The 100 Club but that is just the backdrop, the real fabric that holds all this together like some kind of funky glue is the music and it is here that the magic happens!
I am a regular Allnighter goer and most Allnightrers have their own flavour, The 100 Club if I am to be honest with myself, lost a bit of "Shine" for a while, or was it that the competition woke up? I am not sure but I am sure as eggs are eggs, The 100 Club is back with a beautiful vengeance!
My tip for this year is, get off yer bottoms and get to the oldest running Allnighter in the world, go to The 100 Club, you will not be disappointed I promise.

Today's Soulful Sound Of Detroit

It's always nice when a Record Promoter involves you in some pre-release tracks and that's what Dave Thorley did about four or five years ago when he handed me a local release CD of new music out of Detroit.

Now, some two years later, Dave & Malayka have managed to release not only tracks from that original CD but with the help from Detroit writer and arranger Tim King, have pulled together a great mix of sounds.

The stand out track was and still is The Funk Factor's "Give it What Cha Got" but it's a close runner with the likes of Faschone - "Come Inside", Forte - "Anytime You Need Love" and Anita Marie Hill's "Our Flame".

Modern Soul, R&B through 2step and love ballads, this album offers a great insight to the music being produced locally on theWestside of the city. From the sleevenotes you can clearly see this has gone through the hands of some notable Producers and Arrangers, seven in total and well over twenty musicians; it's goes to show the studio time these guys have put into the album.

Dave say's there's two format's that the album is available; LP and CD with the LP being a limited run, so for the vinyl addicts its best to get in touch with Dave at www.topdogrecords.co.uk as quick as possible, cos these are gonna sell.

Happy listening

Monitors - Say You - An Anthology

Hot on the heels of well-received projects by the Contours and Marv Johnson, Kent is delighted to bring you the altogether-splendid results of a further dip into the 1960s Motown archives, with the first ever CD by collector favourites the Monitors. * Although they consistently failed to achieve the promotion and success that was afforded to some of their more famed labelmates, the Monitors were among the finest groups to record for Berry Gordy's company during its golden era.

* Led by the soulful tenor of future Temptations member Richard Street, the three-boy, one-girl quartet was never among Motown's big chart hitters, but the comparatively few recordings the Monitors made in almost seven years with the company were and remain of the highest quality - and each of their five released singles deserved considerably more chart action than they got.

* "Say You!" - named for the group's V.I.P 45 - rounds up the Monitors' lone 1970 album for Motown's Soul label and adds a further 12 killer 60s tracks from the Detroit vaults, 10 of which are being released for the first time here.

* Across its contents you will also find a version of every Monitors A- and B-side, most of them being reissued in stereo for the first time.

* The package features a wealth of label shots and rare ephemera, with a sleeve note by Motown uberfan Keith Hughes that incorporates the recent reminiscences of Richard Street about his time as "head Monitor".

Love & Desire: Patrice Holloway Anthology

A superb set of releases from Kent in early June rounded off with the Patrice Holloway Anthology.

"Patrice was beautiful, she was sassy. She was extraordinarily creative and way ahead of her generation. I loved her very, very much." Motown producer Frank Wilson

What an adventure it was to write the liner notes for "Love & Desire: The Patrice Holloway Anthology"! I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the life of this fascinating unsung artist through interviews with a host of her legendary colleagues: stellar session vocalists such as Clydie King and Edna Wright as well as Motown icon Brenda Holloway, Patrice's sister. What emerged was a portrait of a singularly talented, spirited and fascinating young woman who was truly beloved by all who knew her.

What didn't emerge was the answer to an age-old riddle: Who sang backup behind Diana Ross on 'Someday We'll Be Together'? Brenda Holloway clearly hears her sister on the track, and Merry Clayton shared a vivid anecdote about rehearsing and recording it with Patrice. After the notes were sent to the printer, Motown stalwart Gloria Jones insisted that she had cut the vocals with Carolyn Willis and Patrice. Of course, the late producer Johnny Bristol claimed it was the Waters. File this one under Unsolved Mysteries.

But here's the biggest mystery: How did Patrice Holloway not become a superstar? "Love & Desire" showcases this brilliant vocal stylist on 25 rare tracks bursting with charisma and personality. Her complete output for Capitol is here: nine tracks released on five singles during two tenures with the label. 'Stolen Hours', 'Ecstasy' and 'Love And Desire' have long been Northern Soul favourites, and 1971's 'Evidence' and 'That's The Chance You Gotta Take' personify the "value for money" single. Another highlight is 1967's 'That's All You Gotta Do', written by future Motown luminary Willie Hutch.

Did I say Motown? An excursion into the Hitsville vaults has yielded a treasure trove of exciting rarities. A few have sneaked out on compilations in recent years, such as Patrice's original version of 'The Touch Of Venus', her duet with sister Brenda on 'Come Into My Palace' and her seldom-heard double-sided tribute to her teenage heartthrob, 'Stevie' and 'The Boy Of My Dreams'. (Incidentally, Brenda spills the beans in the booklet notes on her little sister's romance with young Mr Wonder.)

Ten Motown tracks see light for the first time anywhere. There's further flirtation with Stevie on a lively cover of his 'Surf Stomp', a Smokey-produced version of the Miracles' 'All That's Good' and an authoritative take on Mary Wells' 'My 2 Arms - You = Tears'. Barely in her teens when she committed these tracks to tape, Patrice is yearning and tender on 'Love Walked Right In' and boisterous on 'Flippitty Flop'. Versatility abounds over a wide variety of styles including doo wop ('Crying'), mid-60s pop ('The Go Gang') and testifying soul (the powerful 'I Got To Change').

As I said, everyone who knew Patrice loved her. I, too, came to love her while working on "Love & Desire". Now it's your turn.

What's Going On - 40 Years - Radio and Box Set Release

Today May 21st 2011 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On album.

While there could be a case made that the over-promotion of such minor anniversary's in the mainstream media actually lessens the significance of the more notable ones, I suspect that such a viewpoint is more of a generation based one. The reaction of one younger member of my household (who has only recently 'discovered' this album) to the news of the 40 year mark and the below release certainly differed from my own.

Anyway to mark this event two notable events to pass on

One - The forthcoming release of a "super deluxe box set" by motown/universal to mark the occasion.

This 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition contains 2 CDs + Vinyl LP + Gatefold Booklet with Rare Photos, Lyrics and New Essays.
Highlights include:
* A remastered version of the album plus 28 bonus tracks - 16 unreleased.
* Original mono versions of the LP's hit singles.
* A previously unreleased original `Quality Control test mix' of "What's Going On," mixed before Marvin had added strings, horns and additional vocals.
* Several pre-album outtakes, recorded while Marvin was "on strike," waiting for his single to be released, including "Head Title," now in unedited form for the first time.
* Several post-album instrumental jams with local musicians who included Ray Parker Jr. - a series of recordings made in Detroit before Marvin followed Motown to Los Angeles.
* The original single version of a sequel to the album, "You're The Man," as well as two alternate versions.
* The album's rare, original "Detroit Mix," previously issued on CD for the 30th anniversary, now on vinyl for the first time.

The original announced release date was said to be during this month May 2011, however amazon are now running a june 7th date.

amazon us link @ $45 (the uk has a very high price tag ?)

Two - BBC world service show are broadcasting a radio show presented by Smokey Robinson (which am fairly sure was broadcast earlier as part of a series)

What's Going On - Music That Defined A Decade
To mark the 40th anniversary of one of the most influential albums ever released, Marvin Gaye's What's Going On - which was released in May 1971 - Smokey Robinson explores the social and political impact of this classic album and explains why Marvin's masterpiece still has resonance today.

Candi Staton - The Complete Fame Records Recordings - Kent Cd

Candi Staton The Complete Fame Records Recordings

And so it begins, for the past five years Ace and Kent have been working towards a deal with Rick Hall's Fame Records and studio to release their catalogue, whilst for the past year we have been working in the Muscle Shoals studio transferring masters. This will result in a series of astounding releases the first of which is Candi Staton: The Complete Fame Recordings.

This includes all 48 tracks that she recorded for Fame Records between late 1968 and early 1974 when she signed to Warner Brothers. 22 of these tracks have never been CD before, and of those 12 are previously unreleased. These include the indemand dancer 'One More Hurt', 'Do Right Man' an insanely good slice of southern sister funk and her take on Donnie Fritt's 'We Had It All', which is southern soul at its very deepest.

It comes with a stunning 20 page booklet full of previously unseen photos and rare European picture sleeves.

In The Basement Obituary

The world of soul is full of Obituaries.
Nothing lasts forever...only one thing I thought...'In The Basement'...
THE Soul Magazine.
I was wrong!
An email from David Cole to thank me for contrubutions and support over the
years was followed by the information that Issue 62 was due soon....but that
Issue 65 would be the last...

I quote David's comments.

"...it has not been a money-making venture - nor was it ever intended
to be - but it has now reached a position where it is no longer
possible to break even and that is a situation I cannot sustain in
perpetuity. It would be easy to lay the blame on the internet - and
that has certainly been a contributory factor to the loss of several
retail outlets on which I relied to sell, often to the more casual
buyer, plus the encouragement of a 'wanting something for nothing'
mentality among certain folks who might previously have been happy to
pay for the written word - but other things also come into the
equation. There have been outlets and advertisers who think that
there is no obligation to pay invoices, there are ever-increasing
production and distribution costs and there are the annual draconian
hikes in postage...[plus] the recession and all its consequences..."

No doubt many readers will be sad to hear this...if they subscribed to this
wonderful, essential, magazine.

Comments to this post are welcomed...but only if you subscribed...others take a
moment to reflect...maybe you should have.
It's TOO Late now!

Regards

Barry

Prestatyn - October 2011 Cancelled

Don't know if this is the right forum to post this on

I was informed this afternoon that the October "Legends" event is not going to take place
Have been waiting to hear from Pontins since the March event
The reason I was given was that "The New Owners" have said that the costs for the event were too high.
I have not been given any official statement to publish, however I felt that people should be made aware of the situation at the earliest opportunity

I have no news or information on next years March event yet but as soon as I am informed I will post on this site

Not being a user of facebook or other social networking sites I have asked some friends who use these sites and have asked them to post the news

O.c. Tolbert

Available now, had mine a week or two and got to say it's a great testament to OC who has done quite a range of Soul and Gospel tinged Soul music. The Rare Soul/Northern Soul Scene will be familiar with I'm Shooting High (I Reach For The Sky), a big record for Rob Marriott back in the late 80's early 90's when played from an acetate. "All I Want Is You" and (for me) superior, more soulful version than that of JT Rhythm's Palmer release should be familiar too. Others have seen a previous release on earlier Dave Hamilton compilations by Ace/Kent, one of the best for me is Along came A Woman which has some potential in my opinion. His Powerhouse (king Diamond) release will also be familiar.

All in all another great compilation from Ace/Kent with something like ten previously unreleased (in any format) tracks plus other only released in recent years via Kent make this an essential purchase!!

Below is the blurb from Kent's site (hope you don't mind Ady?)

01 LET ME BE YOUR ONLY MAN
02 THAT'S ENOUGH
03 YOU GOTTA HOLD ON ME
04 I'M SHOOTING HIGH (I REACH FOR THE SKY)
05 YOU GOT ME TURNED AROUND
06 A MESSAGE TO THE BLACK WOMAN
07 GOODNESS
08 MESSAGE TO MANKIND
09 ROUGH SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN
10 WHERE WERE YOU?
11 GIVE IT TO GLORY
12 THAT'S ALL SHE WROTE
13 HARD TIMES
14 THE GROWN FOLKS THING
15 FIX IT
16 EVERYBODY WANTS TO DO THEIR OWN THING
17 ALONG CAME A WOMAN
18 RIDE THE GOSPEL TRAIN
19 BACK TO THE DUST
20 SOMEBODY IS HERE WITH ME
21 I'LL TAKE IT ALL
22 ALL I WANT IS YOU

It is odd to have lived with an artist's work for many years, admiring their talents, gleaning little bits of information about them here and there, but failing to get a full picture of their career. Then suddenly things drop into place and the mists clear.

That is how the process has been in seeing O.C. Tolbert's solo compilation come to fruition over the last few months. Firstly, a 1-inch master tape was randomly copied and turned out to feature some great songs that we had not previously realised were Dave Hamilton's work. Then the Damn Sam The Miracle Man Tayster LP and the Tolbert Rojac singles became better known and documented. Finally a trawl through some of Dave Hamilton's half-inch tapes revealed more un-annotated recordings. But we were still missing the vital ingredient: a family member who could fill us in on O.C.'s career details from birth to his death in 1996.

I had regularly tried the soul scene's various web sites and information groups for details of O.C.'s life, but consistently came up with blanks. Then Eric LeBlanc - a music historian, good friend of Ace and something of a sleuth - provided me with five addresses of close relations, to whom I sent detailed letters requesting any information they could muster. Months passed and there was no word, so I decided to carry on regardless and do the best job I could on Dave Hamilton's top male singer. Out of the blue an e-mail arrived from a Danish journalist resident in New York named Andreas Vingaard, who was researching Jack Taylor, the second of O.C.'s producers, and wondered what information we could provide him with for a forthcoming article. We got together, pooled our resources to quite an extent, and chased the family even harder. This paid off with only a couple of weeks to go to the deadline, when Andreas made contact with O.C.'s widow, Velma, and a telephone interview was arranged.

Apart from filling out the early and later years of O.C.'s life, about which we knew very little, Velma was actually involved as a co-writer on several tracks that we were to feature. Though never a part of the recording sessions, she remembered the songwriting and sequence of musical events very well. She furnished us with photos that have further improved a very substantial booklet and put us right on several points; though it turned out that a lot of the speculation was near to the truth. Her granddaughter, Myesha, was involved in getting the music, photos and information between the two countries and the whole saga was an emotional journey for all concerned.

For Velma, hearing tracks such as the original take of 'Let Me Be Your Only Man' and the tender ballad 'I'll Take It All' was very bittersweet and rekindled all sorts of memories. For us soul fans it is a pleasure to have all his first major works on one compilation. Although the recordings stretch from 1968 to 1988, the power of O.C.'s tremendous voice makes the date of the recording low in relevance compared to the majesty of his singing. Tracks that have been dotted about on producer Dave Hamilton's various artist compilations have had their audio revisited and further enhanced and putting them into one collection highlights their brilliance. 'You Got Me Turned Around' is shown to be a true powerhouse of a song, while 'I'm Shooting High' is mid-tempo Detroit soul at its very best. Gospel numbers such as 'Rough Side Of The Mountain' and 'Somebody Is Here With Me' fit in with the secular songs and his religious opus, 'Give It To Glory', is nothing short of sensational and ripe for more serious DJ attention; it is a new mix from the multi-track master that we feature this time around.

Both sides of the excellent Rolyak 45 are heard in a new, brass-led, mix and we found a finished vocal version of 'The Grown Folks Thing', previously only known in an abbreviated form. 'Fix It' is a brand new slab of funk-edged soul and 'Message To The Black Woman' is as good a 70s dancer with a moral as you will hear. Though primarily a 70s artist in musical style, Dave Hamilton recorded him initially on some earlier backing tracks circa 1966 and his reading of 'All I Want Is You' is magnificent mid-tempo deep soul singing. The similarly constructed but contemporaneously recorded 'That's Enough' and 'That's All She Wrote' are equally worthy. Less than a third of the songs have actually been issued on Kent and most of those are in improved sound quality.

This release will inevitably tease out a few more O.C. and Dave Hamilton facts from family and friends. Luckily we have found plenty more Dave Hamilton recordings to be able to update soul fans and music historians on future CDs. Until then revel in a truly unique and inspiring soul singer.

Philly Re-Grooved Vol 2 - Amazon Link

When we released "Philly Re-Grooved - The Tom Moulton Remixes" back in August 2010, we had little idea of how it would perform in today's notoriously fickle marketplace. Would today's audiences be capable of appreciating the skills and talents of a guy who was at the forefront of Dance Music history some 40 years ago? Would current audiences be able to understand the subtle nuances and musical interactions of a pioneer mixing records from a bygone era in today's age of instant gratification? In short, would there be ANY kind of audience?

The answer to all the above questions was a resounding YES, and then some. "Philly Re-Grooved" Volume 1 was a special release in many ways. Not only was it the 100th release in the 15 year history of Harmless Records but it was also very much a mark of respect to the greatest Remixer of all-time, Tom Moulton. Whilst this would be of great significance to people of the 1960's and 70's, there was really no guarantee that interest in the release would go much beyond the core audience of Disco stalwarts from back in the day. Little did we realise that "Philly Re-Grooved" Volume 1 touched a very significant nerve with ANYONE who loved dance music in the summer of 2010. After decades of being force-fed computer-driven dance music by bedroom producers who decided that they could take the place of professional songwriters, producers, arrangers and musicians, there was a sudden thirst for REAL productions again, namely the kind of records which required consummate experts to craft them and often full orchestras of 40 plus musicians to bring the songs to life. "Philly Re-Grooved" went straight into the UK Top 100 and has been one of Harmless' biggest catalogue-sellers ever since!

So welcome to "Philly Re-Grooved - The Tom Moulton Mixes - Volume 2: The Master Returns". Once again Tom goes back to the golden age of 70's Philly and shows his skills on key tracks from First Choice, Quickest Way Out, Ultra High Frequency, Moment Of Truth, Loose Change, TJM and Terry Collins to create another masterpiece and perfect companion to Volume 1.

Out in 3 weeks!

George Rountree Needs Our Help

George Roundtree, Detroit producer and current music director for the Four Tops. Is currently in intensive care in Illinois. See a note that Ronnie McNeir sent round on Facebook. As you may know health care in the U.S. is a nightmare, so any help would be appreciated

To All Friends, Family and working Associates of George "Tree" Rountree. Musical Conductor of The Four Tops

Our long time friend George (aka Tree) Rountree, conductor of The Four Tops fo...r the last 33 years is in need of your prayers and financial support. Tree recently went to Illinois for a routine Four Tops and Temptations concert date. By the time he arrived, he went into extreme kidney failure; he was taken to a local hospital ICU in Moline, Illinois. It is reported that his condition is extremely critical. As most of you know, Tree has under gone two kidney transplants.
Doctors are trying everything to keep him from going into a coma state.

Recent economic times have brought a lot of financial short comings for George and his wife Beverly. As a result there is nothing left in the money jar for rent, food, utilities or even airfare for Beverly to go be with her husband. I am asking, if you are able, to extend a prayer and money offering to help them in this moment of greatest need.

Tree with The Four Tops has touched many of our lives. Here is an opportunity to give back and touch his. A Paypal account is set up to accept your donations on behalf of the Rountrees.

Comments on two of the artists...

Cyndee Peters is a Swedish singer, but she was born in North Carolina, US, migrated in the 60´s marrying a Swedish man, and was partly responsible for popularising gospel/black culture in Sweden.

Loni Gamble is from Philadelphia (a talented musician who used to play behind The Stylistics etc.), does anyone know if there is a family connection between him and the legendary PIR Gamble?!

Until next time - take care fellow soulies...

Welcome To Dj Melismo´s New Blog!

soul, soul music, podcasts, mixes
Hi all!
Here´s my newly launched blog, where you can read about all things soulful, seen through the eyes and heard through the ears of DJ Melismo

First a short introduction to who I am. In the world of soul music I call myself DJ Melismo, but my real name is Mats Olofsson and I reside in Sweden. I´ve worked with all possible aspects of our music - keeping myself busy working as a singer, songwriter, producer, musician, journalist, radio host, radio station manager, record dealer, dj etc. I´ve never been interested in the money making aspect so for the most part I have earned my living holding down a regular daytime job as a teacher, and I´ve also been active as a local politician for the last ten years or so. Back in the day I hosted a soul show on Sweden´s first (legal) commercial radio station and I´ve been a singer since my pre-teens starting my first band in 1981, later touring with a number of different bands performing at various venues and festivals. During the last few years due to the possibilities of the Internet, I´ve revived my DJ career by compiling and publishing monthly podcasts featuring eclectic mixes of soul from all eras, these podcast mixes can be found on various sites such as:
http://melismo.podomatic.com
http://listen.to/soulmusic
http://soulmixes.blogspot.com
http://flickr.com/photos/alexs4r

If you´re on Facebook, you can type "Melismo" and join the Melismo group, or search for my real name Mats Olofsson if you want to add me as a friend.

Hope you´ll enjoy this blog, will try to update as often as I can.

Until next time
Wishing you all the best

Europe And Beyond - The Rare Soul Scene - Oslo soul experience

Part 2 of Europe and beyond.. The rare soul scene guide to whats on over the water..

Oslo Soul Experience

Paid this place a visit in for the anniversary a few years back, another great time in a fantastic rooftop venue that overlooks the city, this venue is used for the Anniversary events.. A good mixed younger crowd, and a very healthy mix of sounds from 60s northern to modern soul.. The other guests on the night were James Trouble, Ian Wright and Marco, all gave the place a glowing report.. A quality overseas soul experience for me..

Feel free to add to this post if you have any experience of the event or need some info on events coming up/ travel details and places to stay...

A brief guide to the Oslo soul experience from Tommy........

"Oslo Soul Experience was launched august 2003 and it's a monthly across the board soul club held in the basement pub of John Dee. Their goal is to serve up the very best in forgotten quality black soul music from the 60s, 70s and early 80s -Northern, crossover, modern, latin soul and funk.

The guys behid the club is; Tommy SÃÆ’¸vik, GÃÆ’¸ran Sofienlund and BjÃÆ’¸rn Espen, all of them deep into collecting rare stuff on the 7inch format. The club has had a lot of guest Djs over the years where some of the «bigger» names was Ian Wright, Butch, Mick H, Marc Forrest and Matt Winegarden".
Next dates on the regular nights in 2011..... 30th. of April, 28th. of May and 18th of June.
The weekender where they celebrate the 8th anniversary is 2nd. and 3rd. of September, special guest DJ to be confirmed..

About Al Kent :
Al Kent was born in Scotland. His father was an avid record collector and had a cabinet full of them. And Whisky. Everything from Abba and Elvis to the Glitter Band and Buddy Holly was in there. What a load of shit they were.

In 1976 Al ran away from home to live in New York. Here, at the age of 8 he started attending the Loft and hanging out with Nicky Siano and a whole bunch of cool New York DJs with Italian names. In 1978 he was arrested for possession of PCP while guesting at Better Days with Tee Scott and deported back to Glasgow, where his dad was now getting into a bit more David Essex. He was shit too.

So Al opened his own club in Glasgow, based on his experiences in New York. With his pocket money he flew Richard Long over to kit it out and had Walter Gibbons DJ at the opening party. Since then he's bought lots of records, done the deejaying in lots of places, and recorded an orchestra too.

For the full story of The Million Dollar Orchestra see their biography, in short the album was recorded in the traditional way, mostly one take, in an analogue studio. The Sound is rich , lush, string laden, beautiful disco music, full of joy with phenomenal musicianship. It is Al Kent's biography told in Music.

Al is currently working with Lynn from Ebonycuts on a time machine. This project should be completed soon, at which point the two will travel back in time and buy lots of records.

6TS Cleethorpes Northern and Modern Soul Weekender 2011

The 6TS Cleethorpes Northern & Modern Soul Weekender is proud to announce that our live acts for our 19thweekender on June 10th-12th 2011 will be Sandi Sheldon, Derek Martin and Noel McCoy.

I have been keen to see Sandi, who also sang under her real name Kendra Spotswood aka Kenni Woods, for many years. I missed her at her London performance at the Rocket some years ago and have regretted it ever since. Apart from her own records she was the lead singer on the Vonettes' stormer 'Touch My Heart', was the Charmaines (the name attributed to her acetate demo) on 'Standing In The Need Of Love' and was VanMcCoy's right hand girl throughout his soul career. She will perform a tribute to Van's incredible career too.

Derek Martin is a major soul act who has never visited the UK. From his first record, the original mod classic 'Daddy Rollin' Stone' to his 100 Club Sue favourite 'If You Go' and on through his Roulette years, when he cut records of the quality of 'Breakaway' and the beautiful ballad 'You'd Better Go', he has delivered stunning soul sounds that have been hugely appreciated in Europe. His oddball Stax/Tuba release 'Sly Girl' is a personal favourite with an irresistible beat and a clutch of recently (10 years ago!) discovered acetates from his mentor Teddy Randazzo's publishing company have included the brilliant 'Flashback', 'Baby What Changed Your Mind' and 'I Can't Take It No More'. He also sang several great early 70s tracks for Buttercup and All Platinum labels so it will be a matter of "What the hell do we leave out?"

Noel McCoy is a poorly kept music business secret, a young black Londoner with as soulful avoice as I've heard in years. He has been recording for a few years now and modern soul fans probably know him better than their 60s counterparts. I caught him at a recent London soul-dance gig where he entered the stage with much confidence and launched into a ballad. I thought that was too ambitious, but he had caught everyone'sattention in seconds and had them in the palm of his hand by the finish. His next song was a terrific 60s styled stomper that also oozed soul and I was won over. He has worked with Ian Levine recently (as has Sandi of course) and is now working with new band New Street Adventure who have written a tribute to the 100 Club nighters among others. I thought it would be good to let him show the Cleethorpes crowd what he can do.
