City Soul - Sheffield and Bangor Event News

As things have started falling in to place at long last on here , you should be seeing the news and articles section on here getting a kick up the arse and getting back to how it should be
Some tale of two cities style event news
Next month see's the return of the once regular Bangor Soul Nghts. Now with a new team taking it on they are returning on the first Friday of February and will be held on a bi-monthly format. Its same place as the last series ie the Con Club, but word is that the room has been greatly extended, it now takes in that back bar as well. Fresh team, better venue..  got to be worth a visit if in area
Word from the forum is that the classy venue Qube in town centre is in the  thick of things soul wise in Sheffield, with it now the new home of the regular Vault Of Soul nights and also Mick H being involved with putting on a alldayer on Sunday March 23rd Bank Holiday. Went to one of the charity alldayers last year and was well impressed with the two room venue.
Can read Vault Of Soul and Micks words on the forum thread here

New Forum Open in the Soul Source - The Sharp End

A fair few bits of site news coming up over next day or so
First off is word of a new forum setup and at long last now fully intergrated with the site and fully open.

The new forum is called "Sharp End of Vinyl" and can be found in its new home via the look at your box forum.
Its just been set up and is being looked after by long time member Roger Blythe -who you may know better via his member name 45cellar
(members profile link https://www.soul-source.co.uk/index.php?showuser=2311)

Many members will be aware of his many informative posts over the years on all sorts of vinyl related subjects, often with label scans and such.
Thanks go out to Chalky, who made a suggestion after Roger has started a new series of posts, that it could be a worthwhile resource if all such posts were posted in a seperate section.
Big thanks to Roger who when talked to him about the possibilties of this, quickly stepped up to the line and agreed to take it on and look after such a place.

The forums already been running for a few days, and as its now offically open, showing on front page. in the new search index, it should in the near future be a valuable and worthwhile resource for all soul fans

Anyway enough of my words here's Rogers intro from the forum.

Words from Roger:

Welcome, everyone.

The aim of this sub forum is to concentrate on information relating to the collecting of original records.
All relevant details relating to original records are worthy of a mention on here. So, please feel free to input and discuss.
There is a wealth of knowledge on this forum and together we can compile a reference for all.

I shall continue to scan, photograph and provide information with as much detail as I am able.

The Bootleg Guide is of course an essential purchase, beyond the information here.

Can view the new forum via link below

100 Club 19th January 2008 all-nighter - 3am closing time

News of a change to djs and hours for the 100 Club January event
Dear 6TS goer,
Unfortunately the manager of the 100 Club applied for our all-nighter extension a day too late and despite our excellent reputation and record over the years, the police licensing authorities refused to allow us any leeway. We therefore have to finish the night at the club's latest licensed closing time of 3 am. We will be starting proceedings at 9pm.

This will not affect future 100 Club all nighter dates that will all go ahead as planned; the management have assured me that they will be applying well in time and I'll be checking each time now.

However I know this will cause problems for quite a few of you who have pre-booked trains, planes, baby-sitters etc. and for this the club management and I apologise profusely. We were going to pull the gig completely but realised we can still have a great late soul night, though it won't be the usual all nighter feel; more of a cross between that and the Xmas party. It will also mean that people who are coming to London anyway can have a good night out.

Because of all this we are reducing the price of admission from £12 to £8 and have adapted the DJ line up as Butch, Mick H and Russ are better suited to all nighters and we have moved their appearances to the next nighter on March 8th which will be at the new permanent nighter time of 10pm-6am. Mick and I will still be serenading you with our soul numbers, (I've just acquired a great new unissued Brooks O'Dell Columbia track, perfect for the 100 Club) as usual, and we've added 40th birthday boy, long time 100 Club stalwart, Dome maestro and top London 60s club DJ Alan Handscombe to the roster. We'll be adding another top DJ too; I'll E-mail further details and check out www.6ts.info for updates.

Many apologies once more, but in true 6TS style "the soul must go on".
I really appreciate your continued support over so many great years and hopefully will see y'all down those hallowed steps on the 19th.

Ady

Bridlington 2008 - Something new to do 2 - Yorkshire Weekender

Bridlington 2008   "Something new to do" 2 Yorkshire Weekender
The East Coast Soul Collective Soul Club are proud to present the sequel to the most talked about event of 2007.
The second Bridlington Northern Soul Weekender will happen on Friday 27th to Sunday 29th of "sunny" June 2008. In the tradition seaside resort of Bridlington in Yorkshire's East Riding.
We will be moving to our new home in the fabulous newly re-furbished Bridlington Spa Pavilion on South Marine Drive.
The building has undergone a £18.5 million regeneration over the past 3 years to make it Yorkshire's most talked about & premier event venue.
Keeping to the original design of the 1920's Building and adding a few 21st Century touches this is now a "state of the art" facility and still retains all the original charm of a true dancehall. div divspanThe main ballroom reputedly has the largest dance floor in EUROPE and it has been totally renewed to its original specifications thus providing a perfect platform for Northern soul dancing at its very best. We are dedicating this main room as "Totally Northern Soul"
Keeping with the "Yorkshire" theme our DJ line up in the main room represents some of the best of England's largest County's talent. With ex-Wigan Casino DJ Pat Brady and Samantha's star John Vincent both wearing the white rose with pride. Rob Wicks, Yockie, & Mort are flying the flag for the S.Yorkshire contingent plus John Parker & Tony Hatfield represent the County City of York and Dukesy making the trip down the coast from Scarborough.
With an invasion being lead in convoy up the M62 by Annesley's Pete Taylor representing Sherwood Forest, Glynn Sissons, Rob Smith & Rob Wigley will all be heading north for the weekend wearing the outlaws Lincoln green (although not the tights we might add !).
We will also be taking the opportunity to feature several Yorkshire Soul Clubs during the Weekender details of which will be published later in the year.
With the change of venue brings the chance to add a second room to the event, which will be playing the best in Crossover & Modern Soul
And will again featuring a wealth of Yorkshires finest.
Exiled Yorkshire man Sean Hampsey will be teaming up with his Pitches right hand man Andy "Tats" Taylor alongside Modernism's Martin Dixon and Errol Green. Making the journey from Lancashire will be John Kane playing the current floor-fillers and crowd pleasers. Rob Wigley will be double-shifting and further guest to be confirmed as the event draws closer.
We firmly believe that this event is the best value for money soul event in the UK.span
As a part of that commitment to the scene we have held the admission to last years bargain price of £20 for the FULL WEEKEND when purchased in advanced by ticket.
We can also offer a "Mini-Bus" special for parties of 12 people travelling together which is a "Buy 10 get 2 free" offer. Please note this offer can only be purchased from the Organisers ticket outlet and NOT via the Spa Box Office credit card hotline.
We had rave revues on our 2007 first event in Bridlington and ticket sales have already exceeded the 500 mark for 2008 as I write this.

Bobby Relf Obituary in the Times

Thanks to Keith for passing on a link to a Times Online article regarding the recent sad news of Bob Relf passing away

Clip from the article
Behind Relf’s belated success lay a long and varied history as a vocal group singer in Los Angeles, where he was born in 1937. Robert Relf was attending Fremont High School in 1954 when he got together with his fellow pupils Sam Jackson, Ted Brown and Ronald Brown to form the Laurels
They got the chance to record the following year with the ballad Yours Alone for the LA-based Flair label. The group next recorded as backing singers for the R&B star Jesse Belvin before performing a similar task for the blues star Peppermint Harris. The Laurels had the opportunity to record by themselves again for the RCA X label and rounded off a busy year with discs on the Combo and Cash labels.,,

Visiting Detroit By Rob Moss Part 5

People who reside in the largest city, or the capital, of a country seem to have a pompous air of superiority and an apparent belief that they are, in some way, better than their fellow citizens. This is certainly true in Britain, where most Londoners appear to believe that they are life’s leaders — the special, ‘chosen’ ones who were sent to civilize and refine the rest of us. How else could the BBC ‘Soul Britania’ television series manage to attribute the entire development of black music in our country to the people and places in the capital? In America, people from New York and Los Angeles hold this ominous distinction, and in Canada it is undoubtedly the residents of Toronto who strut around in a state of bloated haughtiness and self-importance; thus prompting the following witticism. Question. How many people from (insert name of large city) does it take to screw in a light bulb? Answer. One — they hold the bulb and the world revolves around them. A similar philosophy tends to exist in the music industry, although today, all forms of competition from independent companies has been extinguished as the few corporate ‘giants’ have all major markets safely dominated, and control is firmly centred in Los Angeles. It wasn’t always so however.

At the dawn of modern musical development, in the 1950s, when mass consumption of recorded works began, it was possible for small independent companies to have a shot at the big time. One of the largest niche markets nationally has always been the indigenous black population, and thousands of small independents emerged to exploit the financial potential contained therein. Labels like Atlantic Records in New York, Chess in Chicago, Duke/Peacock in Houston and King in Cincinnati were early pacesetters. ...

note from the soul source team - sorry but all Robs non-current articles are now clipped due to a future book release - watch out for news of that!

The History of the Fabulous Peps

The History of the Fabulous Peps by Joe ( Pep) Harris.
Although we were inevitably mistaken for Gladys Knight's Pips, The Peps were vocally more akin to The Impressions, but pigeonholing them as another opportunistic copycat group would be a mistake, their high-energy live performances defined the 60's all-singing-all-dancing groups that relentlessly toured the USA during that go-go decade.
The three of us turned professional at Thelma Records around 1962, cutting a few 45s and doing background on various sessions. Before that we were all involved in singing around Detroit, Ronnie Abner used to be in The Vibratones, I "Little Joe" Harris sang lead on one of Robert West's Bumble Bee label records - "Trouble In A Candy Store" - and Tommy Hester had won talent show contests during the late 50s and sang with The Turnpikes.

We joined Mike's D-Town setup around 1965 with a hard-earned reputation as one of the Motor City's liveliest acts and weren't labelled Fabulous for nothing. Back-flips, jumps, spins and splits peppered our live shows, we inadvertently got likened to Curtis Mayfield's seminal group. "Tommy and Ronnie had the soft high tenor and I had the Jerry-Butler, Fred-Cash sound, so we sounded like The Impressions, in fact our range was higher than theirs. We do one Impressions' song a show, and the rest is us. But record-wise. everybody wanted us to sound like The Impressions!
During our spell at Thelma we travelled down to Dayton, Ohio where we took root for about a year and started to develop an identity. We fine tuned our slick moves and learned the ropes of performing while singing with Robert Ward's accomplished group, The Ohio Untouchables. Once we were back in Detroit we continued to add finishing touches to our routine.
We cut a wall-to-wall drum and bass Wheelsville 45, "Love Of My Life," that was also released in '65. Ronnie penned and sang lead on "My Love Looks Good On You" - our up-tempo, 1966, D-Town disc - and by then guitarist "Little Charlie" Herndon had become an integral part of the group's act and we were sometimes billed as The Four Peps. We gradually drifted away from Mike and started to revolve around Pete Hall, who I remember sent us down to Memphis to add some southern-soul flavor to our recordings.

Our version of "Gypsy Woman" was released on Premium Stuff and another admiral cover of an Impressions' classic, "I've Been Trying," was If I remember correctly, cut at the same time, this latter song was released on the Wee 3 label in 1967 and that May we paraded it at Detroit's famed Chit Chat Lounge where the resident Funk Brothers backed us.
Although Motown had periodically invited us to join Hitsville's stack of talent, we steadfastly refused to sign to simply end up on the proverbial shelf. But after almost a decade of singing together I eventually left in 1971 to front The Undisputed Truth, hitting the big-time with Norman Whitfield's sublime "Smiling Faces Sometimes."

It's a pleasure to be back on stage again as the Fabulous Peps , I just loved those early days and the music In Detroit , The peps have always had a soft spot in my heart even though I had bigger hits with the Undisputed Truth and winning a grammy award , Its all come back again to me. Thanks to The Fabulous peps and I'm really looking forward to meeting the Uk fans at New Century Soul at Wolverhampton on Saturday 26th January 2008. I would like to thank my dear friend Hitsville Chalky and promoter Chris Waterman for making this all happen again.
Joe ( Pep) Harris.

With an as expected lower crowd in the two non-oldies rooms (Due to Winsford clashing with yet another Allnighter) Johnny Beggs decided to combine them for a better atmosphere.
At first I thought this would be a bad idea, but it did seem to work pretty well considering the diverse tastes of the people attending.
I know the R&B / Early Soul DJ's did hold back on some of the more obscure and gritty stuff, so's not to offend those who were into later sounding Soul, and it appeared Andy Whitmore and Dean Anderson tailored there sets accordingly (the sign of a customer orientated DJ, the way it should be).
I stuck to a more 60s Soul set than usual, but enjoyed it no less.
A good atmos in that room, but the oldies room was dead - a complete change from the previous month.... are the Dinosaurs finally dying out?
All in all an enjoyable night, made so as much by the company, as the sounds.
Playlist to follow.
May 28th Hideaway And The Non-cis, Manchester.
Posted by , 10 June 2005 ·
Was planning on going to the Hideaway for a couple of hours, then onto the CIS, but as everone is probably aware, events at CIS put the kybosh on this plan.
People seemed genuinely angry at Chris the promoter, blaming him for 'ruining their weekend'.... my thoughts on this - get a fcuking life.... it's only a night out.
Chris and the rest of his team obviously put loads of effort into providing quality events, and for people to call him for things beyond his control is well out of order.
A bit of respect for a guy who is willing to stand outside the venue on the night and personally apologise to anyone arriving and point them in the direction of a free venue, is called for.
So with the cancellation of CIS i was forced to stay at the Hideaway and witness Mace running around sweating and Karate chopping all and sundry (due to him seeing a book called 'Kung Fu Mace').
A good night, with some quality early soul and R&B played.

Samanthas May 21st
Posted by , 10 June 2005 ·
With the late notice of cancellation of 'Back Beat' by the new owners of Sheridans, I was at a loose end for a change...
Samanthas was on in Sheffield, so I thought I might as well give it a go.
In some ways I'd wished I'd stayed at home...
The extensive refurb turned out to be a load of sheets hung all over the walls and ceilings, making the place look like the decorators had left half way through the job, leaving their dust sheets in situ.
Due to a lower than expected turn out, the two rooms were combined giving an oldies heavy balance in my opinion... and not very good ones at that.
The record room was reasonably busy, but it was mainly a case of trades as there wasn't much cash changing hands.
To my eyes (and ears) JV has got this place and the 'Sheffield' scene all wrong...
He's trying to promote a more forward thinking venue in what is effectively a stinking oldies backwater.
It just doesn't work... the 'punters' don't want it, and I can see them staying away in droves.
If I were JV I'd promote the main room as Samanthas Oldies, then open the second room as 'current sounds' not vice versa.
Mind you if I were him I'd also drop quite a few of the resident DJs as they don't do him any favours... there's Oldies, Mouldy Oldies and Jurassic Oldies... and unfortunately a lot of the plays fall into the latter category.

The Big Un - Saturday 14th Of May
Posted by , 10 June 2005 · 4 views
Ever done something then regretted it afterwards?
I have on far too many occasions.
This time I accepted DJ bookings at the SSCDT Alldayer in Derby, the NMD annual Alldayer in Thringstone, and Steam allnighter in Crewe.... all on the same day...
Never one to let anyone down when I've accepted a job, I decided to grab the bull by the horns and do all of the jobs regardless of logistics.
First off was the SSCDT all dayer in Derby.
Set off in plenty of time to get there well before my set, but roadworks and crap drivers put paid to this, so I was cutting it a little fine...
Managed to get there about 15 minutes before my set, sink a pint of shandy then get on with the job at hand....
Playlist to follow.
Played a pretty safe Northern set as I was one of the first on and wanted to create a bit of an atmosphere.
Had one very drunken dancer throughout the majority of my set.
Time for a quick natter with everyone, then off to NMD for a few hours.
This time I managed to get there well before my spot so I was able to enjoy listenening to a full set, and chat with quite a few people.
(Mainly putting faces to computer IDs)
No More Doggin' is an excellent club run by Kev Connellan and Steve Johnson, that plays rare 60s Soul and R&B, but unfortunately this place does not seem to get the support it deserves, no worries today though as due to plenty of 'plugging' the place filled up nicely, with quite a few dancers as well.
Went up and did my spot... a full on R&B set.... as that seemed to be doing the business.
Playlist to follow.
Time for a few more chats, a pint or two of lemonade and sell a few tunes before it was back to the SSCDT alldayer.
Now 4 hours isn't really a long time in the scheme of things, but 4 hours of a bunch of loonies mixing with seriously high levels of alcohol, led to the place resembling a bomb-site inhabited by a troop of marauding chimpanzees.
A great time was had by all, including Janine who had managed to pull off a double bluff and actually turn up.
As the witching hour approached it was time for the final leg of the marathon soul session... so off to Crewe we went...
Arrived at Steam to find it a little down on numbers, but a busy Oldies room.
The R&B room was at about its usual level throughout the night, even during Mace's spot.
Playlist to follow.
Left Crewe at 5am feeling a little tired, and managed to get all the way back to Sheffield before seven thirty, despite being Kamikazee'd by a big fat Wood Pigeon.

Great night out.... don't remember too much of it as Bladeforlife was designated driver (which was nice), so I managed to partake in the great Kronenberg Bier Blond that they have started serving down there.
Usual high standard of tunes that get played at this venue...
Shame it's quite so intimate!
The late licence cock-up was a shame, but like true Troopers, we all decamped to a bar a few doors away for a couple more beers and lots more banter.
A steady journey home via an Indian take-away was the order of the day.
The feller taking the order did a little dance whn he saw Bladeforlife walk through the door, as he knew he was going to be quids in....
Comparison of meal prices:
Pikeys Dog + Missus = £7.00 (just under)
Bladeforlife + Missus = £22.00

Really enjoyed what turned out to be the last Allnighter at Sheridans.
A packer, with everyone up for a great night out.
Fantastic line up as usual, with the small room giving less experienced DJs a chance (including a certain Gypos Mutt).
It was a pleasure to play to such an appreciative crowd without massive dancefloor pressure.
Unfortunately no playlist as I forgot to jot them down.
Had a couple of people deck clocking the Betty Lavette version of 'Stormy'
(Shame it's so hard to find, could have sold mine five times over.)
Sheridans will be missed, as I don't think there is another club with that small, intimate feeling that is still big enough to accomodate a decent sized crowd.
Stafford Reunion.
Posted by , 10 June 2005
Well, Stafford Reunion was a bit of a let down to be honest.
Parking was atrocious due to a fun fair being plomked on what seemed the only decent sized carpark in the area.
Lugged the heavy record boxes the 200 yds up to the front door to be held up by over zealous doorstaff..... checking for drugs? No. Checking for weapons? No. Checking for bottles of lemonade? Yes. Well you could spray it in someones eye, and depending upon the 'lemon to liquid' ratio, it could sting them quite badly.
As a part time record dealer, I was pretty much pee'd off when I found out that the table I'd reserved was somewhere in 'Alsager' (felt like it after walking past the main room and up the stairs).
The room was the most depressing I've ever had the misfortune to be put in.... a bit of a sweaty coffin, full of record dealers with nobody looking at records.
Spent a couple of hours in there hoping things would get better, but alas they didn't so i packed up and took the records downstairs.
Slipped my box onto a small patch of free table in the foyer and made a few sales within 30 minutes.... this compounded the feeling of having wasted my time going upstairs.
Managed to catch Guy Hennigans spot in the main hall, which was excellent, but by the time this had passed the whole event had already been soured for me.
I've already made these comments to the promoters and to be fair they have responded accordingly...
Don't think i'll make the journey there again though.

What's Wrong With Promoters.....
Posted by , 17 April 2005 ·
Why do promoters of sporadic events pick nights that clash with established confirmed events?
Latest in a long line of these clashes involved the very irregular 'Winsford' clashing with the bi-monthly 'Lifeline'.
I'm not suggesting that promoters aren't allowed to go up against other venues, but it smacks of sheer stupidity to put a night on up against one of the most popular current all nighters...
At the end of the day it's not just the rival promoter who loses out, it's everyone.
As a promoter and 'punter' it annoys me that I can't visit these other venues as I can't be in two places at once... so yet again I miss out on a decent night out.
The ethic of 'more choice' isn't always a great thing, it divides the scene and makes for poorer attended nights all round.
This has been a regular thing amongst the local Soul Nights, but it has now started creeping into the Allnighter scene.
No matter how hard you argue that the scene is 'huge' and places like Prestatyn and Stoke Kings Hall are always rammed, the truth is that there is an hardcore week in, week out allnighter crowd of around 300 - 400 people, and everytime that events clash, this crowd is diluted....
Places like Prestatyn are always going to be busy, but the majority of the people there may only visit one or two Allnighters during the year (some won't even manage that), so it's no good using them as a barometer when starting to promote an Allnighter.
I suggest that the promoters of these nights that clash, get themselves out and about, and work out exactly which nights they shouldn't clash with before booking their dates.
If there isn't the option of alternative dates, then why not forget about promoting a clash, and schedule something in for later in the year?
Or would that be too easy, and remove the opportunity for self-ego boosting
Just a thought like......

Lifeline April 16th
Posted by , 17 April 2005
Made our way up the M1 to the best upfront Allnighter in the country at the moment...
Arrived at about 9.45 and there was already a decent turn out, with dealers set up and Vinyl hounds sniffing through the boxes.
Said our hellos, then set up the sales and struck camp for the night.
Another busy night ensued, with the record bar getting crammed full, but not much in the way of sales... Roger Banks reported low vinyl sales, suggesting a general slow down in the market, fortunately for Roger he'd just taken delivery of the excellent new batch of Kent CDs, which he had sold out of most titles of in two nights...
Not the busiest 'Lifeline' (probably due to the rumours about Sheridans flying around, and the clash with Winsford...see later comments)
Musically, for me this was probably one of the better 'Lifelines', from what you could hear in the bar. (There were some volume problems, and sound cutting out in there on occasion).
It was great to see Jamie and Rich from 'Soulsville' down there.... I was beginning to think that they went out less often than the Olympic Torch.
There aren't many Allnighters that I would travel the length of the country to attend, but this is one of them, so it's quite fortunate that I only live 40 minutes down the road.
A highly recommended night out, just what an Allnighter should be like.

Second time out for this venue, and a much improved one.
Arrived around the midnight point after some deft driving from vault-of-souler..... a bit of a white knuckle ride around those country lanes near Alsager.
Met the hirsute Mr Beggs at the door, who was looking rather chuffed with the turn-out.
Place was filling up nicely with a fair split between the rooms, with the Oldies room being chokka.
Continued up the 96 flights of stairs to the R&B room, having to stop at each landing to strike camp, have a cup of tea and a bit of bun, before venturing onwards and upwards.
Now because I'm quite a lazy sort, and I love R&B, I didn't venture downstairs very much, but when I did I enjoyed the sounds I heard in the "Conny Sewers" room, but the Oldies room wasn't really my bag (7 days is too long stands out as the standard of oldie I heard), however the dancefloor was full so fair play to the DJs....
Anyway a swift run down of the upstairs room.
Walked in to hear the back end of Horse's set... quality, uptempo R&B as usual...
Said my hellos, handed out a few Back Beat flyers, delivered a few records to their new owners and listened to Mace's spot.
1.30 came around and it was my turn behind the decks.
Tried to keep the tempo up, with a mixture of popular R&B and a smattering of lesser known tracks (Playlist to follow).
The dancefloor was pretty busy throughout, so not too bad a set.
Handed over to Kev Drage, who favours a slightly more midtempo style of track, but a great spot never the less.
Pete Coulson put in a sterling effort for his hour between 3.30 and 4.30.... mixing it up with some storming tracks.....
Last up was a double deck set from Roger and Horse, all great tunes ranging from Gritty uptempo R&B to slick midtempo Big City Soul.
Quality music in a good venue...
My only gripe is the lack of heating in the upstairs room, quite a few people came in the room spent ten to fifteen minutes in there, then went back downstairs for a warm up.
Had one last walk around the venue just prior to closing and counted well over 150 peeps still in....
Not bad for only the second night, and sure to increase in the future.

Ponds Forge 8th April 2005
Posted by , 09 April 2005
Another good Ponds this month...
Quite a few bemused Soul Sourcers in attendance - but were Bill, Ben and Weed there?
Musically, this place is getting better (although I have heard the complaint that there are less oldies being played, but that suits me just fine).
A good mixture of Oldies, Newies and inbetweenies..... plenty of 70s tracks if that's your bag, and a full dancefloor for the majority of the evening...
Even a smattering of R&B tracks didn't put the dancers off... cue my favorite phrase of the moment.... "When is an R&B record not an R&B record?.... when it's a Northern/Stafford record!" (Delete as applicable).
Always enjoy this venue as a seller - nice well lit room, that isn't too far away from the music, yet the volume is low enough so that you can chat/deal/joke around without having to shout....
Can't wait until next month, when Soul Sourcers Jamien and Rich from Soulsville, and John May are guests.
Promises to be a bit of a packer, with the majority of the SSCDT showing as part of their SSCDT weekend......
No doubt the Four Horse(wo)men of the Soulpocalypse will be appearing.
Ta Ta for now,
oh, by the way.....

Some Djs Are Full Of It !
Posted by shute, 16 December 2007 ·
Well just got back from Keele niter, not as buzy as last time I went, but hey ! its that time of the year...
Been getting a few numbers etc for djs to do spots at soul night.... one dj, who shall not be named and known for along time doesnt do soul nights as they are crap and said where do you go ! even though we travel in different circles different venues and rarely at the same venue (niter wise) ... so was the reply '' your not on the scene then'' ????????? so does that mean you have to do niters only to be on the soul scene ??? - news to me
the dj in question, as I know does weekenders, nighters and international spots.... but hey wahat do I know only been into this scene since 1973, through the Wigan, Stafford etc eras... felt a bit offended at this, but everyone to their own and if you dont ask you dont get.
Now to me, are some of these top djs so far up their own arse or am I missing something ??????
is the chip on the shoulder as large as a train sleeper or I just may have taken things the wrong way.
Has anyone else ever come across this ?

3Bs Soul Club @ Stafford Rangers FC
Situated just to the north of Stafford town centre within 5mins of Junction14 off the M6, the Rangers is a well appointed single storey building contaning 2 function rooms and has a large car park. Usually on the first Saturday of every month the largest of the two rooms is hosted to the 3Bs Soul Club.
Promoted by Kev (Shute) Johns and John Fisher, the event which was started in August 2004 has now become an integral part of the Staffs/West Midlands soul calander. The room has a wall to wall wooden dance floor with a bar at one end and a raised stage at the other.
Although it has never been a lock out (capacity of around 300) you are advised to be early as the night does get very busy. The 3Bs Soul Club is even right across the board with the emphisis on quality.
Guest DJ's that have appeared to date include :- Soul Sam, Ginger Taylor, Sean Chapman, Rob Kay, Ted Massey, Nige Brown, Dave Thorly, Carl & Maria Willington, who are regular and welcomed visitors to the club.

What I've Done Over The Past 2 Weeks
Posted by shute 10 April 2005 ·
Oh well, thought I'd better start my blog off......
OK !, Lets start off with last weekend Friday 1/4/05..... as most people know that I run a soul night in Stafford every 1st Friday of the month, this use to be every 2nd Friday of the month until this year when it had to be changed due to other comittments by the venue owners.
Anyway, last Friday I was booked to do the Big Lock in Middlewich, a booking I took last year prior to my date changes, and let me just say ''what a great little venue this is'', you can play sounds that you have never played out before and the crowd there will listen and even dance & the best thing, you do get comendated on the stuff you play, all good, keep up the great work Ste & Ann.
Right after doing my spot and slaying around for about half hr, I was back on the motorway heading towards Stafford to the Rangers Club and just arrived back and Mr Rimmer had about 15mins left on his spot, and what I heard and the feedback recieved, I can only praise Dave and say thank you.
What can I say about Stafford Rangers Soul Night, without being bias, always a good night, sounds, atmospher, function room, just brilliant, you should get yourself down here and see for yourself......
This weekend been nowhere as trying to get my new office ready for moving in...
Until next time soul peps......Have Your Fun

After more than 10 years on the scene, Mr Day delivers once again on the label home to Lee McDonald. Here, accompanied by a bunch of the finest musicians in town, he brings us his versions of two solid hits.  'Get Your Point Over' is a classic tune that has gained massive credit on all soul discerning dancefloors across the globe. With strong funky backing, lush keys and uplifting lyrics, this one will get you spinning and gliding for years.  On the flip, Mr Day shows his rawer side on a strong take on 'Spooky'. A nasty bass and rocking guitar set the vibe for the gritty voice, recalling some late 60’s british shouter. Club soul ? Modern soul ? Heavy soul? Whatever! Just damn good soul!

Nigel Shaw Charity Alldayer -A Lookback and Thanks by Sean Chapman Nov 24 2007

THE NIGEL SHAW CHARITY ALL DAYER - BURTON BELVERDERE CLUB BURTON-ON-TRENT SAT 24 NOV 07
Over 8 months ago in conversation with Dave"Soulful Kinda" Rimmer he mentioned about doing another All Dayer that the late Nigel Shaw had organised at Weston Super Mare's Great Atlantic Hotel in May 2006 which turned out to be a roaring success and Nigel was so proud of this event. This was to be the last event Nigel organised as shortly after, Nige passed away. I quickly got hold off Shawies soul mate Nigel Brown and we decided to hold a charity All Dayer with all proceeds to be donated to The Air Ambulance. While mentioning this to Nigel I was in the company of Paul BIG EARS Gould who kindly along with the Burton Connoisseurs Committee decided to hire the The Belvedere Club in Burton and all equipment along with their DJs and sound engineers totally free of charge. I also contacted all the other DJs who had spun a few records at the previous All Dayer and all kindly agreed to give their services FREE. I also checked with Linda Shaw and the family to let them know what we were doing and of course to get their approval.
Finally after many months the day arrived. Sat 24 Nov, the day started at 4 and went onto 1am. As in the previous All Dayer the DJs were given free range to play what they wanted too, and not to be dictated by the floor, again the sounds were fantastic, later on in the evening still keeping a eye on quality but also getting the floor moving and this was delivered with aplomb by every DJ in the Main Room, meanwhile upstairs in Room 2 for their sterling efforts, the local Burton DJ's spun a typical "76 Club" sound - well done.
It was also fitting to have one of the Air Ambulance members in attendance. The only expense we had was £100 for the flyers, everything else via all the Radio Stations, Soul Source and manifesto was donated. Kathy Lister also ran a raffle and to say the The Girl Done Good is an understatement, on the Day £812 was raised alone and I thought it was rather fitting that Linda Shaw won the Prestatyn weekender prize and sure Shawy had a hand in that one. Just over 300 paying customers came through the door and in total including the Raffle, a FANTASTIC Sum of £2,272 has been raised. To say I am speechless does not happen very often. I take this opportunity in thanking everybody who was involved with this tremendous event. It just goes to show what a great bunch of individuals we have on this soul scene when we get together, so once again THANK YOU!! Linda Shaw and family would also like thank you from the bottom of their hearts for keeping Nigel Shaw in your hearts and minds.
Finally a massive thanks to Paul and Yvonne Gould for all their time, effort and help. Paul has badgered, harassed and cajoled and I suspect been a right "pain in the arse" in getting the word out on the streets so I cannot thank him enough.
I cannot express my sincere gratitude enough to all those who have helped:

Rare And Unreleased Recordings From The Golden Reign Of The Queen Of Soul - Clips and Info

Rare And Unreleased Recordings From The Golden Reign Of The Queen Of Soul

When Jerry Wexler took the young Aretha Franklin under his wing at Atlantic Records in 1966, her evolution into the artist supreme we revere as “The Queen Of Soul” began. Mined from the tape archives for an era that gave forth seminal hits including “Respect,” “Chain Of Fools,” “Baby I Love You” and other immortal recordings, the new Wexler-produced 2CD compilation RARE & UNRELEASED RECORDINGS FROM THE GOLDEN REIGN OF THE QUEEN OF SOUL spans 1966-1973 and shines an intimate light on the magic that earned Aretha her Crown.

“We've discovered a treasure trove of vintage Aretha that's nothing short of thrilling. Aretha's outtakes are the sort of performances most artists would be proud to call first choices.”
 - legendary record producer and Atlantic Records principal Jerry Wexler, writing in the detailed liner notes for this collection

A revealing collection of rarities and unissued marvels from her peak Atlantic years, the set presents Sister Re honing her art in the studio and emerging a legend. Comprising almost 2-_ hours of music, it compiles outtakes from sessions for eight albums, breathtaking, stripped-down demos, B-sides, a duet with Ray Charles and more. Only four tracks were previously released in any form. The booklet features a wealth of rare and previously unseen photos.

Disc 1 highlights include the demos for “Dr. Feelgood” and “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You),” a breakout hit when it topped Billboard's Black Singles chart and went to #9 pop in '67. Choice outtakes include a version of “My Way” that Wexler calls “a masterpiece.” Rare B-sides include “Pledging My Love/The Clock” and “Lean On Me.”

Disc 2 opens with a trio of songs from the historic Young, Gifted And Black sessions including “I Need A Strong Man” and the unedited take of the Aretha-penned original “Rock Steady.” It also presents eight outtakes from the Quincy Jones-produced LP Hey Now Hey (The Other Side Of The Sky) including “Sweetest Smile And The Funkiest Style,” “Can You Love Again” and Leonard Cohen's “Suzanne,” plus a live duet with Ray Charles on “Ain't But The One” from the 1973 CBS-TV special Duke Ellington…We Love You Madly. The disc, and the set, closes with a spare and elegant demo for “Are You Leaving Me” featuring Aretha solo on piano.

Now a 17-time GRAMMY®winner, Aretha's inspired work at Atlantic with Wexler and other revered producers including Tom Dowd, Quincy Jones and Arif Mardin, as well as the Muscle Shoals rhythm section and other session greats took her talents to the next level. She in turn influenced the course of popular music in the 20th century and became one of its most universally celebrated and enduring icons.

Aretha Franklin is also the first woman ever to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On their web page chronicling her 1987 induction, they write, “She is a singer of great passion and control whose finest recordings define the term soul music in all its deep, expressive glory. As Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun observed, 'I don't think there's anybody I have known who possesses an instrument like hers and who has such a thorough background in gospel, the blues and the essential black-music idiom.…She is blessed with an extraordinary combination of remarkable urban sophistication and of the deep blues feeling that comes from the Delta. An evening to celebrate the life of Jim Demetriou Friday 16th November

An evening of soul music & dancing to celebrate the life of Jim Demetriou
Friday 16th November
The Loom Bar (formerly Needles), 5 Clipstone Street, London W1
7.00pm 2.00am / entry is £5.00 and 100% of the proceeds will go to The Lymphoma Association (lymphoma.org.uk)
DJs: Ady Croasdell / Tony Smith / Ady Lupton / Rob Holmes / Lenny Dopson / Buey / Ben Summers / Angelo Acanfora / Liam Fuller
In Jim's memory, all the money raised on Friday will go to the Lymphoma Association, so here's what it's all about...
Every hour of every day one person in the UK is diagnosed with lymphatic cancer. There are over 10,500 new cases of lymphoma in the UK each year, half as many again as the much better known leukaemia. It is the most common cancer in the under-30s and the 6th most common cancer overall. Despite this incidence, lymphoma is not a well known disease and many patients first hear of it on diagnosis, making them feel extremely isolated. The Lymphoma Association provides emotional support and information on a range of issues to anyone with lymphatic cancer and to their families, carers and friends.
It's a worthy cause and obviously the more money raised the better, but the most important thing is we have a good night. That's what Jim would really want.

Yate Re-Union Saturday 01 December - Info And History

Information, history and more on the upcoming Yate re-union

Yate The Re-Union Saturday 01 December Berkeley

It been a few years coming, but finally Dave Thorley has found a venue to put on the first full Yate re-union. To be held on Saturday 1st, Dec. Dave says the venue Berkeley Power Station, Social Club, looks scarily like the old Stars and Strips, Sterling Suite. He has got together a full line up of original dj's, who promise to play authentic sets. With a line of Dave himself, Dave Greet, Ady Pountain, Hippo, Richard Marsh and Tony Ellis the whole spectrum of tunes from the club will be played. From the early days under John Kojak's Inter-City banner, through the Southern Soul Club promotions right up until it closed some 5 years later under the South West Soul Club.

The venue is situated on the banks of the river Severn, justs from the original location. Feed back todate has been fantastic so expect a packer, with many old faces venturing out for the first time in years, some making the trip from as far away as Spain.

In addition to the mainroom, which holds about 300, there will also be a modern room. This will host the first set in the UK of Russ Vickers, since his return from the U.S. He will be ably supported by the cream of the west including Steve Lloyd, Malayka, also hoping that Meg Wilshire and Mike Ashley will being hitting the decks. Dave asks that everyone brings a soul club membership with them for sign in at the door.

Admission for this special event is just £5, contact Dave for more details davethorley@aol.com or visit the www.soulstuff.co.uk

A few words on the history of this famous event

The venue started in the mid-seventies and ran for more than five years. During this time thousands of people passed through it's doors and for many it was there first allnighter experience. Over these five years it had three different promotors, the late John 'Kojac' Harvey, Dinks and Nick McAvoy and even moved venue with in the town from the Stars and Strips club to the Swimming Baths and back again. The event maintained a loyal following over its time, when many others came and went and now stands as one of the great 70's northern events. Yate also acted as a spring board for many DJ's; being the first regular allnighter bookings for the likes of Ian Clark, Dave Thorley, Ady Pountain and atttracting the big names of the day such as Pep, Soul Sam, Dave Withers and Gary Rushbrook. Those that went liked it because it always played a mix of 60's indemanders, the latest 70's 'Mecca' tracks, along side it's own new discoveries. To this day many still vividly remember certain tracks as 'A Yate Tune'.

AS of the th September there will be changes to the venue's times and format. We would like to welcome Gaz Archer of Driving Beat Soul club as resident Dj and co promoter of the night.
Since running this venue from March 07 it has had it's high and low moments but under no circumstances is this venue closing so, if you have heard rumors this venue is to close,we would just like to say that the club committee has booked us for the whole of 2008 for this established and regular event.
WE ARE making changes to the opening times and dj line up. We will continue with the same across the board music policy. The bar will now be open from 7.30 until 12.30am The Club will close at 1am.
Both myself and Gary have commited ourselves for the rest of this year and the whole of next year to bring you top quality Dj line up's and throughout next year special events to include our 2nd anniversary in April, so watch out for those coming up. I would like to thank all those Dj's that have played for us so far...many of whom will be appearing again.

Well a big thanks to all those who came and supported us last night was a good 'un. Gary would'nt remember tho' he was brought in and packed off into a corner by Kev and Bryn to rest for his long drive home bottom lip supported by his glass of lemonade he watched the proceedings with his usual jolly smile Bryn was again caught boogie'ing but the pillar was covered to prevent him pole dancing again and Carl freed up for the night was seen to have a dance or three as the Dj"s....Debbie played some cracking tunes (proving the ladies have it too) Paul and Cressy had everyone up on the floor (superglue at the bar proved too strong for some to break free tho, the committee wer'nt taking chances that the bar would be down lol) Dave with stood the heckling from Mary and Val something about the size of his car ! and played on well Ray dominated his chosen corner and defended it against all comers all night Big thanks to Joyce and John (Barnsley ) for their support - Can we have the floor polish back please Joyce !!
Hope to see you all there on April 6th at the 1st anniversary bash

Posted by night nurse, 15 January 2007 ·
hello all

6TS at Jack's this Sat is CANCELLED

I've decided to cancel all future events at Jack's due to an unexpected increase in the rent and a decrease in the hours at the last one. I should have notified everyone well before now but Kent's 25th celebrations just took over eveything. My apologies for the very late notice.

Now we are back at the 100 Club it seems people much prefer going to those dances rather than the ones at Jack's. I'd like to thank Johnny Gamlin for coming to our rescue earlier in the year with the venue, when we really needed it. The first night was brilliant about 400 people enjoying a great atmosphere in the impressive club. However there were only just over 100 at the second and perhaps 150 at the third so it's obvious that 6TS members hadn't enjoyed it as much as I thought they had, or perhaps they were just happy to be back in the 100 Club. Either way Jack's was a short but memorable experience.

The next 6TS will be at the 100 Club on December 1st, 9pm-6am. The Xmas party is on Dec 20th 9pm-2am. Membership is optional for all 6TS events now.

  Thanks

Saturday Oct 27th The Lifeline Allnighter - Retford Notts

This Saturday, October 27th see’s the latest instalment of Lifelines Rare Soul All-nighters. It will be the last one until the weekender in February so make sure you don’t miss it!!! Alongside the residents of Butch, Andy Dyson, Mick H, Cliff Steele and Chalky will be two of Scotland’s finest Colin Law and Jock O’Connor. Both have been leading lights on the rare soul scene, both as DJ's and collectors in Scotland for many years and it will be a pleasure to see them grace the decks at Lifeline.

As usual the music policy remains the same as has done for the last three and a half years.....the rare, the obscure, the forgotten, thinking man’s (and woman’s) oldies, 60's & 70's soul music whatever the price.....maybe the odd 80's and odd funky thing thrown in too...basically whatever the DJ wants to play.

The venue, a three star hotel dates back to the 16th Century and if you fancy a meal beforehand it is one of the best eating places in the area.

If you fancy stopping in one of the excellent rooms Andy has negotiated some rooms for the almost give away price of £20. Just give the hotel a call on +44 (0) 1777 705121 quoting Andy Dyson and Lifeline.

If you want more information, playlists, sounds and pictures visit the Lifeline Web site, http://lifelinesoulclub.com/index.html.

All the DJs were in my opinion outstanding,my fav has to be Tony Parker(there has to be one, thats not putting down the others)i never realised the quality of the man, always took him for granted and not to aware of the tunes played untill last night 5****well done sir..
A big thanks to Chalky for inviting me up & directions (beers are on me mate, next week in 100 club)..Steve Green for being Steve, you talk a lot of sense regarding records etc..Dave Rivers for keeping Mandy normal as she can be.Kirsty for the lolipops and laughter, great to see you again, still mad as a hatter..

Kent 25 Years Event - A Lookback by Ady C

Kent 25 Years Celebration  - A Lookback by Ady C
Thanks for all the great comments and sentiments from Soul Sourcers and I agree it was a truly great night.
It's been just about the toughest period of my life work-wise and if I looked a bit distant on Friday night, it was because I was still working up to 1.45, dealing with an event like that was new territory for me.
I think we had about 1500 people through the doors including guests and though it was a big success all round it was totally Kent's backing that made it possible. All the directors and staff supported me and the project completely, through some bleak moments as well as good. My immediate boss Roger Armstrong was responsible for the initial idea, gave me lots of good advice and stuck his neck out and put his company's finances on the line. One of the most gratifying moments for me was seeing him grinning from ear to ear over the whole thing. In fact there was a lot of that going on, from my 16 year old son and his mate who ended up on stage with Maxine (not nepotism, everyone else nearby bottled it!) to 60 year old stalwarts of the soul scene who remembered the original 60s revues and compared this one more than favourably. Neil Scapelhorn Ace's press person put in a lot of hard productive work and Yvette Deroy who ran the Kent stall contributed immensely too.

The acts really excelled and pulled together, they didn't even ask where they were on the bill until rehearsals and were all happy with being vital parts of the show. Winfield Parker was a slight gamble in that I'd never met him or heard him sing but Tommy assured me he was good and how right he was. Professional, energetic, cool and talented about sums him up and the clothes he wore to rehearsal were as stylish as the suit he was sporting on stage. Mary has always been dear to mine and Kent fans' hearts since she sang track 1 on Kent 001 and every time I hear that opening drum roll and beautifully sung "You" I get goose bumps. She was the star act at the first Cleethorpes Weekender and sang at Ace's 25th and the Jazz cafe celebrations for us too. Every time she's on stage her church singing and love of her music gives us a memorable performance and her rendition of Randy's favourite I'm In Your Hands was just perfect. The Flirtations not only provided glamour with a capital Wow, but also showed they can sing their socks off, as well as shimmy their butts off. Their UK Deram tracks in particular sounded at least as good as most songs cut in the States at that time and were full of soul. They brought along Jimmy James, Carl Douglas and a whole UK soul entourage too. Linda Lewis turned up as well and got to talk with Mary about them both cutting Bitter Into Sweet as their first records.

Tommy Hunt looked resplendent and sang beautifully, particularly on his great ballads which is always the sign of a class singer. Lover was a treat for me, having originally unearthed it and his charm and enjoyment of the occasion won the crowd over effortlessly.
Maxine has been the patron saint of the 6TS Rhythm & Soul club since 1979 and her presence is always an honour and a treat for us. This time though she really surpassed herself and I believe it was her greatest performance, if not ever, then certainly since she came back into our lives in the 90s. Utterly prepared and professional, she combined that with her natural singing talent and a great stage presence. Every move was for a purpose and I really felt we were in the presence of a great star.
The acts all got on like they were the best of friends and enjoyed every minute of their stay. They were knocked out by the audiences support, knowledge and love for them. I eventually got to DJ for the last 15 minutes after original 6TS DJs Tony Rounce and Roger Stewart had kept the dancefloor buzzing to the end, my thanks to them and MC Eddie Pillar who was called upon at very short notice and did a great job for us.
Like the acts, I too was so pleased with the fantastic turn out and the sea of faces of soul friends and family that filled that huge, noble venue up. People had made a lot of sacrifices and effort to get to a do that could only go on until 2 am an expensive affair, but that made the previous months of work totally worth-while.
Even though it's going to be a long time before anyone tries something on that scale again, at least we know we can now at least consider it.

Kent records celebrates its 25th anniversary on Friday October 19th 7.30pm – 2 am at The Forum, Kentish Town, London. A spectacular 60s Soul Revue has been arranged with US soul singers Maxine Brown, Tommy Hunt, Mary Love, The Flirtations and Winfield Parker performing in front of a full backing band and celebrity MCs announcing them on stage. The live show will be followed by a three hour 6TS and Northern Soul disco with original 100 Club DJs Ian Clark, Tony Rounce and Ady Croasdell.

It's been 20 years since an authentic 60s Soul Revue hit London and brings back memories of the Stax/Volt and the Motown Revues of the 60s. It will be a major event for all the music fans who remember those heady days and for all the younger ones who will want that atmosphere recreated.

Kentish Town is an apt area to stage this celebration as the Kent label was formed in the legendary Rock On record shop (said to be Nick Hornsby’s inspiration for High Fidelity) and the offices were in Kentish Town Road for its early years.

Maxine Brown

Maxine has been singing soul since its very inception. The late music journalist and soul guru Dave Godin considered her self-penned hit ‘All In My Mind’ to be one of the very first soul records and a pinnacle of Deep Soul artistry.

Maxine’s most prolific and best loved work was recorded for New York’s Wand label and included the original and best version of Goffin and King’s soul anthem ‘Oh No Not My Baby’, a big hit for Manfred Mann. While at Wand, Maxine cut a string of sublime 60s soul dance tracks that have been adopted by the UK’s Northern Soul crowd. These include ‘One In A Million’, ‘Let Me Give You My Loving’, ‘One Step At A Time’ and ‘It’s Torture’.

She continued to record through the 60s and 70s for Sony’s Epic label and Commonwealth United records, but it was not until an appearance at the legendary Cleethorpes Northern Soul weekender in the 90s that she revived her career singing her hits and new material to sell-out crowds around Europe and the USA.

Tommy Hunt

Though Tommy has had a hit-studded singing career in the US, he is most famous in this country for his live appearances at Wigan Casino at the height of its popularity in the mid-70s. His live LP recorded there is a classic of the era and he has been a resident of the UK since those heady days. His best known hit here is ‘Loving On The Losing Side’, a Northern Soul recording in 1976 which became a disco smash all around the country.

Prior to that he had a massive US R&B hit with his ballad ‘Human’ and he recorded the first version of Bacharach and David’s seminal ‘I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself’, a big hit here for Dusty. Tommy is a legend for his fabulous live shows at New York’s Apollo theatre and he is going to treat his UK followers to just such an event at the Forum on the 19th.

Mary Love

Mary was the first voice to be heard on the Kent label when her Northern Soul classic ‘You Turned My Bitter Into Sweet’ opened the first side of the “For Dancers Only” LP in 1982. She had a string of classic 60s soul recordings for LA’s Modern label and her ‘Lay This Burden Down’, apart from being a perennial Northern dancefloor filler, has been re-mixed by several inspired soulful house DJs. She continued to record into the 80s and beyond but mainly gospel tracks since the late 70s. One of these, ‘Come Out Of The Sandbox’, was adopted by the Modern Soul crowd at the Southport weekenders and is a soul anthem to their educated ears.

Mary has appeared at the Cleethorpes Northern Soul weekender and the Jazz Café before and brings the house down with her magnificent vocals every time.

The Flirtations

Like Tommy Hunt, the girls came to the UK in the early 70s due to public demand and loved the country so much they stayed for good.

Originally known as the Gypsies, they had a big R&B hit with ‘Jerk It’ for the Old Town label and a massive underground Northern Soul hit with ‘It’s A Woman’s World’ for the same label. On moving to the UK they cut a great version of Marvin Gaye’s ‘Little Darling’ for Polydor before recording a string of classic soul singles for the Deram label. Best known among those are ‘Someone Out There’, ‘Need Your Loving’, and ‘Nothing But A Heartache’, which has a massive London club following and was made more famous by featuring in one of the recent KFC adverts.

They regularly perform to their legions of fans throughout Europe and have just emerged from the recording studios with a brand new Ian Levine-produced Northern Soul dance track. They are thrilled to be appearing on this prestigious 60s soul revue and will be singing up a storm for their home town crowd who may not even realise they are their fellow citizens.

Winfield Parker

This will be the first visit to the UK for Baltimore, Maryland Deep Soul singer Winfield Parker. He has been singing for local labels in his home city since the early 60s but gained a much bigger following when he started to record out of nearby Philadelphia in the late 60s and 70s. His ballad ‘I’m Wondering’ for Wand Records is considered a Deep Soul classic and his 1971 cover of Edwin Starr’s ‘Stop Her On Sight’ was a 1971 national R&B hit for him. Further records, including the excellent ‘I’m On My Way’ for New York based Spring Records, were critically acclaimed and ‘I Wanna Be With You’ for his own P&L label in 1978 is regarded as a modern soul anthem, so his first appearance in the UK will be a big deal for a lot of soul fans.

Bite Harder - De Wolfe Music to Launch A Series of Commercial Releases from its Library

De Wolfe Music to Launch Series of Commercial Releases

London – 07th October 2007: The world’s largest independent production music library, de Wolfe Music, is set to release its first commercial album. De Wolfe will re-issue some of the finest tracks from the depths of its back-catalogue as a series of collectable compilations. The albums will each be themed and will group sought-after film cues and production music into similar respective genres and styles.

The series will begin with the release of Bite Harder on the 29th October 2007, cat. number DWCR001. The album collects some rare slices of the finest ‘70s production music breakbeats, loungecore, funk and psychedelic rock, featuring the finest musicians of the era: Herbie Flowers, Barry Morgan, Johnny Hawksworth, The Electric Banana and Ronnie Verrell all make an appearance.

Many of the tracks on Bite Harder have been sampled by major artists such as Beyonce (Nick Ingman’s Down Home), High And Mighty (Simon Haseley’s Hammerhead) and Kool G Rap (Roger Jackson’s Flashpoint). The album is essentially a sequel to the highly sought after Bite Hard album, which consisted of licensed de Wolfe tracks and was released by B.B.E. Records in 1998. It will also receive a highly limited release on vinyl.

------------------------------

Background

The catalogues of film music libraries have long proven a treasure trove of unearthed breaks and rare gems for collectors and compilers such as Jonny Trunk, the B-Music collective (Andy Votel, Cherrystones) and David Holmes, who have all unearthed forgotten masterpieces from the soundtrack catalogues of long-established production music companies.

De Wolfe’s music library is the longest running and most important such film music resource in the world, having soundtracked the likes of Dr.Who, George A Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead (and latterly its more recent homage Shaun Of The Dead), countless cult grindhouse films and a whole plethora of first generation soft core adult movies including Emmanuelle. Nowadays de Wolfe tracks can be heard on TV shows Fonejacker, Fifth Gear and Wife Swap as well as commercials for brands like Chrysler, Lucozade and Adidas.

In 2007, artists are queuing up to sample the wealth of music that lies within the de Wolfe catalogue. Lilly Allen, The Gorillaz, Kool G Rap and The Deadly Avenger have all found the library’s beats irresistible food for their samplers. We hope that you do too. It’s been nearly ten years since the release of the now legendary and long since deleted ‘Bite Hard’ album – one of the first important library comps to hit the streets, and one that was pillaged by the likes of Jay-Z (Simon Park’s ‘Hogan’s Thing’), High & Mighty (Mcdonald/Rae’s ‘Nightmoves’), and Ja Rule (‘Hogan’s Thing’ again!). The entire LP even ended up on a documentary about cult 70s racing driver James Hunt! Not much has changed since 1998, apart from the fact that there are now hundreds of ‘Breaks & Beats’ comps available (most of them bootlegs) on the market and producers/djs are still desperate to get their ‘dusty’ fingers on as many samples as possible on their never ending quest for the perfect beat.

In fact, this cd would probably never have existed if it wasn’t for the obsessive crate diggers and library music lunatics that cajoled us here at Music de Wolfe headquarters to once again trawl through the bulging racks of LPs to seek out another batch of bullets for your sampler/turntables, and this time we decided to include a more leftfield selection – Heavy psych-rock, folk-soul, Afro-rock and electronic prog, as well as the more traditional hard orchestral funk are all elements featured on this album which we hope will give you another glimpse into our rich and diverse back catalogue. We promise you won’t have to wait another ten years before volume 3 is released!

De Wolfe Music is without a doubt the most important independent production music label which was founded in 1909 by Dutch born Mayer de Wolfe, who provided scores for films such as American moving picture pioneer DW Griffith’s The Dishonoured Medal (1914), Kenean Buel’s She (1917), and Roy Boulting’s 1947 political drama Fame is the Spur (the first soundtrack written by R.A.F. bomber and original ‘Dambuster’ John Wooldridge). Their recordings, which soon enjoyed far reaching international distribution were originally recorded on 35mm open-track film, then later pressed on 78rpm discs, followed by 10” (c.1960), and finally 12” 33rpm pressings for their vast catalogue. De Wolfe LPs also contain some of the most experimental and intriguing cover designs, which were initially produced by Ralph Webster, then in the 1970s by award winning Canadian artist Nick Bantock.

The de Wolfe library included themes and backgrounds covering every conceivable music style, and with fast growing popularity in the industry, the company soon expanded their catalogue, first in the mid 1930s when they acquired the Hudson library which leaned more towards avant garde sounds, as well as Sylvester (originally song sheet publishers) whose LPs were occasionally sub-licensed from French company Music Pour L’Image and contained a fine Jazz repertoire, not forgetting the Timings label (part of Paris based In Editions) whose musicians of note included Stephan Grappelli and Pierre Arvay, and ending with the Rouge imprint in 1973. Instantly Recognisable cues such as ‘The Gallery’ from cult 60s art programme Vision On, Dr. Who mood music, Sweeney dramatics, Monty Pythons Flying Circus (& The Holy Grail/Time Bandits/Meaning of Life/Jabberwocky), Emmanuelle, George Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead and Van Der Valk are all part of the de Wolfe cannon of work.

More obscure scores are lurking in thousands of kung fu movies (most of the Shaw Brothers 70s/early 80s catalogue/Joseph Lai’s cut n’ paste IFD masterpieces and Bruce Lee alike epics of trash such as Goodbye Bruce Lee – His Last Game of Death!), Tony Tenser’s Tigon Horror films (Witchfinder General/Haunted House of Horror/Curse of the Crimson Altar/Blood Beast Terror), and some of the finest British sex comedies - Zeta One, Eskimo Nell, Adventures of a Taxi Driver, the early Electric Blue videos and a plethora of Mary Millington soft-core classics

Some of the most distinguished and reputable musicians/composers are to be found playing amongst the grooves of De Wolfe albums, most notably Alan Hawkshaw, Alan Parker, Nick Ingman, Jimmy Page, Basil Kirchin, Hampton Hawes, Johnny Hawksworth, Stanley Myers, Stephan Grappelli, Karl Jenkins (Soft Machine/Adiemus), Reg Tilsley, Stanley Black, Roger Webb, Barbara Moore, John Altman, Frederic Talgorn and Alex Heffess to name just a few.

In the coming year expect to see more exclusive re-issues and compilations on this new label. Secret music that will be available to the general public for the first time ever. A retrospective of Shaw Brothers soundtracks, The lost BBC cues from Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Folk-Horror flick Witchfinder General and more.

P.S. This is an Official Compilation of de Wolfe tracks – Please think before spending your hard earned money on illegal bootleg albums that profit from the music of others. We all know who they are!!
 DETAILED TRACK LISTING

The Electric Banana – Street Girl Instrumental (Up-tempo Pop Blues)

As a supplemental income source in the late 1960s and even into the 1970s, Kentonian R&B punks The Pretty Things recorded anonymously for de Wolfe. Consequently, their music can be heard in some unlikely places, including some soft porn titles and horror flicks like Michael Armstrong's The Haunted House of Horror and Norman Wisdom’s cult favorite What’s Good For the Goose. These discs were credited to the fictitious group Electric Banana, and were never intended for official release. The group released five library albums during an eleven year period and ‘Street Girl’(which originally was recorded with vocals from Wally Waller), is taken from the More Electric Banana LP dating from early 68 when the Pretties had transformed into full psychedelic mode and is one of the finest examples of their heavy brand of hard funky freakbeat.

Ludovic Decosne & Pierre Daubresse – Gloaming (Funky Rock Style With Flutes)

Little is known about either composer of this unbelievably hypnotic and drum-heavy instrumental lifted from the 1972 LP ‘Little Bossa’ apart from the fact that I believe Mr. Decosne is an alias for French Illustrateur and music supervisor Pierre Poinsot and Mr. Daubresse currently writes for ‘Jazz Classique’ magazine. Regardless of that, it’s unquestionably a jam!

The Lemon Dips – Who’s Gonna Buy Instrumental (Sexy Rhythmic Pop)

Composed by Peter Reno and Johnny Hawksworth, this is the title cut from an album of the same name released in 1969 featuring six vocal tracks (with their corresponding instrumental versions on the flipside) of Mod infused British psych. Think The Creation vs. The Animals. As for the musicians themselves, names remain a mystery, and the band was most probably a ‘pick-up group’ – Regular session musicians in bands looking for extra work. Probably the most famous de Wolfe rock session player of the 1960s was ex-Yardbird and Led Zeppelin guitar guru Jimmy Page, who played alongside maverick progressive jazz orchestrator Basil Kirchin on the much sought after 10” release ‘The Wild One’.

Nick Ingman – Down Home (Mid-Tempo Unusual Sounds, Dramatic)

During the 1970s, this was one of the few projects that cult conductor/arranger Ingman worked on for de Wolfe project and it is definitely one of his most memorable. From the killer 1973 ‘Big Beat’ LP, which also includes ‘Trip Wire’ that we included on the original ‘Bite Hard’, comes ‘Down Home’, a dirty low-slung moog heavy funk bomb that is pure hip hop. As on his rare as hen’s teeth Polydor album ‘The Gentle Rain’ under the alias of ‘Moody’ from the same year, Nick Ingman was most likely on synthesizer and clarinet duties while Alan Hawkshaw (aka ‘The Hawk’) played piano. When listening to cutting edge music such as this it’s no wonder that in the last few years artists such as Radiohead and Morcheeba have sought the studio services of this music master.

Barry Stoller – Funky Spider (Earthy Novelty)

Performed by the pick-up group Meatball (a vehicle for ‘Match of the Day’ Composer Barry Stoller) from the 1971 LP ‘Atomic Butterfly’, the track ‘Funky Spider’ with it’s tough break beat intro is a brassy rock belter that wouldn’t sound out of place as the background score to a groovy club scene from an early 70s British teen movie. Perhaps it was!

Alan Parker – Crater (Pounding, Dramatic)

Ex-Blue Mink/Congregation guitarist Parker was one of the hardest working men of the library circuit, providing considerable material for rival labels ‘Kpm’ and ‘Themes International’. He only recorded a handful of 1970s discs for de Wolfe, the most notable being ‘Hot Ice’ (the 1974 LP that features the classic title track we included on ‘Bite Hard’ and sees the composer lay down his electric guitar in favour of an acoustic model). On this occasion we have chosen the other standout cut ‘Crater’ which is subtle folk-funk with beautiful flute solos and features the classic rhythm section of bassist Herbie Flowers and drummer Barry Morgan.

Peter Reno – Silver Thrust (Fast, Purposeful, Persistent)

Peter Reno (who also worked with the Electric Banana) was actually the alias of writer/composer Cliff Twemlow. ‘Silver Thrust’ taken from the 1972 ‘Great Day’ LP is a lightening-speed flute, Hammond and wah-wah workout with driving afro-style percussion that sounds almost identical to Johnny Harris’s ‘Stepping Stones’ from the 1970 ‘Fragment of Fear’ soundtrack. Not a bad thing at all.

Simon Haseley – Precinct (Funky, Dramatic, Driving T.V. Cop Style)

This is none other than regular De Wolfe composer Simon Park, famous frontman for the catchy ‘Van Der Valk’ theme, and this time the gritty crime track ‘Precinct’, from the heavyweight 1972 ‘Hogan, The Hawk, and Dirty John Crown’ LP which was featured as the opening tune to the Thames Television murder-mystery quiz series ‘Whodunit’ hosted by Jon Pertwee. Very Sweeney-esque in mood with a great growling flute solo and killer strings.

Keith Papworth – Hair Raiser (Forceful Deliberate Beat Intro Into Faster Racy Theme)

Here’s one for the B-Boys. After hearing that ‘Hard Hitter’ (the devastating title track from the 1975 self titled LP that we opened ‘Bite Hard’ with) had achieved cult status with certain crews of breakers around the globe who were using the track in their battles, we felt obliged to include this percussive nugget in our long awaited sequel. Regular DW Writer/Pianist Keith Papworth delivers a mean and dirty track that strips the music down to a sleazy drum and bass jam which erupts half-way into breakneck speed punk-funk. The man responsible for the beats was probably the great Ronnie Verrell, who provided the sound for the Muppets’s legendary drummer Animal!

Reg Tilsley –Warlock (Furtive, Building To Pounding Aggressive Theme)

As sampled by rapper Cam’Ron on ‘The Roc’ it only goes to show the importance of the de Wolfe catalogue as being prime raw material for hip hop producers. Penned by one of the great composer/arranger’s Reg Tilsley, on vol. 10 of his ‘Tilsley Orchestral’ series, ‘Warlock’ starts life as an eerie head nodding rhythm track complete with ghostly strings before evolving into a gorgeous orchestral groove with tight brass and flute work.

Johnny Hawksworth – Sandy Beach (Pleasant, Romantic)

Exotic steel-band funk anyone? This little corker from the late 60s is a great musical hybrid and just the sort of oddity that ended up on a library only release. From the obscure ‘Caribbean Sounds’ LP and written by Johnny Hawksworth (The man behind the themes to such unforgettable sitcoms such as ‘George & Mildred’ and ‘Man About The House’), the track ‘Sandy Beach’ with it’s tough steel drum break, sounds more like Dr. Dre than de Wolfe. Whoever described this as ‘Pleasant, Romantic’ needs a new set of ears!

Jack Trombey – Underlay No. 3 (Beaty, Neutral)

Short, but very sweet, ‘Underlay No. 3’ is a hip stripped down jazz-pop shuffler from 1971 and was sampled by British R&B singer Rhianna on her 2003 cut ‘Word Love’. Loaded with breaks, catchy piano and harp riffs, the LP this track originates from includes at least three secret Monroeville Mall musak cues from George A. Romero’s ‘Dawn of the Dead’.

Simon Haseley – Hammerhead (Driving, Heavy, Mid-Tempo, Double-Tempo Ending)

Recently used as the theme to the BBC’s coverage of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, and another bullet from the 1972 ‘Great Day’ album, ‘Hammerhead’ is probably most famous for being the sample in Ric-A-Che’s 2004 album cut ‘Thang Thangs’ AND High & Mighty’s ‘Dirty Decibels’ (Homefield Advantage LP 1999). Simon Park pulls out all the stops on the original production and the result is an expansive majestic treat with downtempo beats and big swirling strings making it the perfect hip hop tool.

Simon Park – Motives 1 (Dramatic Intro Into Heavy Beaty Busy Piece)

Mr. Park once again, this time sounding uncannily like Italian soundtrack giants ‘Goblin’ on this 1976 synth heavy prog jam. Blink and you would literally believe this was messrs Simonetti and Co. laying down the hard electronic fusion. Taken from the ‘Sun High’ LP, ‘Motives 1’ was yet another track utilized by Romero in one of the numerous versions of DOTD that exist.

Roger Jackson – Flashpoint (Heavy Bass Riff With Electronic Effects)

80s library music has never been particularly in vogue but the more risqué producers always had an open mind, and the year a track was recorded became irrelevant as long as the samples were fresh and untapped. Original Juice Crew rapper ‘Kool G Rap’s ‘Legendary Street Team’ (Rawkus 2001) which also showcases the rhyming skills of fellow New Yorker M.O.P., is a perfect example of innovative production. The track ‘Flashpoint’ from the 1983 LP of the same name just emanates hip hop sensibilities with it’s rugged down-tempo rhythm, futuristic electro whip cracks and repetitive keyboard riffs – The original is currently achieving high prices on Ebay, as more producers realise that there is a wealth of dope samples to be pillaged from a previously ignored era.

Pierre Arvay – Skyway (Neutral, Mid-Tempo, Beaty)

French ‘Music Concrete’ composer extraordinaire Pierre Arvay released a string of LPs on de Wolfe and sister label Hudson during the 60s and 70s, most notably his long running ‘Illustrations’ series that included cues used by everyone from the Shaw Brothers to the BBC. ‘Skyway’ is one of his later pieces that was issued on the elusive French ‘Timings’ label in 1976, and is great spacey synthesizer Euro-funk that emits a mysterious soft-focus ambiance in it’s wake.

17. Peter Reno/Vecchio – Renegade (Medium Slow, Semi-Dramatic)

In the early 1970s there was a brief trend for Afro-Rock music, no doubt fueled by the international success of artists like Osibisa and Manu Dibango, whose taut voodoo rhythms charmed a generation of hipsters with a penchant for the occult. Library pioneers de Wolfe decided early on to dabble with the devil, and in 1971 released the monumental LP simply titled ‘Afro Rock’, performed by fictitious group Vecchio - none other than our good friend Peter Reno and other regular session pals. The session is in a similar vein to the other famous British Afro Funkers ‘Cymande’ and contains a slew of pounding jungle beats, the standout being ‘Renegade’, a five minute escapade into tropical jazz featuring explosive saxophone and organ workouts while the drummer keeps the groove slow and low.

Simon Park – Ooze (Slow, Sensuous, Mysterious, Heavy)

Our final selection from Simon Park and a monster of a tune, ‘Ooze’, taken from the 1976 ‘Stretch’ LP is pure underwater funk – Dense wah-wah clavinets and synth bass tones wash over the listener, while the steady beat of the kick-drum bumps and grinds along in a slow-motion stupor.

John Saunders – Myriad (Eerie, Spacey Into Hard Mid-Tempo)

A serious new discovery from the man behind the awesome ‘Manta ray’ which we included on the original ‘Bite Hard’. The track ‘Myriad’ that was issued on the 1976 ‘Dream Kingdom’ album, sounds like a more cinematic version of Kraut-Rock, as it slowly bleeds into your brain with synthetic stealth until finally succumbing to the filthy electric guitar and drums, sounding very much like the greasy theme to the British zombie-biker flick ‘Psychomania’.

Compiled by Joel Martin & Warren de Wolfe

thanks to Cliff Twemlow's son for pointing out that Peter Reno real name was Cliff Twemlow not the one originally stated

Winners Of Kent 25 Anniversary Tickets !

The competion closed last night at the stroke of midnight and after a busy day at the sharp end of a red pen we have got two winners of the grand prize of two tickets for the forthcoming Kent 25 Year Bash
Thanks to all who had a go, thanks to Kent records for the prize, and hope the winners have a cracking time
Ady C be getting in touch with the winners via email .
Just in case you may have  forgotten,  the 3 q's are below, followed by Ady C's words
Thanks
Mike

Q1 Name any two of the people photoed on the front cover of "For Dancers Only" Kent 001

Q2 Name five artists who have had Kent solo CDs or LPs

Q3 Name three of the US labels Kent/Ace now own.

Thanks to all the entrants to the rather tough Kent competition, out of 19 million entrants only two got all the answers right, so rather than pick the winner of the pair of tickets out of a hat, we're gonna give them one each.

The winners are Alan Mitchell and Jean Paul Seculaire.

The simplest answers for the photo were Randy Cozens and Ian Clark, though lots of people got Randy's brother Gil's taxi driver! That is deep knowledge. My fair face wasn't featured; something to do with broken lenses.

You all got the individual artists-easy peasy, but the third question was the deal breaker.
Sadly we don't own Stax, Westbound, Twilight or Okeh. Those deals are all licensed in. We do own Kent, Modern, Money, Goldwax, Mirwood, Arock, Sylvia, Flip, Fraternity, Spring, Event, Dore, Era, Combo, GWP, Topper and several more I can't think of. One astute competitor with a long memory and murky past remembered Chiswick, the punkish label that started it all.

Thanks very much and congrats to the winners.

Ady

Larry Banks Soul Family Album - Various Artists Kent CD Release

Due out very soon now.
Larry Banks' Soul Family Album -Various Artists Kent

In 1964 Dave Godin was captivated by Bessie Banks´original recording of 'Go Now' and was incensed by the Moody Blues´usurping of the song and what he considered an unduly hasty campaign by the British record company to pass their version off as the original and best. To make amends on behalf of the small but eager coterie of UK soul fans, he took a special interest in Bessie and her husband Larry, the composer of the song. Further delvings into the pair's releases lead to more revelatory record finds and soon Dave was to champion Larry´s releases on Select, Kapp and Spring and his composing and production work with artists such as the Exciters, Kenny Carter and the Geminis. Dave built up a strong friendship with the family and a bank of information on their work. His discovery of Jaibi´s (Larry´s second wife) 'Ýou Got Me' on Kapp Records was a personal Deep Soul revelation and he awarded the recording the prestigious last track placing on his first Deep Soul Treasures CD. The family were well represented throughout all the volumes of Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures but their work wasn't restricted to deep soul and he planned a CD project to showcase their other talents. Sadly he became terminally ill but before he died he asked Ace/Kent consultant Ady Croasdell to complete the project. Fortunately Ace has bought many Banks family recordings from GWP Productions (for whom Larry worked in the late 60s). Some prime previously unheard soul songs have emerged from this source and feature here. Other vital and important tracks have been licensed-in from RCA and other smaller labels and Ady has built on Dave's research with extensive interviews. Apart from deep soul classics there are examples of Larry Banks' northern soul genius in tracks such as 'What's One More Lie' by Milton Bennett (co-composer of 'Go Now'), the Geminis' storming 'He Moves Me', the Devonnes' 'Doing The Gittin' Up', and unknown group the Shaladons' classy take on 'We Can Do It'. Of the deep soul tracks the highlights include two previously unissued Kenny Carter beat ballads and his excellent rendition of 'Lights Out' plus Jaibi's original intense demo of 'You Got Me'. This CD is part of the occasional Artistry In Soul series.

Bidds Rare Soul Allnighter Stoke Oct 6th 2007

Not too long to go before our 7th Allnighter at BIDDS in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent.
The last one in April was an absolute blinder, so hoping for more of the same on October 6th.
This time we welcome 3 Guest DJs making their debut performance behind the infamous suspended decks...
Carl Fortnum & Steve Green have IMMENSE collections, and joined by Killa, they will no doubt serve up some TOP quality tunes.
Residents Roger Banks and Des Parker need no introduction....they are the anchormen of Bidds (that said anchor  ) and constantly strive to mix new discoveries with established favourites.
A couple of worthy additions to the resident line-up include Johnny Beggs and Ted Couldstone.
Johnny Beggs was the first DJ to spin Rufus Lumleys' Minneaplis Minesota', a raucous track that is only just getting its deserved recognition on the scene...he blew Bidds apart with a right good mix of genres at the April nighter.. expect to hear some latin and boogaloo chucked into his set for good measure.
Ted is usually more well known for his highly respected sets on the R&B circuit....but he proved a man of many talents, when his 6.00 a.m. spot of uptempo dancers in April sent the dancefloor into a proper frenzy...he proved a very hard act to follow!
Then there's little old me......well as Shawn Elliot once said...'theres always a Joker, in the pack.....'
The venue is ideal, the music is varied but equally wonderfull, the record bar is very, very busy, and with Lindas smiling face to greet you and relieve of of just 10 of your hard earned pounds, you know you gotta agree...this is one nighter you really shouldn't miss.....
Anyhows...enough of my rambling and tedious hype...full details below.
Go on...you know it makes sense.....

Visting Detroit by Rob Moss Part 4

Visiting America can be a truly uplifting and pleasurable experience. It is the land of milk and honey, where the streets are paved with gold and everyone gets a fair chance to prosper and succeed. Migrants have been arriving for centuries, from all corners of the globe. Buy into the American dream and you too, can take your place on the gravy train to a modern day Utopia - a consumer heaven - a veritable Shangri La of goods, Gods and guns (for your own protection of course).
Trans continental virgin visitors are usually impressed by the size and splendour of the cities, monuments and entertainment citadels at their disposal, and the general efficiency, vibrancy and friendliness of the people. Everything in excess… easy access …success, success, success. But, it's not as perfect as it initially appears. Closer scrutiny, and a scratch beneath the veneerial surface, finds a shallowness of spirit and a poverty of purpose among the kinfolk that belies the over confidence most Americans exude. Conversation tends to be on a relatively banal and limited level, mainly because most Americans are frighteningly unaware of almost anything that goes on outside of their borders…and that includes Canada. Far too many Americans tend to be globally oblivious, insular and parochial. No wonder their armed forces have such trouble policing the rest of the world. A local female singer, well known to rare soul followers, ventured deep into the wisdom wasteland by enquiring why performers couldn't take the train to Britain, and seemed genuinely shocked when news of the Atlantic Ocean reached her...

note from the soul source team - sorry but all Robs non-current articles are now clipped due to a future book release - watch out for news of that!

Sad News: Soulcast

Funeral arrangement details have been posted in the forum thread and are below. Due to downtime of news section have reposted the original post by Russell below

It is with deep regret that I have to inform Soul Source members of the passing of Soulcast's Jim Demetriou. Jim, who ran and broadcast his online soul shows for a number of years, passed away today, Wednesday 19th September 2007, around 6:30pm.

Jim had been battling against cancer for so many years. At the beginning of this year, with his condition worsening, and with hopes pinned on the advances in medical science, he underwent a stem cell transplant. This, it was hoped, would send his cancer into remission.
It was a risky and traumatic process, but one he could not avoid. However, the process was perhaps even more taxing than even Jim had expected and over the months he grew weaker. The last few weeks his condition deteriorated and he had to go back into hospital.
Beyond Soulcast, Jim was, with out a doubt, an exceptional man. He never had an axe to grind, didn't have a bad word to say about anyone and, even through his illness, always had an optimistic view of the world. Spiritually honest and with a great force of integrity, he believed that the world was intrinsically good and was there to be enjoyed. He was one of the life's few genuine nice guys.

Having been fortunate to have had him as a best friend for just over 20 years, I will miss him — I already do and I know that so many others will too.

Russell Gilbert

The forum thread can be read here
https://www.soul-source.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=56149
A tribute by Ben Summers and Russel Gilbert can be read on the 6ts site

Jim's funeral will take place at St Nicholas Church, Godolphin Road, Shepherds Bush, W12 8JW, on Tuesday 2nd October, starting at 12.30, followed by burial at Gunnersbury Cemetery, 143 Gunnersbury Avenue, Acton W3 8LE. All are welcome.
Anyone wishing to send flowers for Jim should have them delivered to:

They should be delivered on Monday 2nd October at the latest. Anyone who would like to make a donation to charity instead is encouraged to do so.

My Old Youth Leader

My old youth club leader
Has been diagosed with brain cancer
I went to visit her and shes still in good spirits altho we did cry together
We did also have a right laugh when she was telling me about things she has done since the op due to some side effects.
She has had an op to remove 70% of the tumour but 30% still remains and is inoperable
It did bring back the vast majority of her speech which she had lost she does sometimes try to get ahead of herself and forgets the odd word or persons name ( a small price to pay ) which she then writes down
She says she'll be lucky to see her 60th birthday in october this year
She herself was a battered child and she did so much for the kids I grew up with who had bad upbringings
I met another lady who Dee looked after and she says she wouldnt be here now if it werent for Dee and her husband Richard who helped her when she was litearlly in the gutter
I told Dee this and also told her she made an impact and made a difference to peoples lives ...something to be very proud of
How cruel she won't even see any grandchildren and be as supportive as she was to us when we were kids.

Attention Photo Uploaders!
Posted by Madmandy, 26 January 2007
Would it be too much to ask that when the good old folks on SS add their old/new/venue photos that they actually tell us who is in them
I for one find it very frustrating looking the brill pics but not knowing who stars in them ?
I love browsing thru them looking at the soul community having a great time
celebrating birthdays anniversaries etc etc
But not knowing who is celebrating what
So a plea from me to all the piccy uploaders
please state who is in your photos or the venue or the celebration
Many many thanks Mand (nosey soulie)

I have realised its not easy to please everyone all of the time and to get things right so I wont moan at any promoter !
So to all of the clubs we visit we hope you all keep up the good work
and wish you every success for 2007
Mand The Happy Soulie
See you all very soon at a venue near you !

Sad news : Wilson " Willie Tee " Turbinton RIP

Yet another sad loss Thanks to John Smith for passing on the sad news.
Wilson "Willie Tee" Turbinton............ died yesterday of colon cancer
.........This is truly sad news.
Here in the UK, Willie was best known for his solo outings "Walking Up a One Way Street, "Thank You John" (both massive mod club hits), his NS scene anthems "First Taste of Hurt", "Teasin You", "Teasin You Again" (+ a couple of his later cuts for United Artists & Capitol) AND with funk fans for the Gaturs outings.
He toured here playing both funk & NS scene clubs and I got to meet him twice. He was a truly modest guy with a great extended family.
.....The posting (on a blues list) that announced his passing.....
Keyboardist, songwriter and producer Wilson "Willie Tee" Turbinton, an early architect of New Orleans funk and soul, died today of colon cancer. He was 63.
Mr. Turbinton secured his place in New Orleans music legend by producing and co-writing the Wild Magnolias' self-titled 1973 debut. That landmark recording and the subsequent "They Call Us Wild," also produced by Mr. Turbinton, largely introduced the Mardi Gras Indians' distinctive street beats and chants to the world.
"In a city of treasures, he was rich in taste and tradition," said record producer and longtime friend Leo Sacks. "The depth, breadth, scope and command of his piano playing were profound. He helped shape the sound of New Orleans for more than four decades."
Mr. Turbinton's passing follows that of his older brother, modern jazz saxophonist Earl Turbinton, on Aug. 3. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Martin Turbinton; a sister, Joyce Turbinton Gill; a daughter, Racquel Turbinton Bruno; and two grandchildren.
A funeral is scheduled for Sept. 22 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m., with a service to follow.

Kent 25 Years! A Special One Off Event - 19 Oct 2007 !!

October 19th is the date of an one off special event being held to mark the Kent Record Labels 25th Anniversary
The artists lined up for the night are Maxine Brown, Tommy Hunt, Mary Love, The Flirtations and Winfield Parker
The djs for the night are Ian Clark, Mick Smith and Ady C

The venue is  The Forum, 9-17 Highgate Road, Kentish Town, London
Ticket details: www.seetickets.com (0870 150 0044)
It was 1982, the mod revival was in full swing, disaffected Northern Soul fans were turning away from pop stompers and second rate disco and Ace Records had just acquired the Kent & Modern 60s soul catalogues. Ady Croasdell and Randy Cozens’ 6TS Rhythm & Soul Society was entertaining packed crowds at London’s legendary 100 Club and discerning soul fans demanded records inspired by the original 60s soul ethos.
Who would save them? Would it be a bird, would it be a plane or would it be Harboro Horace? You guessed it, the bird and plane were unavailable so HH knocked together “For Dancers Only” 16 tracks of pure 60s black soul beat. It caught the zeitgeist or hit the groove (depending on your school attendance record), sold by the carrier bag full and kept Horace out of the pubs for hours at a time while he worked on the imaginatively titled “For Dancers Also” sequel. We then had “Footstompers”, “Floorshakers”, “Right Back Where We Started From”, “Club Soul” and “Brainstormers”; solo LPs from Jackie Wilson, Maxine Brown, Chuck Jackson, The Impressions and Tommy Hunt. Just short of 100 slabs of 12” vinyl in all. Then it was the silver discs of “Dave Godin’s Deep Soul Treasures”, “Okeh; A Northern Soul Obsession”, “Rare Collectible & Soulful”, “Northern Soul’s Classiest Rareties”, “Mod Jazz”, “New Breed R&B”, and big selling solo items from James Carr, Irma Thomas, Dyke & The Blazers, Doris Duke and Eddie & Ernie. Not forgetting the good old fashioned 7” vinyl Town and City singles.
So 25 years later we reckon we’re owed a BIG party and we’ve arranged an authentic 60s soul revue in London Town about half a mile from where we started. The fabulous talents of Maxine, Tommy, Mary Love (who kicked off our first ever CD), The Flirtations aka The Gypsies and Baltimore’s own Winfield Parker will entertain and amaze you, with a top live big soul band playing their hearts out behind. It’s an incredible old venue, similar to the Apollo where these shows used to happen. Original 6TS DJ and Kent cover artist Ian Clark is coming out of retirement especially for this night and along with Mick Smith and Ady C, we’ll dance through to the early hours. Maybe Harboro Horace will turn up too!
