Davetay
========== whats the difference white pop soul or black rock and roll (the worse side of rnb i may add!) sorry Russ is my hero in terms of most of the stuff he played at wigan and ive got to stick up for him regards mark champion of the underdog!! Mark, I don't think anybody put up that in the 1st year alone the amount of LP tracks that Russ played. eg Four Seasons "I'm gonna change" Gladys Knight "Ain't no sun" Marvelletts "Your love can save me" Thelma Houston "I ain't going nowhere" Mr Bloe "Land of a 1000 dances" Mike Post "Afternoon of the rhino" Outsiders "Lonely man" Magnifent Men "Just walk in my shoes" Danny Wagner "This thing called love" Total Eclipes "6-0-Clock" Al Wilson "Passport" Excitiers "Movin too slow" Watts 103rd st R. B. "The joker" Just a few off top of my head, Russ did play Yvonne Baker before Ian Levine but it was off a S.S. emidisc like Strings a-go-go (Double cookin), Footsie etc. It was a few weeks later Ian got a real one, and not long after John Anderson got a few and most of the top DJs at the time had it. Also we can't forget the many inst's via S.S. that hit the decks in 1974. Russ did play some great stuff at Wigan, but also played some of the very worst, we all know what he's remembered for. Dave. Eddie Hubbard
When I first started going to Wigan , days after my 18th birthday in 1975 ,I thought for a couple of years Russ played some great sides , probably more responsible than anyone for Tobi Legend , which he pushed for ages before it finally took off , The Poppies " Pain in my heart " , Fidels " I'm giving you notice " , Paul Anka " Can't help loving you " which despite the colour of the Artists skin , is a great Northern side .Think he was one of the first with Bobby Diamond " Stop " wasn't he , though this was later on .Think Otis Blackwell was one of Russ's as well , though can't be sure .Russ used to played Sergio Mendes C/ U as Sue Hunt .Think Russ used to play Detroit Executives " Cool Off " and Keanya Collins " Love Bandit " as well ....Best,Eddie Link to comment Social source share

Wiganer1
Hi Mark, The guy helped turn an 'Underground Soul scene' into a 'Pop phenomenon' and many Soul Music fans find that hard to appreciate. Like getting the fox to look after the chickens, he was never a 'Soul Music' lover, by his own admission. No great sin in that in itself, but the detrimental affect that had on the 'Soul' scene in the North took years to recover. Fortunately, some of those who were attracted to the scene, ironically because of the 'publicity' generated at Wigan, stayed around long enough to experience and enjoy some real Soul Music. Sean ======== hi sean,,wouldnt disagree with you as i cant ,,i didnt start going til the end of an era,,,,some one must have enjoyed the tunes to keep it going for eight years!! Dave Thorley
I'm flogging a dead horse here He may have played a few nice tunes, he was rude the few times I tried to speak to him, and when Richard asked me to play there, he was like doctor death standing behind me at the decks. Only speak as I find. Had many a great night at Wigan that will live with me forever, met some life long friends there, Pete Lawson, Guy, Dave Withers, Tim & Butch to name but a few. The venue over all was immense and I stood and wept next to Tim doing the same as they played the last record on the first last night. Link to comment Social source share

TBH Dave, Russ would never win a poularity contest on the Northern scene but to be fair it was him who instigated the all nighters in 1973 & he wasn't the only DJ to play "suspect" soul records. A lot of DJs & promoters & CD compilers have made a "good living" out of Wigan Casino - not least all those who still "celebrate" what would have been Wigan Casino's (insert number between 9 & infinity!!) Guest
Apart from FW, did Russ actually discover any real 'soul' records. Was Yvonne Baker down to him? First time I heard "NEED A REPLACEMENT" - THE WINSTONS - CURTOM in Wigan Casino, Russ Winstanley played it! Don't know why people knock him so much, as he was no worse, sometimes better, than the average Nighter DJ at the time!! Rob Wigley
Think this thread has been mis-named, all points taken in above-Love Music was a Russ biggie and probably a "Discovery" "along comes Mary" was another of his from the same time. I think the thread should read records "Broken" by Russ-here's one-the most Wigan Pies eaten in one evening at the casino..... Paul Anka is a Russ sound, but not discovered by him. The dance floor was/ always seemed busy early on as well. But with the passage of time the records played by the other DJs Richard, Sam ,Gary, Pat & all especially in the last 2 years have in general, remained VERY sought after and have remained very hard to find. Where as Russ's you could probably still buy at around £5-£10 each The Casino was a WEEKLY all-nighter and very unique I met some great people there and had some fantastic times and I must say without Russ it would not have happened. And lets not forget Dean Parrish "I'm on my way" played at other places first-but forever a Casino sound! I agree Dave - the few times I was anywhere near him he was rude to pretty much everybody. His knowledge wasn't really there either - gotta great story to tell you when I see you next (not for public consumption). On the other hand would we have had a WC without him? To be honest, I'm not bothered about him one way or the other, his main crime (apart from the CD's in London fiasco) seems to be that he wasn't Dickie!
