BASED ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT SOMEONE WHO IS 49 IN 2010, WOULD HAVE JUST ABOUT BEEN OLD ENOUGH TO ATTEND THE CASINO IN 1981, HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE THERE ON THE FACE OF THIS PLANET WHO:

TOOK A CAMERA TO THE CASINO AND STILL POSSESS PHOTOGRAPHS?

TOOK A CASSETTE RECORDER ALONG AND STILL HAVE TAPES? e.g ones that still sound audible as opposed to muffled.

WERE IN A DECENT JOB AND....COULD AFFORD TO PURCHASE A CINE-CAMERA AND.... HAVE GENUINE FOOTAGE....INCLUDING SOUND RECORDING?

LOOK... WEVE ALL SEEN THIS ENGLAND, SOUL FUNCTION AND EVEN FOOTSIE ON TOTP! BUT, BEARING IN MIND OVER 8 YEARS 1000'S OF PEOPLE MADE THE PILGRIMAGE

We'd love to see some footage and good quality photo's. bear in mind, the 'run of the mill' cameras most folk had were pretty basic. i had a dreadful 110 jobbie. it took pic's but anything further away from close up was destined to be mediocre in quality and clarity. I have one photo of me in Mr M's and one of a friend in the main hall. both are awful quality.....

as for cine footage, that would be fab, fingers crossed, ya never know

thats the idea....somebody shot all the footage for the tv documentaries so its presumable ther may be some of the edited stuff boxed up gathering dust at the bbc or itv and the edited stuff could run into endless hours and its highly unlikely such evidence will see the light of day, but, for instance 250000 people went through those swing doors and a lot of those youngsters emigrated to all four corners, some still alive but even the deceased's relatives could have a tale to tell and souveniers. are we just going to settle for short clip re-runs?...sure most people werent aware of the importance of photogenetiscism and in the main they got blurred images, but for every ten of those there will be 1 visually perfect shot ....even with pure luck and we already have the evidence of such images...but we dont have a pictorial or dvd bible, a definition that says yes! this is it....til now its all fragmented. in this day and age we can buy the history of anything...concise anything. why cant we buy and hold in our hands the definitive wigan?. casino history

As a regular there, I have several "early" photos which are really crap-as Parkash said 110 cassette film and a 2 watt flash !!

i went to the catacombs in 73, prior to wigan and surprise, surprise there is even less photographic evidence of a legendary venue but wigan was a massive stage for everything, with huge crowds year in, year out ....just thinking out loud, imagination or not, there has to be a possibility that someone was privilaged to have a cine-camera. on the other hand as years passed cameras became more accessible and better quality so by 1979-81 there should be some great pictures. like i say this was a global phenomenon as we all know....so who knows if someone in france, usa, australia, japan, thailand etc, who came as a tourist or a brit who emigrated, might have something in their posession that nobody has ever seen. you have to consider all possibilities. as i suggested this should be a broad concensus, ive posted this as a way of jogging peoples memories like no other...... I CAN SEE PEOPLE ARE VIEWING IT SO ARE YOU INTERESTED OR NOT....I SAY THIS BECAUSE THERE APPEARS TO BE A LOT OF INQUISITVE POSTS ABOUT WIGAN....IT IS A MAGNETIC FASCINATION....DONT YOU THINK, UK AND THE REST OF THE WORLD, WE SHOULD TIE ALL OF THESE STRANDS TOGETHER BEFORE WERE ALL IN OUR COFFINS AND LEAVE A LEGACY FOR OTHER GENERATIONS TO UNDERSTAND?

In memory serves correct, and Taff should be able to verify, the only film inside the Casino that I know of was taken by Tom Hassett from Letchworth during the filming of This England doc during the breaks when the serious dancers took to the floor again after the cameras were off. Not sure where Tom or that film now are!

I had an ITT recorder,all together about 30 odd tapes, i let them go to some lad in France when i was on ANS. Billy

I had a cine 8 camara,no sound which was taken on footsie when it was on top of the pops. Transferred it to a cassette many years ago and to this day i can not find it. To have a film of footsie which was on top of the pops,is rarer than Frank Wilson.

as you are well aware even though I have lived in WOLVES 30 years I still miss everyone from them Days as going to All- Nighters back in the 7ts was very hard work, up until the Peterborough St Ives and even Samantha's and the 2 Cleethorpes venues opened Just around the time of this Photo and it made things a bit more handy not just for the Letchworth crowd but for all Lovers of Rare SOUL /Northern Soul in the 3 counties in Bedford & Cambridge Crowds, But as Mick has Always stated I am Pure Wigan Casino by that he means if a Record starts with Bells Vibes or Slay Bells and it is over 80 MPH I would buy it? where the Mick Smiths of the Scene are pure Blackpool Mecca & Torch and in Micks Case a MOD through and through were I am Boot Boy (Skinhead) through & through- Your remarks are Kind and the strange thing I still call you all the Kids when I am talking about every one from Letchworth and Taffy still calls me DAD strange that and even Andy C for some unknown reason I seem to include him s one of the Kids why as he is my age beggars belief Properly because he has not got the Cockney traits of Mick & the Wild Wide Boy Aggression of the Kilworths??(ferrell), The Film is with Tom who I last met with in Mcdonalds 20 years ago and I told him to get the film put on Video and as far as I no it is the only movie film taken at the Casino, unless someone on here states other wise and as for requests about Photos from 67 to 75 most photos were the ones from booths on a strip, and also in that period of time the majority of people on the Northern Soul Scene came from the same type of background Working Class and to be seen with a Camera would of been like saying you were Gay back then & even Ian Levine could not do that as it would be a Kicking, this was only 2 years or so from the 67 act and we were all bigots then as we were all kids? Hence my right up on Drugs which is a good link to Charlie Frost as he was one of the few people who did not use any Drugs at all, And the Flat was owned by Joe Maylin, can you remember me breaking into the chemist near buy and my lookout bottled it and there was I casualty doing the place what was his name he lived in the fleets in Leys Avenue that Taffy lived in?? Used to go from 1975 until 1979, with the Doncaster & Rotherham crowd and met up with a group from Rochdale. I have got a number of photos and a cassette from the Friday night Wheel & Torch night. As i remember at that time walking around generally taking photos was frowned upon, and if someone wandered about with a cine camera, i know for certain that they would have been warned off in no uncertain manner.

see, i was right about the age limit for 80/81 the theory bears out....i was 16+ in 74 when i first went hence, 52 now so.....you can see there is a group of generations who associate exclusively with the casino and its a fair bet that the oldest group would range between 65 and 68 so some old soulies are already collecting their pensions but dont want anyone to know!. its this group who would have the most vivid recollections i reason and probably some of the earliest photos. nearly 900 views so it must make interesting and intense debate. i dont know if its like talking to big brother, but if soulsource took over this thread and allocated a unique seperate section where all this information could be stored then possibly more people would contribute if they new where to direct it. in the meantime i bet its making many a mouth salivate at the prospect of this film footage turning up but, like i say with so many tourists having visited the casino, there has to be a likelihood, even if remote, that someone has something else of value.

I don't know Mike, I still think it must have been a short incidental clip from a more recent documentary. Central tv did one about Pete Waterman about 5 years ago and included Northern dancing footage which I'd never seen before and as you know, I was sure I had everything. I used to have a really good friend way on the inside at the BBC, he got me tons of Bowie stuff which had never been seen since the day it was broadcast, also three or four full episodes of TOTP from 71-72, sadly he left and I've lost touch with him now.

there is itn video libary database some where online that may help/confirm

when see threads like this do wonder if anyone ever followed up that auction in the link, the episode was listed, know the price was high, but given the collecting side of things and price of vinyl wonder what value coudl put on it, or say if a promoter got hold sure could do something with it to cover costs

local tv stations may have something, there was that saturday banana saturday morning tv thing planned which got cancelled cause of unions , maybe others did similar ?

Tough call but would be fantastic if some unseen footage was unearthed, I have pics but as most other peoples shot on a 110 & mostly looking down at the dance floor from the right hand side balcony, I'll dig them out & post them, I had a fair few tapes but I think there may only be one or two in a box somewhere & the quality wouldn't be up to much with a mic dangling over the top of the balcony & invariably the batteries running out, I might try & put them on the computer to see if I can clean up the sound & add some clarity.

when see threads like this do wonder if anyone ever followed up that auction in the link, the episode was listed, know the price was high, but given the collecting side of things and price of vinyl wonder what value coudl put on it, or say if a promoter got hold sure could do something with it to cover costs

local tv stations may have something, there was that saturday banana saturday morning tv thing planned which got cancelled cause of unions , maybe others did similar ?

I'm sure it's insiders smuggle most of the stuff out. I've got 3 tracks by the Damned from 1977 from an unbroadcast show directed by Mike Mansfield. Never shown anywhere.

Ah now thats weird because when I told Eddie I'd seen this yesterday for the first time since it's broadcast, it looked exactly how I remembered it to be. Three minutes of footage viewed just once 35 years ago, it's amazing that we can still get a picture of it in our heads at all. I have to say it made me feel very strange watching it, I actually felt like crying, I don't know why, very emotional, like a bit of lost youth coming back to me yeah I know, but thats what it felt like

trick be ask central where clip come from and any more of it

sorry if its causing confusion, naturally im composing this as i go along and some of the strong statements i feel have to be voiced in capitals, almost in bold type like trying to make people sit up and notice without doing it aurally, with the pretense that it actually is. it certainly seems to work as over a 1000+ people have viewed it and now we are getting a response from our antipodean brothers. the fact that you have responded suggests that the snowball effect has every chance of succeeding....if it does, it'll need somebody bigger than this ordinary joe to turn it into a serious workable project. to everyone else out there, pics and tapes are of great relevance now so it goes to show they are not in scant supply and some of you are posting them, maybe now others wont find it so hard to reveal their previously hidden or forgotten past especially if they think its for the greater good of the scene......oh look........no capitals....im an observant person!. so keep it going, lets have 1500 views and 100 posts by sunday and next week, 2000 views and 200 posts hopefully by that time somebody influential will jump in and say " lets get it on".

can i just add ( on the vicky baines thread ) to me the epitome of spine-tingling, hairs standing up on the back of your neck dancers. 1978 could never be more vivid, amongst some of the mediocrity, this was a beacon to show wigan could still dish the tunes.....stand on the balcony?....come on malc where's yer 40 inchers?....on the floor mate, on the floor!

Hi Soulsters especially those who have creative minds!..This could be the latent start of what I believe to be the same desire that the Writer/Editor/Producers of Fanzines must of dreamed of when creating material that they believed at the time they realised that there was a gap in the market where certain information that they had gathered over the years was not lost in the manure of time?.. A few days back in a article Pete S informed a member of the meaning of the rubber # stamp on 6ts DECCA labels was all about..this took me back nearly 40 years and triggered of the feelings of enlightenment and my increased knowledge base and also the individual who told me this info made me even more to collect 45s and as such the Sage to Student relationship started and it is this knowledge sharing that is the backbone of the very essence of the Rare SOUL Scene, as we all have our own personal Sages and the Scene has it's top Sages even if you never met them or were 2 young their Names are so familiar to us All and so much so some of these well known names have taken on PANTOMINE roles as Good Guys or the Bad Villain if I say "Alan Day & TORCH" Vs "Ian Levine DJ" what do you think? it is just the same if you say the word "Vietnam" if you auto thoughts are of WAR and not of a modern and Beautiful Country as the War finished over 30 years ago and your opinion is contaminated and biased to USA Hollywood's interpretation of GOOD against BAD and the issues of FACT Vs FICTION if not put into context or documented as History of our Sub-Culture that we covert with a passion, so much so it scares or confuses the new people of the Scene hence no young blood as the patronage of the Soul Scene has become dictatorial and right wing almost anti-social and unwelcoming and strong element of Dictatorial Capitalists who are unchallenged in what you here and don't here??

Over the last few years like Swish and a few more like minded people it has been a personal desire to write a book about my troubled life which has been clothed in the youth sub cultures from the late 6ts into the early 7ts under a working title of "more than SKIN Deep" the book was not about just Photos alone but what lay behind the picture? in other words try and put the picture in correct context? It still baffles myself and if you no better but the History of the period 68 to 74 seams to myself already and deliberately omits the the working class Youth Sub Cultures that I am speaking of all you see is the Middle Class students of France and the UK getting beaten up Tariq Ali and so on Marc Bolan Glam Kensington Market Sasha & Biba and then its Prog Rock and Punk Rock all reference to the 68 to 71 Skinhead is omitted or there are the familiar clips from the TROJAN film on the Wembley Concert of Jamaican Reggae (the story on that film is a good one as the whole film is very Rare ask PeteR as he is one of the few with it??)

To conclude this thread should be achieved and I for one will be very happy in helping it manifest into reality with SOULSORCE DAVE KIL

If got it right you are calling for a archive to be put together of video, photos and such from 70s, you mentioned a possible dvd and a book, and trying to get someone involved

Prefer to talk about in feedback, but if I read what you are saying right , there are many ways the site and its features can assist in such a project

There is the gallery which can quite easily be used for images.

Can set up a members category where all can upload in a few minutes

Video clips are slightly different as refosoul can be used to store/display video clips but it does encode them to a site format

However it could be a reference rather than an archive

Obviously with such a project there can be some concerns, whos the driving force, aim of it all, copyright issues ( not sure how a dvd or book would work)

but yep, sure any of the site features can be used

If let us know what after more than happy to assist , be it get things going with image categories or whatever

i guess ive hit a nerve and a lot of people like the sound, but really, im just making the proposition that this should be an affair where everyone gets invloved in putting something together and no one person is charged with taking the credit because that leads to inevitable critisism and politicing....i also dont know how to use any of your other facilities, its like going back to primary school. nearly 1500 views, i knew this would be a totally different wigan thread because its saying dont have 300 different casino memories going on at the same time when the reality is they could all be under one banner and actually bring about something, hard cold and solid and bought for money across a counter and not forever "virtual". im pleased soulsource and yourself think this could be a life changing opportunity, giving people the chance to have in their hands, a reference to the past when the memories are starting to fade....just a glance will keep bringing it all flooding back.

I'm sure I remember a there being a contingent from this neck of the woods going up to TOTP for it though...I guess they could have just been in the audience crowd rather than on the stage though?

Sounds like a project that would be appreciated by many, hopefully this thread has stirred some interest and helps get things going.

There are members involved in publishing, have you spoke to any of them ?
