It's possible that the easiest way for a lot of men to express their emotions is through music.It's hard for a lot of men to talk openly about the complex emotions of subjects such as love and heartbreak.Soul music usualy covers these emotions and men can use it as a kind of escapest emotional transmitior, women usualy have no problem with desiers of the heart and open expression of love and desire therefore become a minority and need no form of disguised emotional transmition that's why all women are attractive and men like football as a Buddhist I openly declair that I love everyone regards Simon.

I disagree with dancers being mostly men. My husband and many of my male friends comment all the time that if it wasn't for women dancing at venues, especially soul nights, they would be fcuked.

Are you really bothered? It has certainly never bothered me.

Women are either dancing, putting on their make up, or too busy talking about other women to have time to look through record boxes

I'm not bothered about that because I'm just happy to meet people who love the music as much as I do unessential if they are men or women. I'm just genuine wondering why there is so few women who really are active when it comes to dj, collecting records and so on.. I have hard to believe it's just a coincidence.

My take on it is this:

To (most) females, Northern Soul represents a night out socialising, dancing and listening to great music. To us males however, it's about the vinyl, the labels, the DJ's, the memories, the mystique behind the recordings, discovering 'new sounds' and paying outrageous sums of money to own the rare artifacts that are the fuel that fires the obsession that is 'Northern Soul'.

And the beer of course..

It's pretty much the same wherever you go or whatever you are into !! Mod, Skinhead, Rockabilly, Punk, Indie, Skater, Reggae, Hip Hop Drum n Base, Techno, Goa, House, Schnitzel & Hack ...... so I guess every scene is male dominated although to have more ladies at the decks & on the floor ect. makes it all the better !!!

I'm pretty active and I'm a woman. Not all women want to be DJ's or collect records. It certainly isn't a gender thing as it doesn't take much strength to look through a box of records.

i said that to rob messers at luton one night and he threw a wobbler and said watch this and he was straight on the floor for the next toon....did some nice tricks and good footwork and walked off with his chest puffed out .....not bad i said.......dont think he spoke to me again all night

I wouldn't go anywhere without my mrs, then again i usually rely on her to get me home te he. Oh & when it comes to women on the scene, it's usually them that gets the floor moving cos us blokes have to have a few beers inside us before we get up on the floor , some come on girls, you're the true heros IMHO

It could be more male dominated because of when it started ie: the 6Ts. Different world in those days, men were dominant in most walks of life, business, politics etc etc. Women were bought up to be homemakers, so wouldn't necessarily have had the same drive to do nighters and dance to soul music. Just a thought

He means that the soul scene reflects society, i don`t know where or what country you come from but just look around & you will see that men dominate society... fact, If you feel so strongly.......... set up a female collective of promoters & DJ`s . You may as well have asked why there are not more women astronauts or grave diggers, you should ask the ladies why they don`t CHOOSE to be promoters or DJ`s. The 100 club used to put on a female only [ DJ`s ] niter & i used to love it.

Although my wife collects, besides her, i know plenty of ladies who collect records. One who left england many years ago to go stateside with her family, and returned about 6 years ago, carried on collecting whilst stateside, now lives in north yorkshire & Wow!!!

there's some right misogonistic crap on here, can I first apologise for some of the attitudes expessed, allbeit in a lighthearted manner. IMHO, the scene can only bennifit from a inreased inclusion of more females in active roles on the scene, personally some of the best dj's Ive heard in recent times have been female. Diva Di, Sandi Harpin and of course Joan have all impressed in a major way and something all the these have in common is a lack of ego , sensitivity for the dancefloor and an understanding that rarity have nothing to do with filling the floor, something many male DJ's would do well to heed.

Agreed Win, plenty of male DJs dance. At Empty Bottles the other week all the DJs were dancing. John Western's a good dancer, Dr Pickles even brings special dancing shoes with him and Mark Freeman is never off the floor at nighters.

Hi All, and what a good question, I will be brief and to the point, in the early days many women (girls) were on the scene and in some way as clubbers they were the original ladettes, equality was one of the scenes quality's however today's scene attracts much older people sadly,and most of the early Northern Soul scene was not based around male mid life crisis, and obsessive behavuaral traits, added to this men are possessiveness by nature and women tend to lack assertion to defuse envy and jealousy that women have to suffer if a female partner asserts an independent role, in short, the average male treats women as possessiveness, and automatically assumes that if their partner goes out all night, she will be unfaithful and become struck down by nymphomania with every man? the average male when it comes to females, sexual cognition is on par with a dog on heat?.

Also the average male does not relate to the vulnerabilities that women live there daily lives, MARS & VENUS comes to mind,

It was an innocent wondering who seem to have developed to a discussion about what's the difference between women and men. And some comments have been quite offensive.. today no one would compare black and white people in the same way that many of you have compared women and men.

It should not matter what color, race or gender you are as long as you love and respect the music. but obviously from reading the respond on this topic there is some people(not just men) who have an attitude against women on the scene... and perhaps that's the main reason why many women just choose to not take as much place as men. (It would be nice to get this confirmed or rejected from more women here.) That's at least the most rational answer I got so far on why the scene is so male dominated.

HI , looking at some of the comments wrote, it is easy to upset us men when it comes down to a mostly male dominated scene,

in my case , i thinks it was just one of those 70s things where alot of us guys used to do things in groups, i know they used to be about 20 or so of us

that use to hang around together, friday nights was like, meet up in the old ex,servicemens club, then off to an event which in our case was assembly rooms rotherham,, cliffton hall rotherham, and others ,, the girls had a night on the town, (top rank sheffield nite spot and things like that) which played a mix of club soul,

and these days its like having the old harnby railway set up we think its all for men, but time's have changed and the soul scene is all about couples having a great night on the scene again, meeting up with old friends that try and dance like they did back in the day, but the legs have now gone i dance like my grandad at a wedding (lol)

but like I said we just think, football, hornby railway sets 'joke',, and norhtern soul was male dominated in the 70s,, and thats why alot of men are back on the scene again,

so on that note, here's to all the old soulies we have lost over the years and all the old soul singers who have made our scene so great over the years,

I think it's just that men are naturally more train spotter like and competitive...mine's bigger than yours etc. I collect a bit, not so much as I used to but I wouldn't ever want to dj and I have a loathing for the record bar since my early days at niters when I was either ripped off or patronised anytime I went anywhere near one.
