Roughly translated it means my heart that beats softly. I think mon ami.

No it translates to " My Heart Beats Softly " and I got me cat no. wrong , it's 13425 from 65 , I was close !!!

I quite like that, wonder how it would go down at a soul night? Must be plenty of French and other European language versions of soul songs, Motown did some if I remember correctly.

...and not one of them is a French language cover version. However, just to confuse things, labels and picture sleeves often give the original American song title in brackets.

Funnily, I played the French 'version' of 'Comin' home baby' at a night not so long ago and it went down a treat with everybody except one young skinhead who came up to the decks and insisted that I was playing Mel Torme at the wrong speed!

I've got over 100 of these French versions downloaded but never actually played any of them yet!

I'll go get some more in a minute. If you want me to round them all up and compile them for you on a disc I could probably do that. There's no legit stuff, it's all collectors compilations.

There's going to be a lot of crap in that lot (I know, I've found some of it already), so what I'll do is go through the list bit by bit and listen to a few seconds on YouTube or iTunes where possible. That way I can sort out the dross from the interesting. Any that I really like I'll then look to find on 45.

Of that lot, I liked just eight! Two of note:

* Charlotte Leslie - Les Filles c'est fait pour is a take on The Capitols We got a thing that's in the groove

* Petula Clark - Donne-moi des fleurs is her own song Gotta tell the world but with French lyrics. The title translates as "Give me the flowers", so I guess that the French version has different words all together rather than being a translation from the English.

Nancy Holloway is another artist worth looking out for - soulful 60s vocals in a French style.
