Buzzing from a weekend of non stop soul. Kinda got me thread happy!

Don't know if this one's been done before (shoot me if it has!)

Simple question:

What is the most soulful record, in your opinion, to have made the UK pop charts?

I know a lot of people rate Dorothy Moore's Misty Blue as being one of the few deep soul records to gave crossed over. I've always found it too country for my taste.

Can I suggest Al Green's monster, Lets Stay Together?

It's hard to come to this track with fresh ears, since we've all heard it a trillion times, but surely there has never been a more soulful song and performance to grace the UK top 40?

Fab track Pete, but did it actually scrape the charts? Fair play to the British public if it did.

Yeah, but would you dance to `em if you heard `em now? I would dance to my choices:

Curtis Mayfield ,Harold Melvin and Stevie Wonder and maybe The Commodores- The Zoo(The Human Zoo)

Edited by The Soul Intention

Dance to the music, sly and the family stone.

And of course...(I`m surprised at you lot-overlooking the obvious-)

MARVIN-GRAPEVINE

OTIS- DOCK OF THE BAY

Say no more...

Can a record that charted be MORE soulful?

And don`t anyone mention GEORGE BAD BENSON-SUPERSHI*

Wasn't really thinking of danceability - just soul content. But, Move On Up must be one of the most soulful records to grace the charts.

Holland & Dozier - Why can't we be lovers - Invictus

Another one I bought with my school lunch money, and it was well worth starving for.

Paul Mooney

Tired of being alone by AL Green. A sumptuous piece of Willie Mitchell brilliance.

Probably the most soulful record ever to hit the pop charts - and to feature on TOTP.

What went wrong???

Paul Mooney

there's loads but always like sydney youngblood 'if only i could'

also 'footsteps' womack and womack, the ten city thing was great

bit further back isley's this old heart of mine, the jackie wilson stuff that charted mid-80s

Sugar Pie Guy - The Jones

The Hustle - Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony

Feel The Need In Me - Detroit Emeralds

I Can Prove It - Tony Etoria

Bad Luck - Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes

Dolly My Love - The Moments

Disco Lady - Johnny Taylor

Honky Tonk - James Brown

I think these all made the charts way back in the 70's ...........................................

Well there have to be a few but I would plump for three:

Al Greens "Lets Stay Together" because it was played at my wedding as our song and it proved prophetic. Still happily married.

The Four Tops version of "Its All In The Game". A totally soulful version of a standard that I never cared for. They made it their own.

Any track from the O'Jay's "Ship Ahoy" album - did they all chart? The title track still has the power to move me after so many years.

Finally, I cannot understand why people think Diana (d)Ross is soulful, but thats life. Different strokes eh?

I would go for the wonderful Minnie Ripperton 'Loving You' - just perfection!

Paddy

Almost forgot "FAITH,HOPE & CHARITY - TO EACH HIS OWN" I'm sure this was in the charts, is it still popular :D

Odyssey 'If You're Looking for A Way Out'

I can't listen to that record without getting very upset - it's a shattering performance.

BILLY PAUL-"ME AND MRS JONES"
