I was speaking to Russ W over a year ago about the phenomenal turnover of records at Wigan Casino and if something wasnt taken to instantly then it was dropped. He quoted John Bowie-Youre Gonna Miss A Good Thing........amazing record but it just didnt work.Dropped after 2 weeks.Tobi Legend-Time Will pass you by...Russ started playing I Can Take It Like A Man after Time ,,,,,bombed.I bought it and think its an amzing record.Im finding that Im buying more and more of these records that fell through the cracks. The records that werent instant there seem to be better than a lot of supposed new discoveries imho.John Bowie I asssociate with the 80s.I also associate The Chandlers with the 80s another one Russ said didnt take off as it wasnt instant enough and had a tricky timechange.Come on forgotten Wigan soul sounds that fell through the cracks or are lauded as 80s 90s classics...when in fact they were failed Wigan spins.

  •   Memory is a strange thing as I have a real strong memory , association of the John Bowie tune with Wigan which I'm not sure I would have had if it had only been played for a few weeks -

  • John Bowie was first played by Pep a couple of weeks before the 4th anniversary, at the 4th anniversary, and a couple of week after it, then it was mass imported by Soul Bowl and the record came off t

Pete don´t think Dean Parrish was played at the Torch? i met Swish on Hilton park services the night he had had it stolen(still covered up)  we were on the way back from the Mecca and the Torch had been closed, complicated nights those days between the Torch closing and Wigan opening the services were full with the"Wide awake crowd"

Just thought it was slightly pre Wigan Steve but happy to be wrong

What about Shep Fool To Fool.  Remember that from the early days, but possibly pre Wigan.

I'd go with you as it being pre Wigan, remember Barry Tasker playing it at The Pendulum and saying that they had a few in Global--

probably in the space between Torch closing-Wigan opening

little oscar i tried supreme blues. Just getting appreciated and played

Wigan spin? More detail please...who...when...?

kev it was played by pat brady i think its on a casino tape i uploaded in refosoul

Cheers Toad,i'll take a listen. How did it go down with the dancers?

only had a few plays it was so differant to what was beeing played ,sort of blues funk. Both sides are on you tube btw.

Wasn't played for more than a month.

The story of Dean Parrish is well documented all over the place.

Ian D knows it as do many more.

Swish had played it at the Central (covered up).

It never really caught on.

It was touted around for yonks and none of the big

name Dj.s were interested.

Deffo not Torch Pete as I can remember Kegsy (who discovered it) begging me @ the Central, Richard @ Va-Va's, Levine @ the Mecca and Russ @ Wigan to play it. First person to play it @ a big venue was actually Russ believe it or not. I'm sure Kegsy will confirm......

Ian D :D

William Cummings, Butch says it was a £4 rarity on Soul Bowl in 1974 then £1 special in 1975 when he and Tim got copies, it's on here somewhere. Like you say though, Pete don't think it was played till years later from what I could find out.

I've got William Cummings on a Keb tape from 1983.

Almost 10/10 Ian but Swish had the record before I did.

So Russ played it first at Wigan so it must have been early Casino. When was it first reprod or bootlegged and was it ever dropped from the playlist.?

little oscar i tried supreme blues. Just getting appreciated and played

Now, THAT is the sort of reply I was looking for on the other thread.

Sadly wasn't to be.... :(

So a lifespan of about 8 weeks then.So the bootleggers were a major factor in the lifespan of a record as well as importers and dancefloor reaction. No wonder the deejays covered up records. If a record was to have legs...it had to be covered up....the importers not to offload a few hundred copies.....or someone pressing hundreds of copies or finding out its identity.I wonder what record had the longest covered up time there until it was uncovered.

What about The Parliaments - My Rainy day, covered as The Masqueraders must be at least 10 years that I know of, could be wrong & no-doubt someone will let me know if so.

How was this a Wigan reject then?

I don't think this was a c/u for 10 years either.

There should have been a quote with this but I obviously did something wrong, it was a reply to the question on here about longest c/u and I think I'm pretty close with The Parliaments, perhaps Chalky could tell us or I'll ask Butch next time I see him, Soul Sam uncovered it 3 or 4 years ago at Whitby and I can remember Butch playing it when we started back at Nighter's years ago & it had been covered up for years then. :hatsoff2:

Wiganer have you got any dated playlists as these would probably go a long way to working out how long a records shelf life was.I would be interested in the Frank Wilson especially as Cecil Washington seems to be more of a Wigan Classic than Wilson.

Here a few odd balls my old grey matter can remember

California In Crowd "Happiness In My Heart" played in1975

Rotary Connection "Teach Me How To Fly" played in 1975 (Alan Rhodes)

Brian Bennett "Chase Side Shoot Up" played in 1974 / 1975 I think, John Vincent spin, covered up as "Soul A Go Go" by Bob Wilson (it was theme for BBC golf)

Bullet "Willpower Weak Temptation Strong"

I loved Tobi Legend from it's first play, it is still my favourite record (and not because of 3 before 8)

bloody hell..remember all those..bullet was very popular but only for couple weeks..a russ spin..

Right...UK records.Owner Jonathan king more well known for Una paloma Blanca Everyone's going to the Moon,Genesis,Piglets ans nefarious activities with boys.We have read about Dave Mcaleer and Pye disco demand. What was Kings labels story.Dean parish second release on 17.1.75.Was it dropped from the playlist after this? and revived? Number 3 was the Devonnes I'm assuming in 75 booted on an orange Colossus. Was the boot after or before the UK release. This record never seems to get played anymore although it must have been a big record.Anyone know the other UK label release

Hoagy Lands isn't it?

I never heard Dean Parrish is a playlist spin, only ever as the last record, so presumably after it came out (on US Laurie reissue before UK issue) it was probably dropped and Russ then decided to use it as the ender - unless he already was using it.

So Dean Parish was slightly pre Wigan ..had about a year as a play until the Laurie US reissues hit the shores then Russ dropped it as an upfront record and used it as an ender.UK King USA records then reissued it in Jan 75 which should have killed it off as a play. Was it ever dropped?.Next one is Russ Kev and Richard...Richard is holding a copy of The Frees taking it away on UK Philips.A white Dutch stomper.I'm guessing that this is an early Wigan picture.Anybody remember when this was spun?

At a guess, '74. It never took off though. It was a feature in Richard's box for ages.

Brenda Lee Jones  Your the Love of my Life (although the numbering system was different)

I first heard Dean Parrish at the Raven in Whitchurch spun by Sam

also heard Frank Beverley and the Poets (Two Hearts)

Not Kelly Garrett but the Blues Busters in fact.

Double Crossing was the instrumental to Bobby Mandoplh's "Gotta Get You Back" it was released (legally?) credited to the Cliff Goldsmith Orchestra  - on vault if I remember correctly.

I never knew that!  In fact I've never heard of it.  Learn something every day here.

Not sure about The Admirations, thought 76 was slightly early for that, don't remember it til mid 77 but could be wrong.

hi kev .. loves the answer isnt kelly garrett but the equally fabulous love is the answer by the blues busters on minit - one of the finest soul tunes russ has ever spun,,,

Mark what was the Something of Value? I'm assuming Contenders is You Gotta Do.Thers not that many covered up here either.Maybe Something was the Del Royals or Barclays version?? I wonder what shelf life Tommy Hunt had as I'm sure it would have been a play prior to the Spark release and then dropped. You never hear any of these out...Blanche Carter not in vogue ..Tommy too well known and it has been hammered over the years..Case of Love...never heard the inst out.

I've got something of value - male singer, can't remember the name, definitely not Del Royals and Barkley didn't come out til 79.   Contenders correct.  Tommy Hunt was played for ages before it was released and was a huge, huge record at the Casino.
