Earl Van Dyke And The Soul Brothers Soul Stomp C/w Hot N' Tot

One of the extremely elusive UK Stateside Motown release and a MOD instrumental anthem from the pens of Richard Street & Berry Gordy, Earl gives it his unparalleled keyboard wizardry.

This copy in the 1964 non-hit UK press in fine clean condition. Both labels are perfect, vinyl inspection only reveals the briefest light sleeve brush hairline blemishes in strong light. You couldn’t hope for, in 2013 to acquire a finer copy of this record that is still an annoying gap in most-British Tamla Motown 45 collections.

Starvue Upward Bound

Immaculate and still snugly tucked inside the shrink wrap.

Includes the wonderful - non-45 track - “Put The BS Aside” plus stand-out tracks “Body Fusion” & “Love Affair”

Created in Chicago in 1980 whilst British soul was just started to embrace the Jazz-Funk phenomenon. Other than the more discerning pure-soul venues “BS” has not really broken though to the public, despite it’s blinding quality, but that will change, as we’ve said before, everything that’s great on the rare soul scene eventually goes viral; “Put The BS Aside” fits that category.

Condition of cover, labels and vinyl could not be finer!

Tokays Baby, Baby, Baby (you're My Heart's Desire)

My five favourite words!

Detroit vocal-group Northern Soul!

Uplifting finger-clicking mid-tempo, rich in soulful vocals and vibes. Some years back this was a very-real dance-floor pleaser, in recent times I can’t remember hearing it, at all. I’m so impressed by this tune after it’s unwarranted absence, I dug my collection copy out and put it straight into the DJ box.

For my personal style of set, it fits in perfectly as too it would for so many others. A possible Northern Soul renaissance for this Tony Clarke & McKinley Jackson beauty would seem likely, as occasional backtracking to find true quality has always been a smart Northern Soul DJing policy.

Click the soundfile and once again enjoy a rare feelgood mover…

Shuwr Hi, Hi, Hi, Hi, C/w Music Master

Extremely obscure off-the-wall 1980 Boogie!

Both sides give up weird and wonderful mixture electro / disco / funk packed with beats, special effects that giving the impression of pre-historic House on a label i’ve never encountered before.

Obviously not remotely anything to do with rare-soul-dance but of it’s genre they don’t come any obscurer than this super-rarity!

Precious Three I Need A Man

Awesome Nashville girl-group groove dripping with soul!

As you’d expect from Robert S. Riley, a producer writer name that keeps cropping up on near-all Nashville rarities along with Ted Jarrett the pair crafted so many limited press greats, especially on the Ref-O-Ree label which has evolved into quite a collectors label on the back of their outstanding work.

This record seems to be the second most-elusive in the series.

So listen to gathering of sisters guided by a man who has no interest whatsoever in making anything remotely commercial - just great soul is his only motivation.

Paul Sindab I Was A Fool C/w Yeah, I Never Knew

WOW!

First label before Powertree!

Stick Evans manages to create studio rivalry on this Big City Latin influenced Northern Soul / Popcorn groove, caused whilst a booming vocal, lifts itself to screaming pitch, as he jostles for position over the horns & bongos and the battle makes for an unavoidable dance-floor rush!

Totally irresistible hipshaker, as right today as it was at it’s height during that Golden “Stafford” era.

A Stand-Out Tune…on this label it a Stand-Out trophy-piece.

Sharon Tandy Now That You're Gone C/w Hurtin' Me

South Africa’s answer to Dusty Springfield! with an Extremely RARE 1965 UK DEMO and in my humble opinion an overlooked Northern Soul gem!

Also very rare on it’s USA ABC 10650 release this sneaked out over here as her 2nd. UK release. Why this solid slab of Northern Soul has never had any turntable exposure at the clubs is a mystery. When you consider the weak girly dross that was played at Wigan Casino & Cleethorpes Pier during the 70s, I can only presume the jocks never had this to play, as it knocks the socks off, Liz Christian, Barry St. John, Lorraine Silver and the like.

Sharon’s vocal-prowess of course took her to greater things at Atlantic records recording in Memphis with Isaac Hayes who exposed her muscular voice to even greater effect.

So now listen to two sides from the mid-60s and you too will be wondering how the vinyl foragers of the 70s and the Jocks they supplied with all manner of Northern Soul vinyl-wannabees, missed this one.

TOTALLY SUPERB

Joe E. Young & The Toniks Soul Buster

London 60’s British Soul band with their family roots in Jamaica.

The Toniks were formed in 1966 and comprised of: Anthony Barman, Oscar Knight, Sam Southwell, John Seally & Joe E. Young. Later growing into a 6 man outfit who played most-all the renown All-Nite London Clubs on the circuit - receiving particularly good reviews in “Home Of The Blues” who’s writers were regulars at “The Tiles”, “The Scene” etc.

Before you today is an example of their work that actually went to vinyl. The 5 tune soundclip reveals stunning MOD style versions of such “Wheel” greats “60 MINUTES OF YOUR LOVE” “OPEN THE DOOR TO YOUR HEART” etc.

We have chosen 5 tracks from the 12 but could easily have filed all of them. As this group who boasted two saxophonists, capture the “Soul” mood of Britain in the 60s, if you want to be able to hark back to those formative MOD years, this very rare album will take you there.

Dean Parrish Tell Her

British Red and White’s is there anything more alluring to the over 55, British Soul-Boy?

So when it is in the form of an enduring “Twisted Wheel” anthem, many Brit-collectors will find it all too seducing. Both labels are flawless, vinyl is magnificent with only the very lightest possible signs of use.

Gaze on the scan then unleash the power that is Mr. Parrish’s vocal onto a Bert Russell composition that all the other versions get nowhere near Dean’s booming vocal! Stay with the recording because we think the previously passed over flipside, is a strong candidate for “Beat Ballad Heaven”

George "gino" Washington Another One C/w I Love You Oh So Much

This listing is especially for the serious about Detroit and artist discographies.

An extremely rare Gino Washington 45 carry all the traits of the Motor City at he start of the 60s, a rippling R&B shaker reminiscent of Berry Gordy’s early Motown recordings.

We can find no evidence of this 45 on artist or label listings before this copy was discovered. A collectors piece for the Detroit historian/compleatist who needs to own the starting point of this great Soul artist’s colourful career.

Burgess Gardner & Chuck Bernard craft the perfect piano led arrangement for Syl’s growling vocal snarl at..punchy brass prompts and the piano breaks soothe, to great effect as a Northern Soul stroller takes shape.

Johnny Hendley My Baby Came From Out Of Nowhere C/w I'll Tell The World

When it comes to Los Angeles Northern Soul you are looking at one of the very rarest examples.

and a STOCK copy with two sides!

Since it’s discovery in 1976, falling out of a miscellaneous Bob Catteneo 100 count soul pack, this 45 has remained ridiculously hard to find, and if you are one of the elite who actually a copy the likelihood is it’s a promo with the blank flipside.

So let’s talk about Johnny Hendley singing without “The Weirdest”; he must have been inspired by “Billy Stewart” as flies through a full arrangement of vibes, sax, horns and chirping girl group choruses punctuated with perfect Ululation at the very best moments.

Unique in it’s make-up, unforgettable in it’s style, with Joey Jefferson again showing off his skills in the studio building with Ray Jackson a fantastic backing track.

Flip it over, and your treated to a slab of Los Angeles Boo-Ga-Loo, an horn-packed instrumental that kicks ass..

Bobby Treetop So Sweet So Satisfyin'

FLAWLESS not a blemish on either labels or the vinyl!

The mysterious Bobby Treetop, a man who was credited with only two 45s and both had the power to demolish the floor with their chockablock productions, where all and sundry are skilfully whisked up into a blancmange of quivering Northern Soul.

From the first piano note you know this is gonna be a special, quickly joined by vibes, then blaring brass, wild fuzz guitar intrudes ad refuses to go away, girls answer the irrepressible lead vocal. Who but Abner Spector’s could conjure up this mix of instruments & make it work so well. Just like “Wait Til I Get To Know You” this was a firm early 70s fave, but maybe the scarcity of the original and the repro have limited it turntable airings.

Oldies DJ’s this is the way to go, turn heads of the punters who had like me forgotten just how darn good this is.

Gerri Hall Who Can I Run To C/w I Lost The Key

Not only Fantastic New Orleans Northern Soul but also the sought-after “bongo” mix deadwax 174-1719 GOS Nashville Matrix 86.

Two of the NOLA’s VIP’s collaborate on this relentless NS Dancer, Mr. Barefootin Robert Parker and the inimitable Wardell Quezerque pump up the proceedings with a drumming intro blaring horns, doubling up on the lead vocal and remorseless piano driving it all at a unforgiving pace.

Fine example of raw street-level New Orleans and we need not remind you how hard it is the find fine vinyl within the area after the tragic events caused by “Katrina” and the wise
