Not too long ago, there only needed to be a sniff of a 'Northern' classic in the background of a TV programme, or a comment by one of the characters and before the show had finished it would be noted on Soul Source,

Tonight there was a question on the already cringeworthy Mr and Mrs show loosely relating to the contestants love of  Northern Soul and a young lady demonstrating some dance moves according to the multiple choice answers,

I could be wrong but a couple of hours later I can't find reference to it on here,

 

Is this a sign of the times? Are we now resigned to the fact that NS is the new bingo??

Good point Pete,

Not so long back if I heard a snatch of northern on a programme or advert I would go a bit goosebumpy - it was always a natural reaction to hearing it  away from its natural 'home'.

 

Now... I cringe slightly, expecting the worse, or cynically wonder which marketing chump has stuck a pin in 'music genres to namedrop'. As you say it's a sign of the times - hopefully after all the fuss has died down and everybody's seen the film and it's run its natural course the goosebumps will come back.

OK OK!!! so the TV was still on the same channel I had watched Corrie on and I was too busy with my colouring in book to change channels,

 

However my point still stands and is valid I believe, it seems only like yesterday references were being made on soap operas or detective programmes and they were being mentioned on here before I could log on,

Anyway, I'm wondering if it's not been mentioned or seen by as many because it's in a quiz rather than a drama. I've just watched the northern soul bit online. Thought it was quite respectful and the dancing itself was done well.   Lacked the cringe factor of One Show, Paul O'Grady, Wigan's Ovation, Wayne Gibson on Crackerjack etc. 

 

In response to the original question, northern soul pops up so much nowadays in general media, it hardly seems worth commenting on here now unless a main feature.

Not seen the clip but question whether Northern Dancing can be done well in a TV studio? Can you enjoy a glass of Chardonnay in a public toilet? Should you laugh at stupid people making fools of themselves or take pity on them? Northern Soul was once an underground movement so shame on anyone for giving it unwarranted media coverage? Northern aficionados never courted publicity - it was the media writers and camera crews. Maybe it's time to tell the media to get lost and have nothing to do with them.

My point in my original post was maybe a bit vague, while we all know that since the mid 70s this thing called 'Northern soul' has been in the public domain, yet as recent as what seems like last year the merest mention by a soap character and it was all over places like soul source like a rash,

 

The other night wasn't just a quiz question, it was a full on demonstration of dance moves on a prime time celebrity show, presented in a manner as if it really is something everyone is totally familiar with,

 

The biggest surprise though, logging on here a couple of hours later expecting to read the fall out from it all and not a mention, anywhere, complimentary or otherwise, no big deal really just thought a little bit strange,
