Mexborough [who Remembers]

I remember that night well John .

I was in early doors , and David ( Bub ) had already had several drinks . He greeted me with his usual " get thi hand in thi pocket Burton " , and told me that he was on a mission to get heavily pissed ...... and he did

I have sympathy with you and Blink getting him on stage . I once took him home in a similar state ( not as bad as he was at The Athletic ) from The Londoner , and it was a battle for his dad and me to get him up the stairs  .......

I am unable to get to the next Empress , but will attempt to make the one after : what date is it ?

I remember with fondness John Hanley, Scotch (Tony Lannie) and last but not least Gordon Trow who was a really smashing lad, sadly taken far, far too early. Gordon was a really close friend of Nigel Peace (another good sort who introduced me to Gordon) who'd paid quite heavilly his HMP dues in the early 70's and got right back on the scene on his return. Haven't seen Nige for an age, we used to do Sam's on the Friday and poor Nige had to go straight from there to butchering meat in his uncles shop on the Saturday (thought of it still makes me shudder) prior to next out on the Sat evening, he like Gordon a non-stopper!

In purely Mexbrough terms I think the South Yorkshire Hotel (The South) is well worthy of a mention in recognition. It was from there in the mid 60's to early 70's that such unforgetable characters as Johno, Micie, Chock, Quinnie, Smack, Titch, Dungy, Whop, BIG Bladder, Marsh, Melv, Cherry, Genty, Eddie Scho...etc, were the very first from that town to make their way to the Twisted Wheel, Bin Lid, Broken Wheel and so forth.....early pioneers as it where!

Thanks for that MickD just had to get my point across that along with my own breed of Scots the people of Yorkshire are the salt of the earth as far as I am concerned and I will never waver from that opinion. I believe we have a common bond in the way we see life and know instinctively when someone is an all-round good person and treats them as such.

respect Fraser.

Cheers and best regards Fraser

My dearly departed mum was and always remained a Glaswegian, born and raised in the 'terrible' but fondly remebered tenaments of Mary Hill circa 1926-1947. She moved way... down south (Bovington Army Camp) to work in the NAFFI where she met my dad an East Riding of Yorkshire lad. I was most fortunate, as I feel many were who took to the NS scene to be brought up in household that held no bias or malice on background, colour or creed.

Went to "an evening of soull" at Mexbororough one friday night. can't remember who or what was going on, must have been c 1972, was with harry and met Al Jones, Juggy and Bob Parker all from Rotherham their, plus Janet and Mopsy missus, great night.

The jag we arrived in was borrowed, so another adventure went off.

Coggy, Jacko and Roomy were evil, but not as bad as the Derby lot!

I used to go over to Rotherham then to Wigan with Juggy, Alan. Bob, and Steve. and Linda Williams also but we are from Stockport.

Do you remember any of the lads from Thurcroft Steve Merry Tony Allen and I think Mopsy may have come from there to name a few?

That night will have been at The Civic Hall : the CH was one of my earliest promotions in the area

I usually just covered the outlay for / of the nights I held there ( the story of my promoting life  ) , but in respect of the DJs on the night , my recall is somewhat cloudy after 38 years . There were usually four DJs : two of them will have been yours truly and Snowy ( Bill Snow ) , but as for the other two , it could have been Bob Mellor , Dave " Snowy " Morgan , Al Taylor or Gary Cooper .

The chemist you mention , was Harry Dews .

It was always alleged - but never proven - that Harry " encouraged " the break ins of / to his dispensary , in order to claim off the insurance :hatsoff2: ..........

Allo just came across this feed am from West Melton used to go to Mexborough Disc a GoGo in the 60s John Wrona (may be misspelt) first Djayed there then Gary Cooper took over and a few of used to do a bit to help out ( Rob Gillis, Roy Dyson, Jeff Hope, Ian Hydes and myself ) i also used to do the warm up in the Miners Arms. Used to go to the Bin Lid and Attic nighters and a venue in Barnsley cant remember the name. Cant remember what artists appeared at the DAGG remember seeing Ben E King and the drifters at the Bin Lid. Edwin Starr. The Platters, and Billy Stewart at the Attic. When Gary took over he turned away from the mainly played Mod Culture and played mainly Motown, Atlantic, Stax Stateside etc even obscurities like Lou Johnsons Unsatisfied. Ray Pollards Drifter, Invitations ++++++ (from line dancing to the Fred Astaires) used to get raided quite often by the DDS ( Rex Garvin singalong used to be I Spy For The DDS ) Have been a Northern Soulie ever since KoKo

Bub wrecked on the mike telling everyone to get off their tits.

Accidentally breaking Paul Hamers newly bought Three Caps and telling him in years to come he think I did him a favour (alright I DID pay for it too!).

Locals having a punchup in front of the entrance and the doormen clearing a path so we could get in.

The pub at the top of the hill run by an old nighter goer who used to shove our tapes on whilst we stood around watching Vince Ayers hammering everyone for money playing pool and arm wrestling.

Anyway always a madhouse night preceded by a madhouse pub crawl.

Some of us lads used to come up from Norwich, mid 80s I think. We also went to similar nighters at Chesterfield (The Winding Wheel) and Mansfield (Swan Hotel) Still got some old tapes of that night with Rob Marriott, Keb, Guy and George Sharp DJing. Yes, great days indeed!!

Mark Chamberlin

Yes i remember Mark ,

drove there a few times , remember Cobby trying his spinning technic and ending up on his backside while dancing to Billy Hines , Ling Ting Tong , Mick Smith was spinning at the time . Great nighters there. Nearly hit a dog in the high street while driving home after the nighter .

Quite a long trip from Norwich .
