Was going through one of my Boxes this Morning and Pulled out my Johnny Hendley Single My Baby came from out of nowhere 45

and realised what a great and wonderful record it is for its Time, prompted by this searched out John and the weirdest single from my shelves (two great sides on this one)

First on Mutt & Jeff and the other on Tie Both released in 1967 and wondered  given the quality of both singles what happened to them, did they go on to record any other singles with name changes where they orignated etc.

 I bought my Original off John Manship  at the Cleethorpes Pier in the 70s unfortunately never had the chance of an original of the John & The Weirdest and made do with the 2nd issue hoping one would come my way but it never did unfortunately, it too is rare as you well know, Two Great Singles from One Great Artist

Like yourself Rick, I enjoy thumbing through the boxes when I’m in the mood, and what a great feeling it must be to hold a copy of Johnny Hendley or John and the Weirdest. Two great records way up high on my Wants List. Sorry, no info on the artists but I bracket them together with Johnny Hampton - only stumbled across the three of them in the 80’s and they all feature on a ‘best of the best’ mix-tape I did back in the 90’s.

Ed. Johnny Hendley, Johnny Hampton.  I can't separate them on how good I think they are. Just fantastic,  You do see Johnny Hampton for sale occasionally but I can't remember ever seeing a Johnny Hendley.

Apart from the actual joy of listening to the music those few words some up one of the other delights of collecting, I remember back when I first started my own journey into soul music and the missed heartbeat coming across a Blue Stax record which though common to find were for me as a fourteen year old new to the music with little money was true treasure. Seeing the label today still warms my heart and brings a smile.

I remember Richard Searling playing Johnny Hendley at Wigan. It was one of his monsters, till it got pressed.

 They didn't do themselves any favours calling themselves John and the Weirdest! Even though it's a totally brilliant doublesider!

Both sides, Richard Searling cover ups at Wigan!

He co-wrote both sides to begin with

He wasn't the lead singer of The Inspirations as claimed in the other topic either

the Inspirations 'thing' threw me right off. And plenty of writers didn't front as artists.

Johnny Hendley is very rare, I only had the one copy in the 80's and never had a chance at another. Swapped it with Butch for a new play by the Lucky Charms. The Lucky Charms went to the Vicar which I think he played a fair bit.

Edited. I was wrong on one of the matrix dates.

Johnny Hendley is 68962 (I thought the 9 was a 1). So it's November 1967.

John & the weirdest is 68365. Late September 1967.

“As for Johnny Hendley, his whereabouts are unknown although Joey is actively attempting to locate him. It was said at one time he was in a bad way in hospital, possibly a mental institution…hopefully this wasn’t the case and he can be found fit and well.”

Apparently but it's not set in stone until someone else proves it and as Andy says Joey can be hit and miss (as with a number of others)

That was set in stone at the time of Joey being asked, he didn’t know where he was. Of course that could have changed but it is extremely difficult tracing someone who is in the care or hospital facilities, they will not divulge any information due to data laws. One of the Servicemen was in a care home, I was in touch with him, but once he was moved they wouldn’t tell me anything nor Larry from the group.

Right first off I can't scan it in unfortunately but if my son was here (living in London) i'm sure he could do it when he is on a visit when allowed and he be able to do it for me, am doing Face Time with him this evening so i can run it past him,

So dug my original out of the box for Matrix information as requested (Vinyl)

On The M B C F O O N  Side the run out to end of label is only 5mm wide so writing is small on this side

 and 2 matrix numbers are   MJ-011   And    Triangle 68962

on my copy with Mutt & Jeff @ Top of  Record label  MJ-011 is @ about 11 o'clock

The Triangle 68962 is @ 7 0'clock

On the I'll Tell The World Side Run Out at end of record 17  mm wide And  the Two Matrix Numbers are MJ-17 and Triangle 62161-X  and is also a  Circle on the run out with what  looks like SP in the middle of it, but very difficult to make out it because it is not 100% legible even with my magnifying Glass 

on this side  With Mutt & Jeff At Top of Record Label matrix number Triangle 62161-X is between 1 & 2 O'clock 

MJ-17 is Between 5 & 6 O'clock

The Circle with what looks like SP in middle of it is @ 4 O'clock

All the Matrix numbers are NOT Stamped but Very Neatly Scribed in, Not Roughly Scratched on if that makes sense.

 So what What does the -X at the end  of the 62161-X matrix number  signify as the 68922 matrix number doesn't have one?  It may be something dead obvious to those more knowledgable than me 🤔 

Or Is it just as you have stated, Two Different years which is how i see it but seems a big gap between each side ? Is This Sort Of Thing Pretty Common Or Not?

Nothing intriguing, they were recorded/ mastered at different times. “I’ll tell the world” was previously released as an instrumental b side on a sunlovers 45. MBCFOONW exists I believe on a one sided 45, Joey obviously had no flip for it or pressed as an early promo to get it on the radio stations and then added the other side later.  Not the only time he has pressed a single sided 45.

I've edited my earlier post regarding matrix dates. Rick is right, Johnny Hendley is 68962 (I thought the 9 was a 1). So it's November 1967.

And as Chalky has just said above, MBCFOONW does exist on a one sided demo as that's what mine is.

still got my boot of johnny  Henley ,got

it from the record booth upstairs in the casino , labels were not even dry 😊

i loved it in the day , got offered a copy 

for £1200, out of my league, unfortunately.

If An Original Came Up For Sale These Days You Have To Wonder How Much It Would Fetch On Todays Market, Be It A One Sided Demo Or Issue, There Can't Be Many Of Them About Unless They Are Tucked Away In Collectors Boxes And Arn't Going Anywhere Any Time Soon 🙂

I had a response from Joey ... it was brief to say the least ... full text below

"Hi Joey ... I trust this finds you well ... Just a quick ask ... Many yext belowrs ago we spoke about Johnny and you said you hadn't seen him in a long time and thought he might have ended up in a psychiatric hospital ... I just wonder if your paths have crossed since we spoke or if you have heard anything about him .. Additionally any idea about Horace Pinkard or Walter Lewis Smith who were co-writers ... Before you recorded Johnny .. releasing his 45 in Nov/Dec 67 he was in a group called John & The Wierdest who had a 45 released in Sept 67 .. did you know anything about that ..I've attached some pictures ..Best wishes, Andy"
