Watched episode  2 now, still intrigued to see the 'down fall', but 8 episodes at this pace will be to tedious I fear.

watched episode and have decided to call it a day - utter twaddle.

every other scene has more holes than a sieve e.g. the prison visit:

In England and Wales a visiting order or 'VO' is a form completed by the prisoner and sent to the person/s he or she wishes to visit them in prison.

What is a vo prison?

For a visit to be arranged, the visitor must be in receipt of a Visiting Order (commonly known as a VO), which will have been sent in the post by the prisoner. A VO is a form which a prisoner must complete in order for a visit to take place.

The person seeking to visit must first receive a visiting order ‘VO’ which is completed by the prisoner and sent to them. This will state the name and address of those visiting, and a unique reference number to be used when booking the prison visit.

Watched Scrublands yesterday, only four episodes, Australian drama about a journalist doing a follow up story in a small outback town ,won't say anymore but really enjoyed it.

just watching the tunnel through to the end (so far?) of series 3 brilliant but she is one weirdo especially in the bedroom department well worth the watch and started to watch the vera not happy with her male partner that was new part but more to the plot

Kin, Dublin Gangster series, a Mike recommendation, is great. Some strong performances from an extremely well cast group of actors. I'll finish this tonight, BBC1 catch up.

Sorted.

I thought it was already on but it's coming soon apparently.

Not to worry where's the weekender Peter. 😃

I'm confused now - is Season 2 available to watch now? 🤔

The weekender was going to be on at my house, I might have to slim it down now, just an all niter. You could have come along to watch, share my chocolate stash with me and Ace, my Dobermann. He's mellowed a little now, and does share; a bit. 😋

It's available on line, Simon sent me a link but I haven't tried it yet. I might leave it till it comes to the BBC

This week the hold overs this is an excellent film really enjoyed it,

the end where we started (Jodie comer) for me failed to live up to what ai is supposed to be. Can’t fault the acting but there was just something missing.

Well having not watched any telly for nearly three years, due to my mentalist issues (😋), I have been royally spoilt.

The first episode of Crime was brilliant watching; for some reason I just couldn't get on with the second episode. I just found the ex police officer, trans character, a little hard to believe. Probably just me.

Then, I was once again enthralled by the two series of Fin, the Dublin based gangster story. A brilliant cast, some brilliant acting and a great story line. I hope they make a third series - I think the story line is open enough to make a third. Thanks for the heads up on these two. 🤗

I spent the last two nights scrolling through loads of stuff - I eventually gave up and took the beast out for a walk. That in itself is thrilling, anxiety inducing.  🫣

So, if any of the thread contributors have anything like the above two I would appreciate a tip or two. I may have to try Reacher tonight, that has had some recommendations on here.

Thanks everyone, keep on viewing and keep the tips coming.

Peter

(I was tempted to use my 99 tag name; but I'm not sure if I still am Peter99 or just Peter, it's been some years now - I think over 15) 🤔🤣

French films and programmes are extremely good - I think they're filmed and staged very differently. Well, I like them.

Has Mesrine been mentioned previously? Part one and two are very good viewing imo. I might watch them again this weekend if nothing else comes up. Watch out for his other films too - I'll post another up another time.

If you liked the Dublin gangsters, you would probably enjoy Love / Hate which has a similar theme, but is, I think, even better. 5 series on the iplayer.

Hi Peter My favourite French cop series is Braquo, there's 4 seasons altogether, if you don't mind your TV cops bending the rules when it suits in order to catch the bad guys, then this lot will be right up your street, violent, seedy drama, what's not to like. I watched them on DVD, I'm not 100% sure but they could be on Amazon Prime.

He's nearly as bad as you Simon. 🫣

Daniel Auteuil is probably my favourite French actor. He's made some brilliant movies, I'll post 36th Precinct this time. If you haven't seen it I'm happy to recommend it. Check out his other stuff too.

Le genre cinématographique français is where it's at - it's just very different to UK/American stuff. Trempez vos orteils dedans.

One of my favourite Daniel Auteuil films and one of his earliest ones is the classic Jean De Florette & the follow up to it Manon Des Sources. Gerard Depardieu stars in it as well.  Like you say a brilliant actor. I collect World Cinema and Daniel Auteuil features in quite a few of them.

Both wonderful films. A from around the same time, The Gory of my Father - little girl plays the piano and farts a lot?

Me too, My interest in World Cinema began purely by chance in the 80's coming home late one night and catching the French film Diva on the BBC, hooked from the start by the moody opening scenes and soundtrack. The above mentioned John De Floret cemented my passion.

A couple I'd recommend which I've mentioned previously would be the comedy La Famille Belier and the above mentioned Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu together in 36.

I'll look out for La Famille Belier. I thoroughly enjoyed 36 as well. Cinema Paradiso was my introduction into it.

Flattop Tony on soul source lent me a load of the more obscure titles like The Ordeal, Night of the Sunflowers, Timecrimes and the classic Vengeance trilogy.

World Cinema throws up a whole new experience in film viewing, as has been said my fellow SS'ers above. I think the French stuff is my favourite - it's just a really different experience. I don't have the right words or terminology, and I'm not as learnED as some of the other posters, but to me it's just more true to life, the characters aren't always glamorous, for example female actors are often sweaty, no perfect teeth, they're just real. That's not a great  example from me, but you know what I mean.

I've seen some amazing Belgian, Dutch, African stuff, along with my love of French produced stuff. I wonder whether World Cinema should have it's own thread - particularly as not everyone is a fan. Lots of people can't get past the subtitles. What does everyone else think?

Mike, it's your shout, what do you think - we could include Welsh stuff! 😋

African stuff,

I've only watched a couple of African films, very early in my world cinema journey I watched the brilliant The Gods Must be Crazy, the sequel which I can't remember the name of not quite as good, enjoyed Tsotsi.

I don't really like slapstick, but this a pee your pants film, a 'must watch'

The sequel is TGMBC   II  and is OK, but has too much to live up to

As anyone seen the advert for Fury V Usyk on Sky Sports , a lot of work went into making that one , just hope the fight is as good , February 17th box office .

This week Iron claw based on true story of a wrestling family in Texas in the 70’s surprisingly a very good film, it’s really about the family and the way the father rules the whole of the sons.

Just watched The Monuments Men with George Clooney & Matt Damon.  (On BBC2 last night but I found it on the iplayer).  It's about all the artefacts looted by the Nazis during WW2 & the Allied efforts to recover them. You might find it a bit slow to start with but stick with it - it's a good film - very interesting & well worth watching. 👍

I saw I Wanna Dance With Somebody last night and was very pleasantly surprised. It was more of tribute to Whitney Houston and focussed more on the music rather than the drugs, etc. The songs were great, especially the early stuff and the covers before she got a record deal. The background soundtrack includes some great songs from Stevie, Chaka and Luther. I saw that Rodney Jerkins was the man responsible in the opening credits so I knew it'd be good. It also featured a brief cameo of an actress playing Anita Baker. Superb performance from Stanley Tucci too as Clive Davis.

Yes it’s excellent ,went to the cinema to see it

I watched The Greatest Night In Pop at the weekend on Netflix.

It's a feature length documentary on the making of the "We are the world" single in 1985, from the writing of the song with Lionel Ritchie and Michael Jackson. Selling the idea to Quincy Jones as producer and then sorting out all the stars to sing on it and what part would suit each one of them.

I thoroughly enjoyed Bob Dylans contribution, Stevie Wonder was great with him.

Well Recommended. 5*****

I've been watching 'Masters of the Air' on Netflix, I'm hooked, but still not convinced. CGI'd beyond belief, as you would expect, there is a distinct lack of Flying Fortresses in the world.

Other than that, the language is hard to pick, and that’s a mix between what they are saying and how the actors are saying it, and the actual quality of the sound.

For example, a crew out under the wing very early morning, well they didn’t look cold to me, and the sound was just a single level, everybody heard each other no problem, you would be shouting at each other on a runway, and noise would likely drop off quickly, didn’t seem real to me.

The accents, I don't know, some of the dialogue just goes over my head, as if they are mumbling their words, I guess they would of sounded like they were from outer space to Brits, but it's still...MMmmmmrrrr..

As for the plot, yep, it's all there in the history books, the wings expolits over Germany and Europe, but did US servicemen fight with British crews in the pub, must have happened I guess, but given they were all fighting the Germans, it seemed a bit forced. As for any reference to any other nationallities involved in WW2, other than the enemy, and bit part down the pub for some unlkely RAF blokes, the US 100th Bomber group seemed to have done everything in WW2!

All in all, not as good as it's predecessors, 'Band of Brothers' 'Pacific' and 'Private Ryan', this series althoiught good, lacks a realness, maybe thats the CGI in it, but I'm now glued to weekly Friday night episodes...

Might go see 'The Zone of Interest' at the Cinema, see what thats like.

Yes, it was brilliant. I got quite sentimental watching it. Al Jarreau singing Day O, as a tribute to Harry Belafonte, and everyone joining in was hilarious.

Well, I've binge watched Fin - season one and two, and all five seasons of Love/Hate; both very excellent Irish produced gangster/thriller shows.

I've been scrolling and mincing about looking for my next binge watch, I did Grieselda, on Netflix, which was ok. But.

So, any recommendations from the watchers on here?

Thanks Peter
