Having just got a copy of the David Ruffin's LP, In My Stride, got me thinking - what are the good LP's around these days worth getting ?

What I mean by "worth getting" is this...... the "good" new artist CD's coming out these days, do seem to get a good amount of air play on the specialist stations, but LP's from artists like The Streetpeople, Dells, Spinners etc (i.e. late 1960's to late 1980's) do throw out some great dance floor tracks as well, but getting the info as to "what LP" holds the right tracks, is something of a hit and miss affair.

Looking at the prices of singles these days, the LP's seem to be a lot less and I'm sure a reasonable proportion of these singles around are available on LP to.

So, any suggestions out there on your top LP's to lookout for, I for one don't mind playing a LP tracks on the "wheels of steel".......

Righteous Brothers - Souled Out. Includes up to you and some great mid-tempo tracks.

Grier's version of Tenement is a great track and the album also has a few good ballads - Hasn't Roosevelt Grier also got an ep featuring tenement ?

What about the various tracks on The New Sound lp on Turbo? Better version of Robert Tanner's "Sweet Memories", "Don't Take Your Love From Me" etc.

Hello Joe: Xmas bought two of my alltime top wants: the Boz Scaggs lp on Atlantic, with a gatefold sleeve containing magical late 60s photos of Eddie Hinton, Jimmy Johnson, Marlin Greene, Roger Hawkins etc. when they were young and hip, and, amazingly, a copy of Queen and Bowie's mighty "Under Pressure".

A wise man once said that if you don't like Under Pressure you don't like music, and I'm inclined to agree with him.

As for new year: wish Sheridans was within easy reach of the smoke... Oh well. See you soon Mr Orton. Keep defacing library books, but keep Kenneth away from the glue and scissors.

Betty Harris - I Don't Wanna Hear It from the UK Action Soul Perfection LP - not cheap exactly but not rare either

Donald Byrd - In Love With Love - Thank You For F U M L LP - nice uptempo modern dance track with the usual sublime trumpet from DB - not sure it's him singing tho.

100 Proof Aged In Soul - Backtrack written by General Johnson from the Somebody's Been Sleepin' LP. Great Greg Perry production with Joe Stubbs on vocals. Backing seems to be mostly Smacking drums, bass & some fuzzy type guitar + tight backing vocals. LP is great overall with another Joe Stubbs track taking the ballad & rapping honours with Aint That Lovin' You, a track that has to be heard to be believed, great stuff.

I'm another big LP fan. They have to be the best music media available. Aethestically, they certainly win.

j.james & vagabonds,album with aint love good is awsome! came out in us on acto me think`s different from uk pye issue? but look out for marble arch uk release as it as two other tracks one called,i do me thinks?,should be cheapish 10-15 pounds,if anybody as one for sale let me know?,i do is my fave by this well known british band. soulfully-your`s (Backdoor 100 club)

Lp,s are great way of getting tracks that are hard to find on a single, and also good value for your money as very few collect Lps. Compilations are your best bet, and here are a few, any albun on the Kent label are good. There were a hundred albums on Kent before they went onto Cds also may I suggest the following which could be a bit harder to find "Marv-V-Lus Sounds of R&B and Soul Music" President PTL 1002 (1968) "Soul Sixteen" Stateside SL10186 (1966) "An Album Full of Soul" Stateside SL10172 (1966) "Soul 66 Sue ILP934 (1966)

The best way of finding Lp,s in my opion is through Record Collector magazine, which comes out the last Friday of each month. A good web site for American Lps is Recordsbymail.com.

Theres a seven inch jukebox LP with this on, I think theres three tracks each side, I got mine off Pete Smith. Can't remember which other tracks off the LP are on it. Not seen a proper EP as such.

I have this but haven't played it for years, will have to drag it out. I bought it when the track "One Mans Leftovers" was played in the very early days of Wigan. I also found that LPs were a great way to get big sounds for a decent price. Things like Herb Ward On the "Funky Bottom Congregation" album and Willie Kendricks on "A Little Bit Of Soul"

When I dj I carry some LP's... Trouble is if you DJ with them the sound quality is a lot quieter than 45's... so don't oftern play them..

Know what you mean with the volume/quality difference. I usually start of the night with the 'Gain' set central to zero. That's the twisty knob usually just above the channels on the mixer.

When I play an album track, just crank the 'Gain' up to 3/4. You can usually gauge where it will be volume wise on the headphones and adjust as required before cueing-in.

Couple of albums I play a lot.

Chi-Lites - A Lonely Man - Brunswick. A Mid-70's affair, with 'Living In The Footsteps Of Another Man', 'Being In Love' and my personal fave 'Inner City Blues (Makes Me Wanna Holler)', great cover of the Marvin Gaye track, and far superior to the Impressions version on Curtom of around the same time. Just don't get the opportunity to play it much, as it's such a distinctive sound and hard to drop into a set. £10-£20 depending on where you see it.

Randy Brown - Intimately - Parachute. I bought this for 'I Was Blessed The Day I Found You' and was immediately struck by 'I'm Here', a fantastic mid-tempo dancer. Also another guddun on it is 'You Made Me Happy', a reasonable up-tempo dancer. Cheap as chips too, cost me $4.99!

Metros - The Sweetest One - RCA. Had to get this for possibly one of the greatest Group Soul recordings ever - 'I'll Never Forget You'. I love the O'Jays version to bits, but there's just something about this that blows me away. Also 'Since I Found My Baby' and 'Time Changes Things'. Steadily climbing in price, probably near £75-£100.

Play "The Stars" from the Horace single at 33 and up your pitch control slightly and it's a ringer for Walter Jackson!

Yes there is. My Tempests LP is a US mono copy. Unfortunately a lot harder to find than the stereo copies though.

Just about any kent release , although the early compilations by soul bowl were worth their cost many times over,  one release for dancerx only has so many tunes with five figure price tags,  it was booted in the eighties and the resulting ep had five tunes with a total value of twenty odd grand

Or pick a favourite male or female artist and acquaint yourself with the full catalogue of say garland green, little richard, betty swann or do the label complete catalogue , a mate recommended smash
