Only do evenings now, and just the odd nighter's, as I can't handle them any more. Used to have all dayer's at Llandudno......but not any more, and used to have a good day there.

Overall, lots of quality soul nights and nighters to choose from (dependant on your personal view of quality) so difficult for me to seperate them on anything other than a personal preference of liking the feeling of being at a nighter.

There are some local 'small' dos that dont get much mention - only maybe the regulars - and they have more atmosphere, good dif. selection of music, to please all and as I do like to have a laugh too, they are not as serious as some dos are, which can get a bit boring in my book, i.e. Lightwater, SoS., Chalfont

Plenty of niters offering good if not excellent dj set's, so probably best to check out the dj line up first to ensure musically your in for a good nite/niter

I agree, i wish that there were more mini-niters, 9-3. I used to love the Dome. You could turn up, spend a couple of hours in the pub next door, then up to the niter about 11. By 3 it was still buzzing and everyone left on a high. It was just the right length (as my missus says ).Niters that go on until 7 usually just seem to die a slow death.

lighten up Dave, it was a bit of fun with Jo and a shameless plug 2 months away, but if you read the bottom of my post i said i dont mind what i prefer as i like nights and nighters.

I love nighters but I have to watch how I go these days so maybe staying up all night isn't the best idea anymore. Soul nights are good too as they're more intimate and the more times you go the more familiar people become and you can end up making some good mates locally.

So I'd say soul nights just edge it for me.

I've thought a lot about this subject. I used to run a rare soul night [8pm-2am] on a Saturday night. The problems were, 1. some of the people wouldn't get there till 10pm-11pm, because of the distance they were travelling. 2. If there was a nighter on the same night, most punters would shoot off half way through the evening, to go to the nighter, and 3. Sometimes if it was a busy Saturday nobody would come at all.

Then I read a post on here asking the same question, soul night or nighter. And was amazed that the majority said deffo nighter....

So I now run a rare soul nighter, and have it on a Friday, Why?, you get two days to recover.

I have tasted the future, and so far so good.

I personally would prefer allnighters that started at midnight or 1 am like they used and to do a warm up do local to the all-nighter first. All-nighters are starting too early these days not only killing off local soul nights but many people treat the all-nighters as a soul night by going early and heading home at 3 or 4 in the morning and therefore the all-nighter slowly goes down hill as the place empties and the atmosphere can be and usually is lost.

When I go to a soul night, I'm always left wanting more.

Just about learned how to pace myself thru an allnighter, and enjoy the buzz of looking through the sales boxes and chatting to people....then leaving them mid-conversation when I hear something I've just got to dance to!

Bring back the midnite start! Nowt like the atmosphere of a 'niter if its buzzin, and the 12 o clock start makes it easier for everyone to get there on time! (Stop pushing at the back!, those were the days!)

Spot On! on all levels IMHO.....................Can only speak from my recent experience but for me Lowton and the aformentioned Mr Jones Bury gig, push the musical boundaries a little more than your average soul neet and so are a worthy of a visit for those who like to be in bed at a reasonable time. As a bonus every so often they metamorphasise into an All Nighter for special occasions just to keep everyone happy.

The choice is there.....

my take on this is living in skegness we have to travel to hear music that is more upfront than can hear locally.if this means 7 hour round trip to soul nites at say the greatstone or 3 greyhounds then it must be done. was over the moon when thorne started again because at under 2 hours away feels local, the same can be said of the britt. would'nt travel to a soul night that i thought had nothing to offer musically. will do soul nites when dj's guesting that i know will put together great sets of music.always try & support certain dj's who i've got the upmost respect for, the ripolles bros, arther fenn,steve green, chic, the greatstone collective spring to mind.all play toons they believe in & play with a passion.but as for normal soul nites, playing same old,same old not for me.some great niters to go to at the moment .seems to me the niter crowd i meet at say, middleton, wilton, lifeline ect are not the same crowd you see at soul nites, & by the same token i dont seem to see many of the people i know who do soul nites at niters. its all down to what sort of music you need to hear.

I am firmly in the soul night camp have not done a full all nighter since about 1979, enjoy the weekenders as well cleethorpes is my favourite. i do not think i could physically do an all nighter anymore and to be honest the 6 or 7 hours at a night is perfect for me, normally back at home in bed for 3 am so dont feel to bad on sat or sunday.

i think the idea for putting nighters back to the 12 till 8 or 1 till 8 sounds like a good idea then local nights would benefit as they would be looked upon as a warm up's may make a difference to attendances,

From a DJ perspective i get asked and choose to do far more Soul nights 8 till 2's rather than the allnighter situation, mainly down to my work/day job situation that i pretty much have to plan my Soul life around work rather than the other way round, a good allnighter is still a buzz to do from time to time but just now and again, makes me a bit of a part timer i know but it's how it is.

Musically some early sessions can match most allnighters in terms of being more upfront playing a good mix of tunes, i guess it's down to the DJ's booked and if the music policy is open rather than limited to one style or era, 'across the board' get's used a lot these days on the flyers and if this can be accepted and applied it has to be the best possible format, slightly off the topic sorry.......Soul nights for me no question.....allnighters take days to recover from....lol

now however 31 years later,find need lot longer recovery time ,more responsibilities now etc.

also find it hard explaining to child why his 50year old dad is going out all night,should be me questioning him what he s doing ,not the other way round

I too am getting on a bit, I have an extremely responsible job & a seven year old boy. Also do not have any Nighters on my doorstep, where ever I go when in the UK, I am travelling. Thing is if you are passionate about the 'scene' you can get around these things with a little planning..............its about dedication, its what seperates us from the rest of the adult world.........how many sugars in ya cocoa matey.

BTW when I was a nipper it took me most of the week to recover...........not much has changed either. If you live the life you get it sorted dont you. My wife just lets me get on with it now pretty much, she knows I would be unbearable if I couldnt at least go to the 100 Club & usually at least one other Allnighter a month & compared with many Im a part timer !!!. We do go to a local soul night together one weekend too, tho.

I prefer local nights usually the 7.30 - 12.45/1.00 ones and one club does it till 2.00 which is ok to me. but i could go to the odd all nighter but need to sleep before hand or i get to 2.00 and be sleepy. plus at your local nights you might see people you know and all your friends who attend

Does not matter where i go ,it always ends up a nighter anyway..If we are not heading off to a allnighter ,everyone ends up in my kitchen.and that litrally is every weekend .take last sat night,only went local to the boat,but the last guest to leave my house ,was at 11am sunday morning you know who you are..sometimes i enjoy playing records and chatting in my kitchen,better than going to a nighter.cuts out all the travelling, and cost and you get to pick your own company,and tunes..thats not to say i don,t like going to nighters,just getting a little more picky on which ones to attend..
