Could any members tell me how to spot an original Billy Arnell - Tough Girl from the unofficial Boot with the same label ( other than they will probably look brand new ) , many thanks.

Both labels on the boot say 1001-A where as on the original side 2 is 1001-B also see position of word inst/instrumental. Real one top

I genuinely hadn't spotted that.

I've never heard the other track they recorded, the intended flip side, "Little Baby". They dropped it last minute in favour of the instrumental. Probably worked out best for the Northern Soul world. They were billed as "Little Willie & the Sparkles", with 17 year old Billy Smith doing the vocal.

I vaguely recall a copy in a Manship auction in the last year or two, but don’t remember the final value it went for. A copy was put in Soul-Source Sales a few years ago priced at £1,750. I reckon it’s a 2K record in excellent condition these days.

Yes as you probably know, when it first got played in the Wigan Casino era, it was the instrumental that was the big sound!💫

Mick Bolan RIP discovered it when he was at Past & Present Records in Watford. He told me he had an acetate cut of it & that was what got played at Wigan. I have that acetate.

The copy on Tim's auction sounds "well used". This may hold back the finishing amount. So, I think it'll give a ballpark current value but I'd expect a less "well used" copy to fetch more.

Manship auction June 2022 realised £2,600. Another thread on Soul Source re this. Awesome pair of tunes - one of the best double-siders around.

I can confirm that a copy was bought for £3k earlier this year (and, no, not by myself).

Interesting that Ady. I wonder if that's where Sam had his original from he was playing out at St Ives in early 77 bearing in mind Gloria Jones played St Ives in 76 and MB was there with her.....always up for a theory me.😉

Most likely Martyn. MB had sold it because it wasn't in his collection that I bought from him. I asked where it was, sadly I can't remember who he said he sold it to. That's how the information regarding the acetate came out, in that conversation.

I think Stef orlinski, of Biddulph had MB's copy, not sure who he sold it on to.

Somebody's got trapped in the auction process - thought they'd bid high to prevent getting sniped at the death, probably not realising - That their top bid became the actual high bid amount the moment they clicked confirm ( maybe not but seen it happen so many times) These auctions don't operate like Ebay.

Somebody's not double checked before submitting their bid - current high bid £100,100 !!!!!!!

Billy glitch has been sorted. I’ll post all auction prices as soon as I get them.  

I'm pretty sure that Billy Arnell finished up at £2,500.00

the guy furthest right would have been well surprised! Sparkles 1963 ( pre Tough Girl)
