Towanda Barnes "You Dont NMean It" springs to mind

Cheers Paul

Just played

James Fountain - Seven Day Lover

Was there ever a better record that crossed the gap between funk & northern?

I had the Family Tree record from Neil Rushton C.1977, but foolishly sold it in 1989. Would dearly love to get one back! Any ideas on cost/availability? I know it was included on a Funk compilation CD, and found it had sold on 12" (with SKYE on the flip), on ebay not long ago...

P.S. Don't think Cyrus mentioned "Northern funk" did he folks? I thought he wanted to check out some genuine FUNKY tunes.

An all time fave of mine is - The Crow - Your autumn of tomorrow - Inner ear. thumbsup.gif

I played it at the 100 Club a couple of years ago. Raised a few eye brows but the dancers kept on stomping away thumbsup.gif

Out of interest where did you hear Wrighty play it?

Great record anyway :D

By no means a fan of funkier tunes.

Does the Temptations - Treat her like a lady, count? Or, Cloud 9?

I spent one of the worst bank holidays ever at a Deep Funk alldayer. The guys I was with were having a large time. I ended up counting the number of beer mats on the tables. You dont see beer mats in london clubs very often.

How about the very popular "Love Addict" by Honey + The Bees.

I love ,OnlyA Fool:Loleatta Holloway from her debut album on Aware circa 1971

I was surprised you'd heard him play it, was chatting to Wrighty this morning about the last time he DJed in the UK outside of the Essex soul scene and Soul Revolution. Was at least a year ago, and probably only once in 2 years. He's very much the 'internatinal soul playboy' these days. Although not so much of the 'playboy' anymore, thinking about it :D

Saturday's looking good. Seems to be alot of folk coming along. Should be a good party :P

Fab moonlighters borderline funk russ? Next we'll have James saying Ree Flores is really a funk tune

The Moonlighters track reminds me of another one I associate with that time.

Kenard - What did you gain by that.

Bobby Porter "Ive been working " slighty funky , and lots of grit

or The Goodies "The Funky Gibbon" thats a floor packer!!

:thumbsup:whistling.gif

About as clever and relevant as The Goodies' "Black Pudding Bertha" - so go whistle THAT!

("..she's the queen of Northern Soul..." )

Can somebody please post up a soundclip of Lynn Collins' "Think (About It)" - cheers!

Brenda George- I cant stand it I cant take no More

James Brown- Funky Drummer

Hi Cyrus,

How's the travelling over to Loughborough going, I assume you started that job already ? Hope all's well.

Here's a few funky contributions from me :

Gas ton - Everywhere a funk

LJ Johnson - Aint no valves on your love (More soul than funk but still great)

High Fashion - Pump on the pipe

Trilark - L oven ever looked better

Every one of them a classic, check them, they all exist.

All the best, Martin

Hello to all.

I understand "favorite FUNKY songs" (not instrumental). Here's a few favourites during years:

-Cleveland Eaton "Funky Funky Music" (Miracle)

-O'Jays "Get On Out & Party" (PIR)

-Herbie Hanckok "Just Keep On Doing" (CBS)

-Richard Tee "Back Door Man" (Tapan-Zee)

-People's Choice "You Ought To Be Dancing" (Casablanca)

-Bunny Sigler "Jingle Bells" (PIR)

-Billy Paul "When Its Your Time To Go" (PIR)

-George Duke "I Am For Real" (Epic)

-Jimmy Castor Bunch "Potential" (Atco)

-Ramsey Lewis "Fish Bite"

Cheers and Soul Food

well not sure how funky some are but i love

Jimmie bo Horne - Don't Worry About it and

First Choice - Ain't No Love

Chain Reaction - Search For Tomorrow (Blue Wave)

Pure Funk - Nothing Left Is Real (Planet Earth)

Standing Room Only - Sacrifice (Lamar)

Rokk - Patience (Tollie)

Brief Encounter - Get A Good feeling (Capitol) Nice to pick this up for $7 at the same time some were happily shedding $$$ on it

Fruit - Say it (Cypress)

Mighty Ryeders - Let There Be Peace (Sun-glo)

...the list goes on and on

You can't really beat Edwin Starr 'Running Back and Forth'. Everyone on both sides of the fence seems to love this one.

I think the 3 records I started off my funk set with in Malm¶ at the April edition of Club Function the weekend before last could easily be viewed as straight up soul or straight up funk:

21st Generations - I need love (Tri-City)
The Valdons - All day long (Twin City Movement)
The Perfections - No man can love you (like I can) (Rock'n)

Anyone know anything about the last one? I've come up totally dry. For those curious, setlists for all 3 of my sets (70s soul, 60s soul, funk) can be found here:

It's a nice record alright, but it sho' ain't funky!

Forgot about Morning, Noon & Night - "Bite Your Granny" (12" mix) - Another one of my faves!

also Cameo "Rigor Mortis", (a bit mainstream I know, but I still play 'em at home!)

...Agreed. In fact, I'm not really seeing or hearing too many truly funky records posted up here yet, but here's a few that really do qualify:

CALVIN ARNOLD - THINK I BETTER REST (SONDAY)

FREDDIE AND HENCHI - FUNKY TO THE BONE (REPRISE)

LITTLE BEAVER - FUNKADELIC SOUND (CAT)

THE BAR KAYS - HOLY GHOST (STAX)

ALL THE PEOPLE - CRAMP YOUR STYLE (BLUE CANDLE)

CLARENCE REID - MASTERPIECE (ALSTON)

OHIO PLAYERS - FIRE (MERCURY)

PARLIAMENT - I CALL MY BABY PUSSYCAT (INVICTUS)

WILLE HUTCH - IF YOU AIN'T GOT NO MONEY (MOTOWN)

WILSON PICKETT - DON'T KNOCK MY LOVE (ATLANTIC)

CAMEO - TALKIN OUT THE SIDE OF YOUR NECK (CASABLANCA)

IKE AND TINA TURNER - BOLD SOUL SISTER (BLUE THUMB)

SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE - THANK YOU FALETTIN ME BE MICE ELF AGIN (EPIC)

...all treasured items in this house, and that's without any instrumentals or James Brown productions!

Think I better rest!

TONE

Tell Everybody - herbie hancock -

2mins of 7 from a funky Herbie Hancock

It's a nice record alright, but it sho' ain't funky! unsure.gif

Yeah but "Time" on t'other side could just about be classed as Funky - Soul... n'est pas?

Fabulous Moonlighters is great funky soul.

Alcon Shades on Blue Rock along the same lines, and the flip of Eddie Ray on Prix.

I'll call you back later - gloria barnes - maple

I think this got it all, especially heavy emphasis on the bassline. She sounds a bit like Towanda Barnes.....

Posted this a couple of days ago in another thread. Fantastic!

Get It Right - soul president - big mack

Pattie Ward - Get Off My Stuff (Road Records)

...bought this litte funky/crossover mix from 1968 for the other side (Girls) You Have to Wait For Love...but it`s always good to give the b-side a chance. Brilliant tune (sorry no soundfile)
