It's Tats that's the real Forest Red so we thought we'd make a day of it... should they get through! ... And more especially as they're (just about) the only local side (to me) that's not just been relegated. Sean Link to comment

Guest Niki
Dearest groovy MENTAL Soul people, It's MonuMENTAL Soul time again. London's premier Modern Soul & Crossover night returns this Saturday 26th May for our annual Whitsun Bank Holiday get together for Mole's birthday. We are very pleased to welcome along our guest for the evening Mr. Sean Hampsey making his MonuMENTAL debut. A regular at such esteemed rare soul events as The Orwell and Soul Essence weekender, Sean is finally making the looooong trip down south to grace the MonuMENTAL wheels of steel. Rumour has it that there is an unreleased Bobby Womack tune lurking in the Hampsey box waiting to get a spin on Saturday.... I know there are a lot of MENTAL regulars looking forward to seeing and hearing Sean on a very rare London appearance. We have to give a massive thanks to Neil "Nelly" Forbes for filling in for me in February and March - great sets and great crowds at both events. Neil will be joining the roster of regular jocks and will back in the very near future. It's back to business as usual on Saturday... you know how it goes... your resident MENTAL DJs are Gareth "Girth Devon" Donovan, Mole and me, Niki Golding. As always spinning a selection of funky floor-fillers, modern soul anthems, lesser known 60s & 70s, ultra rare crossover and a smattering of new SOUL releases.... something for EVERYONE! The very best in QUALITY SOUL old and new. A night of great soul music and great company at a great venue, with a big wooden floor made for dancing and our legendary pub priced beer and draught bitter. See you on Saturday Niki, Girth & Mole xx www.monumentalsoul.co.uk www.myspace.com/monumentalsoul Monumental Soul @ The Britannia 20 Monument Street London EC3R 8AJ London's premier Modern Soul & Crossover night Doors: 8.30pm to 2am Tax: seven quid The Britannia is by The Monument - just a 30 second stroll down the hill from Monument Tube station (District & Circle Lines, and foot tunnel to Northern & Central Lines), walking distance to Fenchurch Street, Cannon Street, London Bridge (just over the river) and Liverpool Street Rail stations. Guest TONY ROUNCE
...It was a very good night in every respect, despite a slightly-lower-than-usual 'body count'. My hat's off to brother Hampsey for 'keeping it populist' and for dropping an excellent balance of the affordable and the relatively unobtainable. IMO more DJ's should be taking a leaf out of Sean's book and playing 'common' tunes like Tyrone Davis' "Turn Back The Hands Of Time" and Barbara Lynn's "You're Losing Me" as oldies, rather than judging a record's dancefloor worth on its price in a Record Guide. And the quality of Niki's first post-natal set was matched only by the obvious joy she was getting from finding herself of the DJ side of a set of turntables for the first time in a while. There were plenty of places that people could have been last night, but those who weren't at MonuMENTAL did their ears a great disservice. Well done to all! Link to comment
Bully Boy
Had A GREAT GREAT Night Have to Echo Tony's Sentiments about the whole evening. In the words of the MJ Wade tune, We Had A Ball. Many Thanks has to go to Sean Hampsey and Tats, we had such a great laugh from start to finish. Also I must give Ivor Jones a Big THANK YOU! Ivor and his escort Taxi Service picked us up and also delivered us home via the Brick Lane Beigel shop. A MASSIVE THANKS for that Ivor, hopefully will be able to pay you back via the Guinness pump at Cleethorpes in a fortnight mate. But really enjoyed the Night, top Venue, top Music, top People. All I wanted for breakfast was "a bowl of Frosties" , and I must stop drinking the Britvic's. "Lock up your Mothers" = Bully's Ere! TOPS Link to comment

Always like to drop a wide range of tunes... from 4 quid... to 3 or 4 figures... Helps to maintain the quality control that's so important... yet often overlooked. Of course, as you well know, if the crowd is 'right' they'll appreciate that approach much more than someone just banging on the current 'big ticket' items... in some pre-programmed (hot box??) fashion. Glad to say that, though we're separated by some 150 odd miles, the Monumental clientele were most definately my kinda people. Thoroughly wonderful venue with an equally wonderful crowd (after all... where else in London would you get a full dancefloor to Ann Peebles 'Playhouse'?) Too many people to name and thank... but particular thanks to Ivor Jones for being an absolute diamond in going miles out of his way to get me and the boys there and back to the digs... in one piece. The guy is just pure class. Will type and post a playlist as soon as I've recovered! I will be back. Sean Link to comment

Thanks to Niki,Gareth,Neil,Mark and Mole etc for the usual Southern Hospitality. +Big shout for Ivor who is always concerned about my bagel dietary requirements. Great to see Binsy,Bob and Sue. Ady Cr, and much TO RARE outing from lorraine/laura Dearlove. Top tune for me was the Ann Peebles classic, haven't heard that out for 20 years, Sean is the master of soulful suprises.
