thank you everyone who made the effort to attend our 2nd dkof night your support and encouragement is really appreciated.

As for the music, I'm still trying to get my head round what I heard last night there are not enough superlatives to describe dean and alan's sets.....awesome night.

Next night Aug 3 - Thorley, Hennigan and Warren Wint.

Good work guys.........Nice crowd of friendly people and brilliant quality music.........what more could anyone want. :good:

Kitch doesn't play out often enough and this was certainly a night not to miss a blinding set from start to finish........record of the night for me was the Roy Roberts that Kitch played..........Awesome. :P

Looking forward to the next one on August 3rd with Guy Hennigan and Dave Thorley already

Thoroughly enjoyed the second DKOF .. top music from start to finish with a nice little buzz about the place. It was great to see so many familiar faces down there, Kev and Dean from the attic, Warren from Boogaloo, Geoff and Mike, aswell as all the Local guys. Thanks for your support ... appreciated... hope it was worth the journey :P

Another top night gents, and one that some might regret missing when word gets out just how good last night really was.

Great atmosphere and a really good crowd there to appreciate the music which was, in my opinion, top notch. Kitch and Dean were both sensational and I think those that travelled some distance, and there were a few, would have found their journeys worthwhile. It was also nice to see the dancers really showing their appreciation of what was being played.

Can't wait for the next one, although it's going to be a hard act to follow.

Went to the dkof night at the infamous DOG IN A DOUBLET near Peterborough...

We had a top night with good sets played by all the dj's.....these type of nights are just the thing for people with musically enquiring minds. Paul Donnelly played a couple of nice tracks ... Ralph soul Jackson and a good cheapy by the Montclairs... a good set indeed.

The highlight had to be though Dean and Kitch.... what awsome tunes my man Kitch has got... Roy Roberts, Mello Souls (good buy for $5) The Parliaments and ,of course, Robert Tanner. He was followed by Dean who always amazes me with so much stuff that l don't know and wonder why l don't.......

Good crowd there both local and from further afield.. nice to see me old pal FRANK GIACOBBE from derby there (nice sandals frank :P )

See you at Lifeline ........

Merged the two topics :P

You hit the nail on the head there Terry, absolutely blinding night, pounding 60's soul just the way i like it, Kitch was second to none, and Dean never fails to impress that Robert Walker c/up just gets better and better.

Well done to all involved but why does it have to be a differnt kettle of fish? musicly all venues should be like this playing good danceble soul music, will be along again thats for sure

Apologies for length of this review, just had to do it while my memory (such as it is these days) was fresh.

I'd been told about the night called a Different Kettle Of Fish, by one its organisers Mick Donnelly, a friend of mine who is on the Carms R&B group on Yahoo. He told me the idea was to let DJs play what they liked with an emphasis on the lesser played material. That sounded pretty good to me, I love the classics, but don't want an evening of 100mph Wigan Casino NS top 100 stompers. I like a nice mix.

While we were at the Blue Skies all dayer Mike Humphries and I had a discussion on going up to Peterborough to see what DKOF was like. We agreed to go up to the next one, all things being equal.

I left my home at 6pm to drive up to meet Mike at his office in Southgate. After a quick drink in a pub in Cockfosters for Mike to say farewell to a couple of colleagues leaving his office we headed for Mike's home. There I had the pleasure of meeting his wife and daughter, while he changed clothes.

Then it was back into his posh motor and up the A1M towards Peterborough. I'd bought my satnav along, just in case we got lost after leaving the A1M. And the moral of the story is trust the lady on the satnav. We thought we'd gone wrong, despite the device telling us otherwise. After double backing on ourselves we followed her original instructions and arrived at the pub, quaintly named the Dog In A Doublet.

As we parked we could hear soul sounds emanating from the pub, we were really up for it.

Paid our entrance fee to Mick Donnelly's other half Lucy, and we went in. Immediately Mike met a lady he knew, we dropped off our bags, and after a much needed visit to the Gents, it was time for a drink. Mike had a beer, and I stuck to my usual, Coca Cola. I wish there were more inspiring soft drinks, but I seem to stick to the same thing, apart from an occasional adventurous choice of a J2O or a lime and soda.

I lost track of which DJ played what, hopefully they will post playlists on here. Mick's brother Paul was on the decks when we arrived, or at least I think he was.

I thoroughly enjoyed the music policy, just good Northern (and the occasional Modern) Soul. I would say that at least 50% of the sounds were not known to me. Mike was in the same boat, so it isn't just my ignorance.

The room the night is held isn't large but fine for the numbers there, and there was quite a good crowd. I noticed there were real ale pumps behind the bar, something rare at a soul night I've found.

It was very nice to see Gill again and meet her daughter Becky. Gill, you are a lovely, kind lady. Also good to see Warren again, although I couldn't afford Clydie King or Corey Blake, lol.

I did wonder if I would dance, wondered if I'd know anything played, but of course there were quite a few I knew, so eventually got out there. Good dance floor.

As usual when I try to recall the night's music my mind is blank, I do remember dancing to Not The Marrying Kind (Kenny Lewis); We Can Make It (Mellow Souls), these two knackered me. Perhaps Mike H can refresh my memory.

The last DJ (sorry, can't remember who it was) played some nice mid tempo tracks, starting with Clyde McPhatter's Lonely People Can't Afford To Cry, brought back great memories of Scenesville. He also played a seventies set, not particularly unusual tracks, but personal favourites of mine: Case Of Too Much Love Making (Gloria Scott); Making My Daydreams Real (We The People); Rode By The Place (David Ruffin); What Am I Gonna Do (Gloria Scott); and That's No Way To Treat A Girl (Hesitations).

He ended his set and the evening with two beat ballads; Clydie King's Missin' My Baby and a male vocal track, title and artiste elude me as I write, but really nice.

And that was it, time to jump into Mike's car and wend our way back to London, where Mike dropped me off by my car.

A really good evening. Thanks go to Mike for giving me a lift and also his company, much nicer on a long journey to have a like minded companion, hope he enjoyed my CDs. Also a thanks to the promoters and the DJs, you gave me an evening that I thoroughly enjoyed. I can't recommend this evening enough to anyone who likes good Northern Soul. I think DKOF has a bright future.

Big thanks to Mick and Paul: not only for putting the event on, and so much effort in getting the message out there (will these DKoF CDs be the next generation of NS collectables?), but also for the genuine friendly welcome.

A refreshingly very uplifting enjoyable night. Room big enough to hold an atmospheric group (very appreciative group on the night I thought) but samll enough to be intimate (in that non-gay way). Just a simple equation of the right people listening to the right (and broad) music in the right atmosphere and environment.

Only regret was missing a lot of Paul D spot, A1 south was blocked. Goes without too much comment that Kitch and Dean Anderson (first time I've spoken to Dean - what a bloody nice bloke) did great spots, myself and Kev Holmes had a few of those gazing into each others eyes, mouths wide open (perhaps a little bit way) as the first bars broke and you realise you are listening to something very special. But I like to hear what the regulars are playing. Thought Ray's final spot wouldn't usually be my first taste but it fits in well to round off a great night.

Will be coming again, I think a mini-bus is in order though, tough journey home. Be good to bring a few regulars from our Attic night in Mansfield, perhaps with a tent - it's kind off out in the open round there.

really pleased the night went well , i knew with kitch and dean as guests you would be getting some top upfront sounds , real shame i couldnt make last night but ive checked all the dates for the future and will give this my full support .

just shows there is a sizeable minority wanting to hear something different from the same played out records that we got fed up with 20 years ago to me there are hundreds of good 60s /70s records that have still only had minimul plays .

Cannot say much that hasn't already been said, had an amazing night and the music was superb, Kitch's set blew me away but then so did everyone else's. You are on to an absolute winner guys, please keep it up, see you on the 3rd.

Andy

P.S Ray, any chance of a playlist from your early set.

Just a few lines to add my thanks along with the other DKOF guys (Paul D, Mick D and Bob "the suit" Mawson) to what was a great night of top quality music. Kitch and Dean (what a nice guy!) delivered some real class records to an enthusiastic gathering at the 'Dog in a Doublet'. Lots of comments to the quality of the records played by Dean and Kitch and I would also like to show my appreciation for the sets played by Shaun Whitfield (another real nice guy!) and our very own Paul D as well. Shaun also proving that you don't have to spend ££££ to get some quality pieces of vinyl on the turntables. I knew we were in for a great night as Mick D and I had earlier set up the equipment (those Numark TT's turntables were the business Mick) and as I was first on at 8pm I turned up at 7.45pm thinking to myself, I can have a quiet sit down and a bite to eat before anyone arrives - how wrong was I - there were atleast a dozen or so allready in - waiting to hear the music!! So I fired up the decks and got the sounds playing right away.

Before I forget here is my play list (in no particular order) from my early 8pm warm up spot. Thanks for your interest Andy - and to those that commented favourably on my selections.

Patty & The Emblems - Mixed up shook up girl (Herald)

Tammi Terrell - Baby don't'cha worry (Motown)

Les Chansonettes - Don't let him hurt you (Shrine) - especially for Bob & Paul!!

Leroy Taylor - Takin my time (Shrine)

Johnny Bartel - If this isn't love (Solid State)

Jimmy Armstrong - Mystery (Shrine)

Buddy Ace - True love money can't buy (Duke)

The Shepards - Little girl lost (ABC Paramount)

Music Track - Times gone by (IA) - apparantly old Yvonne Baker Orch c/up?

Clara Hardy - I dream of you (Tuna)

Larry Williams - Boss lovin (El Bam)

The Solitaires - Fool that I am (MGM)

The Ringleaders - Baby, what has happened (M-Pac)

Johnny Durant - Some day I'll get over you (Big City)

I wont list what I played in my last 45 min slot (unless someone wants them listing?) as a fair few have been mentioned allready plus I think most would be more interested in the sets played by Dean and Kitch!!

Good to see friends old and new and to put some faces to a few names I've chatted to on Soulsource and via the DKOF website - www.dkof.org. Shame my old pals Lenny Dobson and Tony Parker couldn't make it but thanks for the encouragement and comments on this event. Nice comment Tony - you hit the nail on the head.

Interesting view from Baz saying :-

"why does it have to be a differnt kettle of fish? musicly all venues should be like this playing good danceble soul music"

I couldn't agree more! :wicked:

Thanks also for a couple of comments on the play list of mine for the last 45mins. All I can say is who fancies going on after Dean and Kitch when they have played such great records and you have a full dance floor and those not dancing look like they are in some kind of stunned silence chins on the floor, having been blown away by another superb 45 played by these guys!! When I went on we had just had about 3 hours of solid 60's and so I played a few 70's before a couple of 60's tracks winding down to two of my favourite beat ballards - Clydie King "Missing my baby" (Imperial) and William Hunt "Would you believe" (Streamside). It had been decided before the night by us at DKOF that the superb William Hunt track would now be the last record that we will always finish up on - aint that right Mick!! - thanks Geoff for your appreciation for my ending the night with these two tracks.

Thanks again to all those that came, listned and danced and created such a great atmosphere. Quick plug - our next date should also be another blinding night with Guy Hennigan and Dave Thorley - Friday 3rd August. Also check out our website (some photos being posted here) and our radio show every Monday evening 8pm til 10pm - follow the link from www.dkof.org

Thanks all once again, Ray Mahoney

I can only agree with what's already been said... top class!

Paul was on when I arrived, playing quality, uptempo mainly 60s soul and the place was buzzing.

Then Kitch and Dean played sets which were, as someone has said, "sensational".

No bullshit on the mike, just one great record after another. THESE guys are the "A list DJs".. never mind what you read on another recent thread!

Couple of memorable tracks for me were Mac Staten and Wilbur Reynolds, which I think Bob played last time. Any chance of getting playlists from the guests? :sleep3:

There's obviously been a lot of thought and effort put into this event and I hope it continues to flourish. thumbsup.gif

Continued thanks for all the great comments and feedback. You can see a fair number of the tracks played - yes, we are working on getting a list of played tunes from Kitch and Mr Anderson which, is easier said than done!

Thanks Mak for mentioning my Johnny Durain - Some day I'll get over you (Big City) spin, as I've been keen to play this for ages. What a superb 45.

Also, had a commnet on the night for the Tammi Terrell "Baby 'don'tcha worry"- this is a flip side to her "Come on and see me" on Motown (M1095).

Thanks, Ray

Ps. Hope you had a good Birthday Gill

Hi Guys

Looks like your 2nd nite was a great one, must try and get down in August (well down and across I think from where we live)

Were glad that these kind of nites are springing up in a few places here and there we tried the same thing about 8 - 10 years ago, the music was always fantastic with a lot of support from a few regulars (quite a few of them travelled a fair way from Halifax to Cheshire) and DJ's like Carl & Maria Willingham, Alex Jones, Phil Threlfall, Chris Penn, Dave T and Simon Blackburn to name just a few (memory's not what it used to be) anyway we stopped after a few years but have now started a nite in Holmes Chapell, whilst it's not all rare soul that's played the DJ's are given a free hand to play what they want, which on our first night proved very popular, were just trying to put on a nite that's a little bit different from the norm, which I'm sure is what your doing. Our 2nd nite is this Saturday (30th) so I suppose were in the same boat really, weve had alot of interest (thread on the events page) plus e-mails and phone calls and as we go out a lot we have managed to put a lot of flyers out, weve had a lot of help from friends and DKOF radio has advertised for us as well (thanks Guys it much appreciated) so hopefully we will have a few in, we had about 70 at the first night which was the week after Prestatyn.

There is also a nite at Thornton Sports and Social Club up near Blackpool that we went to on Saturday nite and what a nite it was, it is two rooms main room with oldies etc and the back room was rare soul unfortunately there was only a few of us in the back but the music was second to none and the company was great and we will definately be back up there next time it's on.

Anyway sorry to go on so much but I just wanted to let you know that there is a need for this kind of night and hopefully we will pay you a visit soon and likewise your welcome at Holmes Chapell anytime were only on every other month so for this year June, August, October and maybe December but weve not confirmed a date yet with the Manager who I might add is well up for the night even taking flyers out with him.

Well done and keep up the good work.

Sharon Spittle
