good starting off point would be Eddie Pillars Crossover soul meets Northern soul CD in which there are some cracking salsoul tunes on there

First Choice "Cant Take It WIith you" from their "Breakaway" LP springs instantly to mind...................basically 'cos I've just got myself a copy. Heard "Fingerpoppin' Hans " play it on the Thursday in Amsterdam before the Brussels modern soul weekender and found a copy (LP) for ten "Timi Euros" on the Sunday in Brussels.......................lifes good like that sometimes.

Label for proper disco music, great label, some bad stuff but far outweighed by the good.

As I said proper disco music (thats meant as a compliment) but also many proto house records, just a milestone in a black music history (sometimes known as soul )

Some did cross over though to the more progressive rare soul floors, Leroy Burgess Heartbreaker from Mr Buchanan, Janice etc.

As someone else said both sides of Eddie Holman TWBANTR sound great now.

Off to dig out some Salsoul stuff and put my first sound clips up!

PS Phil we obviously posted at same time re LB but great shout about Logg I Know That You Will, possibly the greatest on the label and heard on a proper sound system it just about blew my heart out, Proper dancing music!!

IMHO, probably the most "soulful" track I have heard on Salsoul label is the last side B track on "Let It Snow" album (1980) by Bunny Sigler: «Slowdown». This album is very varied and included a Marvin Gaye's clon track ("The First Time I Saw Your Face") and deliciously crazy nimbers ("disco-psychedelic") as "Super-Duper-Man". As deliciously crazy is also the comments in the back cover by Bunny himself: "If You Don't Have Nothing Intersting To Say... Say Goodbay 70's, Hello 80's"

Another treasure of mine (also original, printed in USA) is the album "Magic Journey" by The Salsoul Orchestra". The cover of EW & F "Getaway" got trumpet riffs and master Michael Pedicin Jr alto sax notes that made this instrumental one of my all time favorites.

Two curiousitys: recently I noticed that Leroy burgess and Logg are the same; and, about Double Exposure, during the years when The Trammps recorded at Phillysound Works label, Jimmy Williams replaced Jimmy Ellis. They recorded recently with Vincent Montana (a record called something like "That's Love Does" that I hearded at a website by a spanish DJ).

There is a nice article in the WAX POETICS Magazine Nr.19 about Joe Bataan called "Boogaloo Bad Boy" with some information about Fania and Salsoul Records. Very interessting.

BTW:

Joe Bataan is playing here in Hamburg in the Mandarin Casino next Sunday. Has anybody an idea what can be expected. Will he play some of his Soul songs or Latin only?

I've just found this 45 in old stock, a single sided UK TEST PRESS with 4 prong small hole center, handwritten credits SPSR 427 stamped in the deadwax.

Can't find any reference to a UK release, anyone know? It is a killer 70s tune!!

Value would drastically change if it was TEST PRESS only. Can anyone disappoint me and come up with the UK label it was released on.

Didn't play there, though went religiously as a punter to the Lizzy Barn, Court school of dancing and the Beacon (Beacon less so - it was further to go and never was sure about "Peters Hi Fi").

My weekdays were thus:

Monday - Barn (Keith seal)

Tuesday - Court

Wed - night in

Thursday - Barn (though the Court ran for a while as well in competition) (Jon Vine)

Friday-Beacon or Tennis Club

Those were the days

There is some comments about the "departure" of some MFSB members to The Salsoul Orchestra and this is a complex question. I beleive both recorded at Sigma Sound Studios and there was Don Renaldo and his strings appearing on PIR artists recordings, Salsoul acts and, of course, countless outside productions as also on Salsoul label under the name of "Salsoul Strings". The same with The Sweethearts Of Sigma (Barbara, Carla & Evette). Norman Harris recorded "Harris Machine" PIR album in 1980 and Vincent Montana recorded his first singles ("Tangerine") for Salsoul around late 1975 and his vivraphone appears on the 1977 album "Summertime" by MFSB...

About Joe Bataan, the latest thing by him I have is the CD "Call My Name" (by spanish label Vampisoul, 2005). Sounds in some tracks, like the Gil Scott-Heron from "The Bottle", very fresh and simultaneously, very 70's. Some tracks are more fusion and some other more latin (not strictly salsa or boogaloo)... He performed live in the "F²rum de les Cultures" in Barcelona featuring Marc Ribot. Recently I acquired the canadian re-edition of Salsoul album "Mestizo".

Great boogie tune on Salsoul from 1984, mixed by Tom Moulton....

Yup Impulse in the High Street was good, but as I worked in London I also got to go to some of the shops there that had more choice on the import front. I do remember getting "Brazilian Love affair" LP out of there though. Jon's shop was as you know quite small and always full of disco equipment as well
