I think it might have been pink vinyl as well I was about 7 or 8.... started a long career of vinyl buying though thankfully my taste improved!!! (the Madonna single is still at my mum's!)

February 28, 200520 yr when very young somehow my mum managed to persuade me to buy a tammy wynette greatest hits album with some christmas money ......... and i think she still has the LP. also a beatles 62-66 comp on red vinyl. first proper choice i made was elvis costello - oliver's army on 45 i think.

February 28, 200520 yr First record purchased with own money: The Brothers "Sing Me" - 1977, pop/reggae thing which I think won "Opportunity Knocks" or similar First Northern: James Coit "Black Power"
February 28, 200520 yr First Northern: James Coit "Black Power" link That was a freebie for me Neil.... well a few of them to be honest.... some guy I know waited, not sure how long or on what day but he'd sussed it, for the "usual" delivery to a shop called Violet Mays in Sheffield.... (used to "stock" quite a few NS way back then, shop still there but not been in for years).... he brought them "all" to the old KGB.... can't remember if it was one of the soul nites or niters.... anyway, they were all snapped up by "buyers" for a couple of quid I seem to remember.... As for my first record bought.... it was Julian Covey "A little Bit Hurt" round about 78ish from a market stall in Sheffield's indoor Castle Market.... if I search my shelves I think I've still got it as not sold on but saved for some silly daft sentimental reason .... Which had a cover of "Just want a little bit" on it which I heard a soul version of many years later but don't know by who. Anyone help?

Another memory is of a couple coming in one Saturday, and asking if anyone had tried to sell a load of Northern Soul records to the shop, seems the couple in question had all their stuff nicked the previous night (if memory serves me right). link Yeh Brett.... too true.... the "boxes" used to either be on the counter itself if it was "new" stuff got or elsewhere in the shop if older at first.... think they used have some paper or card on them saying "soul/motown type stuff" on before the owners got wise.... then they just had "northern" written on the boxes and were, indeed, then kept on them there shelves behind the counter....

Coz I Luv You - Slade link Undoubtedly one of the greatest ten singles ever made and a record I've had a copy of ever since it came out in, what, November 71? Still gives me goosebumps. Brilliant. And Slade Alive was my 2nd ever LP. Reggae Chartbusters Vol 1 was the first.

March 9, 200520 yr At the age of 3 and 4 I was always playing my Mums records, I used to love 'theme from Exodus' and 'Onward christian soldiers' for some reason (though that was probably my Nans), plus before I could read they used to ask me to put a particular Elvis record on and I'd get it right every time - by remembering the shape of the words in the title presumably. F*cking child prodigy I was, it all went wrong once I turned 5.
