I suppose its the same thing as the thought that winning the lottery would ruin your life as your current aspirations would probably seem trivial afterwards, but there is something special about winkling out enough money for a certain tune or sniping something "cheap" off ebay or spotting an underpriced gem in a sales box.

I searched for Gene Toones for about 4 or 5 years before I got one..value had nothing to do with it. I've got an amazing buzz when finding a record regardless of value. When you've searched hard or long for that ellusive gem, I dont think price matters..

You know what, i love that perspective.

For me hunting for those cheap hard records that don't come up is just as much of a buzz, hoping that you will get a nice clean copy and when you put time in it, checking on ebay, gemm, various dealers, lists and wants threads its so nice hearing it drop through the door and hit the carpet then getting it out and putting it on the deck.

Dont get me wrong i'd love a lester tipton, i don't often listen to many big money records because i think alot of them are overly hyped but lester tipton is a phenomenal soul record.

If i had the money i'd love a copy of the dead beats, all time want.

If money was no object you could get one much more easily, you'd probably just have to ask and wave the wad about and one would be produced for enough money. Gene Toones is a good example really; what's a "proper" price - about 800 to 1200 over recent years (occasionally 1500) - if you put a want up and said you'd pay £2.5k - how long would you wait?

Whereas if you want one at the right price then you search and it's really satisfying when you turn one up.

I think when people do that as well it makes it harder for us with smaller budgets to get bargains because people pay way over the odds for records, especially on ebay.

I mean that Freddy King that sold for $300, the edward hamilton that just went for $850, when people get on a keyboard and have a nice bank balance they seem to go wild.

though I suppose (maybe a bit nievely) that regardless of how much cash you have, some records are still hard to find as there aren't many copies to go around...

I've probably paid going rate or slightly more through impatience for many records and have still had to wait to find them. I see what you mean though, I wanted a copy of Natural Four - hangin on to a lie a few years ago and let it be known I was willing to pay £400ish (£50 or more over going rate) as it would have been for a birthday pressie.... I got 2 calls within a few days and 2 became available.. (didn't get it however, found a Sam Dees - lonely for you baby instead) but I see what you mean.

If money was no object, the real thrill would be having the means to go on the hunt for as long as you want or as long as it takes-just keep filling up a truck with records everywhere the road takes you. I've dreamed for many years about travelling cross country in the States or going to other countries and just snatching up all sorts of things on vinyl in many different genres. One thrill would be to buy out a massive load of records and just pick through every little piece and find something that no one has ever heard. The possibility of new sounds is such a good motivating factor for me.

Some of the best records I've ever owned were paid for with small amounts of money and found in such strange and amazing circumstances. Those memories of finding the record for 50 cents or $1.00 are just as exciting for me.

But you've got to admit, you'd love to just roll up to someone like Manship and just say "I'll take that....that...that...oh and that one, too!"

Admit it folks-the whole reason we want money is so we can get more records! I've been collecting for 30 years and I'm only about to turn 37. It's all I've been thinking about the whole time and I've got years ahead of me. I'm definitely a lifer!

Altho as I said earlier it would just wonderful to just buy what you wanted, I have to agree with you Jayne, it's the thrill of the chase, the research & doing the hard yards to find that one or any gem. Personally I love nothing better than walking into an Op shop or second hand record store browsing through the vinyl & getting that 'feeling' (you know the one) when you stumble upon something, the way you casually look around to see who's about, because there's an obvious physiological change when you find rare vinyl (well that's how it seems) just hoping that John Manships not looking over your shoulder & giving the game away.

Still hoping that I'll turn up Larry Santos on Festival one day, it's happen, just when.

The freedom to not have to plan trips in advance, and just travel where I wanted would be fantastic. I'd probably spend six months of the year travelling anyway (And I mean around the world, not in a caravan like Bearsy )

Several years ago i asked John Manship for several records ie Gerri Hall,Prince Phillip Mitchell,Mickie Champion and Willie Kendricks.I made an offer and he sold them to me at a fair price..........if that same situation occurred again ,whatever i offered him he would say they are going to auction!!!!This would be more so with the high end tunes especially after Junior has just sold for such a high price.

As I bought my ticket for the 100 mill euro-millions rollover the other week that was exactly the thought going through my head.

a great thread with lots of interesting posts....a real two sides to a story cos i keep changing my mind !!....at first i thought nah ! its the thrill of the chase,ive bought hundreds of tunes this year alone,im on a budget and only go upto £50(although some 'book' at 4 times that ?)...despite that my two fave finds this year were a fiver each !

but then i think of all those great tunes i can never afford and think ..nah it would be just as much of a thrill spending whatever it cost...putting up wants lists on forums and getting parcels everyday !!!...or as someone said spending months travelling around the states with a portable turntable....

Ive just bought the Jades- and Im thinking I aint gonna do that again in a hurry!

I was more excited about a record Ive just bought of Northern nev that was £15.00 rather than the hundreds I paid for the Jades. So If I had loads of money I dont know which record would excite me that I would part with loads of cash - Maybe the Servicemen - Are you Angry- thats about it!

Most of my wants that excite me are around the £100 - £200 mark - What does that tell you - I dont know - Probably That Im a skinflynt!
