plus he was a northern collector then, and doesn't have the records now,so will only play off cd's at these venues. still the best of his generation by a mile and an importatnt part of my life and my early yrs!

TBH thats a very good example - I remember reading the recent reveiw of Blackpool where everyone was moaning about 'Sking in the Snow' and 'The Snake' being played every hour........ it's much the feeling I got at Blackburn.

What does seem a little odd to me though is why employ all the 'big' name jocks if you're going to limit their scope for plays? - after all you don't need to be a Soul Sam or RS to play Frank Wilson, indeed the very reason these Jocks ARE such 'big' names is because they didn't just play the same old-same old in the past, but instead put the time,effort and money into finding and playing some of the great tracks listed on this thread.

Seems to me it's a bit like employing Lewis Hamilton to deliver your newspapers on a push bike..

with respect back, i didn't mean at THAT night mate i think i did say now,ie at the radio 2 prestwich do,i think he played cd's. may be wrong as i've also slept since then. just a thought tho,if he played frank wilson,wouldn't that have been off cd? i went but honestly can't remember what he played that night.

Thats a very fair point TBH Pete - but it just bring me back to my original point that even in a VERY crowded market there could be scope for what you might call a 'proper' Wigan Nite concentrating on the lesser know stuff that perhaps arn't deemed 'safe' enough at these bigger venues..

There was a cd player in use at the Prestwich radio 2 night, for the use of a particular DJ, but it wasn't RS, sir!

I only joined in to point out that 2 weeks ago RS played OVO at Blackburn which was mentioned at that point in the tread ,this was 2 weeks ago which is closer to 'now' than Prestwich which was about 8 years ago, wish i hadn't bothered now

Thanks to Mark Freeman for encouraging me to dig out my Casino tapes and re-living my wonderful memories of the latter years of the Casino.

Although I use to go to the Oldies nighters and occasionally go in M's, it was the Saturday nights , main dance floor that always did it for me - oh if we could turn back time?

Russ, Richard, Soul Sam, Gary Rushbrooke, Pat Brady, Keith Minshull, Brian Rae and Dave Evison etc. - Respect to you all for such wonderful memories!

On some nights there was only a few hundred people in so am hoping that this is a great opportunity to re-live a moment in time.

A few examples are:

Neil Allen, Chris Plant, Tim Ashibende, Dave Thorley, Atlas, Geoff Oakes, Dave Shaw, Waggsy, Trusser, Harpo, The twins, Rob Marriott, Vernon, Martin Maylor, Blondie, Ricky Brown, Pete French, Fletch, Tracey, Pip and the rest of the Stroud contingent. The Gloucester crowd and so many more from Worcester, Redditch, Crewe, Manchester, Scotland etc.

Also the people that I didn't meet at the Casino but then met afterwards and found out they were also there, Guy, Keb, Butch, Gilly etc.

Also to the wonderful soulies that we no longer see around Dave Alcock, Pete Lawson, Tommo, Mudd and others R.I.P.

Anyway if you were there between 1979-1981 please leave a comment.

For me it was inevitable, soul then, as now can't be stuck in 1973, but must change to reflect the new soulies who will keep NS alive.

Can anyone remember near the end of the Casino there was a All-dayer on a Sunday in Stoke on Trent I can remember catching the train from Wigan after the nighter there was loads travelling down for it but can't for the life of me recall the name of the place! I can remember it was at a night club that had a double Decker bus on the top floor where they served food I don't think I ever got that smashed to just dreamt that ! ...................Thinking about it I keep getting the name Deville's or something like that all the Wigan jocks where on I think .

I know because Court Davis is my older brother, and remember when the song was recorded. The Real Court lives outside of Philadelphia (PA USA). We love seeing the mentions and that Try to Think is still being played and enjoyed.

Over the years to try to maintain the obscurity of a release a dee-jay would cover the label up and call it by a different name and this is where the Herbie Williams name comes in.

After many years this was finally uncovered so people became aware of who it really was.

Please say hello to Court and respect from the UK Soul scene.

There is another thread on this but like many others found this quite frustrating at the time.

The petition was started by some well respected and fairly influential soulies, one name who was known to many on the scene at the time.

Sam at the time was playing some great things although I know got challenged on a few e.g. when he first played Coffee and Casanova off the LP, it sounded great and loads of people went up on the stage to find out what it was but then Sam got slated when it later became a hit.

I can remember quite a few tracks that Sam was playing while he was a resident dj, that others started playing when he was no longer there.

All in the past now but quite frustrating at the time for all of the soulies who went to the Casino looking forward to certain dee-jays spots.

Great to see Sam still there with name in lights!

Two records that I have seen mentioned on this thread I must pass comment on - Leon Thomas' 'L-O-V-E that I tried for ages to find thinking it's hook-line was 'Elooo-wicki' (balls) and Roger K's - 'Give Me The Love' - which, from it's killer dramatic clash-cymbal/bass-line opening (the place seemed to stand still for me when it came on) to it's end was a truly burnt in the memory Wigan moment.

I have occasionally posted this about the period in Wigan's history when the attendance was that poor that only M's was opened - hard to believe - but true - it was an odd time, on the back of never having experienced a Wigan that wasn't the big-time affair I was expecting....but none the less rewarding.

Which shows you what a truly stippled period Wigan's last two years held.

None the worse for the real people who attended for the same reason they spent their train/bus-fare on - that music.

As an aside, I was booked last minute for an awfully under attended club last week and the resident said (almost in apology), "It's awful when there's so few in isn't it?" to which my reply was "I'm here, you're here, the music's right - who gives a f***!"

I know that sounds terribly self-righteous and a bit bleeding heart but I meant it.

Right, I'm about to go off on one, so I'll leave it.

I'll try again though seeing as you brought it up Teapot - do oldies nostalgia nights play stuff like Paris, Court Davis, Del Tours, Clyde McPhatter, John and the Weirdest, Moses Dillard, Vondelles, Eddie Daye etc - all very well known oldies. I tend to avoid nostalgia nights as the very few I've been to really don't do it for me personally, played a top 100 not 500, and the Djs / punters don't tend to post play lists. For a change I'd actually go to an oldies event if this stuff was played.

Hi Mark,

I just figured out how the Forum works, and how to see the replies. I'll pass your kind words on to Court. I'll also have to get him on Soul Source. He did leave a comment on the You Tube "Try to Think What You're Doing "video." None of the three of his records got more than the tiniest bit of airplay in a small market in the states. We are amazed that Try to Think even got to England, much less was popular in the Northern Soul circles. It's all very cool.

Much depends on what your take (or indeed the promoters/DJ's take) on a "Nostalgia night" is?, ie the tracks you've listed are not excactly floor fillers at most Top 100 nights - they would proberbly fit in more with perhaps an 'Underplayed night' even though you could still call them "Nostalgia", which was sort of the point I was making, an overplayed oldie and an underplayed 60's track are still 'Nostalgia' as such, yet they are viewed VERY differently to many on here...

Interestingly I went to my 'local' night last night which describes itself as 'Across the board' which does-to some smack of Top 100/Nostalgia etc, yet I heard Paul Newmans 'Ain't you got a Heart', The Shalamars 'Stop and Take a look at yourself', Florence Devore 'Kiss me Now' and even my fave Cecil Washington track (and No!, I didn't request it ) add to this a few of the tracks listed on this thread and of course the more 'popular' stuff ie DJ Genitals, Neo and the usual Classic oldies etc, and you've got perhaps a 'truely' Across the board night - yet if one of the Jocks listed the plays on here it would doubtless be deemed a Dinosaur/Handbag night by some...... hence perhaps why they don't bother..

I do think though that there would be scope for perhaps a quarterly night somewhere which concentrates on the lesser well know stuff from the above Wigan years - the problem of course is if it would get the support given the VERY crowded venue lists most weekends..

Well Mark the Bobby King track was always said to be album only, but i know Keith Minshull has one on a single.(album is "Bobby King" on W Bros.)

The Ellusion track never got the break it deserved with only a few of us airing it at the time, the album is i'm told "hard" to get it is called "All toys break" on Cotillion(i recommend this)

The Champaign track was a Wolvo special, and is the final track on the "How about us" album. we picked one up for £3. its a great track but needs to be pitched down a little nowadays in my opinion

Was pm'img Neil(Allen) earlier today, there are so mant tales to be told, from those special nights, well it was weekends most times with the likes of the oldies, clifton hall, the britt, the bear, bedford etc...etc...on fridays, then off to Kev 'n; Shazz's or Lornas, if we could get a lift.

What a joy to be in the company of the craziest, reckless bunch of wonderful people you could ever wish to meet. talk about living to the maxx, and then more piled in on top, yet through all that we came out with so many life long mates, and great memories.

If you told the tales to an outsider, they would scoff and say nobody would get up to those things, but we did weekly

Dave from Anglesey stopped me a few months ago, must have been 20 plus years but it was as if it had been 8am the Sunday before, and that applies to so many of us,,,thats so special for me as around here no fucker will speak to me, only jokin really the kids spoke only last year LOL

We dont need to meet in a mall, to be together "the memories still remain in our hearts"

Opinion is, and will, always be divided, but I was there and it was great (usually) my memories are very strong, even after all these years I still feel it was the best venue I ever went to, and I went to a lot.
