For the last few days now my mobile phone has been goin mental chicken oriental with Middleton coming up this Saturday. The fact that it's relocating in the leisure centre opposite the old venue talk has been of swimming after the Allnighter.

Now me old pal Steve Lehair tells me of how there was a fair few who used to visit the swimming baths after the Casino, is this true? How many went and are there any of the Soulful Swimmers on list?

It's not known as yet if we can all swim after Middleton, I know that The South Yorkshire Massive are taking their trunks n Mankinis and it is our intention of starting a Northernsoul Synchronized Swimming Club

Our swimming music could be.......................

Detroit Executives - Cool Off

Ramsey Lewis - Wade in the Water

Platters - Washed Ashore

Absolutely true. Seats were quite high up and the pool was massive. Must have gone there 20 or 30 times, never went near a drop of water though

We once to a " rookie " to WC , and upon leaving , told him we were going to where it cost a couple of bob to get in , lots of half dressed ladies parading around , and all you could drink ..........

He was so disappointed when we took him to the baths  ..........

Be careful of Leg Cramps and Dehydration, when swimming (especially in the deep end) after a niter.

Knew someone who nearly drowned in Wigan Baths after a nights fun and frivolities at the Casino. Was

always lucky enough to have transport to Wigan so away to Sandbach services for a full English was the

order of the day for me

Shant take a dip at Middleton meself, might come and judge the competition for best pair of Bermudas though

Regards

Doctor Paul

An article in the Sunday Times in Feb 1976 was an early example of Northern going National.

Most of it was based on interviews with a guy named "Gary from Barrow" and one of those interviews was outside the Wigan baths.

e.g.

"The weeks not the same if I miss Wigan," Gary said. He was sunning himself on a bench outside Wigan's new municipal baths in Rodney Street, waiting for a queue composed equally of Soul fans and familes of Sunday morning swimmers to start disappearing beyond the turnstiles before he joined it.

Even as he was talking, at nine on a Sunday morning outside Wigan Baths, a cassette recorder was murmuring under the tips of Gary's fingers which were going tap-tap-tap on the beat.

Young families were still arriving with their rolled and laundered towels, but the queue outside the baths had dwindled to the point where Gary felt he might as well join it; he would have a shower and something to eat, laze around in the sun, then make his way by road to a club in Bolton called The Blackbeat.

There is mention somewhere that the cost of a shower at the municipal baths was 7p!!!

We(Wolverhampton crowd) used to go after the casino now and again. Once,as I remember, I was waiting to dive off top when a whistle would blow to let you know it was clear. All the people in the stands watched as I dived and lost my trunks. Well.. after a nite on gear you can imagine how I felt :lol:

One girl laughed and said "who are you gonna please with that?" so I replied.... "myself":thumbup:

The first bit is true though
