  1. I think the scene is way bigger now , when I first got into the scene in 73 /74 ,The Torch had shut ,Catacombs also , Wigan Casino was the only regular weekly nighter , followed by Cleethorpes and Yate on a less frequent basis .There were a few friday nighters like Samanthas Sheffield , and later KGB Club ,both in Sheffield .There were quite a few all dayers like The Ritz ,Blackpool Mecca was open still , but changing over to a more Jazz Funk/ Disco outlook by '77 . Birmingham Locarno , and Bank Holiday All Dayers in Derby , Kettering etc , but nowhere near as much as now .Also if you wanted to buy the music , you had to search for it by subscribing to lists , visiting specialist shops , junking , reading fanzines and trading tapes to learn the trade .It's huge now, and Worldwide ....
  2. Loved those green sleeves the '45's usually arrived in ....
  3. Enjoyed that , seem a nice bunch of collectors ...
  4. The La Beat issue copy I had off Soul Bowl for £12 ,was in great condition ,except for a tiny bit of water damage to label on the B side .Sold it for £400 to a well known dealer in 1991 , and only had one more offer for it ....
  5. What a fantastic tribute to Soul Bowl Records,Mark .I had been buying from them since the mid 70's , but I think my best buys were from 1980 onwards , once I became a postman .This was because I got my list at work at 5am and was able to browse carefully while sorting , and be at a phone box dead on 8am to make the all important call .I remember calling once at 7.30 because Soulville All Stars " I'm gonna get to you " was on there for £2 , John's then young son answered the phone ,quickly followed by John laughing ....yes I got it BTW .Other great buys were Willie Hutch " Love runs out " £25 ,Peoples Choice " Saving my love for you " £12 , Willie Tee " I'm having so much fun " £3 [ off the Soul section ] ,Al Williams on La Beat £12 etc etc .Even now I pass the phone boxes in town , and think " I got so and so that morning " bit sad I know ...Front page focus was always a great section of records John had stocks of : Ivorys " Please Stay " £6 ,Matthew Barnett on Puff £6 , Len Jewell " All my good lovin " on Pzazz £3 , it was endless .I think John and Soul Bowl was the best ever record list ,and very fair with prices and condition of records .Best wishes ,Eddie

  10. I remember an interview Martin did with Richard Searling ,and he said first time he went was Xmas '67 , and the first record he bought was " Shades Down " by Detroit Emeralds on Ric- Tic , and then laughed ,saying imagine what records would have been in the Detroit shops at that time .He then came back and went and stayed a year later .He also said he had the first USA Blue Stax of " Candy " by The Astors at The Wheel ,which was only known at that time on UK Black Atlantic .Look forward to the book and any videos etc .cheers Eddie

  15. Thanks Pete and John , I found my copy of Milton Wight on Satiron in a mainly pop collection ,two streets from my house , for 50p .Didn't play " Like A Rolling Stone " for months as I assumed it was the inst , as in flip of " The Gallop " , until I noticed Keith Money was playing it .It's now one of my all time fave records , sounding brilliant at The 100 Club recently .
  16. Any idea where John got the label name Satiron from Pete ?
  17. The original version of " I've been fooled before " is by Verble Domino on Toi Records out of Chicago .Verble is actually Sherman Nesbary who cut " Don't make me sorry " in the 70's .

  21. I remember Richard did play records that were brought up to the decks sometimes .Was stood up there on two occasions when Mick Smith brought up records to play ,Eddie Parker on Awake [ Richard said " I remember this from The Torch ] and Frankie Beverley " Because of my heart " , which was a Rouser copy I recall .So maybe the same thing happened with Tommy Ridgeley ?
  22. Same backing as this I believe ....
