Northern Soul In the Mainstream 2022
Have seen this kind of thing cropping up from time to time , even in Cold Feet , maybe the producers think it's trendy , but surely Old Skool , would be more appropriate even House it just doesn't go with the characters portrayed within the story lines .

Cheap 45, now expensive
Back in 82 , Clarkies list mail order no internet , Limitations Lonely etc £8. Natural Four I Thought etc £8.Nowadays Jon Allen and the Skinner Bros £12. a week later £75 plus, it's now becoming a numbers market and definitely not what's in the grooves market , a scene that was once driven by the dance floor reaction maybe is taking a deferent route , I remember a similar conversation back in the early 80s ,would these records stand the test of time ,, answer yes But surely nowadays there has to be less collectors , so prices should be more reasonable,, And the amount of reissues of ordinary and cheap original easily available vinyl ,doesn't make sense either ,, I don't think and never have , that the rare soul scene is any different from any other money making market when full of entrepreneurs , who just want to take advantage of a market when numbers are scarce or are they ???

Restoration of old wooden box, DIY project , any others
Very carefully individually cut out from old mags , fanzines , etc that I'd purchased over the years some had twice and some scanned , each one stuck on individually with clear PVA ,then 5 coats of clear PVA to seal , the base sanded waxed and polished, the felt was from an old poker set , again from a boot sale , and the legs saved from a trip to the tip , the labels are deliberately turned to face each direction of the box/table so can be seen from all directions , even the carpet adhesive to fix the felt was a freebie , I swapped my wife for the handle and hooks , she wants them for a project she's got on the go , separate workshops , it's the only solution lol

Restoration of old wooden box, DIY project , any others
Had this old box , bought on a car boot back in late 80s , thought possibly military or tool box .has been used to store tools and vinyl , but was on the verge of chucking in out , and then I saw one of my neighbours loading up for a trip to the tip and asked him I could take the legs off a naff looking glass coffee table. So this is the result and now a very useful beer/ bar table in the man cave , and going to store spare sleeves in it , top has been PVA'd so it is beer proof , The photos not quite come out in the correct order , but from start to the final action shot about 4 days work (whilst recovering from COVID ) and looks great in the man cave too , has anyone else any good ideas , upcycling etc

Interesting development of the scene?
Hi Paul -S , sorry my referral to Once Upon A Time in Wigan , wasn't to determine the fact it was live or soundtrack but mainly the fact it was a piece of work ,I'm sure aimed at the followers of the scene through the ages , correct me if not , and I thoroughly enjoyed the production when I saw it at the Coventry Belgrade. ,What I was making the point of was that in Theatre land they have been enjoying this particular style of music and rightly so and to full houses , and the audience didn't attend because it was labelled as anything more than nostalgia , and a good nights entertainment ok maybe Motown , Shirelles , Wilson Pickett etc , but I was making the point not to confuse and call it the Northern Soul Scene .

Interesting development of the scene?
This sort of thing has been going on for a hell of a long time especially in the Theatre , long before even Once Upon A Time In Wigan ,,. In the Midnight hour , With Geno Washington , doing Wilson Pickett , The Carole King story I forget the title but great theatre , The Motown stories etc all great bands and singers forget how many I've been to at Coventry Belgrade theatre but an excellent nights entertainment and always packed out long live nostalgia , take it for what it is wether play or live band a night of live entertainment , not to be confused with the Northern Soul scene we all love and wanted to keep it an underground secret til that fateful night at the Casino .

Interesting development of the scene?
Surely it's all pop at the end of the day , the vast majority weren't intentionally produced for the Northern Soul Scene, just that we thought otherwise , and created a scene playing a mix of musical types stitching it together and calling it Northern Soul. There is no denying that some of them if played in the public arena at their time of release would surely have made the charts , I'm not talking of the tailor made shit , live bands playing Northern Soul Classics in 2022 just goes to show just how good this music is , I bet most if not all of the audience retired from the scene years ago , or on their Butlins " Motown" weekend in between the bingo , We had an holiday in Majorca Monday ,The Tops , Tuesday ,The Platters ,Washed Ashore ,With This Ring ,Sweet Sweet Lovin , dancefloor packed , didn't look like a soulie in the house , neither at The Tops but still the same reaction we skipped The Drifters on later in the week , But my original point was it's still all pop music not exclusively for the Northern Scene so can't be a bad thing if it's keeping some musicians in work , and I bet they do weddings too , just like Mr Parrish

It's what's in the groove that counts...or is it?
As you say Chalky , the sound is now unimportant ,the value takes precedence , and if released in 2022 say 300 copies , in 5 yrs time it may be 50 copies , in 10 yrs 25 copies but will there be anyone alive who wants them ? , Most records if reissued have slightly different features on the label a slightly lower teardrop on the Penrose label for instance , but why don't the companies involved just release more in the 1st place, why have only 350 or 500 pressed in this day and age , doesn't make sense , and they can't be making a living from these limited releases , the profit is only from resales , I actually contacted the company who released Carmy Love and sent them the discogs page showing it for sale at 120 euros , not interested and definitely no chance of a repress , what do these artists do between releases go busking ? Maybe just thinking aloud , it's time for these companies to grow a pair and have confidence in the product , maybe this is the cause of so many pre orders so they can gauge the possible sales , I know and you know if advertised as limited , it will sell out even if it's piss poor, and to be honest a lot of great tunes worth half as much and deemed not worthy with only 1 issue , greed nothing more , as for OVO etc DJing surely is about entertaining not the same old sounds but 20 times the cost , still new tunes available from the likes of Juno records ie Oliver James ,One And Only , yellow vinyl for £6.50 + P+P , Rarity over quality , surely that's not what the Northern Soul scene was built on ,yes play something new and eventually everybody can get a copy ,if enough issued ,cover ups where apparently to prevent bootlegging , surely we are all entitled to a copy and then hopefully the artists and all involved will be more enthusiastic to make more new exciting tunes , I personally think that cover ups encouraged bootlegging and helped to rip off the artists etc involved , Frank Wilson sold 10k copies as Eddie Foster it's a wonder when finally issued it sold any at the time . I'm not saying exclusives should be shunned but surely no tune was made for only one pair of ears , and as you say , if demand is there press more it's still the same master and sounds the same , it's the promos of well known tunes reissued for possibly the 5th time that puzzle me .

Casino photo without soulies
Somebody , must have still a copy of Blues & Soul which would have posted the Pre Anniversary Alnighter, event that flopped , I was still a regular Saturday night supporter , but living and working in Llandudno at the time , and used to make the pilgrimage via Crewe , and if early enough get off the train and spend an hour or so at a pub close to Crewe Station , where they actually held a Northern night and then onto Wigan with quite an entourage of fellow soulies , but that was the regular Saturday night , not the one mentioned earlier that was cancelled before it really got going, would be interesting to find out if anyone turned up to find it closed , The early session in Crewe I'm pretty sure was still going during the Colwyn Bay Alnighter years , same thing get off at Crewe into the Pub , medication, then back onto a packed out carriage cassette player blasting out the latest floorfiller and and a good night had by all ,at the Casino . I seem to remember at the time Dave Evison , leaping off the stage between introducing records and then climbing back up in time to introduce the next one, Sammy Davies Jnr , then followed by Eddie Parker , he earned his fee not easy at some venues with out steps onto the stage , I was at the doomed Alnighter in Colwyn Bay when the doormen had allowed in a few of the local piss heads in and it all kicked off , big style , tables , chairs ,glasses ok if your up for it , but most weren't.
