Twisted Wheel Article on Manchester Evening News Site

Manchester local websites are always worth a check every now and again as often feature a wide varied range of soul related features

Latest one is another regarding the Twisted Wheel, features a brief moan (for want of a better word) about how no film record of the Twisted Wheel means that Wigan gets all the mentions nowadays in mainstream media, a lookback at those days and a quick catch up on todays ocurances, quite a lengthy one as well.
Worth a trip over there to read the full page, the link is at bottom here's a brief couple of quotes...

If Pete Roberts had his way there would be an official heritage plaque erected outside his beloved Twisted Wheel club."Manchester's not interested. They don't know what they've got here," he grumbles of the city council. But then Roberts - a teen regular at the club, and now its promoter and DJ - knows full well why the Twisted Wheel's heyday will remain forever shrouded in the mists of time.

...The black American artists who worked the Wheel could not even eat in 'white' restaurants in their homeland, yet here we used to lift them up in the air and carry them to the stage," says Roberts.

"They couldn't believe the reception they got from a white audience."

But it was the records which were the Wheel's enduring stars. While clubs in London played the familiar soul songs from the Tamla Motown, Stax and Atlantic labels, merchant seamen came to Liverpool with American rare grooves - records you could not buy in British shops - fuelling a distinctly northern underground soul scene.....

In Prison - a cd release from Trikont

News of a interesting concept for an album release, from German compant Trikont comes details of an album built up using "Afroamerican Prison Music from Blues to HipHop" as th esource. Compiled by Jonathan Fischer and Ian Ensslen

Clip below from the website
(link at bottom)

No country in the world locks up more of its citizens than the United States of America. Nearly half of the 2.2 million prisoners are African Americans - which equals four times the actual black population percentage. One out of eight African American men between age 20 and 35 is in prison: A circumstance, which has serious effects upon African American society and culture - and not at last upon the topics of its music. When Angela Davis draws a historical line from slavery to the American justice and prison system of today, it was black popular music that always mirrored the experience of racial discrimination and degradation, as well as fierce resistance and the will to survive.

From the work songs of the chain gangs to the wails of imprisoned bluesmen like Robert Pete Williams, from the prison-soul of the Escorts to the enraged HipHop-accusations of Tupac Shakur ("16 on Death Row"), Brand Nubian ("Criminal Minded") or K-Solo ("Premonition Of A Black Prisoner"). Featuring among others Fred Mc Dowell, Lifer's Group, Dead Prez, Curtis Mayfield, Bobby Womack, The Escorts, The Temptations, Akon, The Last Poets, Tupac Shakur, The Escorts, Robert Pete Williams, Nina Simone

The Rebirth Of Lady Blues

Blues Poetry Introduction By Jacqueline Amos

When I think about the Blues Singer Jacqueline Amos, I often reflect on the times of Cotton Club Comes To Harlem with Lady Blues, Billy Holiday, the reflection sends a light of the times of the 1940's, the horns that plays from the direct spirit of Blues, and the sounds of the pass, which reverts through the mike of Lady Blues Jackie, this vibrant cry, take me to the cotton club brings the applauds from the audience, Jacqueline not only a literarily writer but a composer who gets down and dirty at times, singing the flows of which she refer to her ancestors, the cries from the mike, my mama done told me, I was a country girl, but I took a chance on the silver meter to release my pain, through this heroic symposium, of blues and poetic compositions she let the world feel the revolution of composition.
I'se Country Girl deep from the south pick plenty of cotton and milked many cows, she goes into a trans as she sings, release my spirit look out; here comes the spirit that lives within, Billy holiday presents, she sings as the sweat surrounds the implementation of her brow, play those down home blues she cries at the keyboard, let me step out my form, and take on the presence of the ancestors who brought me to a new form of blues.
The southern blues is the style of lady blues; her dynamic style portrays Billy Holliday, Bessie Smith, Etta James, Earthier Kit," My man Doesn't Love Me" Billy Holiday, and many exceptional lady blues singers, her high light is differently original, with that misty forte of blues aesthetics " Many say she is the resurrection of the past. Lady blues Jackie compose on the rhythm of the bars of notes; the melody instantly forms a historic symphony of blues. Lady Blues portray the 40's in her conservatory of originals, feeling the soul that lives within her, her vocal style at times resemble Bessie Smith, and many masters of the blues. Lady Blues also creates a forum the back door blues.
Jacqueline inspirations were Billy Holiday, Bessie Smith, Lenis Guess, B.B King, many celebrities of blues, Jacqueline states I lived around the components of blues, simplified through the history of my family genes, I take on a new preservation of modern blues and jazz, with a touch of honey that sticks to my ribs, the legends that lives through me, The symposium preceded a performance of blues related to the compositions of her poetry, the pain of pleasure one might say sadistic in the format of relevance, the association of pain and pleasure, Lady Blues Jackie have been performing since the age of 19 relating to the stories of her family tree;
I think she is genuinely please to release the sounds that are instill through birth, Jacqueline speaks of her auntie Louise Corley, she perform in the clubs of Harlem, which she has now passed on, she speaks of the time when she watched her auntie perform for her family, hoping that one day she could do the same, her father a southern a lover of music as well as her mother, it runs through the genes, as well as her sister, but the voices of originality presents the blues as she was back in the 1940's as well as her poetic compositions.
Mama Sings the Blues A Night in Harlem Black gals with the greasy curl; High top shoes, black man, with The platted suits, gold cuffs With shinning puffs, Black gal's With Flower in the hair, Black man, culture vise; Black power pride, sweet Black jazz, with the taste Of Louie Armstrong;
Black man with the swinging Watch, laid out With the conquer lean hair; Flashing lights, cigarettes that Linger in the air, Playing that black jazz Feathers in the derby hats;
Cotton club comes to Harlem; Play that black jazz Billie holiday sings My man don't love me Any more, as the horns Play, singing mama he Don't feel my pain. Bill Robinson smiling, Blues dancing, Josephine, royal, Black girl flowing with her dance, Big bosom black gal, as she sings the down home blues.
Black gals dancing The camels walk with fingers pointing in the air; Charleston let mama sing; The black girls throw their legs In the air, playing that blues Come on down with the Mix, mama done song that Black jazz, sweet incenses; lets Get it own down here. Sweet smells of Harlem Through The Back Door Aren't al dat, boys on the band stand; boy play that horn, waiting for de'nit to come, down with black boy blues, playing for the white folks, back door to the stage front, jazz my mind as I take a blow, white powder enhance my flow,, high top pants, striped jacket, collar turned up so, greasy hair, conquer lean, white folks , white table cloths, playing in the house, where the white folks go. Belfast Soul Club 3rd Anniversary Weekender

What an absolutely fabulous couple of days this was. I'd never been to Ireland before, but everything I had heard about the hospitality of the Irish is absolutely true. Big thanks to Liam and Phil for looking after me, and all the other DJs so well.

Saturday night was held in two rooms, and after a little bit of consternation because the decks in the freestyle room were jumping when people danced we got it all sorted. Both rooms were busy at various times of the night, as well as the bar area, and I know that the DJs between them covered the whole lot from R & B, to Oldies, to rarities, to unknowns, to Crossover, with a few Seventies thrown in as well.

On the Saturday the two spots I did were crowd pleasers rather than anything else, and although I intended to do an R & B spot in the Freestyle Room a camera crew were there from Irish TV so Liam asked me to play some uptempo Oldies to fill the room and get them dancing (No flies on this lad when it comes to promotion )

The Main room spot on Saturday got the floor really busy, and I even coped with having the lights turned on three records in (I just ignored it, and decided if people kept dancing I'd keep playing records, eventually that was sorted and the lights went off again, which in a way was perhaps a bad thing because Liam couldn't see where he was dropping his bag and managed to knock all the sound off later in the spot :whistling: )

The Sunday all dayer was supposed to be a bit more laid back, and certainly that's how Phil Shields and I started the session off, however by the time I did my second spot people were dancing away and requesting uptempo things, so I threw a real mixture in.

Unfortunately I had to leave for my flight half an hour after my spot finished so don't know how the last three hours went, but I'd just like to say thanks to all the people who came and spoke to me on the way out, it's nice to know that the records you've played have been appreciated.

In the words of Jimmy Wallace 'I'll Be Back'

STANLEY MITCHELL
Stanley Mitchell's singing career could be the book about the history of R&B vocal groups. Blessed with a silky smooth voice, Stanley, like many of the R&B performers of the time, got his start singing in the church. "My whole family sang, it was just the standard thing, we all sang in gospel choirs." As a teenager he formed his first R&B group, the Cherokons, with his neighborhood buddies. His first big break came at an amateur contest headlined by Billy Ward & The Dominoes. Impressed by his singing, Ward asked him to join the group. He did, but only stayed for a few months, just long enough to do the Ed Sullivan Show. Stanley didn't stay unemployed very long. Lionel Hampton, impressed with the Cherokons, hired the band to be the new Hamp-Tones. He spent a year on the road with the Hamp-Tones, then quit the band and returned to Detroit. Back in the Motor City, he formed the Tornadoes with some former Midnighters. Chess Records signed the band, and their debut single "Four O'Clock in the Morning" became a top ten R&B hit. The Tornadoes moved to the Bumble Bee label before calling it quits in the early 60's. Stanley went on to record a solo record for the Gone label before going to Motown as backing vocalist. In the mid-60's he joined the Royal Jokers, and ended up staying with them for the next few years. In 1968 he went solo again and recorded a single on Dynamo Records

Fame Records - new deal with EMI may mean fresh rare output

MUSCLE SHOALS, Alabama The world-famous FAME Records- based in the fabled music mecca of Muscle Shoals, Alabama - has signed a distribution agreement with EMI Music Marketing in the United States.

Under the terms of the deal, EMI will distribute new FAME Records product along with rare and vintage Southern soul and rhythm-and-blues recordings from the treasured FAME vaults.

"This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the story of FAME and Muscle Shoals music," says legendary producer Rick Hall, founder of the historic, hit-generating FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals. "This new deal with EMI gives us an excellent opportunity to develop new acts here at FAME and possibly bring some established artists here to Muscle Shoals to record their projects. It's also an ideal time to dig into our catalog and
put out some classic hits and rare cuts that fans of Muscle Shoals soul have been waiting to hear."

"The timing couldn't be more perfect," says Hall. "This new deal with EMI follows on the heels of a recent resurgence in Muscle Shoals music. Acts based here or linked with this area - acts like the Drive-by Truckers (New West), Gary Nichols (Mercury), Bo Bice (BMG) and Heartland (Lofton Creek) - are having chart success in rock and country and keeping the Muscle Shoals
tradition alive and well in the 21st century. In addition, Muscle Shoals native John Paul White is slated to record his first record for EMI's Capitol Records at FAME Recording studios. This new distribution agreement with EMI enables us to prove once again that Muscle Shoals remains a major force in the music world."

In addition to providing an outlet for future FAME Records product, the EMI distribution deal will include the opportunity for the long awaited reissues of classic music from Fame's catalogue from the heyday of "Southern soul," a warm, funky brand of rhythm-and-blues that first popularized the unmistakable "Muscle Shoals sound." Additionally, the FAME-EMI relationship
includes the opportunity to distribute many of these records in compilations of masters by the likes of Candi Staton, Dan Penn, Jimmy Hughes, Arthur Alexander, Clarence Carter, Willie Hightower, Spencer Wiggins and James Govan as well as the FAME Gang, an all-star act made up of Hall's multi-talented studio musicians.

"Some of these old masters have never been released at all, and only a select few of them have ever been released on CD," added Rodney Hall, who has helped document and preserve the company's rich, one-of-a-kind musical archives. "It's really the last great soul catalog to come out on CD, and I know that there's definitely some intense interest among diehard fans of
Southern soul and R&B. They're eager to add these classic recordings to their collections."

The Just Bros Story by Rob Moss

The Just Bros Story by Rob Moss
Site note - this article was originally published on Soul Source in full back in 2006, it was clipped approx 2012 at the author Rob Moss's request. Rob here in 2023, has just given us the ok to revive and re-publish this and others in full.
This is the first revived one and the plan is to revive the others on a weekly basis.

The Just Bros Story by Rob Moss
As a Northern Soul anthem, "Sliced Tomatoes" by the Just Brothers stands alone. It retains all the hallmarks of a classic Detroit instrumental – exuding pure excitement onto every dance floor, and transfixing the listener with infectious rhythm guitar licks and a rapid fire drum track.

When it was released in 1972 on Music Merchant records, the reaction across the land was immediate … and enduring. It became THE floor filler, almost without equal, and literally defined a music genre single handily.
To the keen ear, however, something was amiss. True aficionados struggled to understand how a record so gloriously mired in the 1960s, by 'sound', 'feel' and technique, could have come out yesterday! The full story of it's creation and development presents a fascinating insight into some of the more bizarre aspects of recording practice, and leads perfectly into a scrutiny of a group that had previously been shrouded in mystery.
Unlike most groups, the Just Brothers evolved more by accident than design. A teenage Frank Bryant had shown such musical promise and potential that local entrepreneur Don Davis had signed him to a producer's contract at the fledgling Thelma's Records as early as 1964.

While his older brother Jimmy was completing military service, Frank joined the pool of session musicians in Detroit who were beginning to establish the city's reputation as a major music centre. Among his first recording credits were Gino Washington's "Gino is a coward" at Correctone, on his favoured bass guitar, and as a vocalist on J.J. Barnes' "Lonely no more" for Mickay's Records. He would share writing credits with J.J. on his "Deeper in love", and wrote "Let's party" for Steve Mancha, even though this was released as an instrumental called "Making up time" by the Holidays, and incorrectly credited to Don Davis.
Many other sessions followed, but it wasn't until a visit to Detroit's famed 20 Grand nightspot by legendary vocal group The Drifters that events took a fortunate turn for Frank and Jimmy Bryant.

Winifred 'Johnny' Terry Second from the left
One of the group members, Winifred 'Johnny' Terry was a native Detroiter who wanted to record some of his own songs whilst in town, and needed local musicians to perform at the session. The Drifters' tour drummer was none other than 'Funk Brother' Richard 'Pistol' Allen, and it was to him that Terry gave the task of assembling the players. Allen approached fellow Funk Brothers' guitarist Eddie Willis and keyboard wiz Joe Hunter with Frank Bryant on bass guitar and Drifters backing band member Abdul Ali as a second guitar.

The session was to take place at United Sound Studio, and would focus on a song called "Honey" for which Terry had assigned a local, since forgotten, vocalist. The backing accompaniment was completed, along with an instrumental track intended as the 'B' side, but the vocalist couldn't perform the song to Terry's satisfaction. It was at this point that Frank suggested that himself and his brother Jimmy, now back from the army, could easily sing the song, and convinced Johnny Terry to give them a chance. At the subsequent session they not only performed and recorded "Honey" to Terry's satisfaction, but recorded one of their own compositions, "Things will get better" and a song local writers Don Juan Mancha and Fred Bridges had created, under the pseudonym 'Freddie Pride', "She broke his heart".

Their first official release, as 'Just Bros' came in mid 1965 when the instrumental 'B' side previously intended for "Honey" was released on Lupine 001 as "Sliced tomatoes" accompanied by "Things will get better".

Fascinating to note that the record was produced by 'The Lively Ones'! It sank without trace as a commercial entity, but resurfaced over seven years later to a quite different fate. The mystery of how, and why, it came out on H-D-H's Music Merchant label has confounded many for years. The simple truth can be found in the relationship Johnny Terry enjoyed with the Holland brothers – he is their brother in law. Easy access at family gatherings no doubt. "Honey" wasn't released at all, and would have been lost forever but for the discovery of a single, badly scratched acetate in the late 1990s (the original master tape had disappeared). Through the wonders of modern technique, and incredible skill and patience by two very talented individuals, the song was restored to its original condition and issued as a 7" single on Hayley Records (HR 003) in 2001.

By the end of 1965 Johnny Terry (pictured right -second left) had established his own Empire production company, which included his own Empire record label, and a roster of local artists. The Honey Bees, Jack Montgomery and The Just Brothers all recorded for Terry. One of the earliest releases on Empire saw "She broke his heart" and "Things will get better" paired together. Don Juan Mancha was recruited as a staff writer and producer, and it was one of his songs that became The Just Brothers' next release. "Carlena" was also recorded at United Sound using many of the same musicians, including Frank on bass. Like many other small, independent operations though, adequate national distribution and promotion was always a problem, and with this in mind, Terry inked a deal with Scepter / Wand for this purpose. The Garrison label was set up to showcase Terry's acts, with a view to gaining national release, should sales potential be reached. "Carlena" was released on the label (with "She broke his heart" as the flip) as well as The Honey Bees' "Let's get back together"/ "Never in a million years", but it was only Jack Montgomery who gained a direct Scepter release with his "Dearly beloved"/ "Do you believe it". Sadly, "Carlena" flopped commercially and the brothers didn't record under their own names again until 1969. Frank continued to stay busy as a session musician both on recordings and on 'live' tours. He joined the Choker Campbell band and played on many of the Motown reviews, before touring with Stevie Wonder, Junior Walker, Four Tops, Contours and Brenda Holloway.

The Just Brothers gained another member in 1969, when Frank's best buddy Willie Kendrick joined the group as an additional vocalist. They had worked together before, at Golden World, when Frank had accompanied Willie to the audition that resulted in his one release for the label "Stop this train" b/w "Fine as wine". In late 1969 they were approached by Johnny Nash who negotiated a deal with Johnny Terry for them to join his Jomada label in New York, where the trio recorded one song, "Good time". Written by Johnny Terry, Jimmy Bryant and Willie Kendrick, the backing track was recorded in Detroit, and produced by Terry and Frank Bryant. Inexplicably, when the record did come out, white crooner Johnny Daye had replaced their voices, and their contract was subsequently cancelled!

Within a year of the Jomada debacle however, Johnny Terry worked with the brothers again, when he represented them to the Holland Dozier triumvirate. He had already negotiated a deal with 'HDH' to re release "Sliced tomatoes" on their Music Merchant label, and wanted to record new material with the Bryant brothers. Coincidentally, Jack Ashford was in the process of assembling local artists for his newly formed Pied Piper production company, and was keen to sign the Just Brothers too. He actually went as far as offering them a specific deal with Pied Piper. After much thought and debate though, it was decided that Willie would join Pied Piper, and Frank and Jimmy would record for Music Merchant. Although a complete album ("Just Brothers" MMA 103) was planned for them, the Just Brothers only recorded two 'new' songs for the label, "Tears ago" and "You've got the love to make me over", and, ironically, they were both paired with "Sliced tomatoes" as single releases. "Things will get better" was re issued on Music Merchant too. One unsolved mystery does remain however. Frank distinctly remembers having the photographs for the album cover taken, but has no idea what became of them.

Frank and Jimmy continued to work together away from the recording studio as members of The Firebirds, a group of musicians who accompanied local artists in the many nightclubs and cabaret spots around Detroit. Joe Hunter tickled keyboards and piano, Dave Hamilton alternated between vibes and guitar, Tony Washington handled the drums, and Sam Coleman and Clarence Hughley played the horns. They frequently backed the likes of Emmanuel Laskey, Dennis Edwards, Fabulous Peps, Gwen Owens, Jack Montgomery plus many others. They even managed to record one record for Excello in 1970, "Soul sonata"/ "I just don't believe you". .

Sadly, Jimmy Bryant died in January 1996, but Frank continues to play around the city to this day. The Just Brothers' musical legacy is relatively small in comparison to many other artists of their era. But in "Sliced tomatoes" and "Carlena" they have contributed two of the most popular and enduring dancehall classics of the modern age. And, lest we forget their 'other' material - noted soul scribe Dave Godin, no less, nominated their interpretation of "She broke his heart" as one of his favourite Deep Soul Treasures EVER! One can only surmise what the planned Just Brothers album would have sounded like. If it maintained the standard of "Tears ago" and "You've got the love to make me over", the prospect would have been truly monumental.

Masqueraders Article by J R Smith

The Masqueraders main claim to fame, to an outsider at least, would seem to be there dogged persistence. Over the 40 years they have been together enough records (about 30 singles plus 3 LP's) to please even their most hardened fan have been issued (and these are just the tracks that escaped from the tape vaults) but they only actually enjoyed national chart success on 6 occasions, the last of these being in 1980.
Although originally based in Dallas, they have over the years traveled extensively and have also recorded in cities as distant to their original home as Detroit, Memphis and Atlanta. The Masqueraders used a number of different names during their early years, even assuming the identity of hot groups for live performances up to the mid 60's (which is one reason they settled upon their own name). The talent they possess however has ensured that their distinctive sound evolved over the years, thus enabling their true ability to shine through. Most of the producers that have worked with them (Isaac Hayes included), and even some who just wished they had worked with them, have recognized their special vocal expertise.
Robert Wrightsil and Charlie Moore first formed a singing group back at TC Haskell School in Dallas, Texas in 1957. They initially called themselves the Stairs and the line-up (5 strong) actually made it into the recording studio to cut a track. This original group was together for 2 years before disintegrating as members left or went into the services. After a few short-term personnel changes, Lee Jones, Harold Thomas and eventually David Sanders were permanently added to the line-up and they began performing locally, doing well in talent contests. Before long they were also performing in small towns across Texas and their burgeoning harmony skills allowed them to sound like many top chart groups. However in 1964 they decided to stop impersonating groups such as the Drifters and took on a new identity of their own, thus the Masqueraders were born.
They went into the recording studio almost straight away to cut their first record under the new name. The single (Mans Temptation) failed to make any impact but did make enough noise to enable them to hook up with a new record label, Soultown (1965). For this company, the group were allowed to cut a couple of their own compositions ("Talk About A Woman / That's The Same Thing') and these showcased the harmonies that would later become the groups trademark. Lee Jones handled lead vocal duties on the tracks, whilst behind him the others utilised gospel and doowop vocal techniques to good effect.
Unfortunately once again the single didnt manage to make an impact (even in Dallas) however Thats The Same Thing would go on to become a top Northern Soul scene play in the UK. The group decided that a more adventurous strategy was called for. Motown was dominating the soul charts at the time (1966) and so they decided to make the trip up to Detroit to audition at the companys Hitsville studio. One-way plane tickets were purchased for each member and they headed north. Unfortunately upon arrival at Motown they found that Mickey Stevenson (the producer they had arranged to audition for) had just left the company. Instead, they auditioned for James Dean and he told them that as Motown already had the hugely successful Temptations they didn't need another five strong male group.
They were crestfallen and in somewhat of a desperate plight as they didn't have enough money to get back home. As live performance fees had sustained them back in Texas, they set off to find the only local club they had heard of, the Twenty Grand. Walking the streets trying to locate the club, they came upon a house with a microphone standing in the window. Thinking that it could well be a recording studio (after all, Hitsville itself was located in a converted house) they knocked on the door. Their decision to chance their arm was instantly rewarded, as they were allowed to sing for the guy who answered their knock. He seemed impressed with their singing but told them to call back when his boss was home, as only he could make the decision as to whether they would be signed to a contract.
Encouraged, they pressed on to the Twenty Grand Club, asked for an audition and were granted permission to get up on stage and sing. Their performance went down so well that the audience threw money up on the stage to them. Thus they had sufficient cash to fund a cheap hotel over the weekend. The following Monday they met with Lou Beatty, the owner of the small studio that they had stumbled onto. He also was impressed with what he heard and signed them to his La Beat label. By pure chance, Lou had been looking to record a harmony group and had a few suitable songs already waiting to be cut. Although the group really enjoyed the experience of cutting for La Beat (where they worked with the Brothers of Soul), unfortunately none of the singles (6 in all) released by the label were big sellers. Tracks such as How and I Got The Power would eventually become sought after sounds in the UK, but their initial lack of success led the group to once again re-assess their career. Detroit no longer seemed to be the place for them to find success; even Berry Gordy was moving his empire out of the city. So following on from discussions with old colleagues back in Dallas, they travelled down to Memphis in 1968 to call in on Chips Moman.
The decision proved to be a good one as they secured a new recording contract with Chips AGP set-up. In all 9 singles were released (on various labels) during the group's time with Chips Moman and Tommy Cogbill at American Studios. They first recorded 2 self-written songs, the frantic "I Don't Want Nobody To Lead Me On" & the deep soul styled "Let's Face Facts", which were released on the Wand label. However "This Heart Is Haunted" and "On The Other Side" (another slab of searing deep soul that was also released in the UK on the LP Bells Cellar of Soul Vol.2') were sold to another New York based outfit, Amy Records. To avoid the contractual problems that would have ensued if either of the companies had discovered that they were competing for the same group, the Amy single was released under the name Lee Jones and the Sounds of Soul.
A second Wand release followed later in the year ("Sweet Loving Woman / Do You Love Me Baby" -- 1968), but this proved to be the last release by the group on Wand. Chips Moman though was able to convince Amy records to stick with them and the next Masquerader's single escaped on that company's Bell label. By now, the group's cuts had taken on a distinctive Memphis feel and the group were really beginning to forge their own unique sound. It was their initial Bell release that secured the outfit their first real taste of commercial success, when in the summer of 1968, the timeless "I Ain't Got To Love Nobody Else" was issued. This rapidly climbed the national soul chart to make it into the Top 10, it even managed to make it up to #57 on the US pop chart (and also secured the group their first British 45 release). The record stayed on the soul charts for 3 months and the group toured extensively on the back of its success, even making it back down to Texas to perform.
Their next release, "I'm Just An Average Guy" (issued on the AGP label itself but still via Bell) repeated the hit formula; it entered the national chart in January 69 and peaked at a position in the Top 30. Once again this track also escaped in the UK, being included on the 'Bell's Cellar of Soul ' Vol.3' album. Unfortunately even though 4 further singles followed, none of these made the charts and the group's profile was no longer ascendant. Around 1969, they met up with Sam Hutchins and he got on so well with them that he would sometimes be utilised as an alternate lead vocalist (in place of Lee Jones).
By 1971, they were back in Dallas and had started their own label, Stairway. They recorded and released "Let Me Show The World I Love You" but, without proper distribution, this single and 2 follow-ups sank without trace. In 1973 they returned to Memphis and with Sam now in place of Lee, signed with and recorded for Willie Mitchell's Hi label. Unfortunately this decision wasn't the right one, as Hi and Willie Mitchell were fully focused on riding the crest of Al Green's international pop and soul chart success at that time. Even though their first release for the label, the self-written 'Let The Love Bells Ring', was a really classy outing (and almost identical to the commercially successful tracks emanating at that time from Royal Studios) it failed to return them to the soul charts. A second stylish outing followed in March 74 but the group could see that Hi were concentrating their efforts elsewhere and so were tempted away to join Isaac Hayes Hot Buttered Soul (HBS) label. With Lee having returned to replace Charlie Moore, their first outing for HBS (the single 'Baby Its You') put them straight back on the soul charts in late 1975. The good times really returned in 1976 though as, with 'Baby Its You' only just dropping off the chart, '(Call Me) The Travelling Man' (the follow-up single) surged past it on its climb into the Top 40.
To capitalise on their signing, an album (the group's first) had been released simultaneously with their first single by HBS. 'Everybody Wanna Live On' contained 8 tracks, 7 of which were penned by the Raders themselves. Although both of the cuts lifted from the album to become hit singles were the type of ballad the group were known for, other tracks included on the LP (the title track + 'Listen' & 'Sweet Sweetning') were more reminiscent of the uptempo sounds coming out of Philadelphia at that time. The album, boosted by the popularity of the singles, also went on to sell well and rose in the national chart to reach #57. When the success of their singles and the album resulted in the group undertaking some live shows in Philadelphia, Kenny Gamble (one of the masterminds behind the Philly International label) was so impressed with the group's performances that he invited them to record for him. This prospect excited the group but Isaac Hayes was having none of it and warned Kenny off. Two further cuts were lifted off the album ('Your Sweet Love Is A Blessing / Please Don't Try') in May 76 to form another single release, but this time the 45 failed to dent the charts. They were soon back in Isaac's Memphis studio though and a second album hit the shops early in 1977, 'Love Anonymous'. Unfortunately by this time, Isaac and his label were sliding into bankruptcy. Little effort was put behind promoting the album and no singles were lifted from it, so when HBS actually went under, the group had been off the charts for some time. The group however continued to perform and record (backing up Ollie Nightingale on one of his releases in 78) but they remained without a recording contract until 1980, when Bang Records in Atlanta signed them up. Bang put out a further LP and 2 singles on the group and the first of these ('Desire') spent almost 3 months on the charts in spring 1980.
This was however to be the group's last chart entry but they remained together and still performed constantly. A couple of limited edition releases on TNT escaped in the early 90's however the members took up other jobs and performing became a part time pastime for them. Lee Jones, Sam Hutchins and David Sanders moved back to live in Dallas whereas Robert Wrightsil and Harold Thomas remained in Memphis. David Sanders though travels up to Memphis when the group have a gig and today you can still catch the trio performing in the city on a regular basis.
So whether your craving is for uptempo Detroit dancers, deep emotion dripping vocal epics, Memphis movers or 70's styled soul of the highest order, the Masqueraders can supply your needs. The path that has eventually led them to Prestatyn has been a long one, but I'm sure the 40 years it has taken the group to arrive will prove to have been well worth the wait

Soul Up North Oct 2006 Review

SOUL UP NORTH OCT 2006 REVIEW
As usual the 'fans fanzine' is packed with record reviews, interviews, events stuff, CD release's and a whole host of every thing else to do with soul. The October 2006 issue features as usual on the opening pages 'Good Tunes Great Grooves' from Dave Halsall with the likes of The Gems on Riverside, Carol Jones on Mutt which is one I've picked up myself recently, The Four Tees on Vee-Jay amongst others as always alittle background on each disc and values.
You've got part 2 of the Jimmy Raye interview with a great pic of him accepting the Key to the city of Niagra from Mayor O'Laughlin. Howard give us some vinyl hot of the presses with the latest offerings from grapevine and Timmion.
One article that did stand out for me was the A-Z of soul from Steve Copeman giving us a B for this issue with lables like Bright Star, Baby luv, Blue Rock, one of my fav labels Big Top! don't you just think the white demos are gorgeous? Bullet and Big Smokey, each record gets a review with scans. I've picked out Othello Robertson as an example and its one that I've been playing too, but unfortunately not on the baby luv label.
Baby Luv - Othello Robertson - So in luv
As soon as the stylus hit's the wax and the music hits you in the sensory sections - you knowthis is THE BUSINESS. The backing track has everything for today's discerning (60's rare soul dancer or listener).you'll have to buy the mag to see the rest 😛
Our own toodarnsoulful (Liam Quinn) from these pages presents us with a in-depth interview with Larry (mo) Jackson, one question that was put forward to him with a little snippet of the answer was. what was it like as an up and coming group living in America and trying to break into musical stardom, at a time of civil rights movements ect. "Like Charles Dickens would say - Its was the best of times, it was the worst of times".
Shane Cox gives us his wonderful Chicago Soul, properly my favourite city for producing soul music..shock horror above Detroit I hear you muttering! With reviews of Chuck Bernard on New Breed and Johnny Moore on Bright Star, also as an added extra you've got a Chicago special from Shane that features the excellent Syl Johnson who was over earlier in the year performing live at Lowton I think? with complete discography and background on his efforts of giving us many a good record if you aint got one in your collection you cant go wrong with 'I've got to get over'.
More record reviews for the funk crowd, Mark Hansons reviews, early soul & R&B from Craig Butler and of course Ted & Linda's excellent R 'n' B scene, with the likes of The Demons, Connie Questell and Luther Thomas (always wondered how long that would take to get the attention it deserves from the r&b crowd)
Chalkys La-beat CD review is a great read and can be found in the articles section of this very site, Sean O'Connor's Modern happenings in the north west, and news and grooves from the modern side with Mark Randle
More Interviews with Pat Powdrill, spanning three pages, with background info, and complete solo discography, the latest CD's from Kent, Ace, Soul brother and grapevine get a quick once over from Howard, and finally Mike Finbrow give's the deep collectors some soulful words and reviews to get their teeth stuck into.
All in all a mighty fine read, go and grab your self a copy.later my fellow soul fans, need a beer after writing that lot!
If you want to contact howard to get a copy.

Soul Source - Up and at em

Had to happen didn't it ?
After posting last week an "almost sorted" post...
no prizes for guessing that something had to happen, this time it was the main hard disk on server it went down at a bad time, causing all sorts of grief and hassle.

And so a week later; after doing again a lot of what did week before am back here again tempting fate by posting "sorted" style posts.
News is finally at a place where can say have got over the hassle and site and server is back on the road and 99% solid.

site:
the hassle has meant that everything has had a sort out and so far seems to be running smooth and solid
due to this has been a fair bit of news
most can be found in the site section of forum
but have done a quick summary below

forums:
intro section now more prominent
if having problems with any part of site please check site section

mods:
changes on the mods team
farewell to Mandy and Dan who have both stood down due to real world kicking in
four new mods be shouted up tonight
still hunting high and low for another freebasing one

members:
approx 6000+ members since 2003
have just had a series of clear outs and kept only accounts that have logged in since Jan 01st 2006
so now current members - 2400+ "active" members
while 6000+ may be more impressive to some, using a "active" only should be better for members/site

all new members now get pm'd a welcome and are asked to post a intro
still get people trying to use joke accounts for posting, sorry but those days are gone

terms of use/action by site
what the site is run on, all agree to follow them
vast vast majority do respect them, site hasn't time running around after people who don't
normally action goes like this
warnings, suspension, closure
no wish to do such, so ask all to follow them
can be found at foot of every page

backroom
see the site q and a bit if wanna know about what some ****s think is some sort of big "secret"
"wise up" is a term that springs to mind

photos:
members photo albums are now all back up less 3 recent onesthat were lost during hassle

flyers:
flyer gallery - sorted and uptodate
note all flyers posted before june 2006 have been moved to past flyers
as there were some that wasn't sure if were still valid/uptodate
from now once any flyer is over 3 months old it will be moved
and so will need reposting
that way while a bit of a pain for early ones, it should ensure that all flyers are more valid and so flyer gallery more worthwhile

sounds:
up and at them
the built in forum player will be replaced shortly by a pop up player,
this is so that can navigate away from the article and the counter will also reflect a true count
still work in progress more improvements to follow shortly

news/articles
still trying to find best solution for the 1000s of articles on site
changes here in the very near future

banners
do get many requests for banners for charity events
due to this a better policy for such charity events will be annouced shortly

that's all for now, hopefully the last two/three weeks will now just fade away and I can get to the travel agents...

Soul Source - Trouble At The Disco

Well have to say the last couple of weeks concerning soul source have been a bit eventfull.
Thought that push out a few words so if have been wondering just why the sites has been up and down or where the sounds have gone then at least if do happen to stumble on these words will hopefully have a better idea.

First though, just like to pass on thanks to all those who posted both on site and by email/pm/face thoughts concerning my post regarding standing down a week or so ago.

Did make me look at my decision again, and while events afterwards has meant that my plan to step back fell apart from day one, the comments did bring the postive things about site to front.

Of course after, having a good think, some reflection and a bit of decision making, the site itself did its usual thing...
... when ever feel an urge to post an onwards and upwards sort of post sure the site takes it as a challenge to throw something at me and mess things up
It cetainly did it this time, an attack by hackers on server, led to a few days of background work, after the usual chase around was thinking have solved closed and cleaned up things and can get on with things.
Of course once thought this and began to get back to the usual stuff, noticed another hack which was done in such a way, that the only thing to do was completely reload everything and start again.

Cut it short, this then ended up taking more than a week to do, and while not out of the woods completely, the worse bits are sorted and hopefully come monday be ready for the next thing.

Of course these going ons punched a big hole in my "step back" plans.
But on the postive side, rebuild etc should have benefits all round on site both up front and in the background. And as now back in postion where can move on with plans made, then things are now back on track

As said thanks to all who passed on views, words, suggestions etc and many thanks to all the mods who to be honest if it wasnt for them the site would be no where near what it is today

best foot and all that

Steam September Allnighter CANCELLED

After talking to Johnny Beggs my co-promoter at Steam we have decided to cancel Septembers Allnighter, we moved our orginal date to avoid a clash, when we moved it to the 16th we took a chance not knowing if Leicester Allnighter was going ahead or not. Now that Stu has confirmed, John and I both feel that it would be unfair for us to clash with Leicester as Stu has worked very hard to establish his night and discussed dates with us as far back as last year.

We would like to apologise to Stu and his team and wish them all the best for the 16th and John and I will look forward to seeing some of you down in Leicester as this event deserves all our support.

Thanks

Wigan Casino May 1980 Review

Here is a very old review of Wigan Casino I did. We'd stopped going in 1978, and having heard one of Sam's spot's at Bedford, I decided to venture north once more recording the visit in Blackbeat. Usual health warning - please remember I was very young when I wrote this, but I wonder how many cover up's can be uncovered from this article.
From Blackbeat Issue 4
Wigan Casino May 1980 Review

My first visit to Wigan for over a year (it costs over 25 on the train for us). Firstly we sussed MP Cyril Smith on the train scoffing sandwiches (is this the Liberals solution to the problem of the EEC food mountains I ask?). By the time we reached Warrington I realized that things ain't what they used to be. In the old days we would have seen about 50 folk board the train complete with baggie trousers, bags covered in patches etc. Today however the soulies wear conventional clothes, just the same as you would see anywhere in the south. This was to be borne out by the fact that in the Casino itself there were only about three people in baggies. Most were wearing jeans, some straight, some zoots.
The next surprise was to be getting in. In the old days it was tightly packed pushing for about an hour and murder. The Casino still opens at 12.30, and there are still two doors open. However the attendance has dropped somewhat and that makes the getting in very easy it took me about five minutes.
They say things don't change and the Casino's atmosphere certainly doesn't. Of course Russ Winstanley was the first spinner. Russ seemed to be playing several pop cover versions of Motown numbers. Worse though was an instrumental of "Sweet talking guy". Unfortunately he played a couple of sounds that resembled Helen Shapiro. I thought we had got over all of that.
One of the most popular stompers for Russ was The Seeds "Pushing too hard" released in this country on Vocallion; it is a rock collectors classic and as such not fit for Wigan. With the upsurge in popularity for 70's dancers, Russ had to play some as well. Included in his spot were The O'Jays "I love music", Isaac Hayes "Disco Connection" and 21st Creation's "Tailgate" a sound I remember Colin Curtis playing back in 1977. "Disco Connection" is a monster at the Casino now. Also big for him were Barnaby Bye, and Johnny Williams "You're something kind of mellow", a Levine sound of a couple of years ago.
At 2.15 Richard Searling took over and the music changed to rare soul. Kick off sound was Frankie Karl and the Chevrons, a very popular record from the 60's, followed by the Delgado(?) cover up, and the now immortal Eddie Holman "Where I'm not wanted". We swung into the 80's with the very popular Skip Mahoney "Janice" and then back into the 70's with what surely is the best sound on the scene at the moment James Mack and The Chicago Gangsters "You're love pushed me over the top" cover up. That really packed the floor as did the Brainstormers c/u. After Al Johnson & The Hit Men's "Just ask me" came Oscar Perry and the very funky Lee More and the Resourceful Ones "You're love keeps me dancing. It was then back to the 60's for more covered sounds, (and non covered sounds) Frank Wilson, Bobby Kennedy, the Nomads incredible "Something's bad" and a great midtempo sound called "Dancing a hole in the world" by the suspect sounding Tony Hestor and the Detroit Delights Orchestra. The spot also included Vicky Baines "Country girl" which has been massive for two years now and the Joe Matthews c/u "I don't like to lose" rumoured to be the Orchid's on Kool Kat. Before retiring to the record bar I heard the other version of "Love slipped through my fingers" which gives Sam Williams a run for it's money. "He's so fine" the Judy Street cover up I didn't like.
Pat Brady was on next playing a mix of 60s and 70s sounds. Included in which were Eddie Jacobs Exchange "Can't seem to get you out of my mind" covered up as Ronnie McNeir, and the same as the 4 Tops, but judging by the ZTSC number it wasn't released until the 70s. The Frank Dell Band cover up, and the Volcanoes "Showstopper cover up; both went down well as did the slowest record of the night the Lou Brown c/u.
At about 4.45 Gary Rushbrooke took over playing The Sweet, which he insists on still calling "Chester Pipkin", Frankie Karl & The Chevrons again, The Salvadors pacey "Come on and love me" cover up and the very popular Velvet Hammer's "Happy" (not a cover up). From the 70's we had James Mack and the CG's again, and Wil Collins and Willpower from 1976 (again not a cover up).
I could not help noticing though how empty the place looked after about 4.00 with Mr M's open and the sleepers asleep parts of the hall were near on deserted with the dancefloor having fewer than 35 people on it at times a very saddening sight as one who can remember the Casino when it used to be packed. Anyway after a while Sam appears on the stage with his box (just about the only thing he has not got covered up), but then goes away again without having done a DJ spot.
Brian Rea then took over with some oldies. Popular were the real James (Jimmy) Mack and "My world is on fire" (which originally came out of a soul pack would you believe!), Billy Arnell, The Appollas "Mr Creator" and of course Billy Prophet. Old father Evison finished off "Burning spear" still proving popular along with the Fife Piper.
The Record bar, a shadow of it's former self, was quite bustling which surprised me. On sale were three E J Chandler's for a fiver each and three copies of Eddie Jacobs Exchange, as well as George Kirby for 5.
Having been round to a friend's that afternoon I heard how some guy had found a UK Hickory demo of "Queen of fools" at a record fair that morning. Well sure enough the same guy was at Wigan that night with the record on sale guess who he sold it too? Yes Keith Minshull for a tidy sum (for a sum reputed to be around 50).
All in all an enjoyable night to be had at the Casino still. The numbers are down on what they used to be, though one guy told me that they were up on what they had been (which makes we wonder the place must have been really empty).
There are spaces on the dancefloor where there never used to be and at times there are mighty big spaces too. With the exception of about five pop records from the oldies jocks and a few from Russ, I am glad to say that the musical content was 100% soul, being split about 65% from the 60s and 35% from the 70s / 80's. The most popular dancefloor packers seemed on the whole to be the newer sounds from the 70's.
The only thing that spoilt my enjoyment was the sadness reflected at how the place had lost so many regulars. Ironic really isn't it, the place is now more soulful than it's ever been, and the sounds played have never been better (nearly all soul), that the attendance is also at it's lowest ever.

Milestone Soul Albums

A Q&A SESSION WITH KENI STEVENS Written by Dalli Samrai
For all those 80’s soul connoisseurs out there only a handful of British soul artists that stood out, in comparison to their US counterparts. Keni Stevens is one of those British soul artists who could have succeeded where other UK soul artists failed, as his unique voice and production could compete with some of Americans finest at the time. However Keni Stevens came and went without getting the full recognition he deserved even with top UK Soul DJ’s like Robbie Vincent, Andy Peebles and Jeff Young backing him.
There was no mistaking the honey-toned voice at the other end of the phone. The same voice that has enraptured UK Soul fans in the classic soul decade that was the 1980’s. Keni Stevens is one of a kind, an artist who has stood the test of time, who has established a unique place in the pantheon of 80’s soul music.
History
British born singer Keni Stevens is the son of a U.S. serviceman and began his career working in a record shop selling deleted catalogues of classic soul and lovers rock/reggae. Keni first move into music came in the mid 70’s when he joined as lead singer for the group “Raw Energy”. “Raw Energy” members included Alan Cooke (now a British actor starring in “London Bridge”) and Peter Hinds (who went on to play keyboards for 80’s Brit funk band ‘Light of the World’) on keyboards. “Raw Energy” were signed to Conflict Records but disbanded after 18 months of playing gigs up and down the country.
Keni was taken on as A&R man for Conflict Records and being responsible for releasing lovers rock/ rock steady/ reggae classics by artists such as Gregory Isaacs in the UK. Keni also worked as a session singer with artists including Eddy Grant before signing to the Elite label as a solo artist in 1985.
“Blue Moods” period
Keni released initially two singles on Elite Records “Night Moves” and “All Day All Night” in 1985 which were well received by the soul crowd and getting picked up by specialist UK radio. This led to much interest in Keni Stevens, who was initially mistaken for being a new US artist. A few majors showed interest at the time, and Polygram Records offered Keni a 2.5 million pound record deal. Keni tells that he declined the offer as he felt he would be restricted by the major and would have to compromise his sound and style to fit the record label, as well as losing his self production.
Keni sticking with Elite started recording his debut album “Blue Moods”. Keni described the sessions as being long stretches in the studio and even doing a full 30 hour recording sessions some days. The initial thoughts of the record label were that the album sounded to mellow for the UK market as at the time UK soul was a more upbeat affair with acts like Loose Ends and Junior breaking the UK charts. Keni states at the time he was determined to release the album with or without the label’s backing. To test the water “Too much too Soon” and “Cannot Live Without Your Love” were released as 12inch singles (Too much too soon” on white label and “Cannot Live Without Your Love” on the Jam Today label). To the label’s surprise Keni was proven right, and so paved the way for the release of the classic “Blue Moods” album on the Jam Today label in 1987.
The songs on the “Blue Moods” album were a very passionate affair and soon found its way on top of most DJ playlists. “Cannot live without your love” was featured on many top soul compilations at the time i.e. “Upfront 6” (out on Serious Records), and “Spend the Night” on “Slow Jams 3” (out on Street Sounds).
The “Blue Moods” albums sold over 150,000 copies in the UK alone and over a million worldwide. Which was not bad start for a UK Indie Soul album at the time. The album established Keni Stevens on the soul scene in the UK and the loyal European soul market. Keni also appeared on a few television shows to promote the album such as the now infamous UK 80’s show “Solid Soul”.
Keni Stevens did go on to release two other albums “You” and “Living on the Edge” on the Debut Records label before disappearing in soul history.
"I am often asked if I write songs for anyone in particular. The reaction to my answer tells me whether or not the questioner understands my work. The answer is no. My songs are about adult relationships and situations.
I don't expect you to change anything in your life or relationship because of these songs, I can only hope they might shed some light on some of the things that often go unsaid in relationships. Therefore enjoy the songs and take from them anything you might find applicable to your own situation.
That's what this recording is about and after all, if you've reading this you've probably paid for it!!!"
Taken from Keni Stevens 'You' album sleeve.
Keni seems to be positive and in good spirits about the current revival of quality soul music from the neo-soul from the US to the new breed of UK soul talent.  Keni like other musicians has found that new ways of working and promoting his work via the Internet and the Myspace revolution.
Keni has also just recently setup his own label and recording studio “Jam Today”, the original name for the studio/label he recorded his debut “Blue Moods” album. Keni states he and Andy (original Jam Today Studio/Label owner) were good friends, until his untimely death in 2000. Keni is also keen carry on Jam Today’s history and to work and collaborate and develop new artists, and share his knowledge of the music business.  Keni is currently working on new tracks which may develop into an album in the future.  He is also working with new UK talent Teish O' Day, Chanel Zane Fusco, Suza, 2Planets and Dragon Fly which Keni is very enthusiastic about working with.

6Ts / Valatone 100 Club Extravaganza! Saturday 12th Aug

Stop Press News

6Ts / Valatone 100 Club Extravaganza

Due to an unexpected cancellation of the live jazz act for the early evening session at the 100 Club, the 6TS Rhythm 'n' Soul Society has negotiated with the Valatone org. to produce a whomper, stomper, bomper, xhomper soul session from 10pm to 8 am at the legendary Oxford Street club.

The massed ranks of Valatone DJs and show-girls will run their night at the 100 Club from 10pm-1.30am when the 6TS jocks will seamlessly take over and continue the night right through to 8am. So there won't be any queueing, or kicking out of jazzers or getting rickshaws from Euston up West. Jon Buck will be hosting his own little 50th party down there too and anyone with his tickets will be sorted amicably.

It will be £12 to get in before 1.30 and the usual tenner after 1.30. If anyone was just coming for the early session, we'll sort them accordingly. So if you were going to both, you save money, or if you were just doing the 100 Club it's the same; unless you splash out £2 and get in up to 3 ½ hours earlier.

So from 10pm-1.30 am it will be Johnny Timlin, Andy BB, Gareth Donovan and Adam Torel, then from 1.30 Mick Smith, Ginger, Ady Croasdell and Jumping Joan. Jon Buck will be cropping up all over the place throughout the night.

It's going to be one hell of a night, See you there!

Hitsville USA Will Debut in Detroit in 2007 - Musical Play

Press release about a forthcoming "musical play" planned to open in 2007 called Hitsville USA with plans to show eventually in uk

Seems there is also another musical play in the pipeline for 2007 as well, written by Berry Gordy

Authentic "Jersey Boy" Names Al Abrams, Motown Records Founding Publicist, to Create Original Motown Musical Play

Hitsville USA Will Debut in Detroit in 2007 Prior to Broadway, London Openings
t

Detroit, MI (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) July 27, 2006 -- The compelling untold true story of the early days of Motown Records as seen through the eyes of Al Abrams, the founding publicist of Motown and the first employee of Berry Gordy's Tamla-Motown music empire, is poised to become the basis of a theatrical musical.
Abrams, author of 11 published books and a journalist and publicist, has been named to write the book for the play, titled Hitsville USA.

Abrams was hired by Gordy on Memorial Day 1959 before there was even a Motown label. Although he had absolutely no experience, it was Abrams' job to get the fledgling company's records played on the air by disk jockeys, and especially white disk jockeys on Top 40 radio stations. And he succeeded, often using unorthodox but now legendary methods.

Abrams also became the company's first publicist, serving in that role through 1966, arguably the label's most productive years before Motown abandoned its Detroit roots for Los Angeles.

The legendary Hitsville USA studio at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit is where such Motown musical icons as Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Four Tops, the Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas and Stevie Wonder recorded their breakthrough hit records. Many of their songs are today anthems of pop culture. Now the site of the Motown Museum, the Hitsville USA address is known worldwide as a must-see destination for fans that make their musical pilgrimage to the building where Abrams once occupied the attic as his office.

The show's primary angel and organizer of the investor group is successful New Jersey businessman and musician Michael C. Haber. He says the musical will debut in Detroit. Among the potential venues are the Fox Theatre, which hosted the legendary Motortown Revues, and the Fisher Theatre in the landmark Fisher Building on West Grand Boulevard.

Haber, the son of Janet and Lenny Haber, is a musical prodigy who began playing the drums at the age of eight and began his professional musical career at 15. The Newark-born Haber performed with many contemporaries of the Jersey Boys' including the Belmonts and the Angels of My Boyfriend's Back fame. "I've been on stage 10,000 times," says Haber. Jersey Boys is the Tony Award winning musical on Broadway chronicling the career of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

Berry Gordy announced his own plans for a Motown musical in 2003 and is scheduled to open his production in 2007 as well. "But the similarities end there," says Abrams. "I will be telling the Motown story through the eyes of an 18-year-old white Jewish boy in an all black environment, where I was surrounded by musical genius on a daily basis. My experiences at Motown were a microcosm of the then-contemporary rise of the civil rights movement in the United States. I am sure Berry will bring his unique perspective to his story."

Abrams is the featured essayist on Universal's Hip-O Select 166-song The Complete Motown Singles Volume Five - 1965 CD compilation, to be released August 4. He is currently completing Hype! a book on how he sold the Motown Sound to the media and the masses.

So how did the Jersey/Philly sound of Haber and the Motown Sound of Abrams get on the same play list? Haber explains, "I had the good fortune to meet Al Abrams through a mutual friend of a friend. There is no doubt that God has brought us together so amongst other things Al Abrams can receive the long awaited recognition and respect he undeniably deserves.

"This project stirs a passion in me to bring not only the wonderful songs that the great Berry Gordy has produced and delivered to us (thank you Mr. Gordy), but also the wonderful stories of the backgrounds and lives of the Motown artists. Most of all, it will introduce to the public the Al Abrams Motown story that has been overlooked by such productions as the Motown 40 television show. Motown and Gordy have left Abrams standing in the shadows long enough. Like the Funk Brothers before him, it is time for him to step into the spotlight."

Haber says he expects Hitsville USA to reach Broadway as well as London where many Motown/Northern Soul aficionados can have an opportunity to see the show.

You can reach Abrams through alanabrams@aol.com and Haber at blktiafair@aol.com

Rhyl Town Hall Tonight Cancelled

North Wales Soul Clan's Northern soul night @ Rhyl Townhall has had to be cancled due to the local council pulling the plug,

because it did not want to be open after 12
and so yet again another good venue gets lost to us, because our elected local councils dont want to support our efforts to keep soul alive in north Wales, but we will "keep the faith" and keep looking for another venue.

Kenny Thomas - Crazy World - Album Released July 2006

KENNY THOMAS
CRAZY WORLD
Release Date: 17th July

In response to demand created by his fans rather than some marketing departments sleight of hand, Kenny Thomas is set to release his new album 'Crazy World' in July. Kenny's new album was seized upon by soul cognoscenti in the media and spread like a bush fire through England's ever-vibrant northern soul club scene.

Soul music inspires more snobbery than almost any other genre, but Crazy World strikes one for homegrown British talent, with a soulful sway to rival Alexander O'Neil at his best. Hot on the heels of the single, Thomas will issue Crazy World, the long-awaited album that will confirm his credentials with longtime supporters and new appreciators beyond any argument.

Crazy World features mainly co-writes by Kenny, who's collaborated with such acclaimed talents as prolific hit maker Eliot Kenedy, South African-born writer-artist Jonathan Butler and producer Simon Law, whose credits include Soul II Soul and ChantÃÆ’© Moore. Among them is the much talked-about Let It Rain and the in-demand Him, co-written by Thomas and Butler and effusively embraced among the online community of Britsoul devotees as possibly one of the best UK soul tracks ever made.

The collection proudly wears Thomas' love of the very best classic American soul, funk and fusion on its sleeve, but never as mere imitation and always with his own character as a writer and vocalist to the fore. This album is old and new, he says, and there's always a risk when you're either trying to please someone else or be self-indulgent, because both can miss the mark.

Also on the album are two imaginative covers to remind us that Kenny was always an outstanding interpreter too, all the way back to signature hits such as Outstanding and Tender Love. Opening the set is I Will, an ingenious reshaping of Icelandic jazz-funk outfit Mezzofortes top 20 pop crossover instrumental of 1983, Garden Party. Then there's a great reading of Don't Know Why, well known as a Norah Jones hit but now made entirely his own by Thomas, who takes possession of the Jesse Harris composition with a sophisticated update.

Kenny Thomas will be available for interview for further information please call Louise Molloy-Harris at Quite Great Publicity on 01223 410000 or email louise@quitegreat.co.uk

Alfreton Northern Soul Reunion

Any one that went to this great Northern Soul Reunion would know that the night down well with over 400 soulies. The sounds coming from the decks was totally out of the past with Dj's (Melton Mafia) Steve Tuck&Oggie taking the first spot to warm us up, then Graham Weaver from The Fez filled the floor with none stop 100% Northern Soul Oldies sounds. At 10 the organizer Ian Marriott with his good friend Glyn Williams took the dancing level to what it was like in the good old days at Alfreton. Terry Davies kept it rolling finishing the night with Rob Smith he also kept the floor going till the lights came on at 1.00 with the atmosphere that you could cut sweat that pored and the booze that flows this night is one night to be remembered
Thanks to Ian&Pat Marriott and all those that participated

Solomon Burke appearing in Cambridge This Friday 21st July

From the Cambridge Evening News
see end for link to full article

A TRUE music legend comes to Cambridge tomorrow (Friday, 21 July) when soul veteran Solomon Burke stops off as part of his latest UK tour.

The voice behind hits like Everybody Needs Somebody to Loveand Cry to Mewill perform as part of the Cambridge Fringe Festival at the Fringe Festival Gardens, near Great Abington.

He started down the musical path when he was a preacher in a gospel church in Philadelphia before going on to present a gospel radio show. In the sixties he started recording soul music but he never turned his back on his gospel roots, and remains deeply religious to this day.

He was snapped up by Atlantic and became known in the UK on the back of the Northern Soul boom of the seventies. He returned to prominence with the release of the aptly titled Don't Give Up on Mein 2002, featuring songs written for him by the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Van Morrison.

In the UK his career was also given a lease of life when he struck up a friendship with Jools Holland and went out on tour with him.

"I'm back in the saddle again and it feels wonderful," he tells scene. "I'm very blessed to be able to be performing with so many great artists....

Rhythm and Soul Set Reunion Saturday 22nd July

THE RHYTHM&SOUL SET REUNION
Saturday 22nd July 2006......8.00 p.m. - 3.00 a.m.

SUBLOUNGE, Barwick Street, Birmingham, B3 2NT
£6 admission
FREE 33 track CD

The Rhythm&Soul Set reunion occurs this Saturday, those who regonise the name will know what to expect, those who may be scratching their head saying "mmm.. sounds sort of familar whats it about" may be expecting me to quickly throw in a glowing and interesting paragraph on how its a reunion (not a revival) of a series of events held in the early 90s by Mace and Rob Messer...

However if you were expecting that you're out of luck as was scratching me head myself!
Best bet is to steer you to a link to the uppers website where Richard KarstrÃÆ’¶m it says a few more words on the event
http://www.uppers.org/showArticle.asp?article=767
and also a lookback at style and origins of the RSS set in the early 90s by Jamie Rave
http://www.uppers.org/showArticle.asp?article=218

looks and sounds like a great cd has been put together for this event and while plans were to put up clips, as the music often tells the story better, they will now follow in just a bit

for now here's the cd track listing , more to follow and the flyer below
