I've been out of the scene for about 3 years now, dj'd and organised a Northern night since '96....disillusioned with the backstabbing, the greed and of course, 'the politics'. I've been running a Motown 'handbag' night since and haven't had to put up with any of that. Only trouble is, I'm still missing the pull of the Northern Scene, the nostalgia and the wonderful sounds of my youth! Having spoken to a few people still on the scene, have found that a lot of the 'greedy' people have seen thier numbers of sheep-like followers dwindling. which of course is good. I've since been told that it's the 'weekender' that's the new 'crowd puller' .......but the shepherds are still the same. It pains me to say that I couldn't stand the large clubs that had the same old doormen, same old dj's, but all trying to impress playing music most of us had never heard. Is it not a fact that because most people hadn't heard it, was mainly because it was a crap record? I am in the process of fumbling my way back into trying to find a venue where ALL of the music is really good. Sorry, that will never happen.....possibly 75%. I went to a Northern night a few weeks ago and some parts were okay, but 'across the board' really doesn't cut it really, do you not think.....it's a kop out yeah? I went to another last Saturday. I heard a few rareish 'wigan' sounds and the smile stayed on my face, only for it to fade and then change into a headshake and then finally 'a goodbye' when I had to endure 2 whole, long and tedious hours of R n B! You should have gone to 'The Wheel' I was told. I was still at primary school when you were at 'The Wheel' I retorted !!! The problem is....just because I wasn't around when the Wheel was in full swing means that I missed out on a 'Golden Era'. Golden Era my arse! The people who are into that should stay with it and not force it onto others. The same applies to so called 'Modern' nights. Yes, some of the music is okay, but a lot is bordering on 'Disco' and recruits the sort of crowd who dance to disco too!

I want a good Wigan Casino/Torch oldies night, no huge venue, no so called 'big name dj's', no 'syndicate' doormen, no politics, and most of all NO GREED. Am I being too naive? Does anything like this exist in the Bolton/Bury/Rochdale area? Please help, otherwise I may be lost forever!!!!!!

You can't have looked far, there's tons of these nights every weekend, you should have as much trouble avoiding them as avoiding swine flu.

I had been away for a while, growing up, studying, seeing the world. First place I tried when I came back home was Thorne, really not for me.

Tried the Three Horseshoes Soul Nite in Rotherham a month ago and loved it. Very old fashioned welcome, guys fairly new to the scene running it and music that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I had a such a great night, it will be a regualr for me.

Depends what you're into but, I just love sitting out my hates waiting to be blown away by a great tune that.................sometimes follows.

Hope you enjoy life in your bubble where nothing ever changes and you hear the same oldies over and over again

Every time you will be able to say "I remember when I heard this at ..." or "I remember doing this when this was played"

What a boring existence, stick with the handbaggers at least you will be able to impress them with your knowledge !!!!!

No, not a fact at all.

Are you therefore saying that MOST the records you now regard as quality classics, originally played as newies/unknowns at Northern Soul events from those glorious days of old, were known to you prior to been played at such NS events?

This comment never ceases to amaze me.....surely the whole scene was founded on obscure/unknown records?

laugh.gif Isn't that the whole point of this scene? I go out to hear music i've never heard and i'm disappointed if i don't hear at least one i've never heard before. You should stick to your Motown night mate at least there you won't hear anything you haven't heard before eh? thumbsup.gif

got to say the man has a few valid points if you were around the clubs in the early 80s it could be confusing and still is as jazz funk, disco, soul, etc, are the same thing ie dance music and northern soul is only what northern soul djs decide to play and we decide to dance to. in fact im confused now think ill stop here but 4x4 still does it for me ill get me coat

You should get yourself along to the Coop in Nuneaton, packed every single time, wall to wall oldies, lots of Wigan classics, run by Mark Freeman who is Wigan Casino to the bone. It's probably the best oldies soul night in the country and it's on next Saturday. I'll be there, so say hello if you come along.

If you're not prepared to travel though, there really is no hope for you.

funny really theres that much out there at the momment that people have lost the point ie just good soul music -its punters that tag records and conviently put them into genres etc!! I done the wilton last week in the duration of my 1 hour spot i was asked for "old northern soul"newies,oldies-fast ones and seventies with a bit r/b lol,and this is a upfront do that is well respected lol.

The point is that tastes do vary and the punter loves to tag, well all quilty of creating all this bollocks!!! A GOOD RECORD IS A GOOD RECORD -but the wide spectrum of individuals tastes means that someone may love say the trannels -whilst others may think its over played, its sixties, etc etc,the bollocks just intensifies.

The various dos offer the lot -pay your money and take your choice-simple as that really!!!whistling.gif

Totally agree Dave, the fact that the scene is still going now, is even more magical to me than the past. Proves the quality of the music and the tastes of the crowd. And there is enough out there for everybody's tastes now, although maybe even too many nights sometimes. Don't get the baggage carriers and their moans, give him a few private counselling sessions!

Imagine how boring life would be if the scene had just died off and remained as a distant youthful memory?

Another post this time having a dig at both Rn'B and "Modern" !!!

Don't know what you mean by modern, it means different things to different people and thus covers a wide spectrum.

Interesting to hear you comment on modern nights though, if you don't like it, why on earth would you go ?

Rn'b doesn't cut it for me, so I wouldn't go to a venue that played predominantly that, and I wouldn't moan about it on a forum. You makes your choice, simple as that..

More than a few "Northern oldies" nights in the South Yorkshire Area, KGB, City Limits, Davy's for example, (apologies to anyone I've forgotten, just stuck to Sheffield) all playing exactly what they say on the tin.

You've not even mentioned crossover.:wicked:
